Ralph Thorne is Barbados latest Opposition leader.

Ralph Thorne
Ralph Thorne

Barbadians are waking up to the news Ralph Thorne has crossed the floor which means he assumes the role as Opposition Leader in our parliament.

It is left to be seen in the coming weeks and months if Thorne’s decision proves to be a challenge for Mia Mottley and the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). The blogmaster will wait to hear what Thorne has to say to get a sense if this is another of those contrived positions to compare with Joseph Atherley. In any event it seems a crossing by a member of the sitting BLP member was the only way for Barbados to have an official opposition.

The surprise move will choke the informal and traditional news channels and overshadow the work Thorne’s former Democratic Labour Party has been doing to rebrand and rebuild after its decimation by the BLP in the last two general elections. What we are sure about is that with Thorne’s crossing and Neil Rowe’s legal issues the aura of invincibility by the motlleycrew is showing signs of cracks.

The other point to ponder, Thorne would not have made a move against the powerful Mia Mottley if he did not see ‘opportunity’ from his perch within the belly of the beast. It is also likely he will have a few others who may jump ship to join him on the other side. It will be those whose pension is secure or players that see themselves floating on the political fringe and willing to throw the dice at an opportunity to breath live into flagging political career.

Thorne will have a political edge in the current political environment which can be characterised as having a weak opposing voice.

Discuss for 25 marks.

I overheard a convoluted conversation with TWO DLP persons today on how they were frustrated that Ronnie told persons that he aint marching with Marcia Weekes and crowd unless they have over 1000 persons… Unbelievable…the DLP is dead and is now beyond resuscitation.

  3. It remains to be seen if the GG will swear him in and take part in a second charade.

I am unable to view those three videos from the “talking heads” as they are not available where I reside. Not sure why but this is something I noticed sometime ago for some videos.

  5. @Sargeant

They should be freely available. Are others experiencing the same issue?

  6. The reality is that although Thorne is respected in his profession, he is not a political heavy weight. Thorne’s value will be if he has earth shattering revelations to expose Mottley to the extent it deeply affects her reputation.

  7. @ David,

    no I can’t. restricted also.

  9. It could be you don’t have an instagram account. Thanks for the feedback.

  10. We’ve known George Belle as a Marxist-Leninist or a Communist, or some other derivative.

An academician who hardly published much.

    A departmental head.

And now as a loyal party man.

It’s under the first category that he seemed a better man. Everything else simply fails to measure up to his best days.

    How hast the mighty fallen?

  11. Wrong analysis.

Thorne was never particularly interested in ‘influence’.

If that were so, then Wickham would have to explain why, for two terms, Thorne never accepted or demanded any senior ministerial position.

Even as all kinds of people far less endowed were ‘called’ upon to serve.

Such thinking represents a misunderstanding of Thorne, what motivates him. This is in the same set of management problems which the political class seems unable to solve. A set of problems which prevent the DLP from using science, industrial psychology, to solve leadership issues.

That Wickham could suggest the DLP as a viable option too solidly locates his thinking within a fixed paradigm. He fails to see that the DLP is dead. He too needs this marketplace of a duopoly.

How could we break out of this duopolistic political prison when the leading thinkers are also our jailers?

That Wickham would deploy a cookie cutter mentality to fit Thorne, as if there are no personality differences, assuming that all politicians can only behave according to those ways he ordains.

A two party political system best offers recylable politicians, whose main goals are reaching pensions and precious little else. The political butterflies that are personified through party hopping, can only be at best bewildering, and predicated on selfishness, as oppose to the will of the people. These political cry babies, who when not given a ministry or left up to their own political devices, run away from “Duty, honor, country.” Ralph Thorne made the best decision for Ralph Thorne, but not for Ralph Thorne’s constituents. Roads still need to be repaired in his constituency, issues of housing and unemployment still need to be addressed. Mr. Thorne has in essence conceded that for the remaining time he has in parliament, that he would be a lame duck. The thing which summons politicians to politics, should be service, the thing which almost always betrays politicians in the end, is their lack of service and compassion for common folks. I would have admonished Ralph Thorne, with a line from that old Honeymooners television show, “old Ralphie boy.” You see in the end, vanity of vanities, all truly is vanity.

  15. His constituents and country awaits Ralph Thorne’s explanation for jumping ship. The old arguments will no doubt resurface as to whether a member of parliament should be allowed to betray the party banner he was elected under. Hopefully the wait will not be tainted by arrogance and narrow self interest.

Daily Stoic Life – Push For Deep Understanding

“From Rusticus…I learned to read carefully and not be satisfied with a rough understanding of the whole, and not to agree too quickly with those who have a lot to say about something.” ~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 1.7.3

“seek first to understand, then to be understood.”

‘You don’t know what you don’t know’

‘God gave you two ears and one mouth, use them proportionately.’

So many people think the world would be a better place if people would just listen to them. These same people are probably of a fixed mindset who let very little new information in. They are too busy justifying their belief that their thoughts have more merit than anyone else.

Seek deep understanding in all that you do. You never know where your next great idea or inspiration will come from.

  17. This is not the same Pedro Shepherd that called his political opponent tall, red and sexy talking about decorum?

  18. That the eminent Pacha would waste time responding to Petra’s simplistic analyses sadly disappoints Bushie…

    Shiite man!!
Is there no limit the depths to which we have sunk…?

    Good move by RT.
At least two years too late…

  19. We all wait to see if the GG is going to confirm her membership of the gang of 30+ and swear Ralf Thorne in as the fake leader of the opposition.

  20. The level of thinking that suggest that the role of an elected politician is to ‘get roads fixed’ and to get handouts for lazy or dispossessed constituents is THE major reason why Barbados is headed to the bottom.

Leadership is about NATIONAL INSPIRATION and standards setting.
It is about imposing justice, rightness and fairness….

It is NOT about partisan political gimmicks or even about seeking special benefits for PARTICULAR constituents /voters.

    Lotta shiite!!

There are FAR too many mendicants around, with the centuries-old, inbred mentality of ‘seeking handouts’ from massa, who then inspire politicians of the ilk who go around strong-arming business people for ‘charity contributions’ – so that they can lord it over the mendicant slave-minded voters.

How about demanding that elected politicians focus on creating a FAIR playing field?
How about a transparent Justice system?
How about some kind of ORDER in the school system, the transport system, in business etc?
    How about requiring CLEAN HANDS???

To the extent that Thorne can focus on such VALUES, – much as he did in the recent bill where the collection of parliamentary jokers voted to allow a minister to suspend the Laws Barbados – if ‘in her judgement, it is in the public interest’, …He could well be the best thing that happened to local politics since Barrow….. or perhaps not!!…

Unfortunately, slavery of the MIND is the very worse kind. And throwing pearls to swine, (or to brass bowls) has long been known to be a lost cause…

  21. @Bush Tea

Listening to the talk about people as usual are sucked into the theatre of the Thorne move while absolving themselves of what WE can do as a citizenry to hold public officials accountable.

    Oh Lord, you got this

    Send another Moses, Jah Jah

    The time will come
When Jah shall separate the sheep from the goat
    The time will come
When every vine has to find them victory, Jah Jah
    Send another Moses, Jah Jah
    Send another Moses

Don’t ask for bread (send another Moses)
Don’t ask for dreads (send another Moses)
You got to, You got to (send another Moses)
Oh oh-ho oh ho-ho (send another Moses)

    Send another Moses, oh
    Lead us your children

  23. Boss
When (not if) ‘Moses’ arrives, you will not recognize his donkey…. Not even Bob Marley did…..

God will send the final ‘Moses’ for his BB people – just as was done in Biblical tales…

NOT because they DESERVE to be saved, but because -DESPITE our brassbowlery, and despite our addiction to the demonic, selfish, greed-driven, albino-centric philosophy…

A promise was made to ancient enlightened men- who saw the light….

    Just stay tuned….

…and hope that Bushie don’t get the keys to the BU “banning button” – else your donkey buried .. LOL

  24. In the words of the Constitution

“74 (2) Whenever the Governor-General has occasion to appoint a Leader of the Opposition he shall appoint the member of the House of Assembly who, in his judgment, is best able to command the support of a majority of those members who do not support the Government, or if there is no such person, the member of that House who, in his judgment, commands the support of the largest single group of such members who are prepared to support one leader: ”

Who are the members of the House of Assembly who do not support the Government?

Ralphie can’t declare himself unilaterally as the LOO without proving himself to be LOCO?

    Ditto the GG!!

All the same Reverent Joe was supposedly sworn in by the GG as the LOO, a completely LOCO action!!

The GG was a Judge in the highest court of the land and is asked to use her judgment of who commands the support of the largest single group of members (plural) who are prepared to support one leader.

The Leader is differentiated from the members.

  26. @BU David, a spark is entirely useless in the absence of fuel and oxygen

  27. @Peter

Many thought you were imbued by a sense of optimism and enthusiasm? Instead of the prevailing cynicism and apathy that has taken root within the population?

  28. Ralph Thorne went to the President and told her that he no longer supported the Government. The President did a head count of House “members who do not support the Government”. She counted one. She then determined that he “commands the support of the largest single group of such members [one] who are prepared to support one leader”, so she appointed him Leader of the Opposition.

Ralph did NOT declare himself Leader of the Opposition, the President did.

  29. Do we live in a kakistocracy?

In a WhatsApp conversation with Ralph Thorne Wednesday last week I implored him to “talk sense to your front bench colleagues about the Cybercrime Bill, 2023.”

He replied that “They are who they are and there is nothing that I can, or wish to do about it. We live in a kakistocracy.”

I had to go and Google kakistocracy. No it isn’t derived from “kaka”, the childish slang for feces. It is defined as a “society governed by its least suitable or competent citizens”.

Do we live in a kakistocracy?

  30. @David
The reality is that although Thorne is respected in his profession, he is not a political heavy weight.
    ++++++
Interesting take of the situation, is they anyone whom you consider “a political heavyweight”? The PM has cast a long shadow over the political scene in Barbados and even within her own party replete with “senior ministers” there isn’t anyone who the public consider a natural successor or “political heavy weight”. The DLP is hamstrung because it doesn’t have any elected representatives and within the party itself the “old guard” is still sniping at its new leader.

Thorne may be better suited to the role that he will occupy as he spent the last few years ensconced in the bosom of the governing party and may be familiar with its objectives unlike his predecessor who jumped at the first opportunity after the election to assume the role of opposition leader.

  31. @Sargeant

On the Barbados political landscape we have no heavyweights in this blogmaster’s opinion.

  32. @David I understand political heavyweight to mean having the influence (whether by force of character, fear of reprisal, or appetite for reward) to command and enforce desired behaviours from other politicians.

Ms Mottley is definitely a political heavyweight according to this criteria, but I cannot think of another.

  33. @Peter

The blogmaster’s definition is how a political actor is perceived by the public e.g. Barrow, Adams and to a lesser extent Arthur and their suspected influence on national development.. Is Mottley there yet?

  34. NorthernObserver Avatar

I suspect one has to look beyond the elected, or even those who ran, to locate those with significant influence.

As an aside the new layout and font is navigable and readable. Contributions from external sources, Nation et al, no longer appear in the grey background.

  35. PLT

It was Pachamama who posited that very question, and so answered, a few years ago, right here in an article so titled.

    Kakistocracy!

Maybe RT reads the blog. Maybe he’s been well schooled otherwise.

PLT your reading about who is a heavy or not is too constrained to this moment. For we’ve had lightweights, like OSA, becoming heavies, overnight.

And this behavious is characteristic of the systems Westminster.

  36. I applaud our Supreme Leader for this brilliant move! Soon our naive commentators will have to realise that our leader is not allowing a real opposition here, but a vehicle to destroy the opposition once and for all.

Thank you, Supreme Leader, for granting us stability, order, harmony and peace.

  37. News Flash

    Double Bubble
The Leader of the Opposition gets double the salary compared to MPs.
The Head of UN gets double the salary of the Barbados PM

    1 Boring Party
Bajans talk and moan too much about Politics like oldies but will do nowt about it.

    1 Big Party
They should be more like young ‘uns who don’t waste their time and energy with the matter of political charades but will stand up and protest against issues that matter.

  38. Ralph Thorne is highly unlikely to be where Imran Khan is.

After an American coup, the rightful PM of Pakistan, his wife, many of his party officials have been with either, imprisoned, disappeared, charged, beaten, defiled, beaten and more.

But even from prison, with his party faithful running as independents, Khan’s candidates won the elections by wide margins even after all kinds of rigging and other shenanigans.

RT will never be asked by an American government to make his country a satrap for a continued war on its next door neighbor, Afghanistan.

Maybe, an election winner will emerge from the prisons of the USA next time around as well.

    Bushie’s karma?

  39. @ Pacha
It is now MUCH worse than ‘Bushie’s karma’!

The situation is best described by the messenjah himself….

  40. David Bu’MsMottley is a political heavyweight’no doubt about this in my view.no other leader not Mr Barrow, not either of the Adams nor Mr arthur had to face the amount of setbacks like covid, the hurricane, the ash falletc she had to deal with.she led the country with her colleagues through these with great success. As for Mr Thorne this will be in my opinion his swan song like it was for Reverend Atherley.Mr thorne was a dem before switching sides so it comes as no surprise to me.However although a top lawyer he is in my view a lightweight politician and clearly no match for Ms Mottley.anytime you hear persons like Mr Franklyn praising him up in my view you kno something is up.Perhaps mr franklyn will get back a senate pick.As for the march is concern it seems that the same handful of people are always in these marches, the Ms Weekes,Mr Franklyn,Ms McClean and afew others. How come the majority of bajans do not join these events?

  41. @Lorenzo

The blogmaster respects your view, we know your declared stance on these matters in this space.

Your question, a cross section of Barbadians will march behind actors they connect with who are perceived as well positioned in society, think advocacy against Cahill. It is the psychology of a Bajan.

  42. At the BLP meeting the through a little shade at Thorne, she doesn’t know why he left the party, he did not speak to anyone. Her shade was that he lost two elections as a DEM and won two as a Bee.

On the DLP side, Yearwood reached out with the olive branch and is receptive to welcoming Thorne back into the party.

The blogmaster invites you to join the discussion.
