Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart

In addressing the question of whether it is better to be loved or feared, Machiavelli writes, “The answer is that one would like to be both the one and the other; but because it is difficult to combine them, it is far safer to be feared than loved if you cannot be both.” As Machiavelli asserts, commitments made in peace are not always kept in adversity; however, commitments made in fear are kept out of fear. Yet, a prince must ensure that he is not feared to the point of hatred, which is very possible – Niccolò Machiavelli

Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart finds himself in a quandary as a result the widely publicised letter incident. It is a fact some members of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) felt it important enough to seek an audience with the Prime Minister. Whether all of them agreed to sign ‘The Letter’ is irrelevant at this stage in light of Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler’s interview with Editor in Chief of the NATION newspaper Kaymar Jordan.

Since the revelation that some DLP members are concerned with  Stuart’s leadership and the length of his coat tails with a general election looming the political chatter has gotten noisier. The current reality for the government is that having to manage in the harsh economic environment would have made being re-elected a difficult undertaking. The imbroglio caused by ‘The Letter’ has easily shifted the advantage to the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) its own perceived leadership issues not withstanding.  Why the disaffected group would have entertained thoughts of communicating with the Prime Minister in the form of a letter remains unfathomable at this stage. Some say it is as a result of political ignorance and naiveté. Others believe the plot is a sinister effort to reorder the political structure of the DLP.

The debate will continue why Minister Sinckler made the decision to give the NATION a reveal-all interview. It is obvious from the Prime Minister’s few public remarks about the incident that he would not have approved the interview. Sinckler could not be so naive to believe that his tête-à-tête with NATION newspaper Kaymar Jordan given the weighty nature of his revelations would have killed the controversy for the DLP. He must have known or even been advised that his position within the hierarchy of the DLP would become tenuous at best. His admission in the NATION interview that he would never put forward his name just over one year of doing so since the death of David Thompson is instructive. A politician never says never. Why then has Sinckler signalled that he will never put his name in any hat to vie for the Prime Minister’s job? The answer probably is explained by a comment posted on a related blog.  If this is the case Barbadians have witnessed the sudden fall of a young politician of whom much was expected.

‘The Letter’ has created a headache for the Prime Minister. His options are limited. He can’t do nothing. Whatever he does must positively feed public perception that he is in charge of his men. The question is: will it be enough to sway the voter? Bear in mind many voters are currently siting on the fence for one reason or the other. One of those reasons which should concern not only the political parties but Barbadians themselves is a growing cynicism of politicians.

Sinckler indicated in the interview he sees no reason why the Prime Minister should fire him.  If Sinckler in his naiveté expects to continue his role, in a business as usual mode in the cabinet of Barbados, then the only conclusion to be drawn is that he is forcing Stuart’s hand to fire him.

Recommendation – send Sinckler to the Ministry of Transport, drop Boyce from the cabinet, Estwick to Finance and divvy up Estwick’s portfolio to Lowe, Kellman and Benn.

    @brief

These men are loyal to David Thompson the late. No discussion. NO clarification.

These were Thompson’s men as you say yet he appointed Stuart and Thompson’s men selected Stuart.

Isn’t this an obvious sign that Thompson felt his men were not ready and they themselves by selecting Stuart after Thompson’s death agreed?
    ====================================================
Thompson’s men toed the line until further notice.

It is alleged that late Thompson wanted Chris Sinckler to become PM and lead by HH Chris was appointed MoF to further enhance his ‘image’ and create acceptability for the PM position.

When we look at when the re-shuffle was made and the timing of DT’s death – can you truly believe that DT was in a position to make sound decisions? Will one say to me that DT was comfortable and in sound mind without drifting off and returning to normal?

HH tried his best to discredit Estwick (time longer than twine) … and HH is fixated now in positioning Chris.

If you say that the DLP will lose the Gov’t except we put forward Chris. All Ministers will want to meet based on the polls and to put forward the best plausible strategy including replacing PM Stuart now before it’s too ‘late’.

Those polls were conducted in St. Michael – for a national poll why only choose the areas where people are familiar with the individual that you want to lead.

Yes, PM Stuart acted as PM during the late DT’s illness – did Stuart at any-time took a decision in his hand? Constant consultation was with the PM. Who was the PM’s political advisor and best friend?

PM Stuart does not practice treason – and the team supported him during a very difficult time – they could have voted for Chris but they themselves did not have the confidence in Chris.

The majority does not have the confidence in him (Chris) now either – however, as I said earlier if I give the impression that the majority is with me – the PM will have cause for concern. Plus, Wickham pushing that the people want Chris and so, the MP’s fear that the image is not what the people will go with.

The people in Barbados want a leader of integrity, blameless, spotless. They will support PM Stuart!!! He will make decisions based on what he believes to be the truth. If PM Stuart perceives that the truth is tainted he just will not mete out any drastic discipline. He is that type of character.

Notice that he did not pull his inner circle (visibly into him) when he became PM. He allowed the people to be confident in themselves and to show their worth whilst becoming familiar with their duties and developing.

If the DLP loses this next election – all those people will be unemployed because we KNOW how BLP elected MP’s treat DLP supporters. Advisors/Counsellors/Friends are good – common sense, when heeded, will always exceed untimely advice.

By the way – we out here know that there is a Chris following and a Stuart following – we heard it months ago even when the Chris’ following was denying it. It is real now – however – the eleven is NOT a Chris following a fraction of the eleven is the die-hard Chris following. “Beware of wickedness in high places” this place is high.

  3. Chris had a cell phone and could have text the PM – all of the MP’s could have sent the PM a text – a letter is ‘formal’ and at this time gives the impression that the PM did not have their ear – a blatant lie.

We are not fools – if you want an urgent meeting among colleagues you use a Memo – URGENT – Notice of Meeting. Something underlying was/is taking place.

I do not know all of the pokers and pushers behind this ‘fracas’ but Chris (former General Secretary, current leader of Government Business) blatantly shows that he does not have capacity and basic common sense to keep peace within the Party.

If you want to be successful by God’s (righteous) standard ‘humble yourself’. Chris refused any position at Party level in the last Annual Conference and now in the Nation with an exclusive interview stating that there was a letter drafted to the PM. Clearly he needs training.

I will ask the question Chris – did Adriel have cold feet? As AG doesn’t he know the implication of a formal letter with majority support of a signatory who is not Secretary of an Association with the right to call a meeting?

I don’t believe that the PM is in a quandary because he is quite familiar with this type of behaviour from this group. One or two maybe added or subtracted but it is the same group from where I am.

  4. Of course this is my view.

  5. PM Stuart is behaving like a kidnappped soul. We cannot hear from him/ He is neithr looking left nor right up or down.. He is behaving like the ransom will not be paid . He reminds me of those old draught players taking a long time to make an obvious move. O come O come Fruendel and ransomeed captive DLP.. You actually met with the men and did not say away from me you workers of iniquity!
Anyhow this is Christmas and the gift of forgivness must be close to your heart. Think on these things

  6. Brief

I hear your foolish view about what the people want and do not want and who they are likely to go far … now how the hell do you know any of this …? You actually tek a poll .. jackass? Close to sixty percent of the population DID NOT VOTE in the last election. That number will hopefully be closer to seventy percent by the next election, and if the majority of a result is the voice of the people (GOD), that voice to me is saying clearly “F#ck it” and for good reason …!

  7. Check out this story in the Advocate,,, the PM and his sidekick lol

  8. A man who has lived his life without taking decisions cannot be expected to change at age 60. A man who has never had to deal with an irate wife or partner; or wayward children in a house is sure to be hard pressed to deal with nineteen characters of varying degrees of arrogance, stealth, envy, folly, and all the elements of human nature at less than its best. Think on these things!

  9. Ayub

Why are you surprised? The Prime Minister is not letting Sinckler out of his sight long enough for him (Sinckler) to get up to mischief.

  10. The PM cannot be draconian as some would wish. He has to balance decisions taken in government with how the publc will perceive such actions.

Why is it the NATION believes that because there is some kind of a challenege or concern with Stuart that they will not go about doing the government business and be civil to each other?

During the Mottly Arthur rift didn’t Mottley deliver from the same platform as Arthur for example?

    http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/seeing-eye-to-eye/

  11. @ AYUB
It is clear that you possess a fine sense of humour..That picture paints a thousand words. it depicts a calm, confident Stuart alongside a Sinckler who has been brought by the host to the party in order to create an impression. What was Sinckler’s status there? He does not represent a bordering constituency; there was no need for the minister of finance to perform any function related to his office; the mind boggles. But Stuart seems to be ignoring him and he looks anything but confident..talk about CANDID CAMERA !! Even though the event was sponsored by a man of the cloth I do not think there will be any forgiveness. STUART IS NO FOOL..

  12. The picture reminds me of those hollwood couples whose marriages are crumbling resort to photo ops as a way of denial. This is another one of Chris Sinclkler galant ways of denial without using the spoken word. Without all due respect to the PM he was being made a fool of again by Chris Sinckler! The word PERCEPTION is smirked all over Chris face,

  13. in the above comment the word “Without out” should be”With”

  14. After all the government would continue to function but world wide perception may be different . Shadows of destabilization in any government cause shock waves to its economy and no amount of photo ops can change that.

  15. @ac
It does not look like any smirk to me ; a smirk is a manifestation of confidence. That look betrays an inner hurt , the hurt of a man who understands that his days are numbered.

  16. @ David

I hear the PM has not instructed that Cabinet should be held today, as is the norm for a Thursday. It is rumoured the PM will be giving some of his PM gifts for Xmas:

Adriel will get a vacation on the back bench to relax himself for a few months
Boyce going to going Adriel on the back bench as company
Sinckler to Foreign Affairs aka Ass Always On An Aeroplane
    Carrington to Attorney General
Kenny Best to the Speaker of the House, as hard as that is to believe.

  17. @Antz

If it materializes as you say it is not entirely unexpected – would switch Paul for Best though 🙂

  18. Ayub; I think you are right

JB; I think your few words above get to the very heart of this situation. It will not get better.

Cassius; That picture indeed paints a thousand words to me but to my foggy lens the words essentially says.

FS: “This matter is closed, the letter was just a misguided way to get my attention. All is forgiven as far as the public is concerned. I will speak to the public on my magnanimous and Christlike forgiveness in my Christmas message”.

CS: Please leh 2013 come quick, cause 2012 gine be stressful for me. Everybody ‘gainst me.

  19. After having assessed the issues in this on-going saga, I have formed the view that Sinckler has become the victim of a sinister flattery. I have been searching long and hard to discover wherein lie the brilliance, charisma and wide-scale political appeal that commentators have been trying their hardest to attach to him. THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT SINCKLER and if he continues to delude himself that there is because his sponsors say so he will destroy himself. There is still a large number of persons out here who have a real – real understanding of what represents standards of excellence and few of us will commit the heresy of comparing Sinckler with Stuart.

  20. Antz; Whereas it appears that the gifts you mention might be richly deserved, the time has now gone for putting an appropriate wrapping on them. The Iron is now cold, striking it now will not have the desired effect and will indeed be counterproductive. See how the apologists that preach forgiveness seem to be increasing with every passing day.

No gifts for them this christmas. Business as usual and the cat and mouse game will continue for awhile longer. The effect of that game will probably ensure that FS will not survive as a parliamentarian nor PM beyond the next election but that is of little import since Chris’ tea leaves read similarly.

  21. @ Checkit-Out

I know its Christmas but what you wrote above is wishful thinking. Sinckler cannot survive unscathed, that much is for certain. Stuart’s biggest concern is when is the best and most opportune time to deliver the cou-cou punch.

Sinckler has sunk below the moral minimum of Stuart and can surely expect a hard lash from the man who has not just been plucked from a monestry.

  22. Eagle-Eyed;

I beg to differ. There is (was) something special about Chris Sinckler. Nurtured carefully he could have become the outward manifestation of a very good PM. However, he squandered his promise in the events of last week and exposed his achilles heel to be bitten by the asp. CS did not read nor react to the flood in a sensible way, he is now constrained to eke out his future bound in shallows and misery. However, I think DI, who reacted most appropriately with the exposure of the letter, is riding on a star that is probably in its ascendancy.

  23. To Uneducated:
Happy year to you too, but i shall still treat that compliment as a Trojan Horse and not the condom. I am sure Miller shall love that last piece of this sentence.

  24. To Miller:
My verbal and prose pugilistic friend. Happy 2012 to you. I wanted to say and family but was not sure if that included a “significant other”. Any way Happy New year to them too.

  25. Caswell Franklyn Avatar

The appearance of The Prime Minister and Sinckler sitting together is obviously contrived to give the appearance that whatever the DLP has joined together no man can put asunder. It my opinion that this uneasy marriage should best be ended in divorce, otherwise it will end in manslaughter.

Most of you would not know that the late David Thompson and I were friends from our days at Combermere, before he started to wear long pants. We had the type of relationship where I could ask him anything. One day I asked him about the inclusion of certain people in his cabinet. He smiled and said to me in politics you must keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Obviously, freundel has learned that lesson as well.

  26. Christmas | December 22, 2011 at 8:58 AM |

Sir Roy Trotman’s take on the unfortunate Eager 11 confusion in Bdos Today is the most sensible kudos to the Duke of York for his reasoned thought provoking analysis.

  27. @Checkit-out.
In our efforts at assessing character, it is sometimes more important to assess the crucial character trait that is lacking, what you have so aptly described as the achilles heel which can make a man most vulnerable. Sinckler lacks humility and as such is vulnerable to flattery. maybe if he were a student of Literature and studied Macbeth, Julius Caesar and the work that is most apposite in discussing this saga, HENRY V, he would have been better prepared to protect himself from the insecere flattery which was being trumpeted in his ears by the likes of Peter Wickham et al.
Ever time I listen to Freundel Stuart I am impressed by the fact that he draws heavily from the experiences and lessons which history provides ; there is really nothing new under the sun and parallels can always be found in the annals of history from which we may learn. Sinckler will do well to undertand this for his future conduct.

  28. I am not prepared to speculate as I see you people doing.
I want to offer the PM advice.

I can see that there is no way out of this for Stuart other than throwing in the Towel.
    Stuart has nothing to lose
He can work out a deal to become GG because his style is more suited to the job of GG
    Go for it Mr. Stuart
    I advise you !

  29. Eagle-Eyed; Well said. I essentially agree with your analysis of CS’ character. His abilities and promise is a different matter.
Re. Freundel Stuart, my take is that if he was as impressive as you hint in your piece this incident would not have occurred as the majority of the people who are presumably near to him, the 11 plus MPs, obviously did not see him in that light.

  30. @Checkit-out.
My dear fellow , he could not have prevented the scheming / plotting. The real test will come in how he deals with it and in that regard the jury must be out still. Let us wait and see what turns out .

  31. I think the Dems are confused. Stuart is suffering from a surfeit of advce which is coming to hm. from all sides He is paralysed by it for he does not want to hurt the DLP and he wants to give a punishing lesson to the traitors. Well both is impossible. He can do one without doing the other.. And in the meanwhile time is tight . He is appearing dithering slow and indecisive . A Stuart like quality which some people would like to elevate to a virtue.. The man of the cloth would like to make peace but peace without the successio of war is no peace. And cannot there be peace at any price.
By the way I read all the time the Stuart is so bright. Just tell me in what? . Is it law ? politics?. Am I missing something here or what? Think in these rhings.

  32. Eagle-Eye; You said “he could not have prevented the scheming / plotting.”

If FS had those attributes that you mentioned above there would not have been any scheming or plotting or, if there were, the putative scheming / plotting would have been contained within a small faction only and not have risen to the level where a majority of DEM MPs would seek to formally invite him to discuss the leadership pass they now find themselves in. To my mind there is / was significant discomfort in the DLP about FS’ leadership. The path he has chosen to respond will not, in any way, alleviate the concerns the 11 had. Indeed, I think that path is likely to lead to more discomfort in the near future.

Anyhow, I think the die is now cast. FS will take the best decision he can after allowing the passage of valuable time to constrain that decision to only one sensible choice. Hasn’t he done this before, the most notable being the St John bye-election where the election date was only chosen at the figurative last minute?

If FS takes no action, a denounement it appears he is drifting slowly towards, it also tells the story that he essentially agrees with the “grouses” of the “plotters” whose only sin would have been to try to meet with him to smoothen out some leadership wrinkles in their progress to winning the next election.

I essentially agree with “true to form”s analysis above.

  33. There is an old saying that the devil finds work for idle hands to do. We talk about firing these Ministers, not to say I might agree with a few of them being replaced; however in the famous quote of Sophia from the Golden Girls “picture it Sicily (Barbados) 2011. Take the same Ministers that are perceived as the trouble makers/ringleaders and pile the work on them, insist that they perform in their Ministries, insist and tie them to bench markers and performance markers. Make them perform, make them and the PS’s and their staff literally look for practicably/workable ways to improve this country’s employment status, credit rating, health care system, revenue, foreign reserves, youth, elderly, water resources, traffic etc.

They will be so up to their neck in wuk they will not have time for a coup – real, imagined, trumped up, bloodless or otherwise.

On anther note – and I just asking; cause I don’t know. What exactly is it that Dennis Kellman is bringing to the table? I have asked this question high and low and all the answer I get is that he supports the PM. Should we look for more than this as a qualifying factor? I’m just asking.

  34. BAFBFP | WROTE
Close to sixty percent of the population DID NOT VOTE in the last election.

They did not vote because everybody thought that Owen Arthur and the BLP would win. Nobody in their right minds thought that the DLP would win, maybe a stronger opposition but not win. Not even the DLP thought that they would win.
IT MEANS THAT THE 60% will vote BEES —BLP–

  35. I have deliberately stayed out of this conversation, George has been doing a great job. The Dems gloated when the Bees had their troubles but look how soon they chickens have come home to roost.

As a Barbadian, this whole episode sickens me to the core. It means that these people who are supposed to be running the affairs of this nation are not doing so and we can see the clear evidence, things are falling apart but they are fighting for power.

I have read Chris Sinckler’s interview twice and I had seen so many bold faced lies and contradictions, one minute he did not know, another he was not the mastermind, another Ronald Jones who said he did not know, yet Chris said that himself, Jones and Boyce discussed the letter. You cannot believe what he has said. But tell me something, who made John Boyce a power broker in the DLP, a four time loser!!! A man who just got into the House!! Just shows you how the DLP scarping the bottom of the barrel!

For Freundel to do nothing after what he said last weekend that coup or no coup, heads have to roll. If he just dithers along, he will forever be condemned as the do nothing PM. I hope he is not taking any advice from the pastor with whom they are pictured in today’s press. This is the same pastor who declared that “two PMs died in office but a third one will not die under my watch, David Thompson will be healed”. We all know the outcome of that prediction.

Did not Owen Arthur say it right, a bunch of wild boys with no governing experience!!!

Merry Christmas to all on the Underground and we pray God will save Barbados in 2012 from the Dems.

  36. Merry Christmas to you Prodigal Son and I hope God will help the DLP to save Barbados from a return of Owen Arthur and the Bees.

  37. @BAFBF

60% did not vote under the perception that the late DT was not ‘fit to be a leader’ based on the BLP propaganda machine which did not assess, evaluate nor conduct a poll on DAvid Thompson himself. DT ran a business which was not carried in the press as being unsuccessful, bankrupt nor corrupt. He lead his team. Nothing whatsoever to do with the country.

The BLP was not successful in 2008 GE even though they had 14 years of successive victories and had proven their ability in broad daylight to all and sundries.

I do not need a poll to say ‘if’ I do not need a poll to say that they are many that do not see Chris Sinckler as the best choice at this time to be leader of the Party or PM I say it without apology and others agree.

I believe the question mark after ‘jackass’ was an error – however – I am humbled that you would even consider to elevate me to your kine, level and breed (without a poll or examination) for which I graciously decline with due respect and admiration of your intelligence. Meaning that you can actually put a sentence together that we read and understand – God is truly good to all.

I understand that the public will have some relief come Friday in an address to Barbados by the Prime Minister. May God help us all as we go through what will be a torrid and final period in the life of this DLP administration. They promised so much, and could have delivered so much more, but obviously selfishness and blind ambitions pre-empted what is to come in terms of the final death throes of the paltry DEMS.

GCB, are you going along with the rumour of a pending “cabinet reshuffle” as a new year’s gift from the PM? It is known that a new permanent GG will be announced. But a date for new elections for 20 Jan 2012 with the 21st a birthday of special importance to the nation would be somewhat out of the decision-making character of the man at the helm.

One wonders what CCC would say about this rumour? If it is true, one can expect the defender of the damned lying party and OSA’s arch enemy not to slug it out on BU but crawl right back under the shaky party house building as a result rumblings of earthquake proportions on your namesake the street.

  41. @George

Will the PM dispel the rumour making the rounds that Gollop will be made AG and Richard Sealy his Deputy?

  42. George C. Brathwaite Avatar

    @David

I know not what would be said, but I do know of rumours. I am not impressed by the veracity of the rumours. I think the PM will play a politics that shows his immense power but he is more likely to be conservative than radical.
If it is true to say that he is a student of political history and the classics, then he may choose to only mortally wound one or two. Who may these two be? I think it is better to have come forward and said ‘no’ and ‘forever’ than to sit in the trenches of the backbench and say, ‘not me’, let me put the man who once said, ‘no gangs in Barbados’ upon you. Whether the PM can effectively wound the Queen given the proximity to both the King and Kingmaker, time will tell, but the Jack may yet have a trick up the sleeve since the plot has only been derailed and not destroyed. Always remember that the pollster, the prankster, and the political mercenary are still out there. The old people often say, that ‘pay back is a bitch’. A shuffle or reshuffle still leaves the Joker and the Queen in the pack.

‘A shuffle or reshuffle still leaves the Joker and the Queen in the pack.”

The not so shallow Hal taking a gallop to the post of AG is not to be dismissed lightly. Problem here that your clico friend “meaner than a junkyard rat le roi” will remain an ‘untouchable’.
But offering the queen of the east a ministerial pick with a high public exposure portfolio (family and sport) would be the bitchiest political ‘sleight of hand-out’ Machiavelli would recommend. But the joker might be the biggest sycophant behind the scenes begging for a pick to keep his material lifestyle at a certain level of comfort.

  44. What reshuffle? The PM will find that it is almost impossible to make changes without damaging himself mortally, He cannot punish any of the 11 without dire and significant consequences to the body politic. They wil;l gang up against him. The fate of the 11 will be determined by the survival factor of the DLP. If you try to make any of the11 pay any price they will not condone the behaviour of the PM and they will exact the maximum revenge against a man who has always been weak politically. He cannot bring in anywone who is not goping to face the polls. If he did that , it would be madness and unthinkable. I do not expect any reshuffle , because if there is any attempt to reshuffle the consequences will be dire for the PM. He cannot appear to hurt the chances of the DLP. Stuart has been backed into a corner and he is not a fighter , I wish him well. Thnk on these things

  45. I agree with “true to form’s” analysis above. The major point is; “Stuart has been backed into a corner and he is not a fighter”

Your analysis paints a rather mediocre and “poor-rakey” picture of the political landscape and leadership profile of the country as if somebody has worked “obeah” on the place.
Can you imagine what’s in store for little Bim at a time when leadership ought to be the paramount ingredient in any recipe for getting us out of this economic and social morass and ought to be the guiding light to a better tomorrow?

  48. now you really made me laugh caswell! for that you get 4 stars.

  49. Some might say a PM who is financially well off with a pension to come as gravy is very well placed to state his position.

  50. The future of the DLP is of a greater and a more paramount importance than any apparent strength or lack thereof of the PM . Golding left after he said he was not leaving. There is a man called Seaga in Jamacian Politics who made the difference in Golding’s decision. Do we have a man who is of that influence who could make a difference in Stuart’s decision.? Is there a man who was in a similar position who could advise him on his next step? One thing that Stuart does not want to do is give the BLP the government on a platter. If they are going to win let them fight for it . Stuart will not aid them in any complicity. He will not hand them any victory and the people will not have the chance to accuse him like they accuse Sandy of giving away the government. Think on these things
