Stuart pointed out that for all practical purposes, Barbados was already a republic. A Republican form of government stipulates that those run the people’s affairs should be chosen directly or indirectly by the people themselves. We already do that. Under republicanism, the persons who administer your affairs can serve during your pleasure. In other words, they should only be able to stay as long as you want them to stay Barbados Today

Dear Mr. Prime Minister, please tell me where you will get the money needed to change around everything from the Monarchical system to that of the Republican one?

The Minister of Finance is always complaining about “low cash flow” when it comes to satisfying the needs of the poor, the needy and the vulnerable, and the institutions on which they depend. You come to us now with something which is nothing but another red herring to try to get out of the predicament you are in at present.

You state that there are three reasons why Barbados is “for all purposes already a republic”. However, the criterion for the third is null and void because the Speaker of the House of Assembly has not only been accused of misconduct, but found guilty of so doing. Fingers are still being pointed at him, but he has refused to step down and has this Government’s backing for so doing. Also, if Barbados is already practically a republic, why waste the taxpayers’ money for changing over to one?

The Minister of Finance says that there is still a “low cash flow”, and this will probably continue until the third quarter of next year.

Whence will the money come to change over to the republic system, knowing that it will all cost money? That money would be better being pumped into the QEH! We may need a republic, but not under such circumstances where it seems that you are only doing it for your own self-aggrandisement!

  1. Mr Stuart forgot one factor that has already qualified us as a republic, like many of those in South America,Africa ,Central America, and the greatest republic of them all, the US of A, where policemen are able to shoot down citizens willy nilly, and the authorities pooh shark on one long drawn out investigation.
I’ll risk to bet that the policeman involved is either a member of the DLP or a Lodgeman, or both.

  3. these are the offspring of the older generation supporters of the BLP who gave the rght hon Erroll Barrow a tongue lashing when Barrow profoundly stated that Barbados Independence was inevitable,,now fast forward almost fifty years later and this generation of BLP supporters is talking the same trash with the same cockeyed reasonings , There ought to be a law against political perception and the bastardization of critical thinking a well know flaw the BLP has adopted. because every time these misfits open their mouths the howling sounds of negativity rolls across social media and the media airwaves on just about ever issue don’t you think that after six long years of re thread and boring mantra that people either have gotten used to these recitations or just simply closed their ears,

Mr. Stuart please, Sir, (or do you want me to address you as Sir, the Rt. Hon Freundel Jerome, QC?) don’t make yourself look like an intellectual jackass devoid of a grasp of universal political concepts and practices.

We can say the same thing about Canada, Australia, Jamaica and even the UK.

Wasn’t the USA a republic under slavery and segregation? Wasn’t South Africa a republic under many years of Apartheid? Aren’t the countries that made up the old Soviet bloc republics up to this day? What about Cuba, China and North Korea?

What about the Republic of Zimbabwe and the many other countries on the continents of Africa and Asia that call themselves ‘republics’?
Are the leaders elected fairly and squarely by the people and serve at the pleasure of people?

Get real, Jerome! The real issue is: Is it cheaper and more beneficial to have a republic or leave the existing form of democracy that has served the country well for the last 48 going 49 years even though the Anthem speaks of the Lord guiding the people for the past 300 years during slavery and beyond.

Let your God be the leader and guide of the people instead of some republican dictator or monarchical demi-god. After all, isn’t the God who appointed the Queen the same God to appoint any future King?
Why throw 376 years down the drain when a simple amendment from Her Majesty to His Majesty can do the trick and save you rewriting the preamble to the Constitution?

Oliver Cromwell must be smiling all the way to the Ye Ole Mermaid Tavern with the final intention of throwing Horatio Nelson into the Constitution river, once and for all. Ask Trevor Marshall if you doubt me. He was at the séance.

Freundel is smarter than a lot of people give him credit for. There are many people in this country: who can’t afford to put food on the table for their children: who can’t pay their bills when the become due; who are due termination pay from Government and have not seen a cent of it for as much as one year. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has deteriorated to the point where it is difficult to call it a health care institution. Government has raided the National Insurance Fund to meet short-term needs thereby putting our future pensions in doubt. All of these are more pressing and the PM decided to engage in the politics of distraction to give the populace something to talk about other than what ails them. Worse yet, he has achieved what he set about to do. We can’t be that dumb to be deceived so many times without realising it.

  8. Caswell,

This jackass we have for a PM is not fooling anyone. The people have wised up to the DLP’s tactics. In the Nation, all but one person said the call for a republic was a diversionary tactic, the online comments were all of the same view.

I wonder if he knows that he has to go to the people for such a mandate. We did not vote for that and Barbados is not a dictator, ship that he can impose his will on us. Ugly bastard, he seems to be getting uglier everyday….the more he speaks with such sarcasm and condescension, the uglier he looks! It comes from the inside, Bushie tells us!

This girl likes you bad. This girl thinks you have what it takes to govern this land only if you would find the courage to make the the big step. However,;one thing this girl does not understand is why you think the current Prime Minister is smarter than we think. This id the second time for me that you state he smart and that he is no idiot.

The current Prime Minister has not achieve his objective to distract from the current onslaught he and his administration are faced with on a daily basis. What he has done is show forth how ignorant he is in thinking that people would be distracted. People wisely recognize his and his administration’s inability to manage Barbados and make timely decisions when necessary. The people recognize that the nefarious silence of this Prime Minister was broken when he had to defend his friend Leroy “the money leech” Parris by attacking the people who fall for the Parris Ponzi real estate scheme with he got a list talk. The people are not blind to the corrupt wisdom of this Prime Minister. The people are not blind to his defense of the immoral decision to keep the speaker of the house who is an immoral son of a bitch while showing the whole of Barbados that he the PM accepts immorality and will represnt it with his 31years as a lawyer. The öeople understand this PM well. The only one he fooling are his loyal subjects who have sold their souls to the devil for a few shiny things, a couple of Sir Grantleys, a few washing machines and the clearance of outstanding bills. You really think the people will forget that this corrupt PM saw vote buying, talk about it but turn around and accept it. Smart my ass Caswell all he has done is set up himself for more criticisms. And the criticisms are just in his case particularly the ones about his dictatorship behaviour and the need to cement it with the current going republic shite talk. Where is the smarts in that when all you have achieve is getting people to say: if he cannot manage the country, is the most hated PM in the history of Barbados politics, you think his dictator words of: Barbdos will become republic and disdain he showed towards the Queen with his words will distract. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THIS CUNT TRYING TO STIR-UP SOCIAL UNREST.

  10. “Barbdos will become republic and disdain he showed towards the Queen with his words will distract. ”
I didn’t hear his Republicanism nonsense because I doubt Mr Stuart knows what is or isn’t a Republican form of governance but if indeed he did show disdain for our Sovereign lady in his as usual disdainful ‘playing to the gallery’ comments and expects the comments to go unpunished with laughter then he has another thought coming. Remember Jack Warner’s fairy tale world in which he lived for many a year without ne’er a hindrance only came tumbling down after he doubl-crossed to his own demise the unforgiving British after promising them his vote.

  16. actually i do not see this as a B or D issue but an issue that dictates the necessity for fairness given that a person /persons collectively has a right to seek recourse for compensation for work done whether they be a joiner a welder or a teacher, it is not good enough to expect services rendered and an unwillingness by those receiving not to be equally responsible out of fairness to compensate on a scale that is measurable and justifiable with in the parameters of duty bound
the bstu has laid out a reasonable case on which they have stated that a job when delivered must be compensated and any rationale thinking person would be hard pressed not to agree ,, as stated in their complain for over the years they have had excessive workload and their cries for compensation has been received with muted ears.
The harm being done from the fallout of this stalemate should not solely be placed at those seeking compensation but at those who have closed their eyes and ears to fairness and responsibility,

  18. As the next step towards Barbados becoming greater independent – politically constitutionally – of colonial rule, it is logical for Barbados to become a republic, and to move away from this foolishness called constitutional monarchy.

However, it shall become totally disgusting and repugnant for either the Damned DLP or Blasted BLP to primarily take the country in that direction, fundamentally because neither of them has a vision, a blue print of the type and form of republic that is really needed and that is really relevant to the fundamental social political material financial needs of this country at this stage in its history of existence.

The type of republic that Barbados must have is a People’s Republic of Barbados, in which the major people forming the major arms of government – being the people at the helm of the executive, the legislature and the judiciary – will have to be all elected by registered voters who will have voted for them on fixed election days, and using various voting methods for their election as between them, and ultimately for them to take up their respective public offices; where all those holders of such public offices will be totally accountable to the people of this country; and where all those elected public office holders will be subject to being recalled by a predetermined number of voters voting to do so at a designated time at designated places.

In each instance of such people carrying such titles of Cabinet secretaries, legislators, judges, respectively, and performing their respective roles and functions, they shall be granted sovereignty and legitimacy to do so on the basis of the majorities of such voters voting for them.

The stupid DLP and the foolish BLP must go or be forced to go by the broad masses and middle classes of people in this country in the forseeable.

  19. Does this talk being floated about a Republic has the support of the Opposition? The government needs their support to swing this right?

  20. It is not only a diversion for Fraudelein but for Mia and the BLP too. We could never understand why people would ever presume that politics is anything less than war, a war against the people. And in war truth is the first victim.

We have a scenario, if recent polls are correct, where MAM is fielding at first slip to have the people of Barbados ‘out caught’. It’s like the frying pan and the fire. We see no measurable differences between the two!

Remember, the BLP, for 14 years also had their fair share of diversions, propaganda, mis-directions. Had not for the objections of Whites in Barbados Owen would have done the same foolishness.

We imagine that the Black lackeys must be lining up to get their knighthoods, QCs, and so on before less desirable ‘honours’ come into ‘bogue’. So for the next 30 years we will have a new manifestation of classism. Those with the real or foreign ‘honours’ and the minions with the local variety.

Is this not animal farm? LOL

  25. I am still ‘young’ but I do remember this Republic talk being pushed by the BLP under Owen Arthur. I believe we were suppose to become a Republic on 1st Jan 2000 and sumthing (cant remember the year). It will be very interesting to hear what Mr Arthur and especially Trevor Prescod have to say about this, as he was one of the leaders of this movement.

  26. Any comments by any citizen of Barbados about this country becoming a republic must never be construed by anyone as distractive. Such comments must however be construed by any reasonable person inside or outside of this country as being a necessary and inevitable part of a very important national discussion on the transitioning from one of the political statuses of our Barbados to another one.

What though must be asked – and given the political constitutional importance of the office of Prime Minister to the political affairs of this country, and the capacity of certain sections of the local media to inform on many things the Prime Minister actually says generally and especially at certain times of national political material financial crises – is why the timing of this national discussion and what are the motives for the Prime Minister et al setting it in motion at this time.

Well, the fact remains that at a time when this country has been going through its seventh successive year of dreadful political economic depression, the question of Barbados becoming a republic continues to be a seriously unresolved settled one, in light of the fact too that during the mid to late 1990s, during a time of the false propogation of the illusion of material financial prosperity in Barbados, there was much national discussion on the subject of republicanism for this country then too.

    PDC

  27. this is the one issue that would catspraddle the Bees as they fight tooth and nail against an idea that they overwhelmingly endorsed under OSA. just remember timing is every thing and the time is now, two thumbs up for PM stuart

  28. The question continues to be: what were the other major national issues in Barbados then when the matter of republicanism was being set in motion by former Prime Minister Mr Arthur et al? The issue of the increasing great amounts of money that so many Barbadians had to give to many merchants business houses when having got the identical number of commodities or the identical number of uses of services as before per transactions in the local domestic retail markets?

The wickedness of the implementation of the dreaded VAT and its different destructive political psychological financial effects?

The issue of the great number of foreigners having been taking greater control over many of our Barbadian land spaces, at a time when so many Barbadians did not have any land spaces here to put homes on, to plants crops, grow vegetables and to rear animals for their own purposes?

The issue of many more of our agricultural lands having been transformed into residential and recreational developments, especially for the uses of the well to do, at a time when many Barbadians were, in some cases importing, and, in many more cases, using so many foreign agricultural and food and beverage items from elsewhere?

    What like hell??

Surely the Damned DLP and Blasted BLP must be totally destroyed by the broad masses and middle classes in the very serious reengineering redevelopment of this country.

It could also be argued that was the BLP’s position under the OSA dispensation.
The same way the DLP has broken it manifesto pledges of “No Layoffs, No Privatization” so too can the BLP move away from any previous proposal of republicanism as a pressing matter for Barbados at this time.

The current BLP can simply argue that it is a matter for the people to decide either by way of a clearly stated manifesto pledge in the next general elections or by way of separate Referendum to let the people vote Yes or No for Republican status.

  32. Some in the PDC would well recall how in the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, the jackass BLP having gone and constructed a monument in supposed commemoration of the first free village in Rock Hall, St. Thomas, whilst at the same time under their period of gross maladministration and misrule more and more foreigners were having greater and greater control over more and more of our land spaces in this Barbados.

What an idiotic inconsistency then and now!!

Ably, put Gabriel. Only a messenger of such high standing and close connection to the God of Truth could announce such a pre-condition for any change to a republican form of governance.
After all A G (Angel Gabriel) the light of Truth lies not in any proposal wrapped in a tissue of lies and distraction coated with the fishy aroma of a red herring but in the very words regurgitated by a dangerously unfocused P M: “ A Republican form of government stipulates that those (who) run the people’s affairs should be chosen directly or indirectly by the people themselves.”

Where is your mandate, Mr. P M, given by the people to take Barbados into republicanism? Where in your Manifesto of Good Governance did you indicate to the people your party’s wish to see Barbados adopt a republican form of governance?

Why not in true republican spirit let the people decide by way of voting the same way you and your cronies from the Monarchical political class do in the HoA?

Barbados did not achieve its ‘Independence’ through the barrel of a gun or regular civil strife and upheaval. Why not carry on that tradition and let the people have their say instead of ramming it down their throats because on their acculturated slavish subservience to imposed colonial authority?

“We know this current management at the Nation BLP newspaper is low on morals but they also have no respect for the standards of journalistic integrity. I am sure the BLP supporters would read this and agree…”

Perhaps you should forget the Nation Newspaper a bit and focus your attention on the current management of the Barbadian economy and society.

“We know for sure this current management of Barbados is low on morals” [check how they handled the Carrington affair; the CLICI forensic report; Byer charging over $800,000 for a $17,000 job without reprimand; Lowe and the embezzled millions; over one year after being retrenched, former NCC workers still awaiting severance payments while Denis Lowe’s constituents remain employed and this DLP administration boosting of having the largest cabinet in the history of Barbados; making sure ALL losing candidates get a pick in the senate or as a diplomat; using the constituency branch meetings to cuss ordinary Barbadians; now Irene has joined Reggie Hunte, Maxine McClean and Jester Ince in the senate to cuss people; Sinckler calling June Fowler a “bald pooch cat”].

“But they also have no respect for the standards of journalistic integrity” (listen to the shiite that comes out of the mouths of John Lovell and Maureen Holder; the political content of CBC DLP TV and GIS programming; the shiite dat Douglas does write [ask Lisa Marshall, the DLP really went to the extreme bottom here with morals]; the Advocate reporting which has an obvious bias towards the DLP).

“I’m sure the DLP supporters would read this and agree.”

The poll results can also substantiate this, since it was DLP supporters who were recorded in the high percentages as being fed up with their party’s attitude.

The current BLP can simply argue that it is a matter for the people to decide either by way of a clearly stated manifesto pledge in the next general elections or by way of separate Referendum to let the people vote Yes or No for Republican status”.

    ………………………………………………………..

    You are so right, miller.

Since OSA said that the BLP lost its soul, this present BLP is not bound to anything he said or did when he led the BLP. Boo hoo!

I quite remember the dead king kicking up a storm when the said OSA raise the idea of Barbados going republic. OSA had the two thirds majority to do this but bowed to the pressure from the thieving lying scum ball to seek a referendum from the people. Some how a question was floated about and the dead swindler and his lying band of scum balls poo poo the question and OSA backed down.

And now the ugly man thinks he can swing this on Barbados and barely has a majority? Talk about tomfoolery!
