A very simple old Bajan Pharmacist started the Barbados Diabetes Association way back in 1985. This nice old man invited me to be involved. Later Dr LA Forde became President before he became ill? (I hear he is ill).
When I was a student and intern, the master teacher on Diabetes in my view was Dr Victor S Evelyn. He could pontificate at length on a “mere” ulcer on a diabetic foot by giving the involved Biochemistry and Patho-Physiology. He could teach thoroughly on anything, actually.
When Dr Jordan taught he was supposed to be a Gastroenterologist, not an Endocrinologist.

I am glad to hear that Dr. Evelyn is doing well, because some of his boyhood Plymouth Brethren friends went to see him at Christmas 2011, and he was not well. He was a great athlete at school and a gifted pianist before excelling in Medicine.

Stress causes the adrenal glands to release adrenaline and nor adrenaline. These are both hormones and neuro transmitters. One of the things these hormones do is stimulate release of sugar into the blood stream. Remember these are the FIGHT FLIGHT AND FRIGHT hormones. Just as if I attacked you, you would release these hormones, so do you on those days when you are “stressed out.”
Just think of all those at home who are out of work, who cant pay their bills, who cant find the right foods to eat . I hear that even the yams and sweet potatoes we grew up on are expensive.
There is much talk about obesity too—also related to stress. Some new hormones discovered are related to this. Preservatives and additives to food might be involved.
Have you ever weighed yourself and found you have gained weight when you know for your sure you had been eating less.

GP..lol, yes…in the gym 4 days a week and still putting weight, stress is deadly. Some people would think that the islands are slower paced, so less stress, some years ago I found that to be so wrong, slower stress is deadlier than NYC type stress.
I am told despite the lies the ministers are telling about honey and milk with streets paved with gold…that the right foods are very expensive in Barbados, so eating well for the thousands who cannot find jobs, is a fantasy. …and with unscrupulous business people who are only out to make money, distributing their garbage everywhere….most people do not know what garbage or poisons are going into their systems.
Of course the dumb ministers would not know or care that shortly this would create an additional burden on the healthcare system, but that’s the epidemic of ignorance that permeates the political landscape….and the beat goes on.

GP, there is a rather burning question I wanted to ask you for the longest time. It has nothing much to do with religion but more about your other ‘hobby’, medicine.
I am sure you would unequivocally support the position of following your doctor’s advice to improve your chances of living a healthy and long life.
So how come there are so many doctors in Bim yet I have never seen any of them live to a ripe old age and paraded in the news as being blessed by God to reach a century?
Nor even Dr. Kevorkian made it to be a nonagenarian like Heimlich has.
It seems the good old book advice of making it to three score and then is good enough for most of your eagle quacks in Hippocratic guesstimating.
