Name of the person withheld – Barbados Underground

John Boyce, Minister of Health
John Boyce, Minister of Health

I am writing about the upsetting fact about an issue that occurs at the geriatric hospital which involves the salary of staff. I know for years it has been going on but in this day and age sometimes within a year we are paid only twice. I have known persons who had to resign because a whole year they were not paid. Management will say they have sent down your paperwork but when it arrives at Personnel Administration it disappears. Then Ministry of Health says they have no paperwork there for you even after it leaves personnel dept.

Someone has to be held accountable, we have bills to pay, kids to feed and groceries to buy. We are already short-staffed and sometimes have to work overtime for a free day which is seldom given to us. The authorities need to address this issue. Then when we do get pay, we only get one month’s salary and not the 6 months we were waiting for. Then on top of it all, management has a building that they renovated and the staff have nowhere to eat lunch, especially when it rains we have to eat standing or in the veranda.

I understand there was retrenchment but to send 80 percent of the porters home and only 6 porters left to lift heavy patients in bed is not good enough. Sometimes for the day there are none and nurses have to lift them in bed. When the few that are working go on sick leave from being burned out, overworked and drained who will take care of our elderly ? We have spoken to our respective unions and to management but enough is enough.

  1. The latest group of retrenched workers to raise a cry for money owed comes from former NCC workers.

Now more formaly -Interesting that in a group full of leaders, the questions suggested then posed with why they suppose leaders avoid conflicts and results. The right answer is we don’t. At least not good leaders. Now there may be some leaders who have other people that are in a better position to address conflict, but a good/great leader will not avoid conflicts. Even if they have others delegated to resolve the conflicts they will still be involved in some capacity. That said, it may depend on the type of conflict being presented as well.

  3. has the staff at the hospital been paid yet, since this article has been written?

p align=”justify”>Update: Several persons still have not been paid and some have been paid from the date this letter was written. Some persons got all, half or part of the money that was owed to them, it is not that you purposely work without pay. When you are temporary in service and you are absent from work the money is deducted after your 14 days sick leave, when you are permanently appointed it is not. If you do not come to work because you are not being paid they don’t see it as an excuse you are still mandated to come to work. The only way to get your money is to resign and work elsewhere, easier said than done.

As far as we know the problem originates from Geriatric hospital who sends the paperwork late, then Ministry of Health who receives it then disappears. Then Personnel Administration Department where it magically appears and then disappears. The point is not to cast blame but to see how this can be improved. Management in those institutions do not care, if they did, they would ensure we are paid on time. School opening and my children don’t even have their school stuff as yet. I just wish the Minister would do something urgently about this.

  6. To the unnamed worker: Perhaps you and your work mates should consider making r eadjustments to what constitutes basic necessities for you. Your first cost cutting measure should be swift resignation from your so called union. Neither of the major ones has done anything other than sell out to this admiinistration . To save face they have now started to bombard us with rhetoric, that for what it is worth adds up to less than what P addy shot at.

  7. Talk about damaged legacy. A fair question would be whose is damaged more? That of Owen Arthur or Sir Roy’s? The world legacy when used in the same sentence as Dennis Clarke brings to mind this word.OXYMORON. Removed from the discussion he needs to be.
