The FIFA corruption scandal has confirmed the nature of humankind and our ever present  fallibility. The  epicentre of the investigation struck close to home with key decision makers in CONCACAF  – including former Vice President Jack Warner[…] indicted by the FBI. Warner  […] given notice he is prepared to squeal, a decision which gives an appreciation of the wrongdoing individuals are prepared to guard for reasons of greed and spiritual wickedness. As the FIFA saga unfolds Barbadians wonder if local officials will be mentioned. The unfolding scandal caused BU to reflect on the meaning of legacy.  There is a type of legacy defined by money and there is a legacy defined by respect. The BU household, by our living, will want our legacy to be one where we are remembered with love and respect. This is something all the money in world CANNOT buy. The late prime minister David Thompson encouraged former President of the Barbados Football Association (BFA) to not relinquish the post although he was a sitting Cabinet member. One is left the question why, it appeared to be a nobrainer, if not a conflict of interest, certainly a distraction from the more important responsibility of minister of education and human resource development. Allegations continue to fly about FIFA dollars used to finance the general election campaign of  Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner was chairman and co-leader of the United Nation Congress Party (UNC).

Back to the late David Thompson: What legacy has he left for his children? There is sufficient information in the public domain to support the conclusion David Thompson colluded, manipulated, and masterminded the swindling of CLICO policyholder’s funds. This is difficult for BU to admit because we held high hope for the Thompson led government on the 15 January 2008. Why should Mara Thompson and company be able to spend monies siphoned from CLICO companies. The time has come for Mara Thompson to be asked some very hard question.  Although she was named recently in a court filing by the CLICO judicial manager greater pressure from the citizenry must be brought to bear by highlighting one of the greatest injustices perpetrated on thousands of Barbadians.

Many, including BU, have started to question the length of time this government has taken to provide remedy to CLICO policyholders after five years of dillydallying. It must be purpose work!

  1. AC, girl you should be up because you’re obviously needed to defend the legacy of one of Barbados great and beloved prime ministers. I often say this about President Obama and I do believe that the same holds true for the late David Thompson. History will undoubtely be the final-arbiter in determining Thompson’s legacy. Distort and besmear as you see fit, but the essence of time will obviously set the record straight, I do believe. I am not privy to any of the facts surrounding the late prime minister’s dealings, but my conscience wouldn’t allow me to seek respite neither repose, if I thought for one moment that I had spewed and parroted an untruth which premanently damages the image of a person whose love one’s holds so dearly.

  2. hI guys and gals, there is going to be plenty good news in the up coming budget,, hope the BLP misfit and antagonist is fully prepared because when good news top the list they cry belly hurt, HA! HA!, but still can.t forget how the Blp doomers were waiting to see the blessed rock go under water, but ac was getting a bit concerned when the Sea weed arrived on our shores, but like a good patriot did my part in addressing the issue to my friends and well wishers who were planning to visit home base

Oh OH this one takes the cake saw some person taking up the seaweed in a wheel barrow then throwing it back in the sea, such wickedness, but i will not attached blame. HA! ! HA!HA! this last one not funny ! not funny at all. some terrorist activity that needs to be hauled off to dodds,in a wheel barrow

  3. the same shit the blp rabble rousers talk about David they said about Barrow,,all the same adjectives some heard of and some made up, never mind now that all of a sudden Barrow is their hero, such hypocrisy is the vehicle by which they use to transport their message, in time the same David Thompson would be resurrected just like barrow as their knight in shining armour,
As things stand Now the BLP is flying by the seat/s of their pant/s no issues left to drag around the town, the marches and marchers are at a stand still,
The govt is way ahead of their every move and snobs the BLP indifference of Doom and Gloom with utter disdain and the only thing left on the BLP plate to drag around are the dry bones of David skeleton, to them ac says Bon-appetite

  4. I have noticed that there is a pervasive-tendency amongst some people in Barbados, who are of the erroneous-assumption that their can get on social-media and write whatever their wish about others- without suffering the consequences of their destructive behaviour, even if it entails legal-recourse from the intending victim. This trend will ultimately come to a squelching-halt -when enough people reputation are damage, and their had had enough of the disregard.

  5. Why is Barbados not using the seaweed to make into bricks for this building boom AC is expecting instead of throwing it back into the sea Very cutting edge…. Whats the good news stuart retiring? Whoever said nothing is impossible is a liar, your party has been doing it for years.

  6. @Law

And you’re saying that the members of BLP have been pious in their dealings right? There comes a point when idealization ceases to exist and reality sets in like the overcast clouds on the north-west corner of the island brother.

  7. Don’t put words in my mouth, the blp is just as bad… what both of these parties need to do is put barbadians first instead of themselves. smoke and mirrors is no way to run a country

    David

I think that it is fair to ask the Hon. Ronald Jones if he is in anyway connected to Jack Warner. I think that he owes it to country to say that I did not take any of that money; it was offered but because I am an honest Bajan politician and would never seek to get something that I did not work for; or whatever the true position.

I think that it would be hard to get David Thompson to account for money that he allegedly stole. And as far as I am aware there is no allegation that Mara took any. So how are we asking her to defend her dead husband’s actions?

Clioc is part of the land fraud and VAT movement ,along with the Banks and Sirs of Barbados, backed up by the Ministers and the judges support by the lawyers on the ground level,All hands are dirty,

The rest of the World Banking and other god lawyers in other countries knows these wrongs and crimes, Barbados Police is in this shit deep covering up for the pimp title holders to mask the crime rate of so-called white status crimes,

After the DLP and BLP are voted out, The the charges will flow from American as in FIFA and as we see in Guyana , The other one show as fallen and Barbados will be next,

Both DLP and BLP are working hand and hand , foot and foot for them to keep this going, These 2 parties are operation as one crime unit, They have to cover each other no matter who wins in the bought elections, We will soon see our own FIFA moment in Barbados, land fraud, bank fraud, laundering , name its it all spells Barbados and the Magna Carta is out the window, 800 years of the Kings laws not even talked about in Barbados , All need to be hanged,

When has any politician ever consider the collective-interest over the self-interest? The concept of put one’s country first sound more like a metaphor which perpetuate in a constant state of infinitude, when spew from the perennial-lips of the political demagogues.

  11. @Caswell

These guys will not squeal until the heat is lit under them a la Jack Warner.

BTW BU notes your Unity Union is getting some serious pickup in the traditional media. Hope Bushie is monitoring. BU social media is with you of course.

Dompey, this is an error on my part so excuse me…

Based on all the evidence in the public domain from competent, independent financial analysts/auditors only a political hack, a person who cannot read or a paid rabble-rouser could shamelessly voice ” I am not privy to any of the facts surrounding the late prime minister’s dealings”.

Your bias is strong and shows your petticoat all twisted in hypocrisy.

Let me see if I can put it another way. I respected, praised and held Thompson in high esteem as a scholar, man of the people and astute politician.

As a secondary school lad myself I followed with pride the man-boy when he verbally deconstructed the attorney and Senator on the CBC program ‘Understanding’. It was his first foray to the Bdos public I believe but he was already well know even then to school seniors who participated or attended the inter-school debating competitions.

After that introduction he dominated political talk as tongues wagged about he being Tom Adams’ son.

The lad went on to win an Exhibition validating his academic prowess and moved on UWI for studies in law; we all looked forward to a rapturous political career.

And now here we are with the facsimile of that cheque for $1.3M.

All that to say Dompey that I considered myself a somewhat biased DT fan – for reasons other than politics – but a fan nonetheless.

But unlike you I can step back and read. And thus I have torn up and burnt my membership to the DT fan club.

It is therefore quite galling to read your remarks where you attempt to pass off as an honest appraisal of Thompson’s legacy when in fact it’s nothing more than a putrid and rancid sickness of dishonest refusal to read the evidence.

You can continue your illogical analysis of this sickness that is DT’s dishonesty but like the cancer that took Mr. Thompson tells us, you really should address your problem with a strength of character and honesty as early as possible.

  14. @Dee Word

Why waste time debating g with hardliners who don’t know half of it. David Thompson has done more to injure the good reputation of Barbados than all others who have gone before him. He was a thief and with toss and turn in hell if there is such a place. All of his former colleagues should and will likely suffer a similar fate the longer they keep their mouths closed.

  17. @ David
This is short but masterful piece that strikes at the heart of what currently ails Barbados.
…just rub out the lotta shiite posted by the two jackasses AC and Dompey…

This place has been successful since 1960 for ONE REASON and ONE REASON ONLY…. blessings from on high in ways that few other countries have enjoyed.

What will lead us into the wilderness is the same shiite that caused the biblical israelites – including Moses, to have to wonder for forty years and nights in the desert…

    Lotta shiite…

We need to reflect and to institutionalise righteousness in this country or our ass will be grass…
CLICO, Bribery, Barrack, DEEDS land theft, taxing poor widows – to fund white millionaires, taxing waste haulers while businesses are allowed to import a lotta shiite…..

How can God bless a place that is building such a shiite legacy….?

    We are self-destructing rapidly…

    WRT Caswell
Bushie has passed the appropriate message on to Caswell.
If he chooses instead to go off in his unity boat ..that is his stinking business……
….tek care he don’t end up swallowed by some damn whale or the other… 🙂

That “Nothing is impossible” one is classic…. and true.

  19. So far Barbadians have asked a reasonable question of the Central Bank Governor i.e. explain the Parris deposit of 5 million, SILENCE!

Is the deputy Supervisor of Insurance still on leave coming out of the CLICO mess?

  20. @Bush Tea

It will be left to the vagabonds and doomsayers to make public what the respectable traditional media will not.

“AC, girl you should be up because you’re obviously needed to defend the legacy of one of Barbados great and beloved prime ministers. I often say this about President Obama and I do believe that the same holds true for the late David Thompson.”

I hope you remembered to wipe after writing so much shiite.

What evidence do you have to suggest that Thompson was “one of Barbados great and beloved prime ministers”?

I think you and many of your ilk are often too caught up in “worshiping” politicians and looking for ways to make them out to be the heroes that they certainly are not.

“A person’s LEGACY is defined as how they are remembered; what contributions they made while they were alive. An interconnection across time, with a need for those who have come before them and a responsibility to those who come after them. It gives shape and meaning to the lives of many people; reflects all that they held most near and dear. Timeless parts of themselves are passed on to others leaving hope for the future.”

Based on the above definition, can you mention on BU what positive contributions Thompson made to society when he was alive that shaped the lives of many or gave them hope for the future?

What legacy could he have created for himself after being PM for two years, the latter half of which he was sick?

During political campaigns, politicians “besmear” each other characters and use parliamentary privilege to “spew and parrot untruths which permanently damage the image” and lives of many citizens of Barbados just because they may hold a different view from theirs.

David Thompson was an ordinary human being and not the “god” you are trying to make him out to be. Going through a constituency to talk to constituents and listen to their problems, give them jobs or assistance was what Thompson was being PAID from the “public purse” to do.
By loving and providing for his wife and children, he was performing his moral responsibilities, which this makes him no different than several other Bajan husbands and fathers who perform similar duties.
But for you political lackeys and yard-fowls, these things make him a colossus of a man.

For sure what he will be remembered for SOME of the following:

    • Misleading the public with his IMF secret deal talk;

    • Negotiating the establishment of casino gambling with a Dutch company (check Hansard);

    • Leading the coup to depose Mascoll as opposition leader after he (Mascoll) worked hard to make the DLP regain some relevancy among the populace;

    • Promising to introduce integrity and freedom of speech legislation immediately upon being elected in 2008, and at the time of his death in 2010 (2 years after being elected) it was yet to be done;

    • Going through the length and breadth of Barbados displaying a cheque Owen Arthur received from CLICO and deposited on his personal account, but the CLICO forensic audit revealed Thompson received much more money as a “related party” and CLICO’s lawyer;

    • Saying how corrupt the BLP politicians were and now the DLP is faced with similar allegations of corruption.

    • He and his party members are yet to reveal their assets;

  23. Regarding the legacy discussion, it does not matter Thompson was anointed, it does not matter if he did a few good things in the year he was healthy in office, what has punctured his legacy – and it matter not what the yardfowls and spin doctors say – CLICO has assured his legacy.

  24. David Thompson is and has been a thorn in the backsides of the BLP ever since he outed Owen Arthur as a schickster , this bone remains stuck in their craws of the BLP and will be forever, if by happen stance there was No Cloco, these everyday back yard mongrels would be accusing David of any and every thing and would bring so called evedience as proof, it is so amusing that now being caught in the cross hairs of a robust economy and the confidence which has been shown towards this govt by the rapid sale of the bonds that this BLP article would resurface neatly wrapped with Jack warren poop and associated with a dead man., H! HA! HA! i am going to laff this one off.HA! HA! HA!

  25. This is certain proof that ignorance is boundless.

The CLICO forensic audit “is and has been a thorn in the backsides of the DLP ever since (it) outed David Thompson as a schickster , this bone remains stuck in their craws of the DLP and will be forever…..”

    Thanks for the heads-up.

    A topic that warrants discussion.

Why is this showering of free trips, goods, money and other largesse on Barbados (and other small countries) politician and government employees by the Chinese government different from Jack Warner handing out gifts (brown envelopes with $40,000.00 in them) as tokens of appreciation for voting for candidate for President of FIFA.

Thankfully, unlike the CLICO investment the Central Bank bonds are gilt-edged solid and WILL be redeemed at time of maturity regardless of party in power.

Such an investment is a sensible and practical decision to get an excellent interest rate on as sure an investment as is possible in the world of finance.

That’s the wonderful thing about Government issued debt…they are generally very well subscribed in a stable democracy.

So this quick take-up of the offer has absolutely nothing to do with “the confidence which has been shown towards this govt by the rapid sale of the bonds”.

It’s about confidence that the STABLE SYSTEM of governance will honour the investment NOT about a trust (or lack thereof really) of the current government.

Only a political duffus would issue such a weak palaver to a discerning audience.

B’dos governments come and go but Central Bank bonds are paid…not so!

But we are all about free speech so let’s hear more of your financial clarity.

  30. @Dee Word

The ability to honor government debt is guaranteed by a stable economy. BU has observed a certain erosion in how we do things today. Drawing down on sinking funds and excess deposits Central Bank have traditionally held in the banking system for example. You should keep uppermost in mind there is risk in government bonds as illustrated in other countries whose financial state led to rescheduling of debt and sometimes defaulting.

Bushie (as the debate fellas teach me to say) but wid respect though isn’t your ‘We are for sale …..PERIOD!…Whores ….ALL!” a bit dated and totally rhetorical in a modern world .

Which country including the popularly labelled the ‘great Satan’ US, is not completely steeped in this ‘whorism’ you speak of? Which one?

The Holy Vatican, maybe Nope. The kingdom of the Dalai Lama, then? Surely not. So which one?

Which profession, including the other great Satan lawyers, is not seeking money first and foremost for their services where they effuse with joy to their clients how they are doing their best to satisfy their needs and wants?

Doctors surely? Really. Engineers and builders who ensure the structures are safe, obviously? Not so.

The FTC official who debunked Weekes’ claims, certainly not. The ship captain who bailed on his crew and passengers when the vessel capsized in bad weather, certainly not.

The priests who molested and those in charge of them who allowed them to move from parish to parish to carry on their sick behaviour, certainly not.

Shouldn’t David or Wikileaks and others be inundated with the back-room details of the Bajan malfeasance?

Doesn’t the lack of that info tell us that everyone just wants their pick and willing to go along to get along?

I hear your rant, I accept your rant but beyond the rant where do we go.

So whores yes. All ah we!

And yes we still want our sons and daughters to turn away from this old profession so we strive to give voice to the wrongs…we must keep hope alive.

  32. Confidence in a product extends to the confidence or the believability factor of the seller, of which govt has been afforded by the QUICK sale of the bonds, no matter who the buyers/s are. it is an overwhelming message sent to the govt and the economy which shall reaped windfalls both for the buyers/customer as well as the seller/ govt and the economy.
the blp misfits can twist and spin the goal/s achieved for the govt by the sale of the bonds but cannot change the reality
This is a major change in the political landscape for the govt and the BLP still trying to redefine and in true colors move the goal post forward

  33. This is getting old, honestly.

  34. What is critical here is that over the last 40-50 years Bim has become far more Corrupt RELATIVE to other nations. We are quickly catching up to our neighbours in TT and elsewhere. We have to enact Integrity Legislation and actually monitor and control STRICTLY! Who suffers from this mess—everyone, BUT the masses are hurt more.

  35. D Ingrunt Word Avatar
    D Ingrunt Word

David, point well taken re “rescheduling of debt and sometimes defaulting”.

That never entered my thinking with Barbados as it have never been suggested or even whispered related to our financial metrics and despite the lowering of the credit ratings. I certainly am cognizant of it but for BIM I did not see it as a factor.

For some reason, I always remember when Argentina went financial belly-up back in the 80’s and it has been a lesson to me on high flyers being brought low.

More recently of course some US states have had to file for financial sovereign protection as a result of bad decisions (and not primarily due to the ’08 cave-in), but all in all I didn’t put B’dos in that perspective. But as I said, point taken.

@Money B, I would question that statement “over the last 40-50 years Bim has become far more Corrupt RELATIVE to other nations”.

Put your statement into proper perspective for a moment.

Fifty years back puts us squarely into the hey-day of EW Barrow and the swan-song of Adams…10 years and tracking afterwards is the Barrow and Tom period and then fast forward to now.

All these current fellows (male and female, young and old) would have forged their political apprenticeship directly or indirectly under that old guard and those who took over or were alongside them” Taitt, Miller, St. John, Craig, Caddle, Tudor etc etc. Surely there were men and women of integrity and deep commitment in that lot.

But do you honestly believe that while T&T was devolving to their O’halloran type style of operation and Jamaica their gun culture and Guyana their Afro-Indo tribalism and all of them the deep cronyism and corruption, that here in little Barbados the same Oxford/Cambridge/London School of Econ. trained fellows were operating at a high level of saint-hood and integrity. Fah trute!!

It seems our size maintained our corruption to a level of quiet and comfort (no big money nor lotta death and mayhem) that kept it from the exposure levels of our neighbors. (But remember Alleyne coup threat)

But not unlike the Iraq war, based on what we know now our politicians were as corrupt as those in T&T and everywhere else.

So just as how the justification of Iraq invasion is proven to be a fallacy, talk of Bajan politicians back in the day being more above board than others is similarly fallacious.

We now seeing the stark evidence and corruption laid bare just as we saw the evidence of missing WMD laid bare. Night doth run until…

  36. Pure shiite!!! To suggest that the sale of bonds “is a major change in the political landscape for the govt” is utter nonsense and pure party political rhetorical diatribe. But what else can BU expect from this group of misfits parading on this site as AC.

People buying bonds DOES equate to them having confidence in this DLP administration. It’s the return on investment that is paramount in this situation. Since the Central Bank relinquished its control of determining interest rates, the commercial banks have capitalized on this policy by significantly reducing interest rates on savings to increase their profits.
This paved the way for the Central Bank to offer bonds at attractive interest rates, which would obviously attract individuals who usually purchase bonds, as well as those who are looking for a secure method to receive lucrative returns on their investment.

For years Barbadians have been buying bonds and treasury notes without the fanfare and advertisement spin the DEMS have placed on these purchases.

When the country has a high fiscal deficit and its credit rating has been repeatedly downgraded, governments use this strategy as a means of raising money on the domestic market because of the high interest rates on loans borrowed on the international market would attract.

Confidence in an economy is measured by the amount of FDI the country could attract, especially in an environment where that country has suffered successive downgrades by the regional and international rating agencies, as well as the international financial institutions.

For the past 4 years or so, this administration has been telling Barbadians about a number of projects that are to “come on stream”, and to date we have not seen any of these projects “get off the ground” as yet. What about “Four Season” which Sinckler has been telling us for the past 7 years that investors are interested in this project.
Situations like these are indicative of the fact that INVESTORS, NOT BUYERS OF BONDS, do not have confidence in the Barbadian economy as yet.

No matter how you spin this matter, the reality is you are just grasping at straws in an effort to make the government look good. And you are doing an excellent job of making yourself appear ignorant to financial matter, which is obvious to all and sundry.

  37. @ Dee Word
    OK…
…so let’s say that everyone does it too…
How does that justify our decline since the days of Dipper when we were actually REPATRIATING assets like BET, BL&P, and taking care of our less fortunate?

Perhaps THAT explains why Barbados has been BLESSED beyond the level of practically ANY other nation on earth…. previously….

    @ Artax
    Have to agree with you…
The choice is to buy Government bonds with the good chance of realising 5% …or pay the damn banks rent to keep your money…

    Hobson’s choice…

  38. D Ingrunt wrote—- the deep cronyism and corruption, that here in little Barbados the same Oxford/Cambridge/London School of Econ. trained fellows were operating at a high level of saint-hood and integrity. Fah trute!!–

Well actually to some degree YES! Did Sir Errol/ Cammie adopt the Laskyite supposedly Socialist/ Communist strategies of Burnham and Manley??????????? Therefore, we know they were different in certain very significant ways and have been proven correct in their approach as evidenced by Bim’s superior standard of living for most of the last 40+ years. Conceivably, our leaders might have been farless corrupt and far more focused on improving the lot of the man in the street than those “leaders” in Guyana and Jamaica.

Do I remember Sydney Burnett Alleyne? I was at CBC TV that very night when Tom pre-empted my program to announce that he was on top of the situation.

Were the Americans wrong to conclude that “my enemies enemy is my friend” ie Iraq, and then back Iraq against Iran thereby saving thousands of American lives?

Was Bush wrong in assisting the 62% of Iraqis who are Shia and were dominated for over 40 yrs by the “Butcher of Baghdad” (Sodamninsane) and his 22% Sunni population?

Is it strategically incorrect to encourage the distraction of ISIS and Al-Qadea from Western intensity by permitting the real necessary War between the Sunnis and Shia? Better they fight each other than trouble the West? Surely one of the best methods for weakening Iran is to draw them out of their somewhat secure home hole and have them exposed all over Iraq and elsewhere until the time is right to strike a death blow.

  39. @David of BU “after five years of dillydallying. It must be purpose work!”

    Duh!!!!

Of course it is purpose work.

David have you forgotten thst Leroy Parris is not a leper, but that he d he is Prime Minister’s Freundel Stuart’s friend.

  40. Issues like ‘legacy’ and ‘hope’ are only important once we decide to confide our collective power in individuals.

The legacy of the of ‘de man down de road dey’ is of no importance to us, unless we are members of his immediate family. He dies everyday and few remember him!

However, the investment of such power would have made Thompson a super citizen. And legacy says to us that a super citizen cannot die.

  41. Legacy is a fictitious, artificial construct!

Everybody in Barbados, except AC and her ilk, would like to get the rid of Stuart, but because of this irrational 5 year term there are few options, by this majority, to get the rid of this man and his illegitimate government.

When he finally leaves office, as the elected dictator he is, there will be all kinds of arguments saying how good he was, how he led the country through hardship, he will even receive a knighthood from his co-conspirators – in the BLP.

    What legacy!

  42. HA! HA!HA! PAchama seriously did u say ‘Dictator” wait most of your best friends are dictators like the dead Sadam heusein! Putin! Castro ( well castro until of recent now that he has become a capitalist pig) the other dead guy chavez and a long list of notables that u have loved and respected, guess what maybe after Stuart leaves office as in your words an elected “dictator” you would show the love and respect due , guess in your case better late than never, but as the PM recently state that your bunch have lost the election in 2013 and still fighting to win , HA! HA! HA!,

  43. @ AC

He sounds like a dictator to us, an elected dictator!

Well, if you are so persuaded that we have a deep knowledge about dictators, and we do not hesitate to accept that we have over a long period of time defended ‘the countries’ who those so-called dictators have ‘ruled’ over, then you may want to also accept our informed characterization of your lover boy Stuart as such, no?

  44. @ David,

You asked “What legacy has he left for his children?”

If you were referring to his two biological daughters I would say a “ton of money!” If you were referring to the people – the Barbadian public, I would say a “ton of debt!”
