The 2024 Men’s T20 world cup will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States from the 1 to 29 June 2024. The last time West Indies hosted a similar event in 2007 millions were spent by regional cricket playing countries to prepare stadia and other physical infrastructure – Barbadians were also encouraged to add to room stock and just like that Airbnb was born. The 2007 event was sold on an amorphous revenue item in the business case labelled ‘legacy’. Fifteen years later in the words of a BU family member, ‘are we there yet’? The man in charge then – Barney Lynch – has been recruited for the role now, hopefully he oversees a more positive result this time around with his learnings.

Although preparation is well on the way to prep for T20 next month the spend does not appear to be as significant compared to 2007. There is BBD5 million allocated to Oistins Bay Gardens to power wash grime build up, BBD30 million allocated to mill and pave project to improve some key roads in the network. There is that USD25 million borrowed from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to upgrade and maintain Kensington Oval. Inevitably government’s spending to prepare has become political but this is par for the course in the times we now live.

The blogmaster is not against Barbados pulling out the stops to make this international event a success. The global spotlight will be on tiny Barbados next month and there is nothing wrong with spreading some marl on the outside and replacing worn underwear given the one off potential economic benefits to a suffering economy.

  2. “Canadian school to host road tennis event
Tommy Douglas will become the first secondary school in the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) to be exposed to road tennis.
In a collaborative effort with Gantlet Road Tennis Inc., which is headed by Barbadian Ron Kellman, the Canadian school is set to host a health and physical education pilot program on Friday.
During the event, students, teachers and staff will be provided with an opportunity to “learn about the sport of road tennis, originating from Barbados.”
There are 33 secondary schools in the YRDSB, with approximately 44, 000 students.
“As part of the pilot, students will receive instructions on how to play the game as well as learn about the cultural significance of road tennis in Barbados and its story of resistance,” the school’s board said in a release.
The initiative is, “to support the Board’s ongoing work to create identity affirming health and physical education opportunities for students.”
Kellman, the chief executive officer of Gauntlet Road Tennis Inc, said the event provided another opportunity to showcase Barbados’ indigenous sport to the world.
“This is another significant step in our quest to have road tennis exposed in every elementary and high school in Ontario.
“The world’s largest road tennis rackets, seven-feet tall each, will also be on display on the day,” Kellman said.
“In addition to the on-court experiences, the YRDSB also schedules classroom time for us to share current facts about Barbados, along with the history of the game. A young demographic across the province is learning about our island, in school as part of the curriculum.”
The road tennis pilots served off in the YRDSB in February, in some of their 180 elementary schools and over 86, 000 students. (PR/RB)”

  3. Hope all and sundry are paying attention to the daily weather reporting of the high heat index which no doubt does not bring any form of comfort to visitors or players during the T20 world Cup
WIth all that is going on and the possibility of terrorist threats as being reported via news outlets
A Terrifying attack on the lives of locals and visitors because of the extreme heat should not be overlooked
Most noticeable barbados have only one hospital that has already proven that the system cannot handled overload of patience car in times of crisis

  4. China influence in Barbados would no doubt increase Barbados debt by 78 million

  5. https://starcomnetwork.net/blog/2024/05/15/bdos-china-sign-agrement-for-76m-stadium/

Thinking that China would grant a gift of 78million to Barbados to build a stadium is ludicrous
A ten thousand seat stadium cost runs in the billions if properly designed and constructed to deal with all aspects of nature’s intrusion
However a thinking most likely to happen would be that a partial amount of financing would be gifted to govt while govt finance the bulk with a signed China agreement

  6. Also a PM who boasted about accessing low interest knowing that the full story wasn’t told
Now once again blowing smoke in people’s faces about grants
The Chinese govt not stupid they understand how money can make the jac.ass in politics fly
More often than not transparency and accountability doesn’t matter to this govt

  7. AC
what exactly do you know with proof of evidence to back up your wild accusations
there is a cybercrime law being passed with your name on it to break it in as the very first case for multiple counts of spurious vexatious allegations charges

  8. @ac

Your spurious comment about a 10,000 seat stadium costing billions is not worthy of a reply.

  9. May be research done on the constuction of stadiums and cost is wrong

  10. Cannot belive to the thought of mind blowing would belive that China would gift barbados a 78million dollar stadium
Would bet that when the truth of this story is unfold that the PM gonna back track with an interpretation of the media got the story wrong

  12. SUPER READY!

Lynch: Kensington good to go for next stage of World Cup

    By Mike King mikeking@nationews.com

Organisational improvements will be made at every turn in and around

Kensington Oval for the critical Super Eights segment of the T20 Cricket World Cup.

National Organising Committee (NOC) chairman Noel Lynch says there will be some amendments to the park and ride system, and the relocation of some vendors operating outside of Kensington Oval, who were complaining of modest sales.

Lynch told Weekend Sport that talks involving several stakeholders who met at Hilton Barbados on Tuesday for a postmortem had gone well, noting that Barbados was more than ready to host next week’s Super Eights.

The former Cabinet minister was quick to defend the pitches at Kensington Oval.

    Oval runs

“I just want to remind people that the only total in excess of 200 was made at Kensington Oval by Australia against England. As a matter of fact, 365 runs were scored in that match in the space of three hours.

“In another match at Kensington Oval, Scotland scored more than 100 runs in ten overs. If there was no rain, they might have made 200. The square is good, the pitch is good,” he said.

Lynch also said there were issues in relation to an area on the outfield.

“The cultural presentation was done on a certain part of the field, on the south-eastern side, and some patches started to emerge. More irrigation was required in that particular part of the field and the fact that rehearsals with dozens of people on the field went on there resulted in some wear. We have rectified that.

“Getting in and out of Kensington Oval received good marks – nine out of ten – what we did in terms of security coming through. We got 13 000 people in and out of Kensington in a safe and security environment and much credit has to be given to the Barbados Police Service and the volunteers. There were no incidents at Kensington during that period,” he said.

In relation to the park and ride system, Lynch made it clear that the price was $10 each way.

“Initially, what went out was that it was going to be $10 round trip. It is really $10 each way; you get dropped off and picked up in the same way. We are not only using Transport Board buses, we have supplemented that with private vehicle operators.

“I don’t think it is too much to ask a man, who has bought a car for $70 000 or as much as $100 000, to pay $20 to ensure that his car is protected. We have put in lighting, security. I don’t think $20 is too much to ask,’’ he said.

Lynch said that Tuesday’s meeting had achieved all of its objectives.

“The NOC along with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) met and we were able to work our way through, and analyse what went on in the first five matches at Kensington and determine how we will proceed for the Super Eights and the final.

    ‘Well renovated’

“We went through every aspect of the event, the cricketing component and then we touched on how the entities of the NOC functioned. First and foremost, the stadium has been renovated well. Like anything else, there were a couple of snags. We had to ensure toilets were well kept.

Those things were done – we got full marks for the cleanliness of the place,” he added.

Lynch said that vendors operating outside of Kensington Oval should have a boost in sales with bumper crowds expecting for the Super Eights and the final.

“During the Australia/England match, vendors were more satisfied than in the earlier matches because there was a lot more traffic flow. We are relocating some of the vendors on the side of Kensington Oval, for them to have a better chance of making a dollar.”
