…we will all learn that seeing big tourist liners and tourists walking about Broad Street is not the answer to our problems…

โ€œHotels are now doing tours and transfers with their own taxis, and this should not be so. They should use the taxis in their yards to do such tours on a rotation basis and not give the work to these big companies. These kinds of practices should be stopped. Oh how I yearn for Errol Barrow. How do you expect the local people to survive when all the sweets are given to others? Carl Pinder, Nation Newspaper, 2/21/14: Port Taxi men Sucking Salt

While we immerse ourselves in the tantrums and idiocy of both the Barbados Labour Party and the Democratic Labour Party, there is a growing movement among the poor, and downtrodden that is revealing itself. Those who believe that our nation is only sinking from an economic crisis and essentially uninspiring leadership, across the political divide, are sadly mistaken. We are in the midst of a potentially dangerous social revolt that will have repercussions for at least fifty years, unless we abandon petty party politics and pay attention to those citizens, who have been economically and socially marginalized by both the BLP and DLP.

Nowhere in the economic management of our country, has the poor black business person been more systematically marginalized, than is evident in the multi- billion dollar tourism industry. The industry was hijacked by a ruthless bunch of foreign investors aided and abetted by lazy, almost parasitical local corporate leaders. They refused to invest in the country that has propped up them and their wealth for over three hundred years.

In bed with those local corporate mercenaries, is the so โ€“called political managerial class that used the industry as a nice cushion for party lackeys, on both sides, who got jobs but could never effectively promote the tourism product overseas.

The concerns of the writer quoted above are nothing new. It is a known fact that our taxi men and women, over the years, have been forced to park their cars overnight by the port, in order to get one job the following morning.

While the tourism ministers bragged about tourist arrivals, they never developed any economic safety net, for the small business persons who had invested in the trade. Some will argue that tax breaks were given to those who wanted to purchase vehicles for this purpose but even with the incentives, they were not guaranteed a single penny because the big tour operators were always reaping the true benefits. In other words : What is the sense of giving a man/woman a pretty fishing boat , when you know that the fishing banks designated are already depleted or controlled by others?

The same hoteliers in cahoots with the black political managers, did all in their power to chase the vendors off the beach because they were making a very comfortable livelihood and this was very offensive, to those hoteliers whose properties, had boutiques and similar establishments selling the jewellery and other articles, that small black entrepreneurs were selling on the beaches. In other words, they wanted the whole hog! In the mean time, the hoteliers were ripping off the tourists with exorbitant prices for meals and other related products and were not supporting the small farmers to any great extent. The hoteliers succeeded in pricing themselves out of the market and then turned around and blamed the same political managers; the beach vendors; the workers and everybody but their pitiful and pathetic selves for their now exposed inability to improve industry performance.

Mr. Pinder and his colleagues will not get any assistance from the politicians or the major players in the industry because what is happening to them is a well orchestrated plan that has been working against small business people like him for the past forty years. As I posited earlier, the economic malaise with which we are presently dealing is only the tip of the iceberg. The truth is that we have elected to destroy small manufacturers; small farmers; taxi men/women; beach vendors; small fisher folk; entertainers; small hired car operators, small restaurateurs and virtually all the small mainly black players in the industry, in order to satisfy foreigners and the local power players.

Those who are now scampering to beseech the IMF and distant lands to bring us out of this self imposed odyssey of mal governance and ad hoc nation planning are missing the point. Within our walls, the question of economic enfranchisement for the majority of our people must be on the agenda of those seeking real change. To overcome British/European colonialism and almost two hundred years later, to go cap in hand begging another ethnic group to be our saviors is nothing more than pure stupidity. It is grounded in nothing more than an unbelievable disrespect for our struggle to date.

Like Mr. Carl Pinder, we will all learn that seeing big tourist liners and tourists walking about Broad Street is not the answer to our problems. Perhaps if the collective economic planners of both the decadent Barbados Labour Party and the equally decadent Democratic Labour Party, had spent less time chasing their black brothers and sisters off the beaches and more time ensuring that these creative business people were indeed given a bigger piece of the tourism pie, the industry would have had more significance for the average Barbadian. They chose to destroy the Pinders of Barbados and turned a blind eye to their own short comings. As the Mighty Gabby once said: โ€œOne day coming soonโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

  1. Plantation………Cow, Bizzy et al are so in your face with their damn greed, has anyone of them apart from boasting about polo, started a polo school in Barbados that would benefit the majority blacks as it does the minority on the island? or are COW et al too busy being WELFARE RATS, LEECHES and PARASITES to the taxpayers in Barbados The politicians continually encouraged them for decades so now Cow et al will cry because they see their WELFARE MONEY coming to an end.

  2. @ John,
โ€œThe plantation owners were not at all brutal; it would have been counterproductiveโ€ฆ.โ€ Are you sure?

You mentioned two names: I am familiar with the Haynes family and have visited the church in St Johnโ€™s where a number of their family members have been buried. I will not mention my connection with an individual from that family.

I shopped several times at DaCosta in Warrens last year. I was unaware that this name was synonymous with the slave trade; nor have I heard the term โ€œBig Sixโ€. If I was aware of this I would have boycotted this establishment. This is why it is imperative to reconstruct the education system.

I am left to ask myself: how could a tiny island dismissed by its European neighbours as been barbaric and uncivilised grow into perhaps the โ€œgreatestโ€ empire ever established throughout the ages?

I no longer have the stomach to contribute to this blog, however I will continue to follow it.

I hope that the spirit of revolution can be stirred in the Afro-Bajan.

  3. Sure

First take a read of an article by Robert Goddard.

Robert Goddard is one of the Bajan Goddards, probably a couple of years younger than you and me, probably went to Lodge.

He was a journalist for a while in Barbados.

Looks like he deserted the profession to study history and published this article in 2001.

Unfortunately, it is in a learned journal and the article will cost $14 US to download.

If you have access to a good library you can probably read it for free…. a few dollars perhaps to photocopy.

I got mine at UWI at less than 50 cents a page.

    http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/3745133?uid=3737576&uid=2129&uid=2&uid=70&uid=4&sid=21103448317401

My argument is simple and starts from this premise.

Whatever problems/challenges wonderful situations we face today have taken years to develop and are the responsibility of our leaders, past and present, their actions or lack of actions and those of their lackeys.

Believe me when I tell you they had many undesirable lackeys …. much like today.

    Its about corruption.

    Absolutely positive!!

Why else would we Bajans be so peaceable!!

Plus, my ancestor, referred to by name in the will of his owner in 1721 and also more simply as a negroman would not have been given freedom and a couple of acres were it any different!!

The truth is sometimes a bitter pill to swallow if you have false but cherished ideas in your head which you are not prepared to challenge.

Told you it would depress you further!!

Don’t worry, BS&T is owned now by Trinidadian interests.

The few cents profit on your $ does not go to any descendants of the Haynes family but to Trinis.

You can breathe easier with that knowledge the next time you shop there.

Well Well | February 24, 2014 at 1:02 PM | @ This year will be a little different , The world know better than the Bajans what is going on in their home land for they love lies better than truth , With lies there is a lot of long talk and talking , Truth is very few words then followed by silents ,
All the land they wanted to build on now and once again go back to feeding the island , Overseas food have GMO and all other junk in side for more money and they will die 20 sooner than nature allows ,
People are waking up in some areas , but its a little to slow. We are on the ground and we see and feel ,
If they own the land find if not we hope they build and fix the Hotel well , for we coming for them .Fraud is Fraud and no CROWN nor AG and crooks ass PM and his Ministers With PIMP titles can change that,, Buyers warned. There are no good deals in Barbados.

  8. Plantation…..nothing lasts forever, including thieves.

  9. @Z0000
You do not need to go as far as the Bridgetown Port gate to observe the atrocious behavior of the taxi drivers. Just at the top of Broad Street near Nelson, you will find the most uncouth dont-give-a-damn set of taxi drivers. They are Foul mouthed , always shouting, and at times ,up close in peoples faces waiting on the lights to cross. As a visitor or a resident, I would not engage the services on any from this group. One wonders if the slogan, “Tourism is our business, play your part ,” applies to our taxi drivers.
There seems to be some disconnect between the Public Service Vehicle Drivers, and the public who they depend on for a living.

  10. @ John, thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately I was unable to play your attached you tube clip โ€“ When the Moors ruled in Europe. This video is not available to play in my country โ€“ what a pity.

We will have to, politely, agree to disagree over the alleged brutality of the plantation owners.

โ€œWhatever problems/challenges wonderful situations we face today have taken years to develop and are the responsibility of our leaders, past and present โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ I would agree with you to a point. I believe that people wherever they reside get the leaders they deserve. Political leaders by nature are confident and are perceived by the masses as being intelligent, articulate and driven. If leaders are not questioned or challenged by the masses they will certainly at best make poor decisions and at worst as you suggest practise corruption.

The leaders of Barbados, past and present, are well aware that historically Bajans have always been a โ€œpeaceable peopleโ€. This emboldened them to commit gross crimes of negligence whilst in government making decisions that have endangered the very sovereignty of this country.

I fear for the survival of my Afro-Caribbean brothers and sisters in Barbados. Almost fifty years in power and one tool in the toolbox: tourism.

A Barbados Scholarship should be offered to someone who is studying a subject of relevance to the development of the nation.
    ++++++++++
I donโ€™t have a problem with changing the criteria required to gain a Barbados Scholarship but who determines โ€œsubjects that are relevant to the development of the nationโ€? Isnโ€™t that somewhat subjective? Is Art and Literature relevant to development? What if a student wants to be the next Kamau Brathwaite ( Barbados Scholarship recipient) or the next George Lamming? Students will study subjects that interests and stimulates them, perhaps the answer lies in revamping the education system so that by the time an individual wins a Barbados Scholarship he or she will be focused on studies where they know they can make a difference.

I must confess that your persistence in this matter is really very intriguing. I find myself drawn to learn much more. While I have heard of the ladies mentioned I dont know how the primary lady came by the land in the first place. I do know that some people are very quiet in their pursuit of Wealth Accumulation as my sister, who was a bank Teller in the mid 60s once recounted, it could be shocking seeing the numbers in certain Bankbooklets eg huckster woman with the equivalent of about $2MN.

Is there a source link you could point me to?

We dealt with the living persons and they are the truth HER-Story of events , Maps with names on the PLANTATIONS missing as the rewrote the book of Barbados and remove other book to prop up the new lies of their HISTORY. G.Dennis Clarke QC at YEARWOOD &BOYCE ,other big named QC and Sirs Ministers know and look to hide like AG, PM, MOF, Todd are some of the best crooks at UDC,

Bank accounts at Barclay”s Bank all gone Missing and other off shore and Ships.T& T is a clue,
BLP and now DLP took over the Estate for PVT use,

  21. Plantation…..it’s easy to figure out the modus operandi in Barbados, you have a few local whites pretending they are saviors of the majority blacks, you are yet to see a white policeman, street sweeper, garbage collector, bus driver, fireman, hotel maid, hotel door man, hotel porter, postman/woman….as a matter of fact, very few bajan whites work unless it’s in a firm that’s family or friend owned and they are somehow always a manager over the blacks, even though quite a few are semi-literate……you can guarantee while the blacks are being overcharged for everything, the local whites pay less for everything, not any great leap to see with the aid of corrupt politicians lands will be stolen from the elderly, taxpayers money redirected to help the likes of Cow who knows where the pressure should be and on whom it should be exerted in both political parties…….lot’s of nastiness and if the black governments don’t see this is the correct time to break that cycle of stupidity, they will just keep the population going around in circles.

One close source just told me Cow’s trucks on the island are in bad shape so he is trying to bully the DLP ministers into giving him contracts to buy his new trucks, remember, this is the same ass got up on BBC boasting he is the richest man in Barbados, but does not want to take his RICHES to buy new trucks, would much prefer use taxpayers money if the politicians are stupid enough to allow him, so Plantation, it’s quite easy to figure out what goes on in Barbados, one does not even have to be living on the island.

Right now Cow is aware that the population has accumulated wealth in the billions, as Moneybrain has figured out, that burns the hell outta Cow cause Bajans are supposed to be poor, broke black people dependent on him and his ilk only, as I said, the ball is in the court of the population, let’s hope they see things for what they are and let Cow and his band of thieves look elsewhere, while securing their wealth and not let anyone including the governments get their hands on all that accumulated wealth.

  22. @ Well, well

Stoute and Farmer were white men.

  23. Hal……I actually know some bajan whites who work really hard, but that is the exception rather than the rule and even if you used to see them in the stores in Bridgetown back in the 70’s as clerks, now you see them as mostly managers, it’s rare, I believe there was one bajan white police some years ago, you can count them now on one hand and still have fingers left.

  24. @ Well, well
I just named two white police, Sir Michael’s father and farmer. But the substantial point you are making is a good one.
If only those lazy people aat Cave Hill were any good we would have had a number of books on the indigenous white business class.
I have seen one book, on the Goddards, but overall the local white business class had failed.
You may recall the Hutchinsons in High Street, Gardiner Austin, Mussons,, various import/export merchants in Roebuck Street, the small rum producers, from Pretty Girl to whatever, all gone or nearly gone. David Seale is holding on to the RL Seale brand, but they selfishness and lack of business acumen have led to the failure of the rum industry, our only world-class industry (and not tourism and the politicians dream of). They worked on the plantations as book-keepers and overseers, but those days are gone.
Even the cricket clubs they once dominated – Wanderers, Pickwick, YMPC, Windward – are no more.
They have failed and sold out to the Trinidadians; many have moved to Canada and Australia.
As a business class they failed.

  25. i am not a fan of Cow for many reasons but those who have been highly critical have yet to produce a product that can help with the babados economy say whay u like the man Cow( give or take) has done his part in helping to build the barbados economy…wish i could say the same for the detractors like Well Well whose only source of wealth and worthwhile input to this economy has been “verbal diahhrea

  26. Well Well, you’re quite correct about the white police office. He was actually the only white police officer in the entire force back in the 1980’s I wonder if he is still an active member of the Royal Barbados Police Force? I saw the guy on Roebuck street one day backing in the 80’s and was quite shocked because never had I seen a sight like that in the predominantly black Barbados.

  27. @ Hal
Ironic, that we call the white indigenous business class failures but they still control considerable ,if not most of the wealth, and their businesses are still being passed on from generation to generation. Not too bad for “failures”.
However your broader point/position is understood.

  28. @HAL and WW
Lack of business acumen caused failure in Rum Industry???
Please provide your Professional Analysis with details, thanks.

HINT: The US gives $ billions in subsidies to the Rum Industry in PR and the Virgins to the point of cross purposes between those 2 areas.

Many of the companies you mentioned were bought out by larger entities like BS&T. Businesses GLOBALLY change hands and go under all the time.

RL Seale is very cleverly run and their Rum business is performing at a very high level due to good management, subsidies from the European Commission and the strategy of reserving for very Mature Rums.

MT Gay was sold 34 years ago to a very large US organisation, a smart decision. WIRR has problems with costs primarily the result of having to pay much higher prices for raw ingredients than major regional and global competitors. They bottle Gin for large organisations and did innovate the Malibu Global brand!

If Cave Hill was any good they would have produced some World Class business success stories by now instead of young Accountants that have serious trouble learning in the Professional Accounting workplace. The Big 4 have had to seek people from The Phillipines and India????????

They sold to the Trinis (my father was probably the first in the 1970s) because they had OIL MONEY and could PAY top price! HAL, I have a business for Sale in Bim which should fetch $14 MN and the Trinis are willing to pay $16mn BUT if you can come with $17mn it is yours!

More seriously, the partners were at Retirement age and the Bank was reluctant to increase lending to the older set, while the mid 30s younger brigade, including a gent with brown pigmentation, were not yet able to come to the table with adequate financing—–hence sell 67% to RICH floating on OIL Trinis. This BENEFITTED everyone concerned as financing ceased to be an issue and GROWTH was the result. JOBS increased and there were people of colour in senior positions in accounting, marketing and sales. Such a fiasco and sad case???????

  29. @ William

Everything is relative. Compared with the black people (Five & Ten, Simmonds Bank, James A. Tudor, etc) they have done well.
Not a single one of the substantial black-owned businesses has passed from one generation to the other, nor gone on to be a regional force.
The black professional class prefer to be lawyers, doctors or civil servants. It is a question of confidence.; The black professional class lacks confidence in their business acumen.
Politics is the easy way out, spending taxpayers’ money.

  30. @ Moneybrain

I will not go in to a long diatribe, but compare the rum industry with the Scotch Whisky industry – both invented at about the same time. Whisky contributes over ยฃ20bn to the Scottish economy. Compare what our rum contributes to what other major rum-producing economies contribute.
How many people are employed in rum-producing in Barbados? If a young school leaver wants to train as a distiller where does s/he go to learn?
When I am in Edinburgh I often go the Whisky Museum, apart from RL Seale and Mount Gay, where can I go to learn about the history and making of Bajan/Barbadian rum?
In any case, there is no legal definition of Barbadian/Bajan rum in a culture of lawyers who know everything..

  31. @HAL
I thought that Sir Hil was a History Prof so lef de historical aspects to him!

HAL you comparing the UK with 250 TIMES the population to lil Bim. PLEEEEZ! Scotch by definition can only be produced in Scotland. Rum can be produced anywhere! The problem with Bajan Rum is the size of the country versus competitors. There are many people that hate Rum because they have only ever had garbage from Bacardi (fingernail polish remover)

On the subject of migrating to Canada, Aus etc, I can say that in my mid 20s I did not appreciate Tom’s Tax of 70% on my bonus in 1979, $900 for me and $2100 for Govt Wastage. I was also concerned that eventually CORRUPT CLOWNS would control Bim, like now so. If I am not the Captain—why should I sink with the Ship and get abused by the likes of some pun here because of my success??? Besides many darker folks wanted Whitey gone.

  32. @ Mpneybrain

Scotland only has a population of about 6m, the same as Caricom. In any case, rum is a global business.
Scotch Rum can only be produced in Scotland, so should Barbadian/Bajan rum. But whiskey is produced all over the world; the Japanese are big producers.
We need a legal definition/protection for our rum if not in time it will become like Demerara sugar – produced all over the world.

  33. @ Moneybrain,
    Whitey can be offensive.

  34. @HAL

These people lie to their own kids as like the renters on the land lie to theirs back up by book written to fool the people of the World and Barbados tourist , But it can not fool , long living Her-story papers names and dates that does not match,Your Minds will rest better knowing ,
As we do our Work , The People of Barbados will see the light will get much brighter and live better On the Island in the Sun,
We at Plantation Deeds do not want to be the next COW, We will be who we are , the lovers of our Nation and to do our best for all Bajans, if need be to be at the beach every day relaxing , To let the tourist come enjoy and go back home., We are home , no need to work like a slave for no one , but our self.
We want the Best for Barbados that was Beatrice Henry dream and Violet Beckles and We here at Plantation Deeds ,We have our Marching Orders to the Letter.
We fist have to get the crooks out of the way , even if it be a Life work ,
Remember under slavery everyone had a JOB ,End of slavery no one can find WORK,

  36. AC….please, you are always the head one complaining about the white man this and the white man that, total fantasy, we are stating facts without hatred.

Mark….people still speak of him up to today, but I don’t think he’s in the police force anymore.

Moneybrain…..I never knew that Mount Gay was owned by US business people, prior to being sold recently to Remy of France, I am sure most bajans are unaware of this also. Your point is taken and most know that Bajans prefer watch their money in the bank as opposed to investing it, they may be right to a point, look at the current global mess…….that leaves the local white owners to sell everything to foreign people who have the money and therefore it is never returned to Barbados…..

UWI graduates are not prepared for real world issues, hell, I am told they are not even prepared for the world of work in Barbados, something need to happen, eyes need to be opened and real soon.

  37. Hal…….i never heard of Stoute the policeman, but unless people understand what’s going the cycle will never break, that is the bottom line.

  38. @WW and HAL
Was Ronald Stoute not the Commish?

Wunna forgetting Murphy, whose sons went to HC, the older one, and the younger to Cawmere (newsed to play against him in Cricket).

There have been many waves of White emigration and my cousin born in the USA was a Miami Dade Policeman in the 1960-70s ( had a K9, who had a higher rank than him)

  39. @WW
UWI needs serious transformation. Firstly a relatively poor country does NOT have the luxury of educating large quantities of youngsters in PolSci, Sociology, etc The money should be spent on education that is functional eg Accounting, Med, Law TECH etc Imagine that Bim has had to hire young Accountants from India and The Phillipines, Nurses too REBLOODYDICULOUS!

Meanwhile some Commie lecturer has filled up the youngsters head with pure shyte about how Communism is so utopic blah blah NONSENSE! Here in Canada it is the same thing and 20-25% of Uni grads have to go to Community College to learn how to Earn! Waste a $$$$$$. Plenty kids go to Uni when they should have been learning a trade like Electrician, Carpentry etc BUT NO that is beneath the lil darlings here in TO. Guess who makes the BIG$$$??? You could have a PhD bought here and Lecture at UNI and the Electrician making 2X what you make!

PLANTATION DEEDS FROM 1926 TO 2014 , MASSIVE FRAUD ,LAND TAX BILLS AND NO DEEDS OF BARBADOS, BLPand DLP=Massive Fruad

Going to school is great but to be lied to, it maybe hard for me to be in school when the head of the school is a LIAR. I am then there to travel the world with papers he signed? If a fly drop in my soup , the entire POT goes in the sink an trash, No part of the soup to me is good,
What i see , is that they get some school get under paid and run to leave the island to the Ministers , lawyers who then will rape their Families when they leave. By the time they get back they cant afford the land or some one else is on it , Laeving Barbados to those who can not get a VISA to leave or never made friends to visit else where. Old and the stuck , and when you get back the FFFFed ,
I have a god feel on what i see , there is wide GAP , of the old ,and the left behind,Then the title PIMPs come in and do as they please,
Until the records of Barbados is restored we will keep at this,

Was Ronald Stoute not the Commish?

RONALD STOUTE WAS INDEED COMMISSIONER OF POLICE

HIS SON, SIR MICHAEL, TRAINS THE QUEEN’S RACE HORSES.

  42. @GP
Was Joe/Francis in class with you at HC?

  43. Joe Stoute was a couple of years ahead of me.

Stayed in Barbados ….. did not do too badly for himself.

  44. GP and Moneybrain…..were those from the Stoute Drug Store at the corner of country road and roebuck street family?

Moneybrain…..know of a group of kids in Canada graduated from this ivy league university last year and could not find a job for well over a year, at least one had to return to skills training college and can never show that ivy league degree when applying for work…….goes to show.

  46. RE GP and Moneybrainโ€ฆ..were those from the Stoute Drug Store at the corner of country road and roebuck street family?

    DONT THINK SO

  47. @ Well Well

I knew Mr. Gibbs, the white man who run Stout Drug Store when I was a young lad attending Roebuck Boys Primary back in the 1970’s And I happy to report that my elder brother worked at the drug store for many years, and to this day my elder brother and Mr. Gibbs son Barry are still friends . Unfortunately, Mr. Gibbs passed last year at the age of 90.

  48. @ GP

So what about my son with the RBPF? His collegues at Regional Training Centre nick-named him ”The Ghost” when they were training back in 2001/2002.

  49. Well Well, I have the strangest feeling that you’re a white woman because you defend their honour like the African Hyena in pursuit of carrion on the African Savannah.

  50. Mark……give me one example, I try really hard to be fair instead of sounding neurotic like our friend AC.

By the way, if i wanted to build a hospital and get paid taxpayers money in the millions, like COW’s big brain scam plan……….i would get someone in the US, Canada or Europe to donate two cheap kidney machines to the QEH too and take all the credit…………that hospital deal would certainly make him a billionaire.
