Mindful of all these opportunities, and as part of Government‟s programme to diversify its economic sectors to assist in further GDP development, we have decided to partner with authorities in the motor racing sector to set out a programme for the further development of the sport in Barbados.

To this end, Government will shortly approve an agreement to lease the Bushy Park Facility to the Barbados Rally Club to facilitate a full upgrade of the race track and adjoining facilities to international racing standards. Resources for this upgrade work are expected to come in part from the International Racing Federation (FIA). It is my understanding that Barbados is already the first country to have taken advantage of the FIA Institute‟s grant for facility development funding to improve race track facilities.

Extracted from the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposal for 2011

The above government proposal was listed in the just concluded budget presentation to which Gline Clarke, the member of parliament for St. George North had a surprising reaction which has evoked public comment. Clarke’s comment forced his colleague George Payne MP to issue an apology on behalf of the Barbados Labour Party. Tiredness was cited as the reason for the comment by Clarke .

Listen and be the judge.

  1. I don’t see any white people in politics, therefore politics in barbados is racist. I don’t see any white people in the police, therefore the police are racist, no white people in the BDF are you listening to what you are saying?

Just because there are no black ‘involved’ in a certain activity means its because of white supremacists? the same argument you are using can be applied to all aspects of this society, such as I have done above.

Glyne Clarke and the Barbados labour Party are starving to eat the fatted calf again. They are the elite of black socialist power hungry tyrants whose years of reign carved a big dent in the treasure chest down the road. Glyne Clarke knows what it is like to put his hand in the cookie jar and eat all the cookies for himself because after a few decisions, more cookies come again to fill the jar. I abhor any form of racism. I know that they are whites in this country come hell or high water who just do not like black people and who will continue to preach to their children that blacks are slack and whites are always right (bull shit). But Clarke the money that you have made like it turn you foolish. How the heck could you be so blatantly racist. The whites who are racist do not make that blatant.

Stop being self-righteous and deceitful. Persons like you know how to call attention to the poor black man, but fail to understand that you also distinguish the rich white boys. All of you that want to extend the lampooning of Clarke also show up an unwillingness to grapple with real issues. For many years persons in Barbados have been afraid to discuss ‘whites’ as if they too are not part of Barbadian society. You would rather speak about the youth; men; women; all of which are seen in terms of discredited blacks, but never against the privileges that appear skewed in favour of whites. No excuse for Clarke, but I am sure he has said what many were thinking. That is the hypocrisy; you would lampoon Clarke and possibly the BLP, but rather forget that pre-2008 election the same persons like you were shouting how the BLP is for the white people and big business. Maybe the tides have turned; maybe the BLP is connecting more with the ordinary masses of which the greatest proportion are very likely to be blacks.

  4. @Sunshine Sunny Shine (SSS): “Glyne Clarke and the Barbados labour Party are starving to eat the fatted calf again.

Assuming you are telling the truth, does this not mean that others are currently eating the “fatted calf”?

    @David and BU

Do you really believe that either political party would want me on their ticket or would I have to link up with Comissiong? Better yet, do you think that we would have a revolution that now takes in the lower and expanding lower middle classes that would need someone willing to fight on their behalf, and hence a new party?
I do not have answers; but it is beginning to feel that the only way I may have a positive impact is if I get in the fray and that has to be done through Parliament. Any ideas David? 85 % of the persons speaking to the budget were either out to sea or just never addressed the issues relevant to Barbados. Do you think that I should risk it all and run against Stuart, Arthur, Sinckler, Mottley, and all others? Let me take my tongue from cheek; do you think my time has now come to push those who are weak and unable aside in order to rescue Barbados?

  6. Slippery When Wet Avatar
    Slippery When Wet

I don’t think it was racist. I think it was a very well crafted and calculated political move which despite comments here, will resonate with alot of Barbadians. It will probably result in quite alot of votes in the next general elections, votes that may have traditionally gone to the DLP administration.

He was given an opportunity to retract those statements and he didn’t elect to do so, why?

  7. Can anyone tell me why Mr. Clarke, a former Minister of Government, who spoke on the behalf of 1/4 million people in the past, could not speak on his own behalf and offer an apology to the offended party? Is it that he feels that he did nothing wrong ? Why did a lawyer have to make the excuse on his behalf that he was tired and misspoke as result of his tiredness? Any Primary School child could have uttered those words.

  8. @George C. Brathwaite: “Let me take my tongue from cheek; do you think my time has now come to push those who are weak and unable aside in order to rescue Barbados?

    Sincerely, worth a try….

Please do note, however… It is now Friday night — most Bajans are now more concerned about getting laid than they are about their own long-term future….

  9. @George

Our sense check is that Barbados is not ready for a third party. For a credible third party to take root it would take a mobilizing event which would cause Barbadians to want to look away from the quo.

Failing the above you the candidate would have to benefit from personal appeal in the riding you select or the momentum of a national swing. However for this to happen you would have to find favour with party machinery and it is too late any way.

  10. George C Brathwaite: Not a chance in hell. However if Bajans ever favour losing their Bajan identity to become one Caribbean as you would like then maybe. lol! We aint fuhget you currying favour with de likes of Norman Gervan and other anti-Bajan caribbean elites a mere 2-3 years ago. I still got de audio clip of you speaking to a
    Jamaican radio station.

  11. Sayed

On the notion of there being no White people in politics, is this not an indication of the worthlessness of the whole exercise? In any event, did you ever wonder about the (over) proportion of Whites chosen as “Independent” Senators over the past twenty year in Barbados? I mean after all, how in God’s name are these people chosen and of course determined to be “Independent”?

  12. @ Sayed
I don’t see any white people in politics, therefore politics in barbados is racist. I don’t see any white people in the police, therefore the police are racist, no white people in the BDF …
    ——————————————————-
Sigh…Dude are u serious? What a nonsensical argument.

  13. Halsall

West Indians do not get laid … Thought you would have realized this by now. We percolate … Serious

  14. Wait. De man lie though???!!! In my humble opinion he was not. Why is it that as soon as any one touches the white Elite in Barbados, Nelson arises from his inanimate state.

Now if we were honest we would realise that those two ugly sisters – Colonialism and Corruption has the nation ins a sleeper hold. Come on people we have to face it to fix it,

This is the latest thing to add to the long list of Barbados Labour Party attributes.

Now we must add RACISM to, lying, stealing, corruption, lesbianism, homosexuality, wife beating, adultery.

  16. @Slippery when wet
    I concur 100%
The essence of the statement is true, it was just politically incorrect to word it the way he did (and in parliament and on tv at that). In any case he would have resonated with those who agree with him and share those sentiments….then the party has the excuse that an apology was made to sooth the feelings of those offended. In any case, the Caucasian class really doesn’t give two $h!ts about some off the cuff statement made by an almost retiring politician. Their money and power is already safely in the bank.

  17. I just get hey. Read enough to get the gist of the discussion.

I Hants believe Barbados has always been an “apartheid” country.
However Barbadians have found a way to coexist peacefully.

Over the years some of the “wealth” has trickled down to a large number of Black Bajans.

The reality is that Cattlewash,Blue boxcart are symbolic of the Bajan attitude to each other. You hang out wid your type and I wid mine.
” big bucks”, massive crowds of black bajans support these sports.

I believe there is a lot of money to be made from formula 3 racing.

Live and let live. You can’t force people to integrate. It has to evolve and Bajan white people have no intention of adding chocolate to their milk Bizzy and about 17 others excepted.

  18. @ Hants

How many white people you have as friends in Canada? And by that I mean people you visit in their homes and vice versa. Birds of a feather flock together.

  19. Birds of a feather should have been bred out of existence a long time ago …

  20. @Carson C. Cadogan
“Now we must add RACISM to, lying, stealing, corruption, lesbianism, homosexuality, wife beating, adultery.”
Carson, was it not your party that advanced the argument that the BLP was for the white people; that they were in bed with the rich white merchants, hence the reason why they could not bring down the cost of living; that they were selling land to the rich and famous to build golf courses so that rich white people could come here to play golf? Were not these statements racist, Carson?
Did not your party lie to the people of Barbados when they said that they would bring down the cost of living as it was priority #1, #2, and #3, yet nothing has been done as yet? Did your party lie about bringing integrity and freedom of information legislation within 100 day on coming to office? Your party has continued to lie, Carson!
What about Donville and the porn websites? Steve Blackett married his mistress, did he not commit adultery? Who is the minister of government that was caught by the maid in an embrace with a man, is this not homosexuality? Yuh forget Cammie, Carson?
Can the infelicities Marilyn Rice-Bowen revealed about Michael Lashley and the housing projects be considered as corruption?

People of similar attributes reside in both parties.

  21. well balanced commentARTAXERES and of course there is always little response to facts on this forum only speculation. thanks sargeant for the correction but at least from your response you seem to get the drift even if grudgingly.

  22. @balance

Hopefully you understand that people will have opinions and then you can critique as you see fit.

What are facts in this instance?

  23. I did not hear all of this hullabaloo some time ago, when Sir David Seale,Knight of St Andrew, not sure if he was a Senator at the time, said in public that only people with this (pointing to the colour of his skin ) is able to run business in Barbados. Was that a racist remark?
Like Enoch Powell, Gline Clarke ,no matter how distasteful it may appear, is echoing the sentiments of a not so silent large majority of people out there.

I am going to make sure that this is not forgotten.

I have it on tape and it will be very useful in the next general elections campaign.

I am going to use these words to hang them(Barbados Labour Party).

  26. Mr Lizard

I would much rather be a sad person than a dead one, yah Duppy! Three percent of a population after over five hundred years has no natural right to be still existing as a clan. WTF

  27. @CCC et al
Why is it that wunna cant get it understood that Bdos has an essentially One Party system with 2 factions bickering to influence the populace that there is a significant difference, which is PURE DECEIT. (true in the US et al)

For donkey’s years the Ds and Bs have made statements of a racist nature eg Sleepy use to lambaste whitey in one part the Pine but not pun the lighter side of the tracks. When one of his white friends challenged him on it he made it clear anything for VOTES!

Do you peeps realy believe that when an underpriveleged black person gets into politics and espouses a socialist agenda that it truly applies to them? They are very likely to be CAPITALISTS PERSONALLY but publicaly they pretend to care about POOR BLACK peeps for VOTES! It is their meal ticket to $$$$$$$$$! (also true of other races so dont even think that because I am white I am being racist)

Dey spouting shite and will drink an Extra Old with whitey 10 seconds later and ask for a fat donation at election time!

If Sir D made the remark about whites are the only good business people that is racist and totally untrue. Loads of rich dark peeps in Bdos. The problem with some “wanna be” black business men has been the desire to start at the top and we know that only gravediggers and utility pole technicians start dey eg successful black business man has a brother who starts a business and wants credit so he uses his brothers established connections BUT next thing brother buys a BIG CAR attracks another couple women and given his escalating costs and lack of effort the enterprise collapses WUHLOSS! This is a TRUE story that occurred 40+yrs ago and involves a very successful black family whose name all Bajans know. My family lost some serious $$$$ BUT the successful black family are still business connections and friends to this day. In the final analysis money is NOT black or white, and only a very ignorant white person would permit race to play a major role in business decisions especially in Bim with 95% of the market not white.

All the race talk is absolute BS for one simple reason, in Bdos..Whitey needs/depends on blackey and blackey needs/ depends on whitey. SO WHY WASTE TIME? LIVE WID IT!

    @BAFBFP

You are far too clever to ask how whites become independent Senators.
They running huge business enterprises that employing nuff peeps.

  28. Are black peeps supposed to dislike whites and vice versa?

If true then why so many of my black friends in Toronto married white women?

How come white Bajans talk race, then the next thing the white wife find out that hubby enjoying dark flesh pun the side for 30yrs? My great uncles and grandfather of 70-80 yrs ago were prolific village rams, indeed some very successful Drs, Lawyers were produced.

  29. facts david are pieces of truthful information to which you either cannot respond, or tend to ignore if they do not favour DLP positions.

  30. mr payne’s selfserving apology about mr clarke’s ill-timed much ado about nothing white boys comment only served to exacerbate the situation; mr payne should be instead apologising to the people of barbados for saddling us with al barrack and his shoody work.

  31. @balance

For the sake of balance why don’t you list those facts let us put them under the microscope.

  32. What a huge storm in a teacup! Eric Williams always believed that where there is no other argument to be made play the race card! So the Rally Club is full of (white) Bajans who pay taxes and have every right to assemble as they wish and I am not aware of any byelaws that state that anyone is denied membership by race or creed or anything else for that matter. To paraphrase a famous quote,”while I do not agree with what Mr Clarke has said I am prepared to defend his right to say it.”
The final decision will be made at the polls.

  33. So……….. BIG DEAL!! Can any one tell me candidly just what all the big hullabaloo is about? All yuh does really mek meh laff till ah want ta ded! So please tell meh,wey dese “white” peeps is be that all yuh talking bout in Buh-bay-dos? Fuh dah matter is there any 100% “white” or “black” hey in Bim? In any case wuh de Gline Clarke seh is simply what 95% of de res ah de Bajans does be thinking at any given moment! Ah lie??? So wuh de problem? Bidness as nusual hey in Baje land!

  34. First we were treated to the xenophobic outbursts of Owen Arthur during the January by election. Now another of Mr. Arthur’s loyal and progressive henchmen lets us into the racist ideology underpinning their new agenda. The BLP is definitely on the right track!

but in some part i agree with the members statements.who else could afford these cars to breck up in the beginning of this club only rich whites at that time.the rally club is not the only things owned by rich whites.
look at the boats and tourist shore excursions and see who mostly owns them?????????look at the hotels and see mostly owns them.
