When you are working with miniscule marketing budgets, securing sponsorship is absolutely critical to the overall success of most promotions. The secret is to ensure that any sponsor ‘investing’ in a bigger picture project achieves a cost effective return. That cannot be done without a careful evaluation of potential linkages and mutual benefits.

Quoting from a well known business publication, ‘Sponsorship should not be confused with advertising. Advertising is considered a quantitative medium, whereas sponsorship is considered a qualitative medium’. Beneficial partnerships can add tremendous value and credibility, especially if increased sales and market share can be directly measured to the strategic alliance. It also makes it far more likely that the sponsor would be willing to support future ventures.

There are many creative ways that the process can be enhanced. For instance with our current dine-around initiative we persuaded a major distributor to offer a range of wines at a special rate to our restaurants partners, allowing a greater net return for the individual establishments and growing the suppliers market share. Other sponsors have a monthly option of offering one or more of their products at reduced prices.

Another one is a financial institution and by selecting a particular method of payment, the consumer earns extra airline miles or points, while the bank offsets involvement costs with increased merchandising fees. Generally it’s a win-win situation for all participating parties. It is however very important not to even hint of a promise that a collaboration could produce anymore than a realistic return on investment.

Take the bank as an example. Just one hundred people electing to use their branded credit card at one of the 22 dining establishments covers the cost of the sponsorship and that’s an achievable reality during a couple of nights. Therefore if you can cover the actual expense, every other benefit that is generated in the wake, like increased visibility, brand awareness and savings created by higher volume is a bonus, at little or no extra cost. It is no coincidence that some of the most successful companies are frequent sponsors, learning over the years to be selective and discerning.

Until the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., finds its feet and effectively implements new initiatives which will hopefully drive additional long stay arrival numbers, the private sector must step up, if we are to see any short to medium term recovery. 2013 ended with the lowest number of stay over visitors for 11 consecutive years. It must be absolutely apparent by now that the $11 million budgeted to drive an additional 15,000 people to our shores which were estimated to spend $30 million, called the Barbados Island Inclusive promotion simply did not work. Bringing it back this year to all markets, except the UK, as the only major national promotion has produced the same dismal results, at least for the first nine months of the year. What is absolutely vital, is that any future all embracing promotions must be implemented earlier and monitored for performance on a regular basis.

We have had MOUs before, as you know it is not a legally binding document. Look for the BAS accusing the BHTA of importing too much soon or the BHTA complaining about quality. Keep your fingers crossed.

  2. whether the MOU is a legally binding agreemen or not it is a necessary step in the right direction, now it is all up to the players involved to make it work, the agricultural sector would be the biggest losers if they play loose and fancy free in the area of management and distribution of their product especially knowing that the hoteliers will be scrutinizing every aspect of their product and its delivery in a timely manner, the BHTA also would be under heavy scrutiny flimsy excuses are used as an avoidance of the purchasing of local products …the BHTA must also be mindful of the fact that the economy of barbados works not as an singular entity but a plurality one that is dependent for its development on all the sectors involved. it would be most interesting to see in the weeks and months ahead if self interest by the parties involved swallows and devours the economic stability of this little island as it has been doing for many years. there is still much work to be done and which must be accomplished and both sectors working together as partners with the same goals in mind is crucial in order to make this partnership work closing the gap of division fuel in part by selfishness

“.. there is still much work to be done and which must be accomplished and both sectors working together as partners with the same goals in mind is crucial in order to make this partnership work closing the gap of division fuel in part by selfishness”

We can easily deduce that the above post is not from the regular “ac.”
Be that as it may we would wish to ask the regular ac how long has such a reconciliatory attitude as demonstrated above been defining her position on concessions to the hotel sector other than to Sandals.

It can be duly recalled that you the regular ac were from the outset totally against any additional concessions being extended to other players in the hotel sector accusing them of being parasites sucking on the dry teats of the poor taxpayers.

You certainly were NOT one of the few enlightened BU contributors who called from the outset for a level playing field for the sector.
Why should one hotel or group of hotels be awarded tax-free concessions on food and alcoholic beverages while the other players who have been in the industry for sometime (especially during the period when they were asked not to layoff staff) have to put up with such unfair competition.

Only jackasses like the yard-fowls of the ac breed would argue against the principle of equity and fair competition.
By granting such a sweetheart deal to Sandals the present administration in the first instance had no leg to stand on by denying the other players in the sector similar concessions. Even Butch Stewart saw it as wrong and unfair.

Your hypocrisy and volte-face partisan weathercock positions have no bounds.
The question to you, though, ac & Co is how such a significant loss in tax revenues would be recouped if the fiscal deficit is to be narrowed and the targets agreed with the IMF are to be achieved within the 19 month timeframe.

  4. Bear in mind the Barbados Poultry Producers were up in arms recently when the government approved a license for Lucky Horse Shoe to import thousands of dollars in chicken wings. The Poultry Association is a member of the BAS delegation across the table from the BHTA. We wish them well.

  5. Look silly boy at the end of the day it is about bridging gaps shaking off the dust left on the feet from political landmines, digging oneself out of political trenches, putting differences aside and putting the best interest of the country first, it is not when one arrived or how one arrived but what has been accomplished at arrival.
mr, miller the answer to your last question can be found in the final sentence of my comment,, “it is not when one arrived…………………………………., good nite sir,

To the specific ac who wrote the above magniloquent comment:

    ¡Arriba el telón!

Poor OSA must be relieved at the magnanimous position you have finally “arrived” at.

Could I, Sir or Madam, suggest to you a similar heartfelt portion of magnanimity be extended to Mia, Mascoll and even your tourism nemesis Adrian Loveridge?
