How are you?

I read what the dailies reported in Parliament recently about the conditions existing in Barbados. According to media reports, while speaking on a resolution aimed at raising the profile of the anniversary date of the 1937 disturbances in the House of Assembly, you intimated that the conditions existing in 1937 are still present.

The newspaper reported that the Opposition MP stressed “while a majority of the population believed that the country had made progress since the social uprising, poor social and working conditions of the labour class, inequality in society and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, meant that conditions were favorable for fresh upheavals”.

I truly believe that your posture in debates are somewhat tainted when we can see the ideas of others germinating in your utterances. The reason I have penned this note to you revolves around your apparent shadowing of the leader. It is as if you are being groomed to take over from Cynthia, as the guardian of the gates. I really feel sad about your current political posture because I actually think you are brighter than Mia. If you just paused and took a cue from Lynette or Maria you would acknowledge a sense of independent intellect. However, your intellect seems absorbed in your quest to defend the indefensible. There is nothing wrong with supporting the leader, but surely by now you have recorded the fate of those that have gone before you.

The space which occupies your political geography is littered with your political colleagues demonstrating independence of thought. You have among your team members who are willing to allow the courts to settle internal political spats from all reports over the same indefensible. You have aspiring leaders. You have Owen loyalist and of course the Male Club from the East.

You see, the point I am making is of great importance. Look, I want to suggest that you should have a chat with Kerrie who was once a shadow of a former leader but has taken a lead in his own right. Kerrie is his own man and taking his own positions. There are so many examples which form part of your party’s history.

I raised the above to context the importance of independence of thought.  You possess greater intellect than the person that you show so much devoted loyalty, yet you seem to have surrendered your sovereignty of intellect by seeking to indulge the politics of Miaology. This country de serves a responsible opposition and as a young Member of Parliament you have that ability to deliver fresh ideas, if you would only step up.

However, I am hoping what was said recently, was not a true reflection of a member of Parliament who represents a constituency, in which there are areas with a profile of which you spoke…conditions favorable for fresh upheaval…

You exist in a space where there is upheaval among and between the opposition members. It appears from looking on, that you have three opposition leaders while nursing at least four factions within the small space.

You were at the meeting where she accused the Government of defaulting on a loan payment. I knew you believed her then as did a number of people. I know you recognized how damaging it was to the reputation of Barbados. I know that you were equally in shock when the Ministerial Statement was read and all of Barbados was alerted that is was indeed an untruth. Do you now understand why I am concerned for you?

All of the above present an opportunity to shine as the future. I implore you to raise the bar and engage in real political intellect and not submerge yourself in a future relationship which is defined by attempts to create narratives that could one day banish you to the backwater of Barbadian politics. Santia .. in closing I do care.

PS I have enclosed my contact details.

Loving Admirer,

This article proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the DLP continues to show Barbadians that they are inept and incompetent and are in capable of governing this country……..but for sure, the only thing they ever do right is play politics as a blood sport!

By the way, we thought that Santia’s presentation was excellent. You dems are feeding on the fatted calf, You have become so fat and lazy that you cannot walk around to see the suffering Barbadians are experiencing. You have closed your eyes to the plight of poor Barbadians.

    Santia was on point!

Well, Violet Beckles was alive in 1937 She told of how she near was killed in the mess, She warned and we agree that the people of Barbados will behave again in the same manner , When they learn of the Masssive Land Fraud and PONZI pulled off by the BLP and covered up by the DLP, right now in 2015,

With the News of 8 Billion paid out by Shell, to the DLP government ad still want to send people home to hide the money for self , wait and see new elections before 2018.

  3. Alvin Cummins July 25, 2015 at 8:09 AM #

    I agree with Douglas.
You have absolutely no idea what conditions were like in 1937. You do not even know what conditions were like in Jordans Lane and Jessamy Alley; I’ll bet you do not even know where those places were. They were right where Clement Payne’s Bust is placed. That area was a “bustling Ghetto, almost like Rockers Alley (Do you know what “Rockers alley was like? Where it was? Do you know what it was like to live anywhere on plantation tenantries, what it was like to work in the cane fields, what it was like to have NO EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, No food? Do you know what it was like to not be able to find work of any kind? Ask your father about people with “white mouth: a condition where persons had white corners to their mouths; because of a lack of calcium in their diet; they could not even afford milk or cheese.Do you know what it was like to go to school bare footed? Do you know what it was like to have no welfare system? I could go on and on; I am old enough. I remember the morning of the riots peeping through the jalousies of the little home in Wellington Street, and seeing the crowd of angry men making their way to Golden Square, and later in life reading about the riots. I would recommend you to read my book “The Wind Also Listens”, there is a chapter devoted to Clement Payne and the disturbances of 1937.

Don’t pray for or agitate for something you know nothing about, at the urgings of others who themselves know nothing about these activities and their aftermaths. Don’t make comparisons with unequal things. I would advise you to look within your own constituency; look at the northern side of Haggatt Hall, at the buildings, the types of buildings, their occupants, and their owners. Do you see any pit toilets anywhere? Look across the street from your office and tell me what you see? Is there any possibility of comparison with the conditions of 1937?

Believe me, you don’t want to see or have any disturbance in our island at this time. Talk to your father; talk to me (he knows me)we all; both those who would agitate for an upheaval and those who are seen to be on the other side, only have one country. Those who seek to destroy it do not themselves know what they are agitating for. The consequences, at the end would not be as they expect. Disturbances, riots, upheavals etc. never turn out as the perpetrators hope or expect.

What a load of rubbish … what the fck is “Political intellect” anyway. You are talking about a set of L A W Y E R S (I spell dah slow because there is a very good chance that you can’ read all dah fast) L A W Y E R S, merchant servants that will bring NOTHING new and dynamic by way of change to the present scheme of things. It is a fraternity that thrives in an environment of lethargy and haziness, and for you it is okay to speak of them as relevant candidates to see after the well being of the public’s financing.. What a crock

  5. David July 25, 2015 at 9:12 AM #

What is rubbish is the fact we have people who agree with the propaganda of any of the political parties designed to deflect the people from the issues.

  6. David July 25, 2015 at 9:17 AM #

What is ironic and interesting is there is a conversation taking root in the USA about whether it is time for a third party to give voice to a growing population fedup with the entrenched Democrats and Republicans..

Here in Canada we have 3 strong parties and now one of them (NDP) wants to merge with the Liberal party.

  9. David July 25, 2015 at 9:49 AM #

To Baffy’s point, we need to fashion a governance system to hold parties accountable. This is the systemic issue we have to address. If we don’t, we will continue to circle the mulberry bush.

  10. HAMILTON A HILL July 25, 2015 at 10:02 AM #

All this from within a party that has presented Barbados the scenario of a senior cabinet Minister having to write multiple letters without response mind you, to the chair of that cabinet. Eleven spineless morsels who recognized the vacuum of leadership confronting this country long before their fellow men did are still searching for the testicular fortitude to let their voices be heard, in hopes that political puberty may somehow be detected and you Douglas could muster the nerve to write this shite? There is nothing your lot can do to deflect the glare now focused squarely in your direction. Writing such shite only intensifies public outrage.

The motto anarchist Caswell Franklyn lives by ‘ Chaos in his lifetime’ is coming to fruition. The country hasn’t reached Trinidad’s almost failed status so right thinking citizens must resist Caswell and the fresh, destructive ‘young Turks’ in the unions. These newbies would do well to remember what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  12. David July 25, 2015 at 10:09 AM #

For a political party to peddle this piffle to the electorate is a reflection on the people moreso than the party. It is insulting at a time when the country is mired in a cesspool of issues. Whither the intellectual capacity to mobile the people?

SIgh…..this is from a party whose former “king” conspired with a Leroy to thief(sorry… i mean charged legal services for ) to the tune of $3.3m from a company that had COLLAPSED when other the people that put /(invest) money in the same company, can’t see a cent……sigh…Well i guess they’re all types in the world..those that speak up and fight for a cause and those that are wolves in sheep’s clothing and say anything to win elections. Sigh…sigh…sigh….

When you are playing cards you have to play with the hand you are dealt.

What alternative form of governance do you propose?
Do you propose to tear up the present constitution?
Do you propose to have a “disturbance” and cancel peoples’ rights?
    Do you propose a dictatorship?
Do you propose to remove the rights of others to have different views?
If you, who have other views than those in the majority; or those who back the government, are dissatisfied, but the majority are on the side of the government do you determine that those views be ignored?
    Educate me.
@HANTS I READ THE ARTICLE AND LISTENED TO THE VIDEO. You would have read, on this blog (BU) about Vote Buying. Would you call Harper’s offer of increased Child Allowance, vote buying? His support grew significantly to the point where he was in danger of losing the election, or getting a minority, he has now surged ahead to a commanding lead. I have to get out and campaign for the LIBERALS AGAIN.

  17. David July 25, 2015 at 10:36 AM #

It is clear you are blindly partisan or an illiterate. What does improving governance have to do with political parties directly? All democratic systems of government should have improving governance high on the agenda.

  18. David July 25, 2015 at 10:41 AM #

    @Just Saying

If BU the yardfowl followed true to your description we would have flushed this garbage down the BU trash presented to be published.

  19. Alvin Cummins July 25, 2015 at 10:47 AM #

What do you say about that.? All your frustration will only increase as time passes. As long as we remain a democracy where everyone has the right to contest or not contest for political office. Your frustration; palpable, because your party did not win the election and give YOU the opportunity to run the country, will increase. Remember the words of Johnny Ma boy; he wants a Plantation, to manage or mis-manage. You had the opportunity, and mis-managed it, that’s why the people tossed you out.
When the time comes and we have another election, IF the people want to they will toss out this government. Until the exercise patience and WAIT.

  20. Alvin Cummins July 25, 2015 at 11:02 AM #

What about the TEA PARTY? Did they not present themselves as an alternative/ what happened? Were they not rejected by the majority of the people.?

@Hamilton Hill, Why do you assume that because you and your cohorts have an opinion, or hold a position, that everyone has the same opinion or hold the same position. It is gross presumption to assume that “the people” hold the same position or opinion.Your colleagues might, but the opinion the “people” hold will be reflected in the election results. So if you lose again you will know that they do not agree with you.
This is a “first past the post democracy.

  21. Alvin Cummins July 25, 2015 at 11:10 AM #

    What do you propose specifically?
Remember I am an illiterate.Your opinion.

  22. Hants July 25, 2015 at 11:40 AM #

@ David “we need to fashion a governance system to hold parties accountable.”

In other words you want a system that equitably distributes the fatted calf instead of only to the supporters of the governing party.

A system that will prevent MPs from using their office and power for illegal financial gain even though all Barbados politicians past and present have been honest.

We just want the built in protection in the future.

    Boots (AC);

    You’re not an illiterate.

You’re just a well educated DLP yard fowl immunized against recognizing any facts or arguments that might put your dear DLP in a poor light.

Nothing that David or anyone else could propose could put you straight.

You are much worse than the regulars like ac and douglas who can do no better or are doing a job for their masters or friends and know that they are spreading propaganda.

You are even worse than Mark Fenty (Dompey) who has occasionally expressed thoughts that run slightly counter to DLP spin until the indoctrination inexorably kicks in.

But you always believe the propaganda up front.

  25. de Ingrunt Word July 25, 2015 at 11:45 AM #

Mr Cummings, I was quite impressed with your ‘peeping through the jalousies’ on the morning of the ’37 riots remarks. For a Bajan of that vintage, regardless of political affiliation, I would really expect a more non-biased view.

Or is it that the deep belief in the stallions that emerged and eventually formed the DLP and led the country through those wondrous years of tremendous social improvement means that you can see or hear not a bad word of that party now!

Are-We, well said: “You are much worse than the regulars like ac and douglas who can do no better or are doing a job for their masters or friends and know that they are spreading propaganda.” Very well said.

Mr Cummings gets so intellectually warped that sometimes its impossible to comprehend the absolute mental gymnastics he achieved to reach his positions.

  30. de Ingrunt Word July 25, 2015 at 12:33 PM #

@ Cummings, I am not aware that the Tea Party ever registered as a political party. It’s amusing and annoying to read your remarks about “Did they not present themselves as an alternative” because you obviously know better than that simplistic remark.

@David and Cummings do either of you really see Trump’s campaign as a serious run to the White House? How can he win a national election against Hilary Clinton unless she is accused and indicted for some malfeasance?

A Trump led Third Party pulls votes from the Republicans; why would he do that? Just to prove a point and then be ostracized by the party for the foreseeable future?

He rides this wave for several more months and then is forced to move to the place he really wants to be which is a front room kingmaker. He wants a bully pulpit …

He knows very well that the White House is not a real option.

David, as you know a viable Third Party in the US is absolutely difficult to achieve. Ross Perot was the last person who made a practical effort and that was a very difficult process. I cannot see a path that makes sense for Trump to go that route.

Perot was quite electrifying back then with his charts and homely wisdom as a successful businessman but he excited voters from both parties. According to poll results he actually got equal support from ‘intended’ Democrat and Republican voters.

Trump is almost exclusively tapping into the right wing conservatives. That plays well now but cannot take him to a majority of the national vote.

Donald Trump may be a lot of things but he is not an idiot. His end game cannot be about getting into the White House because he cannot get enough Black, Hispanic or female Republican voters to win.

And he pisses off quite a few Whites too so its hard to see this as anything other than another of his wondrous ‘I Am The Don Watch Me Roar’ reality events. He will spend some of his millions and then make that back and more.

  31. David July 25, 2015 at 12:35 PM #

    @Dee Word

It is early in the campaign, Trump is obviously getting top box support.

  32. Walter Blackman July 25, 2015 at 12:46 PM #

“I know you recognized how damaging it was to the reputation of Barbados.”

Are you referring to the money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud which took place at CLICO? With no effort made, or being made, to bring the wrongdoers to justice?

If I were the leader of the DLP, you would be the last person I would choose to write anything to promote or represent the party’s interests.

  33. ac July 25, 2015 at 2:44 PM #

So may I ask what are the objectives.obviously the 1937 riots had an objective pertaining to social justice hinging on laws discriminately affecting the majority
MartinLuther King and Mandella had objectives relevant and with similar goals in mind as the 1937
Based upon a thrust of discontent one cannot argue against the need for change and methods used to fight for social justice in 1937
The pressures which are now presently brought as a catalyst for similar action does not meet the standard or necessary requirements to active an unsettling of this country which with all its faults and failures have made strident and exceptional progressover the years.Change without an objective with clear and relative goals in mind with relevance to those issues that are broad based and reflective of an overwhelming populace having discontent would never be accepted and burns on a dimly lighted candle which sooner or later burns out

A million views on Cahill have been heard after all that has been said it is project that must proceed. It brings substantial foreign investment and jobs to the island. Not only that its a giant step towards a green BIM. Game changers like the Cahill venture have always met stern and irrational resistance in Barbados. Mind you the naysayers disappear when the project comes on stream. Recall if you will the ABC highway. Tom Romeo Adams took the harshest of criticisms for that snaking two lane highway now its a four lane necessity. The Grantley Adams Airport, Bridgetown Port, new Kensington Oval, Sherbourne Center each one met stubborn resistance only to become essential for the productive sectors of the economy. The most crucial game changer that encountered violent widespread push back was the abolition of slavery. Think on these things as the unions stay on course to wreck the economy. Welcome Cahill don’t be deterred.

  35. Prodigal Son July 25, 2015 at 6:56 PM #

The dems have shown Barbadians that they do not have a clue how to govern the country nor manage the economy.

Their yardfowls are so disappointed that they do not know what to do to cover their shame hence the blow job like this post. I notice that they are now targeting Brasstacks. Their focus now is Peter Wickham.

The hit man is a young idiot who does not even know how stupid his contributions are……..he brings up religion first and then goes on to homosexuality. The idiot’s comments are so pathetic. But the larger goal is to put Peter Wickham off with these two topics so that he would not be able to engage the real callers who want to discuss the nasty policies of this moronic government.

I cannot believe that this is where our country has descended.

Oh Douglas since you seem (some what) enlightened…….can you tell use how $42m as payment to the Credit Suisse loan can be acceptable when it should have been $88m?

Also how can your (DLP) cabinet (or is it only 4 members…..the details are very hazy…forgive me) sign of on a memorandum of understanding to build a WTE plant before completing a EIA?????? to a company whose history is foggy (at best) using plasma gasification a technology which use have been proven to be environmentally hazardous in many areas in the world?????? Tell us Douglas….all of Barbados (both Bees and DEMs) are waiting for an answer??!!!??

Also i know of some (former) NCC workers who were frightened about the privatization bruhaha that your (DLP) spun to the country…vote DEM because they heard Fumble trumpet “NOT ONE PERSON WOULD BE GOING HOME” in Jan\Feb 2013 only to be sent home in December that same year???…..what happened between Jan and Dec 2013 Douglas???? those (former) workers…. in fact most of Barbados want to know

Oh i almost forgot..Douglas!!! it was rumoured that the oft touted “successful” bond issue from the CB raised $70m to which $30m when to pay (waaaaaayyyyyy) past due income tax refunds???? the people that bought those bonds are a little concerned ?!!! they want to know how is that a good investment of their money!!!!( well… besides “investing” in the people of Barbados) and will they really see their money in 5 years time??? These same people are hearing the words “Ponzi scheme” more often now……

Also why could Fumble call the discontent by the NUPW “noise” ???? isn’t the Gov’t not part of the social partnership which include these unions or did your gov’t say to hell with the social partnership( probably because it was formed under the Bees stewardship)

Come Douglas….you seem to be full of shit…i mean answers(sorry Freudian slip)…tell us..the people of Barbados need a little consoling……

  37. Prodigal Son July 25, 2015 at 7:06 PM #

It is shameful that four members of this moronic cabinet can commit the taxpayers of this country to such a project and do not want the people to have a say.

They do not care as by the time this project (God forbid) is up and running, they would long be relegated to nobodies again.

So what will become of SBRC when this project is up and running? Will they kick Bizzy to the curve and leave whom ever comes after to repay Bizzy?

    Woe is Barbados!

    Your post is on point!

I could not believe that Barbadians would have fallen for this ponzi scheme crafted by the 70 year old governor of the Central Bank.

I clearly saw through this from up front that it was a money grab to plug a hole for this spendthrift government. After seeing how this government has been operating, how could anyone put their money in their hands. But what was deceitful is that it was only after the people rushed and bought the bonds did the Stinkliar tell Barbadians that they were going use their own money to repay them their income tax. I still have not gotten mine.

The Stinkliar and the governor could not believe their luck that Barbadians would be so gullible to fall for their ponzi scheme.

Someone I know who works in a bank told me that after OSA referred to the bonds as junk bonds, some people came back asking if they could get their money back.

The Stinkliar and the governor could not care less……….when the maturity date for these bonds come………..they would long be gone and the burden would be whomever is the government. That money should have been invested not spent like hot cakes.

But this is what we have posing as a government.

  40. are-we-there-yet July 25, 2015 at 7:56 PM #

Knowing the financial hole that Government is in why would you expect them to do anything else but to attempt to fill a small part of that hole?

    What productive purposes what?

  42. Gabriel July 25, 2015 at 9:16 PM #

I dont think Barbadians are too au courant with the meaning of the Moody and S & P downgrades.People who are rushing to buy government paper ought to be aware that it is very likely that the Government might not be able to repay them when the bond issue reaches maturity. The current ‘Junk’ status means it is 50% likely that you will not be paid at maturity. It could get worse and I think it will.
The problem is aggravated by the likes of the PM and the MoF giving people the impression that Moody’s and S&P’s opinions are not to be taken seriously.People should be able to sue both Stuart and Sinckler personally if they don’t get back their investment in full on the due date. And this man Stuart got the gall to piss on people who invested in Clico Flexible Funds. It tells you Stuart doesn’t understand that all investors are looking for a return and it is a healthy form of wealth accumulation. It should be encouraged. The big problem with this administration is that nobody has confidence in any of the ministers. Not one.All come across as shameless liars and con artists.I hope the likes of Lowe,Boyce the quisling,Sinckler and Jepter are made to account to a court for their poor judgement which is running investment from Barbados.

  43. ac July 25, 2015 at 9:48 PM #

all wunna blp financial advisers when osa was at the helm and he was spending and borrowing like there was no tomorrow wuuna had no problem but now the people of barbados buy the bonds wunna get up here spreading lies and untruth about the bonds wunna need to go get a fking life

  44. Prodigal Son July 25, 2015 at 11:16 PM #

At least when OSA was borrowing every Barbadian could see where the money was going, on what it was being spent and a lot was held as foreign reserves.

Now every few months, you indifferent lot …………..(the PM, the Stinkliar and the governor are to be held to account)…………… are borrowing money from only those who would lend you all now at exorbitant rates and not a man can see what the money is being spent on or what you idiots are doing with the millions borrowed.

Show the public where these millions are going!

What goat you are, ac. As soon as something is said about your worthless DLP, you take it personally and start to cuss. You need to grow up!

  45. Prodigal Son July 25, 2015 at 11:28 PM #

But wait, ac, exactly who is it that is spreading lies about the junk bonds you morons trick the people into buying?

The slimy operator known as the governor of the Central Bank freed up restrictions on the banks of which they took advantage has allowed them to pay a minimum interest rate on savings. That was a ploy and very soon after, this wicked government floated these bonds and the gullible Barbadians took the bait. Obviously everyone is looking for a return on their hard earned cash.Barbadians seem to have forgotten the CLICO ponzi scheme which paid a higher than usual interest rate.

It was your minister, the Stinkliar who opened his mouth and the story jumped out. He was the one who said that he used the money from the bonds to pay some income tax and bragged in the house……………….”as we speak, the staff of the BRA are stuffing 24,000 envelopes.”

It was the Stinkliar and him alone who for once in his life told people the truth. But he does not have to worry because it will not be his problem to repay the money when it becomes due………….he would long be removed from the political landscape of Barbados!

  46. Alvin Cummins July 26, 2015 at 2:10 AM #

    @ David,

You did not newer my question. Not that I expedited you to. I was just testing you.
    Wrong. A Plasma gasification
wte plant accepts everything. The purpose of SBRC is to separate the materials and compostable material would be composted and recyclables would be recycled. SBRC was conceptualized to reduce what would go in the landfill, but not significantly reduce that amount. Things like construction materials etc; concrete blocks, cars, refrigerators etc would go to the Plasma gasification plant. Reat my articles again. If you read them

@Guy Fox. it is none of your fking business how i choose to spend my money dare you tell me what i should do with my money, if so what if the govt use of the bonds was in some shape or form to pay off debt so what the hell was wrong with that, you blp morons do not have any solutions but at every turn have a mouth full of criticism to unleashed and nothing of substance too offer,

Hear the Ugly Man(I don’t mean Grynner).”The Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chris Sinckler,is eminent for me”.Now, Mr Ugly Man,that is all well and good if you and he were in a partnership, but you are not.You depend upon people especially the investing class to buy into your proposals.Sadly only mafia type investors like Cahill,Maloney, are the investors you attract. There is zilch confidence in you,Ugly Man and in Chris Sinckler.Add to that the quisling, dishonest fellow Boyce. You AC speak of OSA.Maybe you can ask Virgin Atlantic why they started to fly into Barbados, and why British Airways flew daily into Barbados PLUS 2 CONCORDES A WEEK.A female CEO and entrepreneur was so impressed with the Barbados product, that she chartered a Concord to Bim with her staff as a reward for their good workThere was tremendous confidence in the country Barbados.Tony Blair was seen regularly enjoying Barbados.Bill Clinton enjoyed Barbados. We were operating on such powerful cylinders that the owners of Sandy Lane push down a 5 star hotel and built a brand new one to replace it.Compare that to what obtains now.No Four Seasons up to now.No Beachlands in Vauxhall,St James up to now.Cow messing round with the former Cheffette site in Holetown but nothing being built there.Sandals rob Barbados blind with all and every tax concession they could wring out of the eminent Minister of Finance.I pause for breath.Barbados gone to de dawgs and their current handlers the DLP.
