Happy Fathers Day!
Happy Fathers Day!

What Makes a Dad.

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight, fatherday
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it … Dad

History of Father’s Day
History of Father’s Day Festival as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work and struggle of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington that just as we have set aside Mother’s Day to honor mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father. However, some scholars opine that Father’s Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honoring dad’s on a special day is over 4,000 years old. There are a few more claims about the Father’s Day origin about which we will learn in this page.
Earliest History of Father’s Day
Scholars believe that the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Father’s Day remained in several countries all over the world.
History of Father’s Day in US
Modern version of Father’s Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father’s Day saw the light of the day.
The idea of Father’s Day celebration originated in Sonora’s mind when she per chance listened to Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora’s mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care.

For those who quick to marginalize the herdsman, farmer,nourish-er, provider; fathers are very important role models and deserve recognition.

  2. It seems that a willingness to hype Fathers Day is fading.

    Happy Fathers Day…BU Dads
its the most important job you will ever have

  6. Interesting comment in the newspaper today. There is no buzz in Bridgetown with Fathers Day on us/ What does it mean? We continue to treat Dads like crap.

  7. I find it alarming that most of the men on BU have not as much offered a Fathers day Sentiment to other fathers, I guess that would be viewed by other men as “not Manly’ and effeminate. this is the problem with some men who feels that emotionalism other than abuse makes them look sissified.. a trait that most woman detest and prefer to see a a softer not necessarily weak, but compassionate side in men.
it is truly astonishing that men would comment without haste on homosexuality but would distance there comments from a day to honour them…………….need to hear more from u dads and how your influence has been beneficial in your child upbringing
    HAPPY FATERS DAY

David ,We continue to treat Dads like crap.@ ,, So true , Everyday is fathers day, when said or chat on that is fine , We make sure our Heirs dont spend a cent for the Corporations based on a date on the wall.
Mothers day everyone looking for flowers and dinner over time for workers. ,
All Fathers get is a bad name good or bad and the Bill at the end of the month, My Heirs can say it , make it or type it ,and we good.
All most fathers get is child support , food, gas, cloths, school, light, water, heating oil, car insurance , school, car note ,and all think it comes out the air . For that is what we to do , if the woman have an out side child we have to pay for that also ,, and the DNA ,,, YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER , but pay any ways lololol…
So then the father will be the system for them to run to when unhappy at home . Run to mom and blame dad. Better or for worse ,,,, Most of us get the worse no matter what is done.

  9. It is reported we have too many single parent households headed by women. Perhaps the single mothers are to blame for how they have socialize their menfolk.

  10. Happy Father’s Day to all those men who have accepted the responsibility of fatherhood. To all those men who have abandoned their children and refuse to contribute financially and emotionally to them, have a miserable day !

  11. since men would not step up to the plate and honour their OWN. I ac dutifully has acknowledge and willfully take on such responsibility letting MEN know that as much as we hate to say we LOVE YOU we DO and respect and appreciate the love and support you strive so hard to give to your children and the mothers. With all due respect and Humility this is your day and one I am proud to share and HONOUR with YOU.

  12. My children ain’ say squat to me yet … stupse … Still time

  13. Now get a call … Yee haa ….! Better late than never …

Look. If it is true that Father’s Day originated in the US it can therefore be assumed that the reasoning behind it was economic. So it is fizzing out … Guess dad’s are not so easily duped, and even if so, not for very long…

  14. BAF

Lol…my experience was just as yours. Oh well…perhaps we expect too much too soon.

Ya know we Dad really don’t mind not being ‘overly’ fussed about ….is suffice to know the wife an offspring cares..like giving a card or gift..as a reminder….extras like being taken to lunch is icing on the cake…..but we hardly get that too often on this day….

Baffy got a call, Robbie still waits…I got hugs kisses and a promise….(dont ask)…Don’t bother about the other fellas…they probably got nothing and vexx….LOL

Fathers should spend considerable time with their children playing and having fun. As discussed earlier, fathers play has a unique role in the childs development, teaching, for example, how to explore the world and how to keep aggressive impulses in check.

Fathers should maintain the active, physical, and playful style of fathering as their children age. Active pursuits like tossing the football, playing basketball, hiking, or going to the library may prove more valuable than spending time in passive activities such as watching television. This also supports the childs emotional well-being, social development, and physical fitness.

Fathers should engage in productive activities with their children such as household chores, washing dishes after meals, or cleaning up the backyard. Research consistently shows that such shared activities promote a sense of responsibility and significance in children that is, in turn, linked to greater self-esteem, academic and occupational achievement, psychological well-being, and civic engagement later in life.

Fathers should spend time fostering intellectual growth in their children. Some studies suggest that fathers involvement in educational activities from reading to their children to meeting with their childs teacher may be more important for their childrens academic success than, at times, their mothers involvement. (Nord, C., & West, J. (2001)

Daddy, a Fathers Day gift is an awesome way to honour you, but dont forget to honour your family by spending quality time with them.

We admire and honour fathers who are responsible and honourable to their families.
