Week-after-week, the Opposition Barbados Labour Party appears to be ending up with egg on its face.  It is as if, having reviewed its leadership, you would now be well advised to talk what that party is saying with a pinch of salt.

Let’s start with the By-election.  For almost 21 days, the BLP went across the length and breadth of St. John, trying to pull down Mara Thompson while telling the people to find her “unacceptable” because, in the BLP’s view, she is an “affront” to Barbadians. It therefore came as a real shock to Barbadians when on the morning she was being seated in Parliament, the very person who told the people of St. John that they must find her “unacceptable” and an “affront,” told the Parliament of Barbados that he wanted to extend his most sincere welcome to her, as a new member of the House of Assembly.  It is this level of political hypocrisy why people are joining the cause for a new politics in Barbados.

It was also at that point that it occurred to me that whenever a Barbadian has cause to look in your direction and say: “you ain’t have no shame at all,” you know that you have a very serious problem.  Is the leadership of the BLP now in the practice of trying to grab headlines?  Could it be that the new BLP leadership is slowly realising that it is not resonating with the people and is therefore attempting to jump onto ‘the Mara Thompson bandwagon’ in a desperate attempt to save face and regain, unrecoverable, lost ground?

Is the BLP only now changing its tune because it again finds itself on the wrong side of public opinion?  Tapes of the nightly meetings would show that even after being spoken to by two regional Prime Ministers, the leader of the BLP was adamant that he was not going to change his stance, that she was “unacceptable.”

Here is something else that is causing right thinking Barbadians to hold their heads in shame.  The new Leadership of the BLP is saying that it will not support any attempt to change the laws of Barbados to accommodate anyone person becoming Chief Justice.  No one was prepared for the shock they were about to receive, when a few days later, the person, whose name is being mentioned, was reported as having said that he was approached by the BLP member for St. Joseph (the new BLP leader’s deputy) while that member was serving as Attorney General of Barbados.  This is what I mean by “egg on its face.”

The Barbados Labour Party does not seem to recognise that even its members are turned off by this type of political hypocrisy and are calling for a new politics that is more humane.  But another day goes by and under its reviewed leadership – the BLP makes yet another mistake, while being too consumed with its own relevance and self importance to even realise that it is turning off too many people to fast (including its own base) with each passing day.

What Barbadians continue to find reprehensible, is the fact that the people now ruling the BLP are behaving as though they have done nothing wrong and have nothing to apologise to Barbadians for or be sorry about.  In some societies, that is called arrogance: the thin line between seeking consideration to serve or a person or group making the bold statement that he or they have a divine right to rule.

  1. To all those stupid statements regarding the rationale of Mr. Arthur welcoming the honourable Mara Thompson on her win and her first parliamentary sitting. It is prudent within our Parliamentary System for Government and the Opposition benches to welcome a new Government, a tributes or congratulatory messages to a new sitting member like Mara Thompson prior to the start of sitting. Hypocrisy is overruled in this context; so people like CCC and Rose should stop the personal vendetta.
In an earlier post, I mentioned our late Prime Minister fully believed in Family First. He loved his wife, children and mother to death and his behaviour showed that being in political life in Barbados is no bed of roses, thus, he would have never influenced anyone of “his hearts” to be engulfed in this political dog fight call politics. That is why I have a fundamental problem when HH stated that the proud David Thompson, the “family protector” entrusted him to influence Mara to run for candidacy for St. John. HH also mentioned that he was told to speak to his second daughter who could deal with the family while HH deal with ruling party’s “Big Wigs”. But we also heard another statement from his wife that David asked her to run. The truth lies speechlessly with the Late David Thompson. However, I will keep saying that political life will not be easy for a beautiful lady like Mara. She will be confronted sooner than later with Clico debacle and anything that the opposition fuel in order to get at the late Prime Minister. So the Honourable Mara Thompson, I pray and hope that your tenure will be political fulfilling minus the ravenous waves of political victimisation and the dragging and hurling of insults at you and your family. Peace be unto you and your family.

  2. @ac
When did Mr Mascoll became a liability to the DLP? Was it when Mr Thompson hurriedly resigned from being political leader but not opposition leader just after the St Thomas bye-election and had the whole party scrambling to find some-one to lead them? Was it when Mr Mascoll worked feverishly day and night for Barbados to start looking at the DLP as a viable alternative ?
Remember the Gems/Jaws episode when Mr Arthur was scotching because of the revelations?
Was he a liability when under his leadership the DLP moved from two seats to seven seats in the House of Assembly?
Was it when Mr Thompson hardly attended Parliament and gave no assistance whatsoever to him and the other members?
Was it when he regularly convened meetings of the Public Accounts Committee and the only one that Mr Thompson attended was the one where the public was invited and he did everything in his power to break up the meeting? No other PAC meetings have been convened since then not by Mr Thompson when he took back the Leader of Opposition position not by Ms Mottley not by Mr Arthur.
I guess he became a liability when the plan was hatched by Philip Greaves and Peter Morgan to remove him in favour of Mr Thompson when the Wickman Poll in 2005 indicated that the DLP would have won the 2008 election.
He was most likely a liability when the infamous and wrongly addressed letter to the Speaker of the House instead of the Governor General to remove him penned by Mr Sincker and Mr Sealy and hand delivered to Mr Lashley in the court yard for his signature.
He definately had little to offer the DLP because after his ousting Mr C Browne of Mr Thompson instructions asked if he would reply to the budget the next week on behalf on the DLP.

That along with what happened before at the death of Mr Barrow have me uneasy with the party I liked soooo much. Remember when Mascoll brought the no confidence motion against the BLP and Liz Thompson? Mr Thompson’s contribution to that debate was a reminder to the BLP when they are fixing road fix a few in St. John too, he said nothing on the matter before the house, but that is politics, though NASTY politics.

  4. Watching your boy Mascoll became a liability to the DLP when he refused every overture to bury the hatchet as David Thompson did and work with the party to beat Owen’s BLP. Mascoll was fooloshly stubborn and showed the world he is not a real politican and he had no vision. Observing the horrible tragedy that befellour beloved David Thompson your boy Mascoll would be PM today instead of involved in a rag tag campaign in St. John where BLP candidate lost his deposit. What a shameful debacle. It will take a minor miracle for Mascoll to revive the political fortunes he callously threw away by refusing to compromise and work with David Thompson and DLP. The DLP made Mascoll not the other way around. He turned around sold his soul to Owen and incredibly as Leader of the Opposition crossed the floor. History as the voters in 2008 will not be kind to Mascoll. He got what he deserved for his naive selfish rush for the fool’s gold offered by OSA.

  5. Permit me give an answer on behalf of AC. Clyde Mascoll became a liability peaches, when the leak was discovered . Plain and simple .You mentioned JEMS , which one are you refering to ? The one he criticized with the severity of an Opposition member , or is it the one he embraced with the zeal of a Co-Leader ?

  6. That posting was supposed to be directed to Peaches who is still watching.

I am not a fan of either political party but the BLP never pretended to be squeaky clean they are dirt dogs if you rolling with them you were well set.
DLP say they are crooks and blah blah blah i may or may not agree but if that is the case bring some justice to the people of Barbados we might possibly have more respect for you then.
If i was dem gangsters in the BLP i would of done mottley so to Mottley crew feel dem large she is disgusting sorry and if she was ever to be leader in an election time she would make her party loose election
I mean goodness we know how mottley stays n the real reason the BLP had to move her she should be glad that that talk aint all over this forum but man mia leaves alot to be desired and she is a gangster to so de men treat her accordingly

  10. HH I still do not understand

  11. The BLP bloggers on this blog and supporters like George Belle who said on by-election night that he was looking to see the amount of swing away from the government, all of you all are hurting by the mauling that the BLP got. Barbados is a part of this world that is going through the greatest recession the world as ever seen, and you all thought that Barbadians don’t know what is happening all over this world, today we had a protest in Egypt of all places. David Thompson came to office in all sincertity to make Barbados a better place and butt this recession, we still have so much to thank God for, somebody do still give you a breadfruit,a yam, some sweet potatoes or any thing else that they have, the majority of people still working, even all of those that was brought on in the government before you all where booted out, those crowds at the Dems meetings during the by-election, in parliament tuesday is troubling and worrying for you all, it still shows you Barbadians are still going with the Dems. The returning nationals and Barbadians are not the only ones disgusted with the gangsters and Owen Arthur, the elders of the party too. Sir Henry, should never have step aside for nobody that don’t have class and dignity. He get what he did not expect, and by the way ,nobody in George Street can tell me what to write on this blog, they don’t me .

  12. Should be they don’t know me .

  13. @ Watching—–No more time needs to be wasted on this “Political Stepney , for there is no conviction in anything he has said . That is the reality that everybody in Barbados is stating “. Not my words but they ring true today . When there were only two radio stations in Barbados , it took announcers and other personnel longer to make the transition from one to the other ,than it took this dedicated and commited leader to rewrite the pages of history . That a manager at KFC took longer to accept that same position at Chefette than it took Mr. Wickedleaks , speaks so glowingly to both his political and personal acumen that irrelevance should replace his middle name . While in George St. his every move required the sanction of Owen Mr. Inclusive Arthur . Well he sought sanction and inevitably found sanctuary . In this most public forum again I say THANK YOU OWEN . For today the dems are stronger and better positioned since the exit of Mr.Wickedleaks . To you my friend I say this . St.James South , St.Michael North West or St.Thomas , (another dig at poor Mia) in horse race jackass bound ta finish last . Peaches and cream to you as you keep on Watching .

  14. A lesson to Mascoll ; Remember a bird in the hand isworth a thousand in thebush. Mascoll reminds me of the dog, thebone and his shadow. No tears shed here.

  15. A very predictable response by the Hypocrite OSA gives to the Nation newspaper in reference to the 143thousand dollars remaining in the BLP account under MIA leadership. This man has no bounds. He is the Lizzie Borden of this century!Shamless Rat. Pretentious to boot! underminding! acting like he did not know that the article would be published . When it comes to deception . OSA wrote the book. For that it is worth he might have given the approval for the information be sent to the Nation since it would plant seeds of doubt in the minds of her suporters . OSA you need to come clean first because under your leadership plenty of thiefing was done! You rat!
