Having read your article that was carried by the Nation Newspaper on Friday, June 24, 2016, under the caption “The ox to the stall,” it is surprising that you have categorized Mr. Mark Maloney’s business ventures as doing a lot for Barbados. I see it the other way around. The taxpayers’ money and the lucrative contracts awarded by the Government of Barbados have done a lot for Mr. Maloney.

While you did not state it, you left us to compare Mr. Maloney’s breaking the law to Rosa Parks breaking the law. When Rosa Parks broke the law by refusing to get up out of her seat, she was standing up for her civil rights. No civil rights of Mr. Maloney have been violated. In fact, since you have inferred the topic of civil rights, I must inform you that any black Barbadian can now demand those coveted contacts as part of their civil rights which are now being violated as they are clearly being discriminated against by a political group.

When I read the sentence that Mr. Maloney gets things done and that within weeks he can clean up the garbage, my mind instantly went to those green garbage trucks that are sitting in the harbour unclaimed. Were you trying to inform the people of Barbados that the Government has signed another Public Private Partnership with Mr. Maloney? Could these green garbage trucks be the reason why the Minister of the Environment who is responsible for ensuring that Barbados is clean has been negligent in his duties? Does it mean that the tax payers will again be saddled with an additional burden for garbage disposal in the form of another levy? I hope that my thoughts are not correct and the trucks have no connection to Government or the collection of public garbage because as far as the public is aware, no contracts have been tendered for any such arrangements.

There is a problem with the basis on which Government awards contracts. The rules of the tendering process must be changed to ensure that contacts are awarded fairly and transparently to the entire population, perhaps even on a proportionate basis. No Government should award public contracts exclusively to one sector of the population. I am committed to social justice; I am not against others becoming wealthy but I am on a quest for equality for all Barbadians. How could you bring a suggestion that a man who is in clear violation of the law clean up the Courts? Are you inferring that he is already above the law?

Sincerely,

Heather Cole

It is startlingly obvious that the majority commenting and contributing here are those that ear their views regularly on BU. It is clearly recognizable that they are of a Cliquish Mentality that feels that this Channel of Expression is Exclusive to them. They Astonishingly display Traits which are Unwelcoming and Unfriendly to new comers and that leads me to other observations.

With these characteristics in place some even are Envious and Territorial as when another Groupie shares their opinion with a new comer they loudly exclaim on another stream, “ Don’t try to pit us against each other. XXX and I are like kindred spirits”… when no such objective was ever intended in the first place.

This Article to begin with as ac rightly pointed was written with Racial Undertones intent on Divisiveness ac (July 4, 2016 at 6:19 AM #). I shared a story that clearly demonstrates that even with high caliber Rally Drivers that Motor Sports is Not Selective to whites only. Another shared a similar story but in the Construction field and was Ignored Generally!

What resulted, those that Support Racism or they have a hard time coming to grips with the context of the information shared because they have held on to other Fallacies for so long, exhibited a Heartless but telling Characteristic and preferred to continue their GARBAGE talk as if this meant 0!!!

Wow & WOW!!! You know David when you loose Valuable Writers and Contributors, examine the above.

Freedom of Speech is not limited to a few, however by the example displayed here, it would take some kind of belly to give BU the time of day. I know that is not your intent. I recognize you are determined is to generate more and more conversation to invite the Broad Society in, that all may have a Voice, even regardless of what your personal views may be. That is the right approach and I commend you!

  4. My response is based on fact. Sir i clearly understand the simple logic of cause and effect which is indisputable
You want to protray the glories of a fourteen blp administration but do not want to accept the negative fall out in principle due to high borrowing to induce manufacturied growth that placed barbados on a fiscal cliff
Sir not going to argue numbers but the significance of those numbers and their relevancy in sustaining an economy
The fact being that after all the fiscal gains acheived under the blp when crunch time came the gains were swallowed up by several fiscal weakness in the economy because of the lack of not having strong structual policies in place to withstand economic shocks

  5. Artax,

Don’t keep harping on the blogmaster! He isn’t perfect. Why yesterday even I let a little dig go unanswered!

Do your thing! My lazy tail depends on you to put all these things into writing.

By the way, yesterday Alvin tried to defend the impossible lying manifesto promises (like David Thompsom’s) by reminding me of Erskine Sandiford’s demise after he admitted our perilous position. This is supposed to excuse them from speaking the truth to the electorate in an effort to win the election.

What is your response to that?

  6. Just make your points. Whether a few here want to be clannish or not is irrelevant.

  9. When the blp start throwing around numbers they must realize that within those numbers there is a heavy burden of responsibility to bare and how those numbers effect the economy short term as well as well as long term.
The truth being that lack of efficient structural policies were the reason the economy flounder.also note worthy that the instabilty started about around 2006 and OSA did not to fix or correct
Hence when the global fiasco took place barbados was and ill prepared.
So please do not try to give me all these pie in the sky examples about the last fourteen years while ignoring the realities of an economy burden in past debt and unable to sustain itself.
Simple economics which does not need an Eistein to to figure
The blp ought to be ashsmed when pointing fingers especially with all the money you said the country had but could not even find the heart to fix the water system yet like to boast about fourteen years in goverance and prosperity The question all should be asking is what did the blp do with the money that should have gone to fix and repair the infrasturcture of the country and sustain the economy
Look do not make me laugh…do.

  10. @ ac July 5, 2016 at 11:13 AM #

You are a LIAR. You cannot REFER to ANY phrase, sentence or paragraphs in both my contributions that could be described as I “wanting to portray the glories of a fourteen blp administration,” especially since, in my 10:36am contribution, I was critical of Arthur’s economic policies.

Your responses are so much HEAVILY RELIANT on POLITICAL RHETORIC and GENERALIZED STATEMENTS that you “move the goal posts” when it is politically expedient to do so and “create your own straw men to knock them down.”

And you have done this by DELIBERATELY IGNORING the SUBSTANTIVE points in my contributions to take the focus into your comfort zone or level of intelligence.

Hence the comment: “You want to portray the glories of a fourteen blp administration but do not want to accept the negative fallout in principle due to high borrowing to induce manufactured growth that placed Barbados on a fiscal cliff.”

Borrowing is not synonymous with the BLP. Over the years BOTH the BLP and DLP have borrowed heavily, either to “boost” the foreign reserves (as was done by the BLP) or to finance non-productive purposes (as currently done by the DLP).

The economic growth rate is likely have a linear negative impact on the public debt-to-GDP ratio. In other words, a DECLINE in the ECONOMIC GROWTH RATE (ceteris paribus) is ASSOCIATED with an INCREASE in the PUBLIC DEBT-to-GDP ratio.
The economic consequences of a government pursuing a policy of high and potentially persistent public debt will be DELETERIOUS for economic growth.

Even CXC economics students know that “high borrowing to induce manufactured growth” is a lotta shiite. Perhaps you should read “Economics for Dummies.”

Rather than regurgitating second hand information on economic policy from your DLP cohorts, you should avail yourself with simple economic theory. Mentioning “high borrowing to induce manufactured growth” is NOT a “response based on fact,” but is “distinctly indicative” of someone who is regurgitating shiite and trying to sell it in BU as “FACT.”

I wanted to read Alvin’s contribution before responding, but I could not find it.

However, don’t become too worked up over “Calvin,” He could be “Alvin C,” hence the name CAlvin.

  12. Artax,

    Sorry! It’s on Walter’s blog July 4, 8:56 am.

  13. sir please show or explain where is the growth brought forward from the previous administration that should/would have sustain the barbados economy long term
My point being that if there was any substantial or significant growth it should have been sufficient and substantial enough to sustain the economy taking into consideration an area like employment.
The truth of the matter is that the growth seen in those years were generated by tourism and a housing boom which felt the external shocks of the global economy and succumb leaving barbados vulnerable and struggling to make ends meet
Hence austerity methods had to be put in place

  14. @Silence is Content are you of the opinion that the status quo is not to be questioned? Do you like things the way they are? Did you read Mr. Hoad’s article? If this article is racist, it only spelled out what was contained in Mr. Hoad’s article. That is what you should check for racism. There is absolutely no reason why the black majority in Barbados should not challenge the goverment on basis by which those contracts were awarded.

“Sir, please show or explain where is the growth brought forward from the previous administration that should/would have sustain the barbados economy long term..”

    @ ac

Rather than confining yourself to the subject matter, you seem to have assumed the characteristics of the calypsonian “Poonka” by being “all over the place,” “MAKING UP THINGS” as you go, perhaps to “fuel” your political agenda. As such, you are “creating straw men to knock them down.”

Can you refer to any sentence or phrase in my contributions, where I made any REFERENCE to “growth brought forward by the previous administration?”

By asking such a question, leads me to conclude that you DID NOT READ or UNDERSTAND my contribution.

Additionally, if you or the person whose shiite you are repeating verbatim, UNDERSTOOD economic growth and the EFFECTS of recessions on GROWTH and EMPLOYMENT, you would not have erroneously mentioned:

“My point being that if there was any substantial or significant growth it should have been sufficient and substantial enough to sustain the economy taking into consideration an area like employment.”

My friend, making such stupid statements only exposes your ignorance. I suggest that, since Walter will soon be rejoining your fold, you should seek advice from him, rather than the shiite hound who is presently advising you.

In economics there is something called the “BUSINESS CYCLE,” which is characterized by a series of cycles of economic expansion and contraction. These cycles occur due to the FLUCTUATIONS that an economy EXPERIENCES over a period of TIME as a result of CHANGES in ECONOMIC GROWTH.

In other words, ECONOMIC GROWTH [EG] does not REMAIN CONSTANT, and will change due to economic factors such as government policy (i.e. taxes) or non-economic factors, such as drought, man-made or natural disasters, etc.

When economic growth INCREASES, there is a corresponding INCREASE in INFLATION. In response, the government would have to implement/enact counter-inflationary policies in an effort to slow down the economic growth rate.

EG rises until it reaches a PEAK or its maximum level, the economy begins to taper off into a DOWNTURN. If the economy experiences TWO CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS of NEGATIVE GDP GROWTH, the economy is said to be in RECESSION. One of the “casualties” of a recession is unemployment, which INCREASES significantly.

    Here endeth the lesson.

“There is absolutely no reason why the black majority in Barbados should not challenge the goverment on basis by which those contracts were awarded”.

This statement is a Heather Cole Physiology Strategy, an appeal to Collectivism over Individualism, you certainly know how to play the audience!

The problem comes Ms. Cole with your appeal and one-sided view. People in Barbados, Black or White and in between should challenge the establishment on issues, which adversely affect society on a whole. We the people employ those in government not the other way around.

Your slant appeals to majority rule excluding minority’s freedom of speech and any involvement for positive growth in this country by minorities. I have been observing your trend and although you seem to have Bajan’s interest at heart it does not extend to minorities. Your dogma is the Power of the Collectivist over the Individual.

Collectivism means the subjugation of the individual to a group—whether to a race class or state does not matter (in your case minorities on this island). Collectivism holds that man must be chained to collective action and collective thought for the sake of what is called “the common good.

Do not make the mistake and think that an individualist is a man who says: “I’ll do as I please at everybody else expense.” An individualist is a man who recognizes the inalienable individual rights of man—his own and those of others.

An individualist is a man who says: “I will not run anyone’s life—nor let anyone run mine. I will not rule nor be ruled. I will not be a master nor a slave. I will not sacrifice myself to anyone—nor sacrifice anyone to myself.

The mind is an attribute of the individual. There is no such thing as a collective brain. There is no such thing as a collective thought. An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts. It is a secondary consequence. Each man alone must perform the primary act—the process of reason—.

We can divide a meal among many men. We cannot digest it in a collective stomach. No man can use his lungs to breathe for another man. No man can use his brain to think for another. All the functions of body and spirit are private. They cannot be shared or transferred”.

Each man or woman no matter their race, should have a say in this country, that is the value of Individual Sovereignty, the Freedom to Choose!

However your view is Skewed! I agree with ac “As i said before the tones in your articles sends radical messages of extremism messages that are political apparatus for danger built on a framework to destroy”.

“For example, neither BLP nor DLP has taken Barbados’s aging population into consideration.
This island is confronted by the prospect of large and rising future costs related to the aging of the population. Drastic measures are necessary to check the rapid growth of current and future liabilities of government and reduce its adverse consequences for long-term growth and monetary stability. This rapidly aging population presents Barbados with the prospect of enormous future costs that are not wholly recognised in current budget projections. For example, there has been a significant increase in the abandonment of senior citizens at both the general and district hospitals; their upkeep has to be undertaken by the state. Also, many individuals have not properly prepared themselves for retirement, and will often depend on the state for financial and other support. These factors, as well as the services that are already being provided by government, will ultimately incur additional costs to the tax payers of this country.”

    Artax,
Of course you are correct. I can amplify your comments by pointing to the fact that the pensions which top level civil servants will be receiving this month and all future months, have, naturally, not been pre-funded. Retirees are expected to live longer, so government’s future pension liabilities will escalate before they start to fall off around 2035. Where is this money going to come from?

On top of its pension obligations, Government will have to use up an increasingly high proportion of its revenue to service its debt. Right now that proportion is about a staggering 30%.

The NIS will be also put under severe pressure. Repayment of some of the 3 billion dollars owed to the NIS by the government will have to start soon. Again, where will the money come from?

Some individuals tried to prepare for retirement and the financial hardship that could result from premature death, but they fell victim to the CLICO fiasco. Where will the money come from to make CLICO’s policyholders whole?

Young and old alike are beginning to fall victims to a wide array of chronic non-communicable diseases. To its credit, the Government has recognized that the level of its health expenditures is unsustainable and has started discussing a way to solve the problem with major stakeholders. There is no easy solution, and the continuous consumption of fast foods, the high cost of fruits and vegetables, and high levels of alcohol and tobacco by many Barbadians will make the problem worse.

As if things were not bad enough, we have witnessed a drastic reduction in the revenue (precious foreign exchange at that) which we collect from offshore companies. The developed countries, if given their way, will wipe out all of our revenue from this source.

These economic and financial discussions must now be brought to the front-burner of our national political dialogue. This has nothing to do with being partisan. It has everything to do with the survival of Barbados.

“These economic and financial discussions must now be brought to the front-burner of our national political dialogue. This has nothing to do with being partisan. It has everything to do with the survival of Barbados.”

    @ Walter

I agree with the comments in your response to my contribution. At this juncture and in the aftermath of the prevailing protracted economic crisis, these are the types of issue we should discuss, rather than the usual parochial political issues.

Government’s current expansionary fiscal policy has coincided with an increasing, unfunded and age-related spending (i.e. statutory and early retirement pensions, health care costs and other expenditure related to aging, such as government’s home care programme, house repairs or replacements undertaken by the UDC and RDC).

Barbados is deemed to be an aging society. If we were to consider the island’s demographic profile, the ratio of old-age population to working-age population is projected to increase significantly. In addition to population aging and increasing expenditure relating to NCDs, Barbados will obviously experience problems as a result of rising per capita health care costs.

Additionally, taking the “variables” you mentioned into consideration, such as:

    • Retirees are expected to live longer, so government’s future pension liabilities will escalate before they start to fall off around 2035.
    • On top of its pension obligations, Government will have to use up an increasingly high proportion of its revenue to service its debt.
    • The NIS will be also put under severe pressure. Repayment of some of the 3 billion dollars owed to the NIS by the government will have to start soon. Again, where will the money come from?

We can only come to the obvious conclusion that any assessment of government’s fiscal situation based on a short-term perspective is incomplete and perhaps misleading. We must also ask the important question of to what extent should these accrued liabilities be reflected in debt estimates.

Maybe when we put away Contention, Strife, Vengeance, Hatred, Malice et al, our vision would become clearer and then and only then, the way may be opened to touch men’s hearts and penetrate the veils of their minds!

Evil Is Rampant and Covers the Whole Earth, none can Deny. Simply Look at the US today and the Pass that was given by the Federal Burro of INJUSTICE to Killery Clinton!

We are experiencing the most Corrupt, Unethical and Criminal Presidential Administration In American History.

You call it vindictiveness…I call it telling the truth….Freedom Crier

A real freedom crier would know this,

I was not socialized to practice fantasy and delusions, sugar coat or try to make criminals feel good about themselves, or make criminals feel like they are masters of me or gods of my destiny, those are the traits of a slave, I was not raised to display slave like qualities like most bajans…so I could see where you will be confused when being faced with the truth.

    I am not a babysitter.

A real freedom crier would also know this.

You can delude yourself all you want. Truth always wins.

  41. @ Freedom Crier, opps …….pun intended. How can my response to Mr.Hoads article which had the racial undertones be considered racist? Your cry is definitely not for freedom or the truth.

  42. @Hearher

Hoad preferred to wrote to Barbados Today to communicate that the editor of the Nation severely edited his article and therefore changed the meaning. Not sure why he wrote BU given the they also severely edited your submission. It appears that Hoad is also fearful of entering the BU forum. Wonder why!

  43. There might be some truth to what Hoad said about the editing process by the nation as most know that the Nation like to highlight sensationalism to sell newspapers
However Hoad still has more explanation to do by adressing the satirical racial overtones he uses in his other featuring articles

  44. @ David, I just read the article. It was a poor response. If I was wrong he should have set the record straight. Is he blaming the nation for the racial overtones? He should submit the original article to BU. I email my letter to both him, BU, the nation and BarbadosToday on Saturday. I will check to see if he sent me an emailed response.

  46. Heather I recognize your concerns about the whole Government Contract issue and you should be. The whole process should be transparent and contracts awarded to the bidders should they meet all the quality and qualifications that merit the contracts.

However some of the problems you may already understand is that there are only two Company’s in Barbados that can qualify to lay a Tar Mac at the Airport unless you open up the bidding to international bidders.

In like manner they are other companies that are uniquely qualified to do some of specialized projects like Edghill who did the infrastructure at the Careenage and Marenco Construction Company, who are also qualified to do marine work.

Construction like Civil, Structural and Marine require specific qualifications and infrastructure and Contracts should be awarded on that basic not on the merit of giving just anyone in construction a shot. Smaller contractors just do have the equipment or labour force.

In any area of Construction where a Company is qualified should be given a chance. Pressure should be put on Government to make the bidding process Fair and Transparent. Transparency has Nothing to do with the Majority or Minority, it is about Fairness and Being Equitable based on Merit.

  47. if what Hoad wrote as a response the Nation should reprint the article as was first submitted in its originality to clear the air
The inference of the articles as it appears seems to be very suggestive ad presumptions in trying to laid out a racist argument in defense of Maloney which kept plenty tongues wagging and branded Mr. Hoad as a racist NOT GOOD
If Mr. Hoad has the original copy maybe it might be in his best interest (or not depending whether or not the original content is less disparaging) to post the contents on BU
However it would be best if the Nation seeks to close this awkward chapter by reprinting the original content of the article
Having one character maligned or slimed is not a good thing and Mr. Hoad if he feels that a unjust was perpetrated to his name and his character in a rush of a media outlet need to sell salacious newspaper at his expense i believe he has legal options by which he can pursue remedy to rectify any personal damage to his reputation,
The ball is in Mr. Hoads court and he is the only one who can untangle the twine

  48. Just came on and the first thing I read is a sensible suggestion by ac.
Seems as if BU is lifting every boat.
    Even ac getting sense….
