I whole heartedly agree with this letter and give it my first support. We have had this discriminatory and unnecessary
restrictive attitude toward Cuba AND CUBANS. I URGE Urgent DISCUSSION Between UWI AND THE CUBAN FACULTY TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE.IT HAS GONE ON TOO LONG.

How can the BMC support Cuban doctors?The BMC is comprised of self-important, money-focused doctors whose objective in life is to always drive the latest Mercedes and to live the big life.
Their focus is on REACTIVE medicine as prescribed by the western demons – who ignore the ROOT CAUSES of sickness and disease – and focus of prescribing drugs to manage symptoms.Cuban doctors are trained as community focused professionals who are prepared to PROACTIVELY promote and support a healthy community. Their salaries are in line with other contributors to community development. They therefore see themselves as SERVANTS of the community, and are generally less inclined to take bribes from drug companies and drug reps.
Would we expect the Royal Commonwealth Society to welcome the Pinelands Creative Group to join them – just because they both claim to promote ‘community development’?
What we actually NEED is a CUBA-LIKE approach to medical care in Brassbados. NOT for the BMC to contaminate a much better product – that produces much better results WITH FAR LESS RESOURCES.

Well, I have had a soft spot for Cuba for over forty years now. I prefer their system to that of the West and would trust my life with them more so than those trained by the West for all the reasons outlined by Bush Tea.

In the winter of 202; after “the Ice Storm” while living in Toronto, I became ill with severe excruciating chest paint. I actually thought I was going to die. I won’t go into the results of my visit to the nearest walk in clinic here in Scarborough- to the extent that I decided that I wanted my death bed to be back home in Barbados- so I booked passage back to Bim. The usual Over the counter pain medication did not help, so I went to the nerest Polyclinic, but the severity of the pain drove me to the QEH.About 3.30 in the afternoon… It was a rather and pain filled afternoon, evening and night. Suffice that I eventually saw a doctor who procrrdrd with the emergency for my condiytion. Suffice that by 1.30 am. I had had two X-Rays and a CT scan, and much discussio and examinations, and by the time the sun rose, I was scheduled to visit the Thoracic Clinic the following two days after. The visit to the clinic, the thorough examination by the specialist and a biopsy of a lump that had developed in my throat , along with more pain medication, resulted in a long series of visits, battling with the pain and the anxiety of the unknown; since the biopsy specimen after preliminary microscopic analysis in the QEH lab, resulted in the biopsy having to be sent overseas for specialist Histochemistry etc. Its not necessary to go through the entire episodes, BUT the end result was the diagnosis of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The ATTENDANCE AT THE THORACIC CLINIC INTRODUCED ME TO THE CLINIC SYSTEM AT QEH, AS THE PREPARATIONS WERE SORTED OUT AND MY TREATMENT BEGAN. THE MEDICATION FOR RELIEF OF THE PAIN BEGAN…UNTIL THE TIME CAME FOR A RENEWal of one of my necessary pain Killers. There was a shortage of Gabapentin. That made me reach an important decision. As A Canadian Citizen I could choose to get complete treatment here, or go back to my home in Canada and enter the Health Care system there. I decided to go back North. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the care of the Cancer facilities at Sunnybrook hospital.They gave me back my life. The upshot was eight weeks of hospitalization, followed by 12 rounds of Chemotherapy, and almost two years of medication and after-care. I am now more than 8 years cancer free. i am convinced that I would have died if I had remained in Barbados.But I also rationalized that by going back into my healthcare system, for which i had contributed for the many years while working here, I was entitled to that care. it wouldalso relieve the medical system in Barbados from those costs.
All hearts are the same; the same with the brain and treatments fo the same illnesses. Why then is there SYSTEMATIC DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GRADUATES FROM CUBAN TAUGHT AND EXAMINED PHYSICIANS? HAVE JOINT CURRICULA AND EXAMINATIONS, SEEMS TO BE A SOLUTION, BUT THE PUNISHMENT…IT HAS TO BE A PUNISHMENT- OF THOSE WHO STUDIED in CUBA IS WRONG AND is MUDDLED THINkiNG. THE MEDICAL FRATERNITY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SOLVE THIS ‘problem”. it is simply a continuation of the western embargo of things Cuban. After 65 years isn’t it time to cease the embargo and punishment of the Cuban people? We could use those physicians, jointly.

Final thought: “WHEN DOCTORS GET CANCER WHY DO THEY NOT TAKE CHEMO* OR RADIO*??? WHAT DO THEY KNOW THAT THEY WON’T TELL US???

You have to know there a bunch of doctors from other jurisdictions in Canada who cannot get licensed without an extensive examination program.
Since you attended Sunnybrook, a teaching hospital, you must have come across the plethora of trainees, seemingly largely from McGill’s medical faculty and mostly foreign.
What may not be that obvious, is the numerous Canadians who, unable to gain entry to Cdn medical schools, go elsewhere. Australia, England, the multiple Caribbean schools etc. When finished, these newly minted doctors, have to jump through hoops to get a job in Canada!! Even though there is a shortage across the Nation.
While I am all for “maintaining standards”, it would seem there is something else going on here.
I know nothing about medical training, to compare that in Cuba, vs Australia, vs Canada, vs Ross Bdos vs wherever. But surely there is benefit in finding a way to move beyond the current impasse. -

Is there any evidence that this “big life” leads to any healthier, happier and longer lives?
I long to see the day when I see a 100 year old Bajan doctor in the papers smiling with the President and surrounded by family, and capable enough to makes a few jokes with everybody. Including a few jokes about the delight they take in their ahem! personal life.
I’ve heard that sometimes the media has to “censor” some of these 100 year old Bajan ladies…every one a non-doctor.
