Dump the G.O.P. for a Grand New Party

If a party could declare moral bankruptcy, today’s Republican Party would be in Chapter 11.

This party needs to just shut itself down and start over — now. Seriously, someone please start a New Republican Party!

America needs a healthy two-party system. America needs a healthy center-right party to ensure that the Democrats remain a healthy center-left party. America needs a center-right party ready to offer market-based solutions to issues like climate change. America needs a center-right party that will support common-sense gun laws. America needs a center-right party that will support common-sense fiscal policy. America needs a center-right party to support both free trade and aid to workers impacted by it. America needs a center-right party that appreciates how much more complicated foreign policy is today, when you have to manage weak and collapsing nations, not just muscle strong ones.

But this Republican Party is none of those things. Today’s G.O.P. is to governing what Trump University is to education — an ethically challenged enterprise that enriches and perpetuates itself by shedding all pretense of standing for real principles, or a truly relevant value proposition, and instead plays on the ignorance and fears of the public.

It is just an empty shell, selling pieces of itself to the highest bidders, — policy by policy — a little to the Tea Party over here, a little to Big Oil over there, a little to the gun lobby, to antitax zealots, to climate-change deniers. And before you know it, the party stands for an incoherent mess of ideas unrelated to any theory of where the world is going or how America actually becomes great again in the 21st century.

It becomes instead a coalition of men and women who sell pieces of their brand to whoever can most energize their base in order for them to get re-elected in order for them to sell more pieces of their brand in order to get re-elected.

And we know just how little they are attached to any principles, because today’s Republican Party’s elders have told us so by (with a few notable exceptions) being so willing to throw their support behind a presidential candidate whom they know is utterly ignorant of policy, has done no homework, has engaged in racist attacks on a sitting judge, has mocked a disabled reporter, has impugned an entire religious community, and has tossed off ignorant proposals for walls, for letting allies go it alone and go nuclear and for overturning trade treaties, rules of war and nuclear agreements in ways that would be wildly destabilizing if he took office.

Despite that, all top G.O.P. leaders say they will still support Donald Trump — even if he’s dabbled in a “textbook definition” of racism, as House Speaker Paul Ryan described it — because he will sign off on their agenda and can do only limited damage given our checks and balances.

Really? Mr. Speaker, your agenda is a mess, Trump will pay even less attention to you if he is president and, as Senator Lindsey Graham rightly put it, there has to be a time “when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”

Will it ever be that time with this version of the G.O.P.?

Et tu, John McCain? You didn’t break under torture from the North Vietnamese, but your hunger for re-election is so great that you don’t dare raise your voice against Trump? I hope you lose. You deserve to. Marco Rubio? You called Trump “a con man,” he insults your very being and you still endorse him? Good riddance.

Chris Christie, have you not an ounce of self-respect? You’re serving as the valet to a man who claimed, falsely, that on 9/11, in Jersey City, home to many Arab-Americans, “thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down.” Christie is backing a man who made up a baldfaced lie about residents of his own state so that maybe he can be his vice president. Contemptible.

This is exactly why so many Republican voters opted for Trump in the first place. They intuited that the only thing these G.O.P. politicians were interested in was holding onto their seats in office — and they were right. It made voters so utterly cynical that many figured, Why not inflict Trump on them? It’s all just a con game anyway. And at least Trump sticks it to all of those politically correct liberals. And anyway, governing doesn’t matter — only attitude.

And who taught them that?

But it does matter. I know so many thoughtful conservatives who know it matters. One of them has got to start the N.R.P. — New Republican Party — a center-right party liberated from all the Trump birthers, the Sarah Palins, the Grover Norquists, the Sean Hannitys, the Rush Limbaughs, the gun lobby, the oil lobby and every other narrow-interest group, a party that redefines a principled conservatism. Raise your money for it on the internet. If Bernie Sanders can, you can.

This is such a pivotal moment; the world we shaped after W.W. II is going wobbly. This is a time for America to be at its best, defending its best values, which are now under assault in so many places — pluralism, immigration, democracy, trade, the rule of law and the virtue of open societies. Trump will never be a credible messenger, or a messenger at all, for those values. A New Republican Party can be.

If you build it, they will come.

  1. It is pathetic that so many Amerikkkans (and Barbadians) prefer the phony, briefing-book politics of a cynical, vicious, foul-mouthed, corrupt dunce like Hillary Clinton, to the brash, vulgar, in-your-face frankness of Donald Trump. Neither is admirable, but at least Trump expanded the private empire he inherited from his father. Hillary is conceited and presumptuous without having done a thing to deserve her exalted status.

And this is the reason the US electorate deserves both retards….spread the stupidity around.

Deepak Chopra: Trump Is ‘Emotionally Retarded, Maybe Mentally Retarded’

The political rise of Donald Trump is so disturbing, even New Age guru Deepak Chopra has lost his good vibes.

In an interview Tuesday with Fox News Radio host Alan Colmes, the famed preacher of Transcendental Meditation and alternative medicine unleashed on the presumptive Republican nominee, using a pejorative to describe his mental capacities.

“I would never say this unless I believed it was 100% true, but he represents the racist, the bigot, the one who’s prejudiced, the one who is full of fear and hatred, the one who represents emotional retardation of a three-year old,” he said Tuesday. “And yet he’s so popular because he’s given permission to our collective psyche to express their darkest demons.”

He’s full of fear. He is angry. He has a lot of hatred. He pouts, he’s belligerent, he’s emotionally retarded,” the mindfulness meditation advocate reiterated.
In a Huffington Post column earlier this week, Chopra wrote that Trump has brought out the “shadow” in American politics—the “dark impulses” inside everyone, including himself.
“What I said just now [about Trump’s ‘retardation’], I would never say these things about anybody,” the guru confessed. “It’s not like me. But he’s bringing out the worst in me, because I, too, am fearful of what would happen to the United States of America and the rest of the world if, God forbid, he became president.”

After several minutes of scorning himself for giving into such negative “demons,” effectively feeding Trump’s desire for controversy, Chopra took it a step further: “Maybe I was too kind when I said he was emotionally retarded, maybe he’s mentally retarded too.”

Well, un-rhetorically, it is pain. It is joy. It is you and me and Alvin and AC and Pieces and Jefferson…and Donald and Hilary and too the defiant Dr GP. In sum, it is all of us.

That’s why we will never get it ‘fixed’. How do we fix ourselves!

    Oh lawd.

  8. Here is a local parallel. When Arthur led the BLP into the last general election the strategy was to target him and he was lampooned unmercifully. Now that he has moved against his party what happened? The very DLP party which slayed him is willing to include him as an economic advisor, accommodate him on the government side in the House etc.

  9. “The moon exists in consciousness—no consciousness, no moon—just a sluggishly expanding wave function in a superposition of possibilities. All happens within consciousness and nowhere else.” –Deepak Chopra

    WTF!

  10. That Deepak Chopra is a visiting lecturer at so called reputable medical schools like Harvard is indicative of the decline in American common sense. That decline would explain the rise of both Trump and Hilary.

  11. LOL @ Ping Pong
He is only saying that what we consider to be ‘reality’ is not an end in itself, but is just a function of the consciousness of our ‘living’. It is not a totally crazy postulation…
What proof do you have that you will not awaken tomorrow and ‘discover’ that everything that you thought was ‘reality’ has been nothing but a dream…?

The known interchangeability between energy and matter justifies the possibility that even such ‘permanent’ fixtures as the moon …may be nothing but fleeting manifestations of ‘energy’ that have been conceptualised purely for the benefit of our existence on earth.

  12. I like the Bush Master. Stick to tea and leave the other stuff alone… 🙂
You might awaken and think you can fly..

  13. How about a new Donkey Party? What’s the difference between the GOP and the Donkeys? One’s in your face while the other is deceitful but they’re both the same. They’re both LIARS and Warmongering Murderers just like Tomass Friedman who want America to continue fighting Israhell’s wars so the Jewish bankers can continue to steal the Arab’s, Africans’ and now Latin and Central Americans’ wealth. This noise is all about the Bankers. WIll Donald Trump carry out their mandate like Hillary and Obama?
He has surely surrounded himself with a few ‘jews’ but can they control Mr. Independent Loose Cannon and make him continue their criminal acts that favour Israhell? Maybe that’s what they’re afraid of.

Today, America is pissing her pants because her Controllers are so afraid of China and Russia you can hear her patellas rattling. She’s become a dog with all bark and no bite. No longer No 1. And September 30,2015 proved that.

America doesn’t need a ‘healthy’ 2 party system nor a healthy center-right party what America needs is a good judgement day and maybe, just maybe Donald J Trump is exactly what the doctor ordered.

  18. The way things have been going, and the strength of feeling he seems to bring out in his opposers, I have this nagging question at the back of my mind whether Trump would make it to the White House alive.

  19. are-we-there-yet Avatar
    are-we-there-yet

I’ve been thinking of the Donald Trump phenomenon somewhat along the lines of Georgie Porgie in his 10:13 post.

His progress so far has all the hallmarks of predestination.

Donald Trump, under normal circumstances would not have got so far. His apparent Sarah Palinesque intellectual attributes and an over endowment of several negative ones that seem to be negatively correlated with fitness to be a POTUS, appear to present overwhelming odds against him being in the position which he now holds of having a fairly reasonable path to becoming POTUS. This suggests to me that some higher transcendental force is possibly smoothing the path for him.

I think its possible that he’s been selected for the job of facilitating the coming Earth changes foretold in many religions and by many seers and shamans over Earth’s history.

If that is so he will most likely win the Presidency. Something will happen to take it away from Hillary who has all the ammunition and training and resources to stop him in his tracks and can actually only lose if that is also predestined.

I think we are possibly on the threshold of an epic battle for moving consciousness on Earth into another phase or dimension.

  20. de pedantic Dribbler Avatar

We had Depak Chopra with some amazing philosophical ‘mystic realism’ . Then Bushie sprinkled his Tea Leaves and well advised that tomorrow we could ‘discover that everything’ is but a dream of a false reality.

And then voila, Are-We capped it by surmising that Donald Trump is in fact that protagonist of our current reality that will be our dream. Or is it the other way around!

    BU is absolutely awesome!

Incidentally, Adolf Hitler surely proffered that he was predestined to fulfill prophecy as I so expect did Idi Amin and Lenin and too Mao Tse Tung.

When does the philosophy or prophecy stop and the self-fulfilling verbiage start?

If I am a Trump supporter this is the exact rhetoric to carry the day: it is predestined. No wonder the man says and does whatever he wants to he too must believe it is so written he will win.

If I am not. You guys send a frigging chill straight to my heart!

Skippa, wuh you gone very far to come to your conclusions about ‘predestination’….. what about our own local brass bowlery? Do you think that it is coincidence that we have Froon and company of idiots and thieves … and six /half dozen alternatives?
Do you think that it is a coincidence that after so many years of free education, we find ourselves accelerating towards the absolute nadir of our history?

Man is inherently vile and wicked, …and are naturally predisposed to the ways of evil.

In good times, a merciful dose of God’s righteousness provides a counter-balance that brings a semblance of common sense and order to our existence. However, we have hardened our hearts “by the deceitfulness of sin”, and focused solidly on our beloved ‘albino-centricity’ …and rejected God and his righteousness. As a result, we are being given full leeway to have our own free will…

There can ONLY be one outcome ….brass bowlery.
It is NOT predestination, It is the inevitable consequences of rejecting righteousness and truth for lies and for wicked, selfish, albino-centricity…. Remember.. the fight is not a winnable one against ‘flesh and blood’ – as wunna seem to think, but is against PRINCIPALITIES; against the powers of EVIL; against spiritual wickedness in high places….

…see if wunna can figure out why the Trumps, Hillarys, Froons, MAMs and other modern ‘leaders’ are the ones taking the forefront across this world of ours….

Only ONE way this shiite can possibly end.

I’m just trying to read the tea leaves on what is an awesome departure from normal being evidenced in Donald Trump’s advance to the White House. I don’t necessarily think that he is the feather that tips the scale towards Armageddon, but he might be. Who knows?

I think there are other indicators that we are in unusual times in addition to those that Bushtea seems to allude to. One of the most telling of these is the conclusion by a group of Scientists that a new Planet, Planet X is at the outskirts of our solar system. Such a finding, if corroborated, might give some credence to the presumed rantings of Zecharia Sitchin about the 12th Planet and provide an answer to the last part of your question above.

Re. the first part of that question, the “end times” may not be a day or a year or a millenium. but might be a continuum that is marked by the uncovering of outstanding entities like Trump and others coexisting with a seeming increase in spiritual and physical chaos in our world.

@David, as usual you have this knack for being extremely succinct with quite profound comments, as “In the absence of any rational explanation which explains why idiots are being considered for high office and good people cower in the shadows what is left but to venture into the realm of abnormal thoughts?”.

I hear you loudly and clearly. I also hear the corresponding “see if wunna can figure out why the Trumps, Hillarys, Froons, MAMs and other modern ‘leaders’ are the ones taking the forefront across this world of ours….Only ONE way this shiite can possibly end.”

And too the equally defeatist “Because the wrong people always are more grabby and pushy than those with altruistic intent”.

I have no idea if ‘the Lord is about to come for he world’ but I do KNOW that – notwithstanding the mystic seers who divine biblical prophecies- the inherent DUALITY of good and evil makes THIS moment in history as Right…. and as…Wrong as any other before to be our Sodom and Gammorah.

If this is the ‘abnormal thinking’ end times then we can go in some peace:

Nelson Mandela became the freely elected President of his nation and did so boldly (the good) disparaging the White ethos (the bad) of violent racial oppression.

Some good and wise people elected a Black President of the USA. The same country where the bad and stupid people may elect a racist, loud-mouthed billionaire buffoon.

And it would bring an end to the reckless, wanton, mass murder perpetuated by ISIL/DAESH/ISIS to advance their caliphate…and too the supposedly good intentions of western nations to export their brand of freedom and success.

We have had a good (and bad) run over these long 2000 years….haven’t we

Perhaps “predestination” was the wrong word.

I think that there is spiritual guidance of the trajectory of our physical world and the limits of our existence on it and that we are all guided to play our small parts leading towards an eventual denouement that only a few human entities have been allowed a glimpse at. Thus there is an overall predestination of all our individual actions to fit within the tapestry of the “now” moment. Some people throughout human history have played star roles in that tapestry. I think Trump might be one of those humans.

Bush and Cheney managed to convince a large part of the country that Kerry’s service in Vietnam was ignoble, while they who wiled away their time with service in the Texas national Guard and deferments in the USA were patriots.

Trump is the manifestation of the anti- Obama forces coming together in the Republican Primaries to try to replace him with someone who stands for everything that Obama is against. Trump is being rewarded as the standard bearer for those “Birthers” who claimed that Obama was not a legitimate President because he was not a natural born US citizen, and who viewed Obama as the Other, who claimed he was a Muslim but above all who were incensed at the thought of a Black President of the USA. The issue of natural born citizen receded when an actual naturalized US citizen (Ted Cruz) appeared on the ballot. The fear and loathing of Obama is so ingrained among some that when the US Army carried out military exercises in several States including Texas the Governor of Texas ordered the Texas National Guard to monitor the operation and declared “During the training operation, it is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed” (see Jade Helm Conspiracy). This is coming from an elected Governor, not some tin hat basement dweller spouting conspiracy theories.

When George W Bush left the US Presidency there were 149 “Patriot” groups, today there are approx 900. Many of these “Patriot” groups are white Supremacists organisations who used Obama’s Presidency as a tool to drum up recruiting.

In the past candidates like Trump would use a “dog whistle” appeal but he feels comfortable using a megaphone to get his message across, he can put it away the message has been received loud and clear by his followers. He is unsuitable by temperament and intellect to be anywhere near the WH. This is a man who mimicked the spasms of a disabled man, a man who attacks anyone who disagrees with him in a personal manner, whose latest escapade was to criticise a judge who ruled against him by attacking his heritage (another example of his birther comments).

TRUMP HAS BEEN RAISED UP FOR A KING JOSIAH MOMENT

After King Hezekiah died his son Manesseh was the worse king Judah had ever seen. His son was equally evil. They brought the kingdom to the bottom of the well, so to speak. But seemingly by accident the young King Josiah was shown a scroll of the law of God, which caused him to lead the people into revival.

God promised him that in his life time the judgement that God had planned for the nation would be postponed. And so it was that after his death the kingdom went down hill rapidly and was taken over by the Babylonians.

In like manner, under Shitbama, the so called greatest country in the world ever, and leader of the free world has gone to pot-both literally and figuratively. You have spoken a few truths in your over-the-top case against Obama above.

But the overwhelming impression I get from your rants above is that they are primarily fuelled by a Clarence Thomas type mentality. A mentality that hates the fact of being born into the black race and not the white predominant one. A self hater with an inferiority complex.

But you can rest assured that you are not alone. Besides Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell and Morgan Job and a few other brave phenotypic Blacks have more eruditely championed that mindset.

Diversity of thought is good and enriches the beautiful tapestry of life!

Take the gloves off you can dispense with the “all due respect”.

A biased Judge? What is wrong with the ruling? Trump obviously wants to keep the secrets of Trump University (I used the word University advisedly because some States have said he couldn’t use the term ‘University” to market his scam) under wraps. Trump the successful business man has a string of business failures behind him but he is the epitome of the businessman whose personal fortunes grow as their companies wither.

The President can’t order the IRS to do anything if your Dr. Carson was audited perhaps his number came up, Trump claims he can’t release his Tax returns because he is being audited (did Obama order that too?) How come Trump is not critical of Obama for that favour. Incidentally Obama can’t tie Dr. Carson’s shoes but can Dr. Carson tie his own? Trump labelled him as “low energy”.

Americans have a habit of burning their flags in protest, they did it while protesting against the Vietnam War and in other protests. The US Supreme Court has ruled that flag burning is protected speech under the First Amendment (see Texas vs Johnson).
There is video evidence of Trump mocking a reporter who was critical of him, the reporter from NYT has a chronic condition which restricts the movement of his arms, what kind of man mocks disabled people?

Immigration? Yuh mean to tell me that you are criticizing a President who submitted an Immigration Bill that the Republicans refused to pass, Marco Rubio (Little Marco as per Trump) supported this bill until he came under withering fire by members of the right wing of the Republican Party and this initial support caused him votes in the Primaries. Yuh can’t have your cake and eat it too.

BTW wasn’t Obama supposed to be the anti-Christ?

rE But the overwhelming impression I get from your rants above is that they are primarily fuelled by a Clarence Thomas type mentality. A mentality that hates the fact of being born into the black race and not the white predominant one. A self hater with an inferiority complex.

SO YOU ARE A PSYCHOLOGIST TOO?
    BUT YOU ARE QUITE WRONG
I AM KNOWN FOR DEFYING WHITES, AND MOCKING THEM WHILE PRETENDING TO LAUGH WITH THEM
AND NO I DONT HAVE AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX- FAR FROM IT

    GP;

No! I am definitely not a psychologist.

I think I am merely someone who likes to unweave puzzles of all sorts. I think that the sum total of someone’s writings and sayings and statements re. former actions, give some indication of the mindset and type of person who has penned such writings to anyone who takes the time to study them even if that person is not a psychologist.

You have a plethora of writings on BU on a large number of topics. I think that they paint a picture of you that can actually be compared with other persons who have similar written outspoken views on related topics. Thomas Sowell has a huge history of writings that almost always paints the black man in a very negative light. I think he operates from a position of an intrinsic inferiority complex. I think your writings above on all things Obama mirrors Thomas Sowell’s views on Black people in the USA. Google THomas Sowell.

But, as you said, I might be wrong. I am no expert in this area.

  46. Clearly GP trumps (no pun intended) the US electorate, which elected President Barack Obama twice after lengthy and well documented electoral campaigns. But he must not lose sight of the fact that the interpretation of the limited powers granted by US constitution is the prerogative of the US Supreme Court, not the President. In 2007/2008 the US was on the edge of the abyss, the careful leadership of President Obama must be credited in large part with the growth and stability of the US economy since that time. Any angst about the failing moral direction of the US must include the tone set by the White House, and on this score President Obama and his family are exemplary, but in a free country, it must also include scrutiny of the purveyors of the ‘prosperity gospel’ and all other “spiritual leaders’ who have failed the nation in the fight against spiritual wickedness.

You said “BTW ARE YOU THE MAN THAT WENT TO PARKINSON THAT PROMISE ME A GLOWING WRITE UP ON TEACHER EUGENE PILGRIM”

    NO!!!!!

I don’t know you. I can’t even remember the name you disclosed on BU a few years ago.

    I don’t know Eugene Pilgrim!

  50. @GP

I don’t discredit Carson’s ability in his field, he has shown to be a brilliant surgeon, however ability in one area does not mean one will exhibit that ability in other areas. Nature makes us proficient in one field and deficient in others and Carson has shown he is very much lacking in the political sphere. He used the National Prayer breakfast to try to embarrass Obama with a speech that was better suited for Fox News in the wee hours of the morning. That speech put him on the radar of some Republicans and he decided to run for in the Primaries where he obtained the grand total of zero or nought ( as a cricket man) delegates.

It was Trump who labelled him low energy, but it is his words that trips him up e.g., calling Obama care the worse thing that has happened since Slavery. He is now on record as supporting Trump saying that he has major defects as a candidate but he is supporting him, perhaps he is angling to be on the ticket as VP but he will have to shove Christie out of the way.
