The NUPW posted the message in the newspapers last week inviting members to a meeting to vote on a No Confidence Motion in President Akanni McDowall triggered by the garnering of 50 members who met the criteria. BU will NOT insert itself into the internal squabble of our largest pubic sector union except to share a letter from the First Vice President of NUPW Joy-Ann Inniss to the General Secretary. Note Appendix E which conflicts with assertions made by Akanni McDowall in today’s Sunday Sun.

If what I have said is not the truth, I would have defamed persons so I would be expecting to have court papers served on me very shortly, since what I have written would be defamation if it is untrue. No one has hacked my email and posted that comment. It is me and I challenge you to produce the evidence where I lied. Maybe, you want me to reveal that there were two names that were removed from the list and the names of sons of two senior officers that were substituted.

I must admit that the phenomena of using 3 to four pseudonyms to blog on one site has me fascinated.
The first thing is that you are already blogging anonymously which in the context of Barbados is understandable because you fear the negative fallout.
If for example, you are a DLP MP (and BLP hopeful) you have all received the warning that you will be dealt with severely if you are found to be consorting with the enemy on BU, then that might account for multiple identities.
The second is “ghosting”.
The more ghosts of yourself that you create such gives the impression to the new commer that “many” or that “there are legion” as in the AC consortium who abound on the internet and that they collectively either endorse of don’t endorse a particular stance
Ghosting has a variant called “Equal Opportunity Representations” which speaks to gender representation and race/caste when for example a man may be a Male Chauvinist Pig, but, in order to bring balance to a subject, one posts as a female to represent that stand point. You may even carry on conversations between these two personalities.
The third is that you are planning to touch a very sensitive topic which, particularly in Bulbados, will expose you to defamation, libel, lawsuits, and MPs sending their peoples to lick you down and lock you.
So you are worried about what are the real world consequences and consequently put up the mask.
I.Ps tend to give that away though.
While some will always post commentary that is directed “towards the person” as opposed to against the issue we understand why they perforce need their anonymity.
Fear of incurring repercussions from the powers that be seems to drive our nom de plume practice more than anything else.
One thing that Mr Caswell Franklyn does really well is that he is among the few here that uses his name and for any comment that he makes which speaks to the integrity of any other poster, he backs it up with evidence.

Today, I heard Akanni on Starcom Network news telling an awful lie on Derek Alleyne and I want to set the record straight, not to defend Derek but for the sake of accuracy.
I was employed by NUPW when the lay-offs at the Urban Development Commission occurred. As a matter of fact, I lead the discussion on behalf of the workers. Derek got the job at UDC when the discussions were winding down. He did not take part in the discussions. However, when they could not get me to concede someone from the UDC board called Dennis Clarke and he went to the final meeting behind my back, with my knowledge and signed off on the lay-offs.
The only thing that Derek did was to ensure that the workers, who were going home, got enhanced severance packages that were considerably more than they were entitled to under the law.

Allow me to go way off topic for a brief moment…bear with me.
As a Bajan I tended to use the familiar terms ‘my dear’ rather often…and too ‘sweetheart’ (which by the way the southerners in US also tended to use from what I grasped ).
I spok that way with family females, female friends and even female work colleagues. It was merely a greeting wrapped in the friendly at-ease gab of the day.
As I moved to more senior work positions I had to curb that…for all the obvious reasons. And as I became more of an international traveler it definitely had to stop too.

No updates, but I passed that road this evening and there were a huge number of cars parked inside the compound and on the main road as well. I wonder what the large crowd portends. Seems to me, given the lackadaisical nature of old and mature bajans and the energy and purposefulness of the young crowd that swept akanni to office, that Akanni might win this battle. But who knows?
Looking forward to hearing the news tomorrow.

@David, I have to ask this stupid question. Is 219 member at a NUPW meeting a good result based on the publicity this matter generated, par for course at special meetings or above average?
I expect more of the latter particularly based on the correspondence which spoke of a lack of quorum at one of the meetings to discuss the med plan.
But at the end of the day the subterfuge and dishonesty at the union still needs to be addressed.
It would be great if this energy could be used to move in that direction but obviously that is absolutely not the real intent of all this bassa-bassa.

Prior to this the Dems dominated now the BLP has taken firm control of the NUPW. Only the workers will suffer. In their rush to judgment, they did not even think to have ballots, they tried to stretch out the meeting to frustrate people so that they would leave but they stood to the end and defeated the plotters and schemers. Typical dlp operating system!
My sources told me that the actual members worked their phones, I was not told anything about the BLP.

Out of a reported 8000 members 1000 voted in the last election. Like Observing stated there is great apathy in the country.
If the politicians weren’t involved there might not have been a quorum. This is really a BLP victory. Part of the propaganda being spread by the BLP was that government is planning to rationalise the statutory boards and that they did not want to face Akanni. The big joke is that presidents of NUPW don’t negotiate. It is really a figurehead role.

The strategy by Macdowall was clear – Cry politics and that way you brand serious and legitimate questions about your leadership as politically motivated. You therefore line up all the anti government people on your side and deflect from the substantive questions on the table and get the full backing of the party machinery to do your spin.
Hence we had about 7 Mia Mottley styled radio ads by Macdowall during Brass Tacks all this week ($600 per ad), attacks on Derek Alleyne followed by opposition MP Dwight Sutherland leading the morning news on VOB calling the motion politically motivated and of course a letter to the editor by one of someone writing under a particular name repeating the politically motivated spin.
The public relations response to the motion was strong.
Mr. Macdowall led an obvious Mottley backed spin campaign. Mottley could not afford to lose him now as he is an important puppet in her own PR campaign.It is clear that the NUPW with members of the executive openly trying to run as BLP candidates and a president in the pocket of their political leader is clearly putting a political agenda first while disguising it as vigorous worker representation. It is really Macdowall playing the politics here.

Walter ignored the rules aided and abetted by an incompetent general secretary. The operating environment for Akanni is the same so he will continue to embarrass the union. I well remember when Nigel Harper was president that Goddard was forced to write the Government to point out that there was no need for Harper to be at the union and away from work so often.

I could not have said it better. Akanni and the BLP won but the workers suffered a great loss. I don’t know why the hell these self serving politicians won’t keep their hands off the unions. Expect to see more union protest like the one at the Airport where the union went on strike in the first instance.

I don’t know what this hullabaloo is about. Let’s get down to Brass Tacks and be honest about leaders of all Union leaders who were connected to various Political Parties.
Sir Roy, Morris, Derek Alleyne. Goddard, Walter Maloney, Clarke, Ronald Jones, Karen Best and others who led these Unions and pretend to be neutral. So why pressure youthful leaders in McDowall from the NUPW and Toni Moore from pushing Unionism.
Although I must say that McDowall find himself jumping into matters that is the General Secretary responsibility, probably due to the laid back way being portrait by the incumbent GS. Barbados workers are under siege by employers, especially Government who are trying to deal with reduction in spending to reduce fiscal balances and forgetting that workers are people too.
Instead, the money that can be saved should be the wastage of funds by Statutory Boards and certain Ministries who uses Government funds like an ATM and refuse to have documentation to show.
I said it already and I am going to say it again. Oldie Goldie past Union Leaders like Trotman, Maloney, Alleyne, Clarke, Jones et al must step aside and let the people (Young Turks) get an opportunity to manage the various Unions without inside interference by political yardfowls – Bees or Dees.
I will follow the outcome of Comrade McDowall, Comrade Moore and Comrade Shepherd who are trying to fight for workers against strong opposition of political figureheads.
Caswell, I forget to mention that you are also part of the oldie goldie brigade suppressing these young leaders. Things change and even Governments are abusing the rule of law regarding Unionism.

You might not feel that you are suppressing Akanni, but your language of him being incompetent, along with a past alleged injustice regarding appointment in the public service which cannot be blamed on Akanni that is probably why your action might not be visible to you. Being a Union Member and moving on to a Government Member behaviour is totally different – Good example (Jones; Goddard; Alleyne etc.)

It not my fault that Akanni is chewing on more than he can bite off. Like the present administration, he had the ability to win an election, and like them, he does not have a clue. It is not only that he is incompetent, he is unable or unwilling to learn and feels that the rules don’t apply to him.
An example of his stupidity was revealed by the debacle that played out yesterday. He stumbled into ongoing, wholesale stealing of Medicare funds. The crooks encouraged people to bring a motion of no-confidence to distract him from pursuing that matter. The allegations against him, except for the one about Sagicor, were not new. He did not recognise or understand what was going on around him and because some of the crooks were his former DLP colleagues, he jumped to the conclusion that the matter against him was political.
As a result, the crooks were able to get rid of the incriminating evidence and the union would continue to be plundered.
They was never any talk about a no-confidence motion when he was behaving like a petulant child while acting in his capacity as president. That only came when he sought to act in the interest of the members for the first time but he was outfoxed.
