Adrian Loveridge – Owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel

This week marks column number 156, or three years, and I applaud those of you who have remained loyal and focused on the message, rather than the messenger. While I may have offended a few people along the way, that was never the intention.

From my very first visit in the late nineteen sixties, I always felt that Barbados was a special place. At least in the early days, I had this great utopian dream, that at some stage, within my lifetime, the island could easily become from a tourism perspective, the Switzerland of the Caribbean.

Easily has become perhaps, an almost unreasonable objective, as most of us know, very little success is achieved without considerable and consistent effort, careful planning, attracting passionate and committed persons who can implement coherent policies and maintaining high standards. Sadly, unless those key components are in place, and working together, there is precious little hope of what must be conspicuously needed and necessary change is brought about in the foreseeable future.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I complimented the current Government for announcing in the 2013 Budget, a reduced rate of VAT on ‘hotel accommodation’ and the DTS (Direct Tourism Services) providers. At the time, I paid particular attention to the statement made by Minister of Finance Sinckler that ‘the initiative would cost the Treasury about $9 million annually’. Whilst, puzzled by this figure, I thought, who am I, a mere small hotelier to question what had clearly been put together by a whole Ministry and it’s many staff members. Surely, some indepth research was undertaken to assess the cost to Government and the full ramifications.

There appears to be no shortage of state agencies available to glean accurate information, including the Ministries of Finance and Tourism, Barbados Statistical Service, Barbados Tourism Authority and the very vocal Central Bank of Barbados. It now transpires that not a great deal of thought at all had gone into this part of the ‘plan’, and what is equally disturbing is that this was not seized on by the Opposition in both houses and the Independent Senators.

It also partially explains why the Barbados Tourism Authority did not highlight the significant savings that our visitors would have benefited from, beginning 1st October . As a result confusion reins throughout our tourism marketplaces, the travel trade, within our local tourism industry and especially concerning, across most of the related social media sites.

Past policymakers may have dismissed mediums like Tripadvisor as a ‘menace’, but if anyone in authority really thinks they can ignore a website attracting a quoted 260 million unique visits each month or 70 new contributions posted every minute, then they are clearly living on a parallel planet. I seriously wonder how much longer ‘we’ can go on shooting ourselves in the foot while arrival numbers and spending continue to plummet.

Last week, I touched on our current investment climate and whether ‘we’ should be addressing it’s imperfections. That was before, yet another restaurant bit the dust with the loss of a further 50 jobs.  Citing the reasons, Chairman, Christian Mouttet of Trinidadian based Prestige Holdings Ltd., ‘it became unsustainable due to local operating costs, increasing losses and the declining local economic climate’. This, after reporting a 20 per cent hike in profits for the company, during their last published six months trading.

  4. Well, Well,

Maybe he has just heard that August 2013 long stay visitor arrivals were the second lowest in the last 11 years and that last month confirmed that we have endured 17 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS of visitor decline.
We are now down almost 26,000 visitors so far this year (when compared with 2011) so any of the heady predictions that we were going to end 2013 ‘flat’ are entirely ridiculous.
Clearly the BTA marketing strategy is NOT working.

According TO YOU more Tourists are going to St. Lucia than Barbados. Your strategy seem to be that more Tourists mean more of a vibrant economy, yet in St. Lucia the economy is in the doldrums, how do you account for that?

“Marginal economic growth forecast for Saint Lucia and other OECS countries”

Why are Tourists dollars not filtering down to the average man in the street in St. Lucia? How much of the tourist dollars actually remain in St. Lucia anyway?

Why do St. Lucians have to turn to crime to get by when so many Tourists according to you are going to St. Lucia?

This putting all your eggs in one basket as recommended by you is one of the main reasons we in the West Indies find ourselves in the mess that we find ourselves in. Sink all of your financial resources into Tourism and everything will be honky dory you are trying to say, but this is just not the case if we use your Beloved St. Lucia as any type of yardstick.

  7. Carson………you are still on and on about St. Lucia, people out here are worried about Barbados, how does what is happening in St. Lucia translate for money to Barbados to prop up the forex?

  8. Switzerland has licorice
Lucky you Adrian.. you don’t have to leave Barbados to find something twisted ..black …and bitter

  9. @Adrian

Is there a press conference in the offing?

The MoT should follow the PM’s lead and be more visible and vocal about his ministry.

  10. A little strange hearing details about the Almond project from the MoH in the press today.

  11. Adrian Loveridge Avatar

    David,
I have not heard anything about a press conference, but I am not sure the MOT has anything to say anymore that would change the status quo.
That is, unless he really is going to unveil the Tourism Master Plan this month.
Frankly, there have been so many silly predictions and broken promises, it is difficult to know what to believe.

  12. The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report has long singled out Switzerland for its extraordinary competitiveness. This is Switzerland’s fifth year at the top of the rankings, marking a propitious time to take a closer look at what makes this small European country so successful.
Switzerland does consistently well across the many areas that make a country productive and economically resilient. Indeed, compared with the challenges being faced by many advanced economies in Europe and elsewhere, and despite being surrounded by countries struggling with managing the euro’s difficulties, Switzerland has maintained an impressive growth performance and enviably low unemployment of just 4.2%. While many qualities drive this exceptional performance, three of the most important drivers can be singled out: the excellence of its institutions, the dynamism of its markets and its strong capacity for innovation.

  15. Will have to wait and see just how many visitors will arrive for the Rihanna show, November 2013. LOL

    @ Alvin,

Still awaiting your response, tickets for Rihanna’s November concert in Barbados sold out yet? According to Rihanna on instagram, not all girls love Beyonce but tickets for her Auckland, New Zealand show (10/18/2013) sold out in 15 minutes. Rihanna I know is performing in Barbados, November 2013. Tickets yet sold out for that show? According to tripadvisor.com, tickets for that show were available since August 2, 2013.

  16. 1) the swiss don’t put up with lazy, arrogant politicians, one thousand signatures on a petition can oust a political party, no 5 year wait, or hoping the opposition has the balls to table a no confidence motion, the public/taxpayers know that their money manages the country, politicians are supposed to work for the people who pay their salaries and will not allow politicians to sell them out, these are serious people, bajans like too much petty party politics so that is the traits they get in politicians. Most bajans are now becoming aware that the government relies on taxpayers funds to manage the country, decades earlier the voters were led by slimy politicians to believe that government was doing them a favor.

    2) what compounds all of this is the fact that Switzerland is landlocked, that means they have to use their brains to be successful, no depending on tourists or tourism, though they do get their tourists.

what compounds all of this is the fact that Switzerland is landlocked, that means they have to use their brains to be successful, no depending on tourists or tourism, though they do get their tourists.

It attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists both in summer and in winter.
Switzerland is one of the cleanest (if not the cleanest) countries to visit.
Its landscape from the Alps to the lakes to the cities are breathtakingly beautiful with first class service and facilities available right across thee board. But be prepared to shell out some handsome dough. It’s very expensive.

Decrease in occupancy rate in July

WILLEMSTAD – The occupancy rate of hotels has decreased by 11.3 percent in July this year compared to July 2012. This is according to a report from the Curacao Hospitality & Tourism Association (CHATA). The occupancy rate was 73.8 percent last year, this year that figure fell to 62.5.

The rate of a hotel room increased from 140.98 to 142.60 dollars. Revenue per room fell from 104.08 to 89.17 dollars. These numbers are subject to change because not all hotels have handed in their figures. For more statistics and comparisons visit their website

  19. The main difference between Switzerland and Barbados is that in switzerland, brass bowls die off in winter…..Here, they get fat and become politicians and bosses.
If we had a rough winter, tough attitudes to lazy fcukers, deep disdain for incompetents and low tolerance for politicians, Barbados would be even better than Switzerland.
In Switzerland Food is EXPENSIVE as shiite (and mostly consists of bread and cheese) and you are seriously expected to WORK for your pay… Buses and trains run ON TIME and everything works … or gets changed…. brass bowls either change 180 degrees or die off in two years.
…bout here too damn sweet…. Brass bowls want free university to prepare them for sweet life.

  20. Carson…………you always highlight things that are of no value to Barbados, i don’t see where you mentioned Curacao being a duty free port, they will always get tourists, it’s hard to beat their prices.

  21. Miller…….Switzerland is breathtaking and expensive, i spent a great part of this summer there, tons of tourists.

Why are so enamoured with this cutting & pasting thing? Are you trying to outdo Zoe? There is nothing wrong with reading other people’s thoughts and ideas but what about yours except when it comes to cussing the BLP and people who oppose your damned lying party?
How come you are so restricted in the nature of your contributions? Even ac has an opinion on everything, what about you?

You should visit these places and broaden your mind; plus you need a break. Well, Well recommends Switzerland, have you ever been there?

  23. Cruise ship vacationing in the Caribbean is now a thing of the past, that and timeshares. We recently saw and experienced a global recession, a brutal one, one that has left foist remnants. People now are careful to spend. Some incidentally have little or no extra to spend for vacationing any where. So, Caribbean islands that have been heavily dependent on tourism must now secure another or other products to sustain.

Barbados is financially broken. Tourism and the low impact of sugar and rum there will not save it. Barbados during its years of plenty, under BLP reign wasted and tasted things of non-necessity. Government under the DLP rein must now do something – move your ass or lose it. A large part of the American Automotive industry is now owned by the government due to bail out (2008). The American Auto Industry, during its years of plenty, mainly the General Motors Corp. wasted and tasted things of non-necessity. Obama, immediately after taking office had to do something about the American Auto Industry – move his ass or lose it.

  24. Switzerland is all very well if you like that kind of thing but it has unbelievable levels of state supervision of how you live your life. You have to conform, conform, conform both to rule of State and societal rules where you are being observed all the time for “correctness”. Apart from the scenery and sports it’s quite dull so are the people in my opinion. I wouldn’t swap!

It is being recommended as a place to visit. To spend a short holiday.
Living there might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But yet Switzerland is voted as No.3 on the list of the world’s happiest places. According to the World Happiness Report 2013 Switzerland is ranked in third spot as some of the happiest people in the world using UNDP and OECD approved criteria.

Many of the things you mentioned about Switzerland could be said about Singapore which is considered the little Switzerland of the East. This kind of discipline is a prerequisite for small countries to compete among larger countries that are more endowed with natural resources and larger populations. Switzerland is a first World country as a result. Singapore clearly on its way.

  31. I born in barbados in the 1960. there was no tourism ! there was sugar cane ,rum,we had garment factories,we produced products to export.we used the eastern Caribbean currency.

THEN BAM——–tourism up the yin-yang people were friendly .when you passed some one on the street you said hello.

and they also say hello. did not matter what color you were.then barbados got its independence.IN-CASE you all did not realize it we got it because the English could no longer make money off of us and Barbadians were going to England and going on welfare.no more breeding of the slaves.no more raping and pillaging the slaves black and white.

so they left.they left us to handle our own island which much slave blood had built.

then came the Canadians and Americans with their deals and telling us what we need and such like.

the low morals of them came with them.

    they were godless.worthless.

they were as some would say low class trash looking to make money off us bajans.

they gave us money,, we took the bribes.

    now what do we have??????????????????????

DO YOU THINK YOU WILL EVER BE FREE?????????????????????????

THING IS WHERE THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE BABIES GOING TO GO??????????????????????????

ANSWER THAT ! or ask your prime minister .where are the jobs for the children to soon graduate?

  32. Now that the information is out there about government’s plan for Almond Beach Village…

  33. David,
I personally think Government has chosen the right option, but I think they need to clarify a few things. Will the mainland Chinese still be involved in the construction and funding? Also, the 100,000 plus figure quoted is extremely optimistic. If you look at some of the existing Beaches Resorts, some rooms take 6 persons, but many accommodate 4 or less.
Timing of course, is also important. Planning permission and construction could take 2-3 years, so there will be no significant change to airlift for some time.

  34. Is there a more pessimistic depressing individual on earth or mars than adrian loveridge. Gob’s every action is condemned by this fake hotelier.

We cannot run Barbados on the stifling negativity of a loveridge who is applauded in his foolishness by the BLP yardfowls, with the notable exception of his nemesis Muscle Mary. Barbados is a mature, respected nation known for tackling and solving its problems.

Decisions in the interest of the people of this country cannot be second guessed by gallery clowns like him.

Three hundred thousand folks elected the DLP to govern Barbados for the next five years. We are not changing that result so loveridge and the blp can jump high they can jump low. They can rub all the shoulders and backsides they want its a democracy. naysayers must Get used to it. The BLP lost end of story.

Barbados is not a banana republic or as Barrow termed them one of the islands run by bandits.

  35. just so you know.
wonder if this ever happened in barbados???????? hummmmmmm
Sticky situation: Hawaii molasses spill killing thousands of fish

A leaky pipe used to load molasses from storage tanks to ships docked in Honolulu headed for California has sent thousands of gallons of the brown, sugary substance into a harbor, killing fish and jeopardizing an ecosystem. KNHL’s Tannya Joaquin reports.
By Audrey McAvoy, The Associated Press

Thousands of fish are expected to die in Honolulu waters after a leaky pipe caused 233,000 gallons of molasses — enough to fill seven railroad cars — to ooze into the harbor and kill marine life, state officials said.

Hundreds of fish have been collected so far, the state Department of Health said in a statement Wednesday. Many more fish are expected to die and thousands will likely be collected, it said.

The fish are dying because the high concentration of molasses is making it difficult for them to breathe, said department spokeswoman Janice Okubo. Television footage shows some fish sticking their mouths out of the water.

The department has warned people to stay out of the area because the dead fish could attract sharks and other predators like barracuda.

The brown, sugary substance spilled Monday from a pipe used to load molasses from storage tanks to ships sailing to California. The shipping company, Matson Navigation Co., repaired the hole and the pipe stopped leaking Tuesday morning, spokesman Jeff Hull said.

As much as 233,000 gallons of molasses leaked into the harbor, Matson said. That’s equivalent to what would fill about seven rail cars or about one-third of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Underwater video taken by Honolulu television station Hawaii News Now showed dead fish, crabs and eels scattered along the ocean floor of the harbor and the water tinted a yellowish brown.

State officials expect the spill’s brown plume will remain visible for weeks as tides and currents flush the molasses in to nearby Keehi Lagoon and out to sea.

There’s a possibility the state could fine Matson for violations of Clean Water Act after the department investigates the circumstances of the spill, Okubo said. The state’s focus is currently on public safety, she said.

The state was documenting the fish it collected and keeping them on ice for possible testing. Officials were also collecting water samples. The data will allow the department to estimate the duration and severity of the contamination.

Matson ships molasses from Hawaii to the mainland about once a week. Molasses are a made at Hawaii’s last sugar plantation, run by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. on Maui.

Matson said in a statement it takes its role an environmental steward very seriously. The company is taking steps ensure spills don’t occur in the future, it said.
