Prime Minister Freundel Stuart

As a boy at secondary school my love for the arts drew me in an astounding way to the Masterpiece called “A Psalm Of Life” written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Today from that Masterpiece I borrow the excerpt “Things are not always what they seem.” Is there any other way to digest the disgusting display of dishonesty, magnified by the simple fact that thousands of us in this person reposed our trust? This CLICO mess is shameful. It is scandalous. God knows that it is also felonious.

For too long the poor folk in our little country have taken it up the wazoo from persons who view their participation in politics as a path to riches. We as a people have always acceded to their ways for in times past, issues like this CLICO master con were raging fires on the political platform, the embers of which were quenched by the thrill of victory by one or the other.

Fellow Barbadians I beg you—lets not allow such to obtain this time. As I said earlier when rats run rampant their droppings can be easily traced, so while the trail may lead us to the St. John’s Parish Church, the rancid odour of this nefarious plot takes us right back to the land of the living. There is where these victims MUST BE MADE WHOLE.

Cynicism I am sure will be the label attached to anyone who dares to question the PM’s new found urgency to introduce integrity legislation to a nation that was promised the same, when expediency was the name of the game. That was then, this is now and “Things are not always what they seem.” You see Mr.PM, you and every last member of your cabinet were there at the Bussa Roundabout. In Bajan parlance association breeds complicity.there too, we see good ole Bajan tiefing as simply that—B or D, it is tiefing.

One path Mr. PM, puts your party (and mine) back in good graces. That path must be used to parade the participants of this national shame on a “perp walk.”Anything short of that says business as usual. The longest walk begins with one step. Anxiously Barbados awaits Frundell’s.

  1. Interesting to hear that Tony Marshall has parted company from VoB for the time being. David Ellis made the announcement on the show yesterday.

  2. Hamilton Hill; I think this is your best post ever. If Freundel can go the extra mile with this it has the possibility of not just healing the DLP from the stink of the Thompson legacy, but propels the ones remaining on the ship into an almost unassailable position for winning the next elections.

“There is a tide in the affairs of men”. I hope that Freundel recognizes that the time is now to take that tide and that he is da man.

There are of course hints that Freundel has done the maths and that the decision to jettison DT and by extension Mara has already been taken. The fact that there has been no attempt by the DLP so far to question the Deloitte audit’s facts is one glaring clue that this is so. Another is the juxtaposing of the Integrity Legislation issue contemporaneously with the CLICO debacle is a move that is counterintuitive to the interests of the DLP. Another is this post from a stalwart DLP defender like you.

The game is afoot. Hang on!!

  3. The submission above implicitly calls for Mr Stuart to exhibit strong, principled leadership to start to bring a satisfactory conclusion to this imbroglio.

It is said by those who know that there are seven main ingredients (in varying quantites and proportions) that go into the makeup of great leaders. These are: integrity, vision, judgment, passion, courage, empathy and emotional intelligence.

If a leader lacks (or just fails to demonstrate at crucial times) even one or two of these traits, there is little hope of those who follow the leader keeping faith in a better future.

I don’t know about you all, but I have yet to see Mr Stuart ably demonstrate even two of these attributes. I wish I did, but I have not.

I hope that time will prove me wrong.

  4. @ Paul Barnes!
You are truly amazing after highlighting qualities for good leadership you conveniently emphasizes that these qualities amplifies in times of crisis > NO! PAUL these qualities should be exemplified at at all times. However another protecting of OSA which would seem to give him a pass BY you PALING COCK. How convenient. What a load of crap you just mustered up to download so early this morning.

  5. No math needed – sort out the CLICO mess to the satisfaction of the policyholders, or Stuart and his government gone.

  6. @ac

You and others can easily challenge the views of others without going personal.

There is no doubt that Stuart has had to lead the DLP and the country during an extraordinary and unprecedented time.

Whether we believe he has the qualities or not he is the one who will have to demonstrate by his actions and decision making in ways which convince others.

  8. @check it out
You are correct. This is the make or break moment. Not sure if 8 months is enough though without too much collateral damage.

    @paul barnes
Integrity, judgment (whether u like um or not) and courage, that’s three. The previous PM had 4, maybe 5, hence lacking “1 or 2”

    @david
Herein is the problem. FS has been unable to convince people of anything. Not that he doesn’t mean it, intends it, or follows through in his own time…but the general feel is that his words have a hollowness to them. Real or perceived.

  9. An Observer.. Avatar

    @ Observing .
As I have afore posted , your pseudonym is too close to mine for me not to give you a rap on the knuckles to bring you back into the line of rational thought..Re ” FS has been unable to convince people of anything..” How come every audience to whom we see him speak always appear riveted to every word coming forth. At least he has to be a convincing speaker, dont you think ? Closer “OBSERVING”/ observation might help in the future. Peace my brother.

  10. @An Observer

    Feedback is always appreciated.

    @Observing

Also there is a sense that people want PM Stuart to do.

  11. @ac – I am not sure how you read that I was defending Owen Arthur in my comments above. I referred to Fruendel Stuart alone, and made no comment about him relative to any other specific person. I just attempted to draw a comparison between what I have seen of him so far on the national stage and to the ideal demonstrable qualities in a highly-effective leader. God knows I did not even have Mr Arthur in mind when I made my comments. Clearly you have a different view, and I respect that. As I said, I hope that my fears for the future because of what appears (to me, at least) to be Mr Stuartโ€™s very weak leadership capability, in several areas (including the CLICO debacle) are unfounded. As a Barbadian, I have a vested interest in the success of the political team and the nation that he leads. As a Barbadian, I also have the right to express my, on the evidence, well-justified fears in this regard.

  13. Aspects of Barbados are on the decline

The approach by people working in service oriented operations is so bad that it threatens the social stability of this country. We had workers who deal with the public in a hostile and uncaring way and it is having a rippling effect that does not bode well for this country. Something must be done.

There was a a time when people were trained for life by family friends and teachers. What we have now is a bunch of un-trained people walking around in this country, taking up jobs just for the sake of money and not giving of their best. Crude rude and uncouthed now characterized what used to be a civil , well organized and disciplined Barbadian(worker)

Exemplary teachers and civil servants in general were a staple in Barbados. It does not seem so any longer.
We now have SOME Uncouth and indisciplined workers and people in general who dont care or show any respect for other persons , consumers , patrons etc : These Uncouth , Unmannerly, Indisciplined people include
    SOME :
Teachers especially of a certain gender
    Store clerks and Shop Assistants
    Politicians
    Police Officers
Public Servants throughout the Public Service
Drivers OF private vehicles on the road
Drivers of PSV AND Transport Board Vehicles .

The indiscipline is compounded by people foolishly and slavishly addicted to Blackberries and displaying stupid behaviours among other negatives.

Something is going wrong in this country Barbados.
Something needs to be done and done now
    Talking is not enough!

This contribution is inspired by a comment by Admiral Nelson reference to a Teacher saying to a student
“The Idiot with the Blue bag –‘ do something or the other’——“

    He dont talk either

  15. @observer
As David said, I speak with reference to conviction through action, not speechifying.
Also, every audience in Barbados always has and always will listen closely to their PM speak.

Lastly, any thought that is capable of reasoning can be considered rational (just matters to who), erego I “reason” that I am quite in line.

Thanks for the tap though, I shall strive to remain present participled…

  16. @observing โ€“ In response to your response to me:

It would seem to me that the CLICO mess should be an ideal showcase for Mr Stuart’s integrity, if he could muster it. Mr Stuart saying that he is in “no-one’s back pocket” does not cut it, when one sees him fraternizing with Leroy Parris and brazenly (provocatively?) acknowledging him as a “pal”. If nothing else, this demonstrates a stunning lack of emotional intelligence and a truly alarming tone-deafness to the concerns of the majority of the electorate – a serious flaw in a politician with ambitions for longevity in office.

I would agree that there is more evidence that Mr Stuartโ€™s judgment skills are strong. At least he plays his cards close to his chest (some may say excessively so), which is usually a sign of someone who is thoughtful and makes measured decisions. Generally a commendable attribute in a leader! The corollary to this however is someone who spends too much time navel-gazing and lets the opportunity for decisive action slip because of analysis paralysis. Mr Stuart needs to watch out that he does not fall into this trap, as he does seem to be overly in love with the idea of taking his own sweet time to do everything.

Courage, you say, Mr Stuart demonstrates. I could agree with you on this, but only in the context meant by Sir Humphrey Appleby in the โ€œYes Ministerโ€ TV comedy show. You may recall the scene where the Prime Minster was considering implementing a novel policy with risky and wide-ranging political ramifications. Sir Humphrey tells the PM that it would be the most courageous policy he has ever proposed; but then he follows that with: “‘controversial’ will lose you votes; ‘courageous’ will lose you the election”. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. old onion bags Avatar

Serious attention to integrety legislation also requires as STEP 2… the cutting off of good friends and allowing the law due process…”I worked for the man, I see nothing wrong with him..Is he a leper ?”..words that have come back to haunt….
Let’s see how you proceed with this one courageous Mr.PM we are watching Eagerly.

  18. Personally, I think Stuart is not afraid of the IL but many of his party are, therefore, he will either put ALL to the wolves and may the honest ones win or he would delay the IL vote until the date for the next general elections is constitutionally due and leave it “to be continued” after the elections, If the DLP wins whoever will be the next P.M and certainly not Stuart, will have to complete it, in case the BLP wins they too will have the same job. In the mean time Stuart will be accredited with introducing the IL . This will give him a fairly good fairwell from politics. He can sail into the sunset with a good pension, which a few years ago he never expected, and something positive to his name.

  19. @paul
    Glad we could “agree”! ๐Ÿ™‚
I won’t argue emotional intelligence since, clearly there is some lack, though one can argue the aspect of EI that speaks to being in touch with one’s own feelings applies.

Wrt integrity, he has not shown any lack of integrity and thus far through statements and actions (or inaction) has shown to possess this. It now needs to be demonstrated as you said and I totally agree. Elections are close and wiggle room is evaporating, that has to play a big part. No PM governs to lose elections, simple as that. Time will tell, we shall all observe…btw, how would you have rated the past PM? Or mottley or sinckler? A number out of 7 would do ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s really intriguing how the many “Stuart” apologists seek to glorify and, ad absurdum, beatify the man. A manโ€™s greatness should be judged by his actions and reputation among his fellowman. Any great leader should be so greatly admired by those empowered to elect him to Parliament that this same leader should feel exceedingly safe and secure in his electoral briar patch. The St. John, St. Peter or St. Michael N.E; or even that carved out by the great Sir Grantley in St. Joseph which is testament to his influence and goodwill and which is currently being wasted and fast dissipating. Running from electoral riding to electoral riding is not indicative of any commitment to constituents or capacity to handle failure and set back when things get โ€œroughโ€.

There is nothing legally wrong with interacting with people of alleged ill-repute and of suspect dealings, especially when one is a member of the legal profession sworn to uphold the principle that a man is innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law. But people of high moral character and discerning judgment attributable to the title โ€œgreat leaderโ€ do not publicly acknowledge such close association either socially or businesswise. Despite the smallness of the nation and intertwined family ties, leaders entrusted to uphold the laws of the land and to execute the affairs of the State in a fair and honest manner must NOT be seen as being so encumbered or hamstrung. And to openly express such deep association only exacerbates the impression that some pals of the leader are above the law and insulated from any attempts to bring them to justice.

A good leader must exude confidence and determination to inspire his colleagues to follow and work diligently as a team to ensure the leader looks good in the eyes of the public and by, definition, the electorate. Having people in a cabinet collection of puppets and those figurines of treacherous intent to undermine him would only serve to diminish his already shaky position and create a lot of tension to cause the cabinet to implode and shatter the egos of the chess pieces.

We shall assessed and rate Mr. Stuartโ€™s tenure as the โ€œrealโ€ PM not only by his actions and achievements during the last 17 months but also how he proceeds with this CLICO challenge. His approach to resolving the Barrack (now going international) and the Pierhead marina/ Lagan leaking boat problem would also be monitored for grading as to his qualification as a โ€œdear greatโ€ leader. Show us how much the law ought to be respected and how those responsible for the marina ding(h)y leak are put where they belong with the jetsam.

In the BLPโ€™S daily PR sheet commonly known as the Nation newspaper on Feb29, 2012, Sanka Price had the audacity to say and I quote :
โ€œA check with the Supervisor of Insurance would have revealed that CLICO had not been complying with regulations as it had not been filing its financial statements in a timely fashionโ€ฆโ€ฆ(Thompson) as Minister Of Finance should he not have checked on whether the company was fully complying with its statutory regulations?โ€
If Sanka Price was not so biased he would have the balls to ask the same of Owen Arthur who was also Minister Of Finance when the Statutory Fund was in deficit but NO โ€“ because Sanka is on a mission โ€“ he is a BLP lackey masquerading as an editor.

All three of the major media players have their own political slant. Fortunately for you the DLP has two (2) on its side with the most powerful one, the TV, in the forefront.
Next you will be accusing VOB of similar biases in favour of the BLP opportunistically forgetting that Maxine, Harry, and Tony were once key personalities on this station. Go ahead and accuse this blog of similar slant in view of the recent poll which did not shed a very optimistic light on your party’s electoral chances.

It is NOT the BLP who are setting the bar on corruption. It s NOT in their interest to do since it would limit the opportunities for kickbacks and largesse.

Listen for once, ac: It is the PEOPLE (especially those who bought into the promise made by the DLP) who are calling for and demanding Integrity & FOI legislation. They are also demanding a much higher standard of behaviour and performance from those we elect to conduct our affairs.

Stop the BLP blame talk. You have crossed the line in the sand and its time to realise you have dug yourself in deep above your head to even think straight.

You said: No math needed โ€“ sort out the CLICO mess to the satisfaction of the policyholders, or Stuart and his government gone.

I don’t think that the satisfaction of the policyholders is paramount vis a vis Stuart’s chances of winning the next election. What is important re. the DLP going or staying is sorting out the CLICO problem to the satisfaction of the whole country, especially in relation to a solutionthat would not negatively affect the economy and Barbadians’ livelihood.

  32. @Paul

PM Stuart making the statement he did about Parris being a pal no doubt he regrets making in hindsight. Agree with observing that from an EI perspective he was found wanting in that instance. Truth is though that mistakes will be made by leaders, they are not gods.

“Truth is though that mistakes will be made by leaders, they are not gods.”

    Quite right!
But why see it as a mistake? Why not as a true expression of his feelings and a genuine reflection of the relationship between the two men.

David (D T, that is) would have denied him so why should F S do a “Peter” on him? That’s what friends are for: in good times and in bad times.

  34. Mr. Stuart has tagged himself to this mess. He claimed Parris was his friend and he found nothing wrong with him. Are his hands clean?

  35. Stuart could not distance himself from the DLP funder! Let him be man enough after all that brazen talk to sink with Parris!

    Paul,
I totally agree with you. PM Stuart had the perfect opportunity to rid the DLP of this menace called Leroy Parris when he took over the leadership of this country.

Freundel could not have known what was going on in the relationship with Leroy Parris, CLICO and DT. He could have clearly distanced himself from all of this by saying that Leroy Parris and David Thompson were friends and that now he has taken over the leadership, the relationship would be different. And since he (Freundel) is in no one’s back pocket, he could have boldly declared that he was going to allow a JD to take over CLICO forthwith and let the chips fall where they may.

No, instead during the no-confidence motion tabled by Mia, he lined up with the other Dems and declared that the man is his friend and that he is not a leper. Now that the revelations have shocked Barbadians to the core, he is now coming to say he is going to bring an integrity bill.

Who these Dems think we Barbadians are, fools?

  38. Stop all this long talk. It is time for action! What are we going to do to get action, serious action to get every cent ! Hit the streets and make these people feel the pain. These government operatives still don’t understand what it means to have all your money tied up and Parris living large, David Thompson estate overflowing with millions of dollars and other close allies smiling to the bank. The time for serious action is now!

Aspects of Barbados are on the decline

One Observation : There are so many un-informed jackasses in positions of influence and decision making, who seem not to have the decency , common-sense or willingness to do what is right or to insist that it be done.

At present right has become wrong and wrong has become right. You dont dare try to correct anybody about their folly. The kind of responses and reaction you get are so hostile at times and other times so asinine that you quickly realize that it makes little sense. Your attempt to give advice is so scorned that it becomes a hopeless situation

One only has to look at cricket to see decline . Cricket mirrors this society, it can reflect the state of affairs in this country because it is so linked to the socio-historical development of the country.

I f something is not done in this country and done fast to correct the decline, Barbados is going to have a lot of work to do later on. Corrective measures must start in the schools because to my mind the schools are doing little to turn out good citizens. They are simply not preparing people for life and the Teachers (some of them) who seem only there for a salary do not care if the cabin ‘brek’ down.

The colonials left systems in place that we have not modified nor improved. We have taken things for granted and have just gone along not seeming to care about discipline and structures that help to build a society. We have coursing along by the momentum of past energy from our hardworking ancestors but We will soon be running on Empty ! What we have achieved so far is because of the hard work and dedication of hard working Barbadians of the past. This now seem to be threaten by ignorance and indiscipline.

I am particularly offended by people who work in areas that deal with the public. I do not like how customers are treated. I do not like how attendants treat customers.

    No manners whatsover.
    How we get so ??

And you have the unmitigated gall to come on this blog to say that the Nation is biased towards the BLP. Begone!! Where you you when in the lead up to the General Elections, the Nation was so critical of the BLP government? I believe it had a hand in the BLP’s loss. The Nation was very sympathetic to Mara Thompson in the by-election. The fact is that people are fed up of the DLP and it is being felt at all levels.

Everybody with a brain can see that the present crew at the Nation are at war with this government.
When the BLP was in power, Ezra Alleyne had a prominently placed columns EVERY FRIDAY – Ezra would spin and spin- defend Arthur constantly. Now the BLP in opposition, Ezra still got he column but nobody associated with the Government cannot get a column at the Nation.

As far as the Advocate – For 14 years the Advocate said nothing negative about Owen Arthur, They even had front page editorials attacking Mascoll when he raised the Gems issue against the BLP corrupt administration.Check the editorials- May Mr. A g..a..r..d.. rest in peace.

CBC ,man Prodigal you joking,right- It is common “news” that the BLP edited the evening news at Roebuck Street.Man they try everything to fire Rosemary Alleyne.

But the Nation takes the cake- Watch and see- Clyde Mascoll is campaigning every Thursday , you mean the people at the Nation could not get a different view sometimes ! Sanka Price and Albert Brandford will criticise angels before they say anything bad about Owen Arthur.
My advice to Barbados is check around , different sources, etc because the Nation is “eager” to promote the BLP!

Please Zoe, prayer for Le Roi โ€œGreenverbsโ€ that he might see the error of his materialistic ways and return some of the loot to the poor pensioners and life insurance policy holders. Ask your God, dear Zoe ,to show him the lighted path to salvation and that there is no need to have a mansion on the dayrells hill with a plantation and martins bay beach retreat with 3 gas guzzlers to boot and millions stashed away here and overseas. If only the FBI and other monitoring agencies should only reveal the truth.
Dear Zoe ask your God to extend his grace to the queen of St. John and as the HIS SUN rises melt the hardness of the royal heart so that unlike Queen Marie Antoinette she would not look down on the CLICO policyholders and say: โ€œThese easily conned suckers since they donโ€™t have bread, so then, they can all eat cake!โ€

I wish to refer to another blogger who mentioned in a different thread the consequences of materialistic excesses and wrongdoings. Zoe, pleaseyouโ€™re your beneficent God to send a clear message to the Roi Greenverbs and the grieving but rich widow similar to that quoted by โ€œTin Canโ€ from your good book of right and wrong; and the cost that the Angel of Retribution exacts from evil doers:

Chris once told me, I donโ€™t believe in God, I believe in the God of money. Given your troubles, here is a bit of good time honoured wisdom-
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can not serve both God and Mammon.
    โ€”Matthew 6:19-21,24
    Amen!

your remarks/observations reflects my experiences since coming home a few years ago. I hadn’t imagine there was another person out there who is cognizant of the state of affairs in this country. Now I know there is intelligent life out there.
