It is unacceptable, it is wrong and it is shameful that government has announced that it is adding synthetic marijuana to the Barbados Drug Formulary to be dispensed to the poor people of Barbados.

It has been stuffed down our throats for decades that marijuana was dope, harmful and addictive. I have never heard of not even a single person dying from an over-dose of marijuana and many are still being incarcerated because of it. Government should be leading by example but instead they are not. It is the government that is now imposing addictive and harmful synthetic marijuana which is worse than the natural herb on the people of Barbados.

We are not living in the 1960’s, 1970’s or the 1980’s when drugs where dispensed and the public had no previous knowledge of their side effects. We are living in an age where information on drugs is readily available on the internet. Gone are the days when a doctor prescribed medicine, you took it unaware of the side effects, came down with another ailment, went back to the doctor to be told that it was too strong for your body or; it killed you.

Sativex, Epidiolex, Anabasum, Nabilone and Marinol are all either synthetic or synthetic mixed with cannabis drugs. They are created by scientists in labs. They are not pure or natural. One of the short term side effects of smoking synthetic marijuana is bleeding of the ears, then there is the display of an extreme version of epileptic fits. All of the five above mentioned drugs have negative effects on the brain, heart, liver and kidneys. What is the use of being cured from cancer or another ailment but be left with an expiry date on the major organs of your body?

This is an extreme version of buy now and pay later as these drugs will lead to government investing in more dialysis machines, more on treatment of cases of mental illness, increases in heart failure, liver problems and kidney failure. This is a negative investment. The better alternatives would be to grow and produce safe medicinal products locally or purchase natural drugs.

In light of the current controversy surrounding marijuana, its use for medicinal purposes and its decriminalization, it is nothing but a slap in the face for government to choose not to buy authentic products for sale in Barbados. Is the best not good enough for our people?

What makes it worse is that government intends to grow and export authentic marijuana; yet it has made the most ridiculous decision to import synthetic by-products. This defeats the purpose of growing the herb. The refusal of Government to keep its promise to hold the promised referendum on the decriminalization of marijuana adds to this dis-connect. The intent seems to be clear to prevent the poor black man from making economic gains from this herb while retaining criminalized status on the drug.

In the final analysis, Barbadians must be allowed to grow marijuana and produce on the island by-products that are natural, authentic and safe for medicinal use. Exclusion from the marijuana market is not what Barbadians voted for. All Barbadians must benefit from the production, trade and the production of products from marijuana.

The Ministry of Health must go a step further to inform us why we cannot grow marijuana and produce our own medical products since the imported version is nothing more than poison. How is this decision that placed those synthetic drugs on the formulary managing or promoting health and wellness? What is the date of the promised referendum?

  7. @ Hants, why is Barbados following the big Pharmacy model using synthetic and a combination of synthetic and Cannabis drugs. Can’t we develop a model suited to our own circumstances i.e one that is home gown and produced that is of medical cannabis byproducts, especially CBD extractions?

  8. How is synthetic marijuana different from an approved drug bought off the shelf or with a prescription?

  9. I am on medicinal CBD. It is not cheap. $152. Canadian for 40ml. The dosage is 1ml and should last for 12 hours. I take .75 of an ml. 50% thc AND 50% CBD sells for $125 Canadian. This can be used to aid sleep.
Maybe the synthetic is cheaper and why the government is going that route.

  13. Here comes one discordant note (my sole contribution to this topic)

As thousands of lives have been ruined in the war on drugs, a part of the process should be a review of the cases of those who were caught by the legal system for possession of marijuana. Some who are in prison should be freed and their criminal records records erased.

An interesting read about legalization (the unmentioned side of the discussion)
    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/25/nyregion/new-jersey-marijuana.html
“The bill would have wiped away criminal records for hundreds of thousands of people convicted of minor drug offenses and legalized recreational marijuana in a state that borders the nation’s biggest city. It would also have given many in prison a chance to be set free and ended parole for many others.

The law also aimed to diversify a booming industry that has been dominated by white entrepreneurs in Washington, D.C., and the 11 states where recreational marijuana has been decriminalized. New Jersey would have ensured that members of minority groups, as well as women, have equal access to licenses to sell or cultivate cannabis.

“We have the widest white-nonwhite gap of persons incarcerated in America and far and away the biggest contributor is low-end drug offenses,” Mr. Murphy said recently at a news conference.

Though polls showed that most New Jersey residents support legalizing marijuana, Mr. Murphy had faced an uphill struggle since he made it one of his top priorities after taking office last year.

Some African-American lawmakers, in particular, could not be persuaded to embrace legalization, believing it would bring more harm than good to their communities.”

David May 27, 2019 6:44 PM “Synthetic cannabinoids are being used across the globe, why?”

David you can Patent Synthetic Cannabinoids for Big Pharma to make Big Bucks…You Cannot Patent the Natural Products (Plants as in Cannabis that Cannabis oil is derived from) as the Genetic makeup Changes depending where it is grown, the Climate the Type of Soil all makes the Chemical Compounds change from time to time…so it’s never the same. When Pharma produce a Drug, it is always has the same Genetic makeup.

Marijuana is a natural plant that grows both in the wild and is cultivated for its medicinal properties and for recreational use. Though synthetic cannabinoids are chemical relatives to substances in marijuana, they are not actually found in plant-based marijuana. The chemical and pharmacological properties of synthetic cannabinoids are largely unknown outside of the laboratory.

A market for synthetic cannabinoids developed in the early 2000s due to the ongoing prohibition of marijuana and advances in technology that allowed for access to drug research and easier chemical production.

It is illegal to patent any natural product. The way to big profits in the medicine industry is to create an unnatural substance that never before existed in nature, then patent it, and obtain a monopoly. Hence, the molecules of pharmaceutical drugs are all strange to the human body. In all the history of humankind, such molecules were never encountered or taken into any human body. Hence, the body does not easily metabolize them. God never made our body to accept and deal with these chemicals and antibiotics. Non-toxic natural organic substances are usually easily eliminated by the body when their usefulness has run their course. Up to a point, your body can even deal with and eliminate natural toxic substances.

See the video below, which was filmed in 2006.

Dr. Robert Melamede, Professor of Biology at the University of Colorado, explains how the body’s Endo-Cannabinoid system kills cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth.

Big Pharma Is America’s New Mafia
Pharmaceutical companies have more power than ever, and the American people are paying the price—too often with our lives.

Whether or not the research space needs protecting is a matter of debate. Certainly we have so much research that it’s impossible for a working physician to get through it—some 800,000 articles are published annually. In response, the Cochrane Collaboration was formed in the 1990s to perform systematic reviews of the literature. Dr. Peter Gotzsche, the Director of the Nordic Cochrane Center in Copenhagen, has seen enough over the last two decades to sum up his findings in a book whose title says it all: Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma has Corrupted Healthcare.

“Much of what the drug industry does fulfills the criteria for organized crime in US law,” Dr. Gotzsche said in a recent interview. “And they behave in many ways like the mafia does, they corrupt everyone they can corrupt, they have bought every type of person, even including ministers of health in some countries…The drug industry buys the professors first, then chiefs of departments, then other chief physicians and so on, they don’t buy junior doctors.”

    Very thought-provoking question there.

HC, there is one important factor which is being overlooked in this whole fiasco about to be exacerbated by this silly BLP administration which is showing very early signs of disappointment and hypocrisy.

What about the foreign exchange to pay for the imported synthetic crap?

Who would be earning the foreign money to pay for this imported luxury not available to the unemployed or the very poor?

Would it be coming from the pool borrowed from the IMF while White Oak cream off their share?

Nothing but ‘Blasted lying party’ (BLP) madness, I say!

But why not show that you also possess equivalent knowledge in Biblical exegesis and expatiate by addressing the following questions:

Did your god Yahweh purposely create the Cannabis Sativa plant; and if so for what purpose?

Could you lend your “exegesic” expertise to enlighten the BU readership about the following Biblical verses?

“And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”

Also I am not sure WURU is not being harmed by her medical grade marijuana.

I’ve never taken marijuana, but once upon a time when I lived at high altitude, that is above 9000 feet I did use coca leaf tea [no not the thing from which chocolate is made, lolll!!!] but the herb from which cocaine is made, and no it did not make me high, I did not become addicted. You cannot patent a natural occurring product. For example you cannot patent Barbados Sea-Island Cotton(BSIC) or Barbados Black Belly Sheep. Both are considered to be natural products/entities attributed to an act of God. BSIC is an indeterminate plant (the bolls don’t all ripen at the same time, resulting in harvesting over a prolong period of time and increases cost of production). If the BSIC is changed by man to the determinate state ( all the bolls ripen at the same time) it can then be patented since the change is man made.

  34. ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR. BREAKS HIS SILENCE

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. breaks his silence – on the lack of rigorous vaccine safety testing and the fact that major pharmaceutical/vaccine suppliers have a history of criminal convictions and been fined for misleading regulators, selling unsafe products causing injury or death, paying out bribes etc. At the same time, vaccine sales now make up a big chunk of their profits compared to 30 or 40 years ago.

    https://youtu.be/hMH6hfwp__8

In the USA, Congress created in 1986 a special Vaccine Injury Compensation Program and in doing so also gave pharmaceutical companies blanket immunity from being sued in court in cases of vaccine caused injuries, which do happen from time to time and can even be life threatening. For example the crippling Guillain-Barre Syndrome is one recognized side effect linked in some patients to flu vaccines.

So Congress conveniently shifted the burden of compensating injured recipients of a poorly tested medication onto the US taxpayer instead of the supplier of the unsafe product.

Woman Injured by Flu Vaccine Obtains $2.49 Million Settlement from U.S. Government

In November of 2014 the Government Accounting Office (GAO) issued the first report on America’s “Vaccine Court,” known as the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP), in almost 15 years.

Congress gave the pharmaceutical companies immunity against lawsuits for injuries or deaths resulting in vaccines in 1986. Prior to this time, there were so many lawsuits pending against pharmaceutical companies for injuries and deaths due to vaccines, that the pharmaceutical industry basically blackmailed congress and told them that if they did not grant them legal immunity against the liabilities of vaccines, that they would quit making them. These vaccine products cannot survive in a free market, they are so bad.

The November 2014 GAO report criticized the government for not making the public more aware that the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program exists, and that there are funds available for vaccine injuries. Therefore, the settlements represented by vaccine injuries and deaths included in government reports probably represent a small fraction of the actual vaccine injuries and deaths occurring in America today.

    Vaccine Injuries are Seldom Reported

The U.S. government keeps a database of reports documenting vaccine injuries and deaths called The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The problem is that very few medical officials ever report vaccine injuries or deaths, either because they are not trained to recognize them, or due to pressure within their profession to not report them. To admit that vaccines do cause harm is professional suicide for most doctors and medical professionals.

    two reasons:
1 unrestricted uncontrolled silly immigration of unvaccinated invaders at the southern border—who are also bringing many other communicable diseases
2 reduction of herd immunity by many in the populace through ignorance and inco-operation in the public health
Herd immunity describes how a population is protected from a disease after vaccination by stopping the germ responsible for the infection being transmitted between people. In this way even people who cannot be vaccinated can be protected.

Dr. GP isn’t it amazing to see that ‘what goes around comes around’?

Isn’t the first reason you proffered for the measles outbreak similar to the reason why the European was able to ‘settle’ the Americas through the viral decimation of the indigenous populations?

Didn’t the ‘unwanted’ European immigrants bring with them germs of more dangerous proportions which wipe out the natives from the face of their own God-given lands?

If the Euro-Americans want to be insulated and inoculated from the immigrant-borne disease then let them return to their countries of origins and send the immigrants in those countries packing.

Didn’t the Egyptians blame your Jewish masters for the plagues which are still celebrated every year around Easter in the form of the Passover aka Pesach?

Stop blaming immigrants for the ills of ‘Society’! Without immigrants who would do the menial dirty work like cleaning, cooking, serving and ‘waiting’ in restaurants and, most importantly, caring for the native elderly while wiping their ‘twice-childish’ backsides?

And then there are those, despite all the shite some doctors talk.. for whom smoking actually works. mi want de doctors to use the synthetic marijuana on themselves and see if they can pull this one off…lol

    “95-Year-Old
Standing 4 feet, 8 inches tall, she doesn’t look like much. But at age 95, Jamaica‘s Melita Gordon can probably smoke most folks under the table. Melita Gordon is a 95-year-old-woman, and despite protestations from her family, she’s been smoking weed for 85 years of her life, from age 10 to the present day.

And she won’t stop smoking ganja until she’s dead because stopping could kill her. “When mi goes a doctor he say him ah tell mi fi to stop smoke marijuana, because if mi stop, him a go lose mi,” Gordon told Green Rush Daily.

Gordon’s lifelong habit is happily endorsed by her primary care doctor, whose view is that Gordon’s journey to 100 years might be cut short if she lays down her pipe.

Gordon, along with her doctor, speculate that her commitment to cannabis may be partly responsible for her longevity.”

Dr. Machel Emanuel speaking during the BCCI AGM Luncheon yesterday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

    high cannabis use

    Thu, 05/30/2019 – 12:01am

BARBADOS has one of the highest consumption rates per capita of cannabis in the region.

This was stated on Wednesday by Dr. Machel Emanuel of the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, who at the same time called for an integrated approach by Caribbean governments to develop a cannabis industry for medical usage.

Speaking at the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Annual General Meeting Luncheon, Dr. Emanuel said that consumption in Barbados translates to a very high value, “meaning that cannabis fetches the highest price in this country”, and higher than prices globally.
According to him, Barbados is unique because of the cross linkages that can be made between various sectors, ranging from agriculture to health, wellness tourism and pharmaceuticals.

As such, Dr. Emanuel believes that this country can get the true potential from cannabis, and must ensure that sustainability can be maximised from cannabis as a commodity.

The UWI lecturer noted that cannabis is the most traded agricultural commodity in its raw state the region.

He highlighted that several countries in the Caribbean have amended heir laws to facilitate medical cannabis. Jamaica was the first followed by Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and more recently, St. Kitts and Nevis.

He stated that there needs to be an integrated approach to developing the cannabis economy by setting the policy and legal framework by looking at the historical and cultural experiences, business and marketing, and other approaches to the issues.

He recalled that data have shown that economic growth in the Caribbean was forecast to reach 0.9 per cent in 2017, two per cent last year and it is projected to reach 2.9 per cent this year.

He added, agriculture is still one of the main contribution to GDP and that within the new Caribbean region we have strengths and weaknesses.
