Even though it has not become widespread public knowledge, September 2013 became the 18th consecutive month of long stay visitor decline and recorded the lowest stay-over arrivals of any month in the last 11 years. As someone who has invested their life savings and 25 years in the Barbados tourism industry, it give me no pleasure to state this unpleasant fact but someone has to say it. If only in the interests of survival.

The time for remedial action has long since passed. Once again it is now a case of damage limitation and focusing on what the private sector can do for itself to avoid annihilation of the industry as we know it. This may at first appear dramatic but you only have to look around at other businesses on the island to understand that a sector who has been financially drained for a year and a half cannot be immune from the same challenges others are facing.

Not that our policymakers are listening, but I am going to make a few suggestions:

  1. Establish a National Marketing Committee (NMC) in the shortest practical time, comprising of proven professionals with a rotating Chairman, chosen irrespective of any political party leanings.The existing Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) board would cease to play any functional part in promoting the destination, or simply be disbanded, based on non-performance.
  2. Place the opposition spokesperson on tourism (regardless of which party is in power) on this committee, to ensure there is true non-partisan participation in decision making and understanding of the current problems.
  3. Every current or planned national marketing initiative should be fully appraised for past or potential cost-effectiveness with realistic targets set and constantly monitored.
  4. A small opportunity team is put in place to systematically follow all mentions of Barbados on the various social media sites, intelligently respond and maximise positive public relations while fostering smart partnerships.
  5. The current Government either implements in a specified time period, or honestly admits that they are unable to bring about the much vaunted planned restructuring of the BTA and the introduction of a truly all embracing Tourism Master Plan.
  6. As there clearly the political is not there to bring about point number five, sit down with the staff at the BTA and see how the organisation can be shaped into a more efficient slimmed down unit, who can proficiently carry out the direction of the NMC.
  7. Issue a tender to attract a local company, who would re-build the websites of the BTA and Ministry of Tourism, keep them up-to-date and handle the advertising and public relations of these entities, in tandem with overseas placement agencies. The rationale for this is simple. It presently takes far too long to update inhouse websites and social media sites.
  8. One of the first tasks of the NMC would be to explore how our niche markets like villas and boutique hotels could work co-operatively in joint campaigns to maximise overseas market exposure while sharing and reducing promotional costs.
  9. The travel trade plays a critical role in distributing our tourism product, but frankly, we as a tourism driven economy, have become too tour operator dependent. A plan would be put in place to increase direct rack rate bookings, by ten per cent.

I am going to hold the initial objectives at nine for the time being, because it appears Ten-Point Plans have little chance of implementation and ultimately success.

  1. Times have changed. The Barbados dollar is badly overvalued resulting in high prices. Tell me how Barbados can match the competition being put forth by other destinations including Costa Rica where I am vacationing this week.. Staying at a 5 star Shearton for $139 per night. Dinner for 2 last night cost $49 with a vista view of the island from a top floor restaurant. Airfare from Miami return was under $400. That is the reality of what Barbados is up against. What is the plan to compete?

    “What were they thinking back in June 2011 when BTA named Rihanna as the island’s tourism ambassador?

    The BTA announced in New York that it had inked a three-year deal with Rihanna to “exclusively promote” Barbados as a tourist destination through advertising campaigns, promotional appearances and the social media.

    “In the hearts of every Barbadian, Rihanna is known as the girl down the road, but to the world she has become a musical sensation and social phenomenon,” said Barbados Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy.

    “She is a great source of national pride to Barbados, and we are thrilled to enter into this formal partnership to promote Barbados as a leading tourist destination,” he added.

    Rihanna said she has joined forces with the BTA because she wants people to experience the “spirit and warmth” of her fellow Barbadians.
    “Barbados is a place like no other, and one of the reasons for this is the spirit and national pride of our people,” she said in a statement.
    “I want each and every visitor to this beautiful island to experience what makes this destination different from all others and that is the spirit and warmth of my fellow Barbadians,” she added.

    In addition to promoting Barbados worldwide, the 23-year-old singer will kick off her duties by bringing her “Loud” tour to her hometown of Bridgetown, the Barbados capital, on Aug. 5 2011.”

    That visitor arrivals are down 18 straight months suggests that Rihanna’s promotional efforts, ad campaigns, appearance and social media contacts are not working.

    That her Diamonds World Tour concert coming to Kensington on November 1 is still being advertised in Barbados newspapers and tickets are available at Ticket Master and other locations suggests that her followers will not be flocking to the Island.

    If her followers are not snapping up the tickets to come and see the girl down the road perform; why would anyone think they would spend a couple thousand dollars to come to experience the “spirit and warmth” of her fellow Barbadians.

    This could be the only stop on the tour that will not sell out.

    Will BTA cover the shortfall in revenues that were in all likelihood guaranteed to her management company to agree to the Barbados date.

    What were they thinking?”

    And now, no concert.

    When Rihanna can sell out concerts all over the world, but cannot sell out in Barbados, things are REAL BAD.

    How does every Barbadian feel in their heart now about the girl down the road?

    Clearly her followers were not snapping up the tickets to come and see the girl down the road perform in sufficient numbers to justify the cost of staging the concert.

    Probably the only stop on the tour that will not sell out.

    The ambassador has not delivered.

    Will BTA refund the air fares of those few overseas fans who did pay for airline tickets to come to Barbados to see the ambassador perform?

    What are they thinking now?

    According to at least one media source (Markets Press) under a bold headline ‘Rihanna Diamond Tour Homecoming Concert Banned by Barbados Government’. Citing that the ‘Barbados Customs have seized
    15 shipping containers’.

    Who is marketspress.com? Are they a reliable/credible source?

    That storey sounds like a bit of stretch

    I think I will wait to read it in other sources before I buy it.

    Authorities are quick to report it when they catch a boat with some drugs of St. Lucy.

    Surely authorities would issue a press release and it would be reported in the local media if the concert was banned because ‘Barbados Customs had seized 15 shipping containers’.

I already favor St. Lucia as the best Caribbean island I’ve been to – mostly because of the genuinely friendly people plus the beautiful Pitons. I’d stayed at the Halcyon resort for several years, but having earned our free week, stayed at the Grande for the first time. Best views, beach/bay and quick easy access to Gros Islet and the Friday night jump up. We did several dives and took an advanced diving course – not easy to beat all the other fantastic trips we’ve had, but this was our best Sandals experience to date!

It provides a barometer for what’s in and what’s out in global travel and offers a way of assessing emerging trends that will define the $6 trillion industry in the coming years. Getting as much information from people who have been to a travel destination.
    Researchers used an algorithm “that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period,” to come up with their results.

    The problem with these points are as always the pace these will change the fact that we need a fresh image for the market in a short time.
