Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) & Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera)

Investigate the production (oil palm) as the replacement for sugar cane production including on hilly or semi-arid lands. The infrastructure that we have in sugar plantations is the same as required for this type plantation crop and we have an oil processing plant in Barbados i.e. Roberts Manufacturing. Just a small amount of retooling is necessary. The by-products of Oil Palm production EG: palm kernel meal can be utilised and be consumed as chicken feed, cattle, sheep & goat feed, instead of the importation of feed and feed stocks. The soya bean stock that is imported now to make Oil, Margarine, etc. could be a thing of the past. Palms grow well in Barbados from coconut to ornamental palms. It is easy to include/change to Oil Palm & Date Palm if feasible and the topography and climate are conducive to these crops (Date Palm a more high valued product to be grown in the more arid parts of the island i.e. St. Lucy, St. Phillip) Another benefit to oil palm is the use of the land between and under the trees for raising cattle and Black Belly Sheep. This will also reduce the cost for weed control. There is a host of information on this type of farming on the net and can be had HERE.

Palm oil Plantation                                                     Palm oil fruit cutting

The main objection to palm oil production are environmental such as the removal of forests to plant the trees and the destruction of the habitat for the Sumatran Tiger, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Sun Bear, Pygmy Elephant, Clouded Leopard and Orangutans. None of these apply to Barbados as the land has been cleared hundreds of years ago to grow sugar cane. Utilisation of the idle land for productive and sustainable use will help to reduce the rodent and other pest populations currently in these areas. The selected oil palms bear fruit after 3 years.

Palm oil tree fruit

A similar palm tree, Bactris gasipaes, that bears fruit is Peewah or peach palm found in Trinidad. At this time of year it is sold like we sell Ackee at the side of the road and the fruit looks exactly like the fruit of the oil palm. The fruit is boiled and peeled and the flesh eaten. What left is the small coconut on the inside that you break open and eat.

2        Sugar Cane:

Government has indicated that it wants to keep the sugar cane industry for both production and aesthetic reasons with the countryside looking clean cut and manicured but a drive through the countryside you will see the amount of rab land that is idle and not the Barbados I remember. Most of the molasses used in Barbados is imported from Guyana. That is wise in that we import molasses and make rum and sell a value added product overseas as seen in Mount Gay Distilleries and to a greater extent RL Seale a contracted rum producer for the world’s best companies. Another product that we can make use of is the production of cane juice. Cane juice takes the major cost out of the production of sugar and every Bajan loves cane juice. Every tourist would want to drink cane juice, every hotel would offer cane juice. If the price was right. There are many health benefits for cane juice as the nutrients & enzymes probiotics are still present at this stage of production (Cane juice the new energy drink? Sure beats red bull) (and or create new signature drinks for bars utilising cane juice, a competition can bring out the best of our local bar-tenders talent. A rum and cane juice with a wedge of lime anyone?). At present cane juice sells for $14 for a half gallon in the supermarket. Imagine the volume that can be sold if it was wholesaled at <$5 per half gallon. The hotel industry will lap it up. If you felt that we still want to produce sugar how economical is that if you cannot produce cane juice for <$5 but want to produce sugar for $2.25 per lb. in the supermarket with all of the costs of production. Guyanese sugar sells for half of the Barbados sugar $1.10 per lb. We sell Molasses for $2 per gal at the port and cannot sell the juice for <$5? This molasses item is the cheapest item of food value in Barbados and we can import more from Guyana. Guyana does not have a tourist industry can we import frozen cane juice from Guyana if we cannot produce enough? A few small modern plants with the proper facilities can process the cane juice, filter & store it frozen or deliver fresh same day delivery. This item is year round revenue with a bump in extra wages for the tourist season as many more persons will be enjoying the juice.

3        Coconut:

We have a huge market for coconut water we know palms grow well in Barbados we should increase the production of coconuts for water and Jelly for the supermarkets and the Tourist market/Hotels. Beach bars sell branded coconuts to the cruise ship passengers now, and it does not cost foreign exchange. We however have a shortage of coconut water and its products now. The usage of coconut water can increase by many multiples utilising both the plantation system and small farmer setup that we currently have. This crop is year round revenue which means no yearly pressure months of high wages and waiting years to get the money repaid. This however depends on whether the trees are newly planted (you have to wait about 5-7 years before significant production starts.) or you use better farming practices such as fertiliser to increase yields from exiting trees.  All of the investigative work is being done by the Barbados Ministry of Agriculture. Just the will and literally seed money by the government is now needed to bring in the high yielding seed nuts. The proposed first shipment is about 6,000 treated nuts. These can be grown with the palm trees as a mix plantation crop during the same time the germinating and initial nurturing of the palm oil palms trees.

4        King Grass:

King Grass is a tall grass and is easy to grow. It does not deplete the soil of its nutrients and can be grown repeatedly on the same spot. An amount is presently being grown and sold as fuel to BL&P to generate electricity it does not require the looking after and fertilising like sugar cane plants. As an added benefit that hardly any one talks about is that this grass is loved by cows and black belly sheep as forage. If it is encouraged it may be the start of a beef and lamb industry. The more that cows and sheep walk to forage for their grass the leaner and tougher the meat, now with the advent of the grass being provided the animals will not have to walk and they will get fatter and the meat will be more tender and can be in greater demand. Barbados beef does have a nice and desirable distinctive taste but tough, only a real life experiment will tell if the beef will indeed be tenderer. With this king grass the dairy cows may be more tender when put out to market as their forage will be given them daily. Note: that this is currently done on dairy farms at present with other grasses in the form of silage.

5        Medical Marijuana:

Marijuana will grow well in the type of soil and conditions we have. Medical marijuana is the plant without the THC the ingredient that makes one high. To grow this we will need to process it to the stage of the oil and tablet form, not export the raw material. We want the value add to remain in Barbados. This type of item will be in greater demand all over the world while the rest of the world concerns itself with decriminalising the use of high THC marijuana for smoking. The medical uses for this type of marijuana have greater access to the world for a host of illnesses. This is the plant with great future use in the medical industry and would have a premium value attached to it.

Marijuana growing and reaped in Barbados.

6        Perennial Larceny:

The obvious problem that no politician venture to talk about. They may talk about it as in “we import too many items we can grow here in Barbados” or “we need food security” or “as a nation we are living too high we need to live within our means” or “Buy Bajan” or “have your own kitchen garden” but never that the small farmer who tries and grows most of the vegetable crops in Barbados are being robbed daily by crop thieves at night, the large scale farmers have already given up. Why plant and tend a crop for 10 weeks and the last week half is stolen and if you set a guard the last week, the 9th week half of it is stolen or the guard says” I did not see anything I must have been at the other end of the field”. We now have a situation that the large farmers are out and the small farmers who supply the bulk of local produce only get to sell half of what they sowed. The perennial larceny law needs up grading. The penalties needs stiffening, the police needs to respond within 20 minutes and the people protecting their land/livelihood/family can be given permission to use any type of force including using firearms. Now you know why yams/onions/carrots/sweet potatoes/butternut squash/water melons/other melons/beans/peppers/ ETC. have so high a selling price.

Since the PM rightly so, has embarked on a plan to make Barbados Government work and work correctly get the AG to do his part.

Max Total Acreage  that can be Available
Suggested usage Acres %
King Grass 10,000 36
Oil Palm 9,000 32
Coconut 3,000 11
Sugar Cane Juice 5,000 18
Medical Marijuana 1,000 4
Total 28,000 100
Barbados has 28,000 acres of arable land

All of the waste that might be generated by these products/crops (oil palm/coconut etc.) can be utilised with the King Grass to be burnt to create electricity and any resultant ash can be recycle back to the farms/plantations as a potash source for fertilising crops.

Based on the topography of the hilly country side of St. Andrew & St Joseph those lands are presently not utilised, which is the better crop to use that will be easier/practical to get out of the valleys. – Oil palms and medical marijuana

BL&P can say now how much King Grass they can use now and in the future and if they want to use it as the main source for their boilers and the farmers can calculate how many acres are needed to satisfy BL&P with the rest for sheep/goat & cattle forage. No more Forex for furnace oil going out of the country.

All said and done Barbados can have a bright future in agriculture if the above are implemented and we have not touched as yet on the expanded role of the Agricultural station propagation unit in fruit (& other types) enhance trees or an education program how to….. Graph trees (Air Layering Propagation)/control pest/fungi/fertiliser use/their outreach to house holders. I have seen dounce/dunks the size of a golden apple and sugar apples/guava that could not fit in one hand. We need those here in Bim.

It will take a while for any vision of agriculture to materialise the fastest one that can start is Sugar Cane Juice followed by King Grass & Medical Marijuana. Oil Palm & Coconut have a few years before we can see the results. We can start with a real vision (like above) without which we will all perish.

Good article and a positive case for the redistribution of land. The majority of land in Barbados is owned by a “small” group of individuals who do not appear to be motivated to work their land for the good of the nation. What we are witnessing is agricultural land been sold for developing housing units – a trend that must be curtailed.

South Africa appears to be on the right track.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-45026931

  4. Is there any basis to support the belief that redistribution of land will result in agricultural use? Did anybody take note of the citizen who inquired at the recent Town Planning consultation if the new government will allow subdivision for housing in Zone 1 areas? The answer from the prime minister was a resounding yes, in fact there is a cabinet paper to be submitted on the matter shortly.

Happy to see Barbados has cancelled “crop-over”. Trinidad has oil, Antigua has international sailing, and St. Lucia has bananas. An island cannot generate GDP (year ’round) on people singing in a language that international tourist cannot understand. I hope you will rid the island of green monkeys and wild tamarind. Michael Jackson, and Elvis Presley generate GDP from their memorabilia. Be honest, how much GDP did “breakfast-in-bed” generate for Barbados? Nada. Local spending on credit cards is not foreign hard-currency. You are in a mess by living off your own “protein” and not the “fat” from foreign countries. Your muscles will eventually “die’. Find a product like Jamaica does and ship thousand of cans of Akee and salt-fish. Bajan Black pudding could be shipped to North America and generate hard currency. If Robert Manufacturing started an assembly line production of “Bajan black pudding”, GDP would soar and the rich locals would buy bonds (GIC’s) paying 4%. I currently get 5% on savings (calculated every 3 months) from a local brand of rum because I researched what rum was selling up here for $.U.S.150.00 per 1.14 L. Do the math. Haynes Darlington.

  6. The growing of edicinal marijuana. This is an interesting land use policy. How about the growing of HEMP. Hemp has many uses. The one i found really interesting is the making of hemp fabric. It can also produce feed for the animals and oils for maybe green fuels, just like the Palm oil fruit.

All in all good article, nothing is missing just the willingness of the interested parties in moving the land back into agricultural production. There seems to be a “sell the land for housing” mindset lurking deep within the land holding subset of the population.

  7. In the news today is the plan for beer producers in North America to brew marijuana beer, absent alcohol content. Barbados has a brand position in this segment? Low hanging opportunity? Go private sector!

  8. @David,

I posted about Molson marijuana beer yesterday in the Diaspora Corner.

Barbados should legalise weed now so that a local breweries can get in the game.

  9. As part of the way forward in Agriculture green house farming should be included.

is there a full report on the Town and Country Planning town hall meeting? i want to understand the BLP’s plan in this regard

  11. MJ Beer.?

I think there is a beer called “Miller High Life” I just i may be getting competition for the real “high” is the MJ beer do reach the market. The Miller high life brand was around since 1903 i guess they knew something that we didnt?

The uses are endless, right now Cannabis oil is the ģreat healer…always has been, there are people on the island with the knowledge on how to extract this oil….the government need only provide the land and start up capital for these local people.in the depressed areas.

Growing medical marijuana….growing for hemp and other uses takes second place only to growing food….houses are now being built from hemp…

At least 15 thousand acres should be allocated for medical marijuana/hemp growing and the rest goes to AGRICULTURE food growth

  13. ” housing in Zone 1 areas? ” Theoretically not a problem if septic tank systems or connection to a sewage system sre mandated.

  14. Some one better trade mark “MaryJane” as a brand quick quick as we enter the market of cannabis infused beverages. The number 2 beer marker in Canada is looking into cannabis infused beverages to prop up the slowing beer sales in Canada. I guess the good ols fashioned alcohol is under threat. I wonder what the true die hard lager beer believers will be saying the untimely death of the traditional lager beer?

  15. Legalising weed now could provide a ” get out of jail card ” and free up space at Dodds.

  16. @Hants

Missed your post yesterday about the maribeer. In Barbados we tend to do the analysis Stuart style aka sluggish. If we wanted to be cautious we could follow the Bahamas model for casino gambling and limit the sale of maribeer to tourists.

  17. @ hants

housing in zone 1 area is a very bad idea even with the septic tanks. humans are such that mistakes will be made and bajans love to take short cuts and or ignore regulations.

besides, there is no real need to do so. there is no shortage of residential land or housing stock in Bim unless I am badly mistaken.

MAM should have said that was one of her plans during her campaign so that Bim voters would know what they were in for.

not that it would have made a difference tho

The calls from the populace gets louder for govt to engage in the wholesale and distribution of drinks beverages of any kind that are addictive !self destructive to the social enviroment
    When will we ever learn

  20. We already have squatting in zone 1 areas, Belle comes to mind. It is one of the reasons the blogmaster was against the unbridled immigrant flow we allowed from Guyana. Also you have to consider the right technology can be used to mitigate concerns.

Exfowl…why don’t you educate yourself before posting deliberately uninformed, miseducated nonsense….neither Cannabis beer nor Oil are addictive…

Once used in the dosage prescribed or advised, even ised in cooking, there is no Cannabis addiction.

Smoking and abusing anything produces an addiction.

  22. Tell me something that i have not heard already. Govt should step out the way of private sector. Let the market decide etc. Govt should be a regulator etc. Now Planting houses in zone one is not allowed because of the threat of contamination issues with raw sewerage eetc.

An answer; make sure he properties construct septic tanks etc. Now this is the problem I have; Govt. tends to be bad at most things it does except waste money, or pour good money after bad money on projects etc.

How do we ENSURE and then MAKE SURE that if a property is constructed in a Zone one that the septic tank is up to par and kept up to par over the anticipated life time of the home or septic tank? Will we turn a blind eye when the home owner faces difficulties and their septic tank is in need o repair? Cud dear give he/she a break dem ole now and it is just one septic tank, what can that do to us(water supply). will politics as usual allow/interfere with non compliance/compliance of the septic tank’s upkeep? who knows?

There are too many questions that we cannot answer. but i know the humans we have about here; Govt. is not very good at policing anything, especially when it is buried in the ground. The Govt. even allowed the premier septic tank(BWA Sewerage tank” to grow grass and trees. and that tank is above ground and very large. If Govt. had a better track record of maintenance and policing regulations i would be more keen on relaxing the zone 1 housing development restriction.

  25. @ David

squatting is another thing that has to addressed.

there should be no squatting on any lands in Bim, especially by non nationals.

how fair is it that bajans in general have to face the market and buy land but some people, especially non nationals could come into a country and squat ant then a Govt looking for votes gives them the land? i mean what the hell is that?

do you think that will encourage more squatting?

were it left up to me i would push down all those houses in the Belle and wherever people squat on Govt land especially non nationals and especially in Zone 1 areas

  26. Should be no squatting allowed period! The problem is that our culture has permitted political expediency to trump guidelines established for public good. SirFuzzy raised this point above, enforcement, enforcement, enforcement amen.

  27. What great healer. Marijuana oil. Does any one knows how much it cost for one gram of that oil and the length of time it takes to see any significant benefits
Outside lessening the pain it does not cure or heal the cancer
The side effects from the oil might be less chagelling but the problem of the cancer is not solved and within time the patient has to resort to conventional treatment which in most times it is too late
The hype about marijuana effects as a cure for cancer is driven by fear and greed

I was lucky to be on you-tube to see the challenges that Kentucky tobacco farmers were having with growing HEMP. the news report was quick to point out that HEMP was not MJ. It is part of the species but doesn’t share all the values that MJ has. THC levels of HEMP are much lower than MJ. The Kentucky police chief was not in favour for the growing of HEMP as it was virtually impossible to tell the difference between HEMP and MJ when doing aerial inspections etc.

These farmers were going to try to grow HEMP as the tobacco prices were falling as the world reduces the consumption of tobacco worldwide. So instead of only lobbying Uncle SAM for aid they looking to grow themselves outta their situation. Thus a switch to HEMP.

Our MIN of Ag should consider a pilot project for HEMP only. Attempting to grow MJ will invite Perennial Larceny grand mur Herb price will be depressed; drugs dealer may quietly lobby for curtailment o the pilot project lol.

If we consider growing HEMP; will we fall back into being a raw material producer status, like we did with cane sugar? Or will we explore the possibility of being a player further along the production/product cycle? Time will tell.

Hemp Oil is the purest form of concentrated Cannabis. Taken by drops orally, unlike Cannabis that is smoked, it is not carcinogenic.

When marijuana is legalized people can make their own quite simply, until then you may risk being prosecuted. Big Pharma will stand in the way until they can patent it and thereby control it! Big Pharma, “CREATES CUSTOMERS NOT CURES”.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE ASPECT OF THE CELL CYCLE THAT IT ATTACKS IN REDUCING TUMORIGENESIS?

  34. I have a question or maybe it is an observation. I am being a bit high minded as i reflect.

If the industrialist countries like Canada, EU or USA didn’t push for the decriminalisation or legalisation of MJ how would countries like Barbados be viewed if we had pursued a MJ industry year ago? Would Barbados be seen as a rouge country? Will we been blacklisted for promoting a MJ industry.

I say all of this because the benefits that MJ by-products have not changed. Their benefits are there to be had whether the MJ was seen as legal or illegal. Maybe now there is a change because money and large amounts of maoney can be made.

The economic models we follow are never home grown; or initiated by us,. We must never be a leader of our own destiny, we must follow a set of rule handed down to us.

To be very honest even if we do develop a MJ or HEMP industry we will be a minor player. The multinationals have access to capital; land and legislation(lobbying and other efforts) that will tilt the balance into their favour. I don’t think we get it; we are only allowed to progress or succeed not on our own terms by on theirs.

In any model followed we honestly need to examine what role we(Barbados) has being assigned, and wipe outta our mindset that we can punch above our weight.

“What is the government waiting on then? Direct Minister Weir to setup a project team with an adequate brief and let us go!”

He has already received that “brief”, unofficially.

But the BLP is seized with the same disease as the previous administration. That ‘implementation deficit disorder ‘caused out of fear of its perennial army of occupation and electoral backlashes from the religious zealots and Christian fundamentalist nutters.

This government would rather seek to extract taxes from the imported cannabis finished products than to decriminalize its local cultivation and production to underpin a potentially profitable cottage industry.

If the mary jane is decriminalized from where would the likes of Bounty and Friends make their easy ‘high’ living off the illegal hog?

ACETYLCoA IS REQUIRED FOR FAT PRODUCTION AND CHOLESTEROL

  37. @sirFuzzy

Another meaty observation, you need to remain on that high lol.

Decisions of this nature will always require lead from the first world countries. It is is the way the decision model is constructed. Our leaders have to examine the Singapore model as it relates to planning to position the country to pick and develop global opportunities to overlap with national strategic plans.

  38. First before Barbados can grow and cultuvate weed
The steps and standards necessary for selling in the international markets will be those hurdles to overcome driven by international regulations that impedes and frustrate the process
The talk about cultivating weed for medicinal or any other use on BU is where it it begins and where it ends

  39. Although we are not pursuing planting and Producing Cannabis with high THC, I think some of us are under the wrong impression.

The medical marijuana that was propose is not the kind that gets you high I did not want to get in the talk of decimalising marijuana that would have led the discussion in the wrong direction and take too long for government to make up its mind the growing of the low THC or no THC marijuana is an easy start for this type of agriculture as if you smoke this you will not get high so no one will steal the crop and it will be used for the intended purpose only and to produce it to the quality you will need to have a facility set apart for this purpose.

Cannabinoids refer to any group of related compounds that include cannabinol and the active constituents of cannabis. They activate cannabinoid receptors in the body. The body itself produces compounds called endocannabinoids, and they play a role in many processes within the body that help to create a healthy environment. I think it’s also important to note that even cannabis stripped of its psychoactive compounds can treat cancer effectively.

Cannabinoids have been proven to reduce cancer cells, as they help rebuild the immune system. Although not every strain of cannabis has the same effect, more and more patients are seeing success in cancer reduction, and in a short period of time, by using cannabis. Contrary to popular belief, however, smoking cannabis does not treat disease within the body very well, as therapeutic levels cannot be reached through this method of ingestion. Eating the plant or consuming cannabis oil is the best way to absorb cannabinoids within the body.

The world has come a long way in accepting this plant as a medicine rather than a harmful substance. It’s a plant that could benefit the planet in more ways than one. While cannabis is not yet accessible or offered as treatment in the way that chemotherapy is, more people are becoming aware of it, which is why it’s so important to continue to spread information like this. We can no longer deny the tremendous healing power of this plant.

Dr. Georgie Porgie you may find these links helpful. “Not long ago, we published an article examining a recent case study where doctors used cannabis to treat leukemia. You can read more about that here.

  42. Being close to a friend who has cancer and has been taking marijuana oil gives me an insight to the positive as well as the negative of the oil

  43. @ Sir Fuzzy @BU August 2, 2018 8:57 AM

What I have presented is a crop of low or no THC marijuana that has a medical market, no real competition, keeping the value added in Barbados since no one else is as yet in the market we may get a premium price and not hemp as in we do not want to be in the “dog eat dog” world of who can be the lowest cost producer of hemp as would happen with hemp.

Barbados is not a low cost place we have to choose wisely or we will fail. I want to Win, Win, Win as the man says and I will not tier of Winning. (No Bajan want to live in a grass house)

As an aside there aerial detectors now that can tell what is hemp or marijuana by the smell while flying through the air. I do not know if the technologies have reach the level to tell the difference between Low THC or High THC marijuana.

  44. James,

He is not the only one; they are one or two at Cave Hill that do the same thing. Talk nonsense thinking it impresses people.

  45. What is so difficult to understand? Singapore (Lee) looked at the advantages they had to offer as a country for example its strategic location, the culture of discipline, a few others that elude at the moment and mesh it to their strategic plan.

  46. What is the Singapore model as it relates to planning to position the country to pick and develop global opportunities to overlap with national strategic plans?
This is the rubbish that passes as intelligent discussion. Pure gobbledegook.

@Hal. What do you see as the way forward? What many tangents do we pursue in order to maximize our national return on the many investment we have to make.

BTW I wanna mention China here. A country that over the many years deliberately allowed or encouraged the theft of IP in order to build out its now mammoth economy. (China was not a rule of law nation if you owned something they wanted to copy). In order words do you ultimately win by playing by the rules(usually set by those who seek to suppress or oppose you)?

Does the Cannabis Oil your friend is taking look like Black Strap Molasses? It Should. So Far as I understand they are no known Side-effects besides Healing and and Ultimately Curing.

  49. RE Contrary to popular belief, however, smoking cannabis does not treat disease within the body very well, as therapeutic levels cannot be reached through this method of ingestion. Eating the plant or consuming cannabis oil is the best way to absorb cannabinoids within the body.

THIS IS QUITE CONTRARY TO ESTABLISHED KNOWLEDGE OF ABSORPTION OF DRUGS INTO THE BODY
INHALATION IS KNOWN TO BE A FASTER METHOD OF ABSORPTION OF SUBSTANCES THAN INGESTION, BECAUSE IT BY PASSES THE LIKELIHOOD OF DESTRUCTION IN THE LIVER BY THE VERY EFFECTIVE LIVER ENZYME SYSTEM

RE They activate cannabinoid receptors in the body.
WHERE ARE THESE RECEPTORS TO BE FOUND? ALL OVER THE BODY?
AFTER ALL ALPHA, BETA RECEPTORS ETC ARE FOUND IN SPECIFIC ORGANS,

RE The body itself produces compounds called endocannabinoids, and they play a role in many processes within the body that help to create a healthy environment.

    CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THIS?

I think it’s also important to note that even cannabis stripped of its psychoactive compounds can treat cancer effectively.
SO THEN WHY NOT JUST SMOKE THE WEED?
HOW DOES CANNIBIS EFFECT THE CELL CYCLE?
    HAS THIS YET BEEN DETERMINED?

I SUSPECT I WILL BE ACCUSED OF MAKING MY SELF AN ASS ON THE BLOG BY DARING TO PITCH THE LEVEL TO A HIGHER ONE.
