President Barack Obama

A recent poll in the US reported that 43% of Americans when asked “What is Obama’s religion?” still are unsure, with many still thinking he is a Muslim.  Let me keep it real for a moment, I’m not a betting man but it would not surprised me if we discovered that many of the unsure and still confused about Obama’s religion are those who have not gotten over the nation electing the first African-American President.

Many of these same folks who believe this nonsense of Obama being a Muslim which he has said repeatedly he is not, interestingly enough also blast him for being associated with the controversial Christian Reverend Wright as one of his followers. OK confused people which one is it?

Racism and religious bigotry in the US in recent years has had to find new ways to spew its venom, and from time to time raises it’s ugly head in very creative ways. What is also puzzling to me is that despite religious freedom being a founding principle in the US constitution, somehow its core meaning often gets marginalized.

The issue of Obama’s religion has regained momentum in recent weeks due to Obama’s public comments supporting the building of an Islamic mosque near ground zero in NYC. Obama had taken a constitutional stand on the issue that takes real courage in the face of such ignorance, and which lives up to the core definition of what freedom of religion truly means.  As someone who hates using the race, prejudice and blatant bigotry card sometimes it’s simply warranted.

This kind of ignorance reflected in the results of the poll is frankly scary to say the least. Those that attacked the US on 9/11 sought to change the way of life in the US, by no means should America let terrorist declare victory by causing the public to question core constitutional principles like freedom of religion.

  1. What is the problem?

Are these Americans who are voting Obama as Muslim illiterate or downright racists?

It seems the most recent poll has pull the number down to 24%, whoppeee!

  2. It’s okay to be Muslim anyway ..

“According to the T&T news media, corruption investigators found a treasure trove of documents, computers and business records. How much did Hafeez Karamath provide in “political donations” to Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley and other BLP politicians?

Some of that evidence is probably in those seized records.

Machine guns. Drugs. Illegal casino. Bribery of government officials in T&T. Kickbacks, bid-rigging and failed projects going back to the 1990′s. That’s Hafeez Karamath and his family. That’s the kind of people who Mia Mottley and Owen Arthur awarded Barbados Government contracts to.”

An interesting aticle just appeared over at Barbados Free Press, many Barbados Labour Party politicians must be shaking in their boots right about now.

  4. Mr Cadogan
We thank you profusely for reporting the above. But can you tell us if when you were at that source of you also saw this article?

No ambulance for Barbados accident victim – waits 2 hours on road
No ambulances, but we have some beautiful cricket pitches!
It has been three and a half years since UK tourist Olga Stewart died in the back of a Barbados taxi as she was being transported from Grantley Adams International Airport to the hospital. The ambulance didn’t come to the airport so she died as her desperate family and a passing taxi driver tried to save her.
At the time our government vowed that things would change, but like so many government statements this was only a PR response to an embarrassing moment. For our leaders it’s all about managing the fallout, not about really protecting citizens and visitors.
Gotta keep up appearances or those tourists might stop coming! Every time this happens the bigshots hold a few press conferences and talk about some new ambulances and scheduling but nothing is really done.
That’s the way it is with the DLP and the BLP politicians. Happens every time and, when they finally get around to talking about the latest “Ambulance didn’t come” story, we can predict what they will say. You can predict it too – just read a few of the old stories again.

Olga Stewart died in 2007 in the back of a taxi – No ambulance came
Today’s “No ambulance” victim is Mr. John Seale, a pedestrian who lay on the road for almost two hours after being knocked down by a car on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Seale was crossing the Princess Alice Highway from Barbados Tourism Investment Inc..
Think about it… injured man lying on the road in front of Barbados Tourism Investment for almost two hours and no ambulance. Now there’s an advertisement for foreign investment if we ever saw one!
For two decades our so-called leaders have concentrated on massive show-projects instead improving and maintaining the foundational infrastructure that used to differentiate Barbados from other Caribbean nations. They corruptly spend hundreds of millions on failed ventures like Hotels & Resorts, and award public housing contracts to friends and relatives. The political elites sip champagne at the UN, in Geneva and Beijing – while old women still haul water in pails like their slave ancestors before them and critically injured pedestrians lie on the road for two hours.
Time to vote independent, folks. Knock the DLP and BLP off their golden pedestals. Vote for anyone but the two old corrupt political parties.
No ambulance for Barbados accident victim – waits 2 hours on road
Would you say that this makes the DLP look very incompetent?

  5. chupse! No body told Obama to go against the majority Americans and their view of the propose building of a Mosque in downtown Manhattan. Look this is a nonsense poll. People are so pissed off with no Jobs, a tanking economy, and a President who has consistently gone against their opinions on several initiatives. Americans are really pissed at Obama and that is where I think this view captured in this poll is comming from. It is like if he can be so insensitive about the opinions of Americans they might as well return the favour.

  6. Excuse me for asking Adrian.
But who has proved that Muslims were responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
None of the alleged hijackers were on the flight manifests, indeed the BBC has reported that 7 of the alleged are alive and well.
The authorities have only one patsy, the 170+ times waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed ,”the mastermind” to pin their flimsy case upon.
    Is it not true?
    1

  7. ha ha ha ST you can ask all you want and believe what you will as well. My approach is to tune into the BBC “opinions” on events in England, as I tune into CBC for Bajan events. Life wise I prefer to go to CNN,NBC,ABC,FOXNEWS, and other American news entities for news on events in America. Truth is when I need analysis of geopolitical events I will stick with Stratfor.com. So with that I have no opinion of your comments above.

I will always believe that it is the height of stupidity for American politicians to make public, not one but three or four opinions of things that differ from the majority of persons from whom they get their mandate, and to do so without any willingness to win the argument. Maybe this is what is the norm in other social democracies, but not so in the American Republic.

  8. @Kiki

You are correct to opine there is nothing wrong with being Muslim.

What is wrong is to hear a President of the USA having to defend his nationality which has been proved otherwise.

It is also ludicrous that a country which is described as a melting pot of cultures and a land of the free would want to deny a set of people their legal right to worship where they want. Call their decision insensitive but the Americans have to be careful.

  9. Oh please! Did Obama ever say that he was a muslim? The Poll said STILL ;…meaning that inspite of this view he was elected president. If he would stop being so insensitive to the views of the people who elect him, maybe they wouldn’t be so insensitive towards him. Muslims are more integrated into American culture than they are, into Bajan culture. Clearly this Mosque situation has nothing to do with America being a melting pot, and is a testament to free will. That these people can be so deliberate in their actions inspite of the majority will, speaks volume about freedoms to be found in this country.

what careful what, they are thirty Mosques in NY city, the govenor of NY offered to find a building away from ground zero, the controversial leader of this propose Mosque is traveling the MiddleEast as a US taxpayed goodwill envoy the muslim world.

It shouldn’t be this easy to expose your bias.

  10. Adrian you should not the Americans who consider him a Muslim probably did not* vote Obama. These would be the Tea Party variety.

  11. I did not vote for him, I do not think he is muslim, am I of the Tea Party veriety?

Concider this. All the new England states plus NY voted for Hillary in the Democractic primary, but voted Democrat in the Presidential elections. Democrats and Republican incumbants in the US congress are facing a citizen revolt in the comming November elections. Is the Tea Party responsible for this? Is it likely that the Tea party consist of Democrats and Republicans?

  12. @Adrian

BU’s view on this matter is very simple. The US Constitution conveys to Americans certain freedoms. Do you deny these people their rights which are safeguarded in the constitution to build of their choice having observed all the legal requirements?

  13. It would have been a simple matter if if individuals of this religiuos sect were not involved in the destuction of TWC. Too close for comfort.

  14. @David
BTW Also religious actions and rituals can be limited by civil and Federal Laws.

  15. You are aware that there is currently no law preventing this project from going forward. That it is the people (Majority) who are venting their disapproval which they are entitled to do under the same constitution, that you are wanting to call into question. Please leave the US constitution alone, because in England or elswhere, the right of the majority to voice their disapproval would have been taken away by law to as they say to safeguard the right of the few.

The sooner he is out of the whitehouse the sooner we can move away from this silly social democracy experiment of his and the liberal elites. In fact I await the change in leadership comming to the house of representatives. It is never a good thing have both houses of congress and the white house in the hands of one party. Split it up, and let them fight to get anything legislated.

  16. @Adrian

You are on the ground obviously, it is your right to dissent. To many from the outside the debate is informed by a mindset of Christians vs Islam, East vs West. This is where the issue begins and ends.

  17. @David
Wuh David that means that the debate is informed by reality. Particularly the reality of the mindset of those who in their own words said they were at war with America, a decade or more before 9/11. I am saddened that you would want to simplify what is a complex web of deception.

  18. What is the purpose of the Muslims wanting to build a mosque so close to TWC a place where they were implicated in the desruction of thousands if innocent lives . Is this arrogrance or just a way of mocking the USA political system. Say what you think . In this case the american people have a right to vent their anger at those who are whsoe blatant and would bold facingly want to erected a symbol which would repeatedly only remind them of the muslim and their relation to that horrible day 911. Who are the Muslm leaders trying to fool!

  19. @David
They do have religious rights to practice , organize , but one does not have the right to build a place of worship wherever the choose .Their are rules and guidlines to follow.

  20. @David
Are you the same David who are against the rights of musicians using certain lyrics in their music because they influence the minds of the youth and also leads to the decay of the society? However in this case you have no problem with the Mosque being built so close to BTW a place of death and destruction which was brought about by Muslim extremist and whose leader of the said mosque is know to have similar views regarding the USA.

  21. @ac

Correct if necessary but didn’t the group observe all the local ordinances?

What does Bloombery have to say on the matter?

    @Adrian

From your last comment you have condemned all Muslims based on the behaviour of a fringe element?

  22. @David

I wonder if he would say the same if the similiar was attached to Israel. Mayor Bloomberg only at this point is seeing the harsh reality of saving NY ecocomy and he sees DOLLAR Signs and the possiblity of islamic business being the outcome . He is being a politician ” What good is in it for ME” . HE does not feel the pain and sorrow of the people who has been affected by it . As a Jew Has he forgotten their motto. WE will never forget” . It is not just about the building of he Mosque . It is more with their intent.

  24. If the American people can believe that Obama is a muslim they will believe anything. It is the anti Obama press and politicians at work trying to paint a very scary picture of him.

What amazes me is that the muslims in the west are allowed to worship and practice their religion without fear and harrassment. In the muslim countries, non muslims are not allowed to do the same, they are being murdered, they are treated as second class citizens with no rights. In these countries , the constitution does not allow the non muslims the same rights as muslims.

Mr Obama should know by now that 9/11 is a very sore spot for most North Americans and Westerners. He keeps shooting himself in the foot time after time with his lack of foresight. The proposed mosque near 9/11 will be viewed by the muslim world as a victory mosque. The west has been trying to appease this minority who has refused to integrate into western society. Many of them would like to see the west a muslim west. A religion that chooses death for anyone leaving it is not freedom of religion. It has no place in western society where freedom to choose and worship can be practiced without the fear and intimidation.

I cannot understand Mr Obama’s thinking. He attended church for many years listening to Rev Wright spewing hate sermons, never taking a stand against any of them. Yet he was forced to take a stand when it directly threatened his career by his association with Rev. Wright.

What kind of man is this Mr Obama? I see an opportunist, a slick talker like most politicians. I also see an indecisive politician who only makes decisions when cornered without much thought for the consequences. He wants to appear to be a nice guy, a cool president even though he seems not to be aware of what is happening on the ground. Like most politicians, he is a narcissist and I bet that his wife has more of a level head on her shoulders.

I also feel that many Americans want things to get better immediately, it takes time like most things. In the American way it should be overnight, instant gratification. President Obama had promised to fix it and it seems that his magic is not working fast enough. I do believe that anyone taking up the office as President of the United States has a very difficult job in these trying times, and that if it were John McCain or god forbid Sarah Palin, they would be getting their share of licks too.

Muslim ……NO! Keeps shooting himself in the foot….YES!

  26. To be honest this is a very intriguing story which has emerged in New York. As the head of the Executive arm of the US legislature it is difficult to understand how some are asking Obama to take a populist position which runs counter to the US constitution.

In the United States, freedom of religion is a constitutionally guaranteed right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Freedom of religion is also closely associated with separation of church and state, a concept advocated by Thomas Jefferson.[1]

The modern legal concept of religious freedom as the union of freedom of belief and freedom of worship with the absence of any state-sponsored religion

  27. @David
[From your last comment you have condemned all Muslims based on the behavior of a fringe element?]

Please tell me how you arrive at the question above

also did Americans insist that the President speak on this issue???? NY are telling him to butt out that it is a local issue. The president decided to host a Ramadan dinner at the white house and to address the rights of Muslims, which no one is disputing.

Their legal rights not withstanding, the decision is obnoxious, and insensitive.

  28. @Adrian

Agree with your last sentence above and that is the main point being made.

  29. The Constitution is a piece of paper. It cannot fight for itself, If Americans do not believe in it, it will become mere paper.
Most Americans wholeheartedly accept the Constitution as the law of the land. They may disagree about everything else. But they know they must not intentionally and knowingly act unconstitutionally. In that realm, they agree they should always do RIGHT. Not to do so is to challenge the basis of American government: THE CONSTITUTION HAS NO PROTECTION EXCEPT THE PEOPLE’S BELIEF IN IT.

….But what is the right thing? How do you know? Cicero in his book on duties gives an idea. First the right thing is what is legal, what is required by law, BUT BEYOND THAT, FOR THE LAW ITSELF IS NOT ALWAYS JUST, THE RIGHT IS WHAT THING IS WHAT IS HONEST, OPEN, AND FAIR. …. TELLING THE TRUTH, EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN AN OATH.

A history of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren

The IMAM behind this propose mosque is less than candid, let alone honest about their true intent.

You are playing with the cohesiveness of your society when you seek to be a society of laws only; not caring about honesty, fairness and the other requirements to keep citizens interest and belief in laws strong. Belief cannot be legislated. It is an act of the free will of the citizens and near-universal belief of this sort is required for both peace and freedom in a State.

  30. Man, I wish I could tell you guys what is really going on but you wouldn’t believe me.

  31. The leaders of this mosque contrversy had no good intentions. There only intent was that of to divided the american people. ‘So far that has not worked but with the recent statement by the president they have however suceeded in redefining Obama in a more negative way by his posturing to the Islamic world.
If there intentions were at all good. THey could have included a momument as a show of Respect to those who lost their lives.
As for Obama he retracted in part some of what he had said commenting about the wisdom of such a decision. At times “”Silence is Golden”

  32. Nobody is going to tear up the USA constituion because of these nut cakes, However the american people would not stand idly by and let them make mockery of it.

  33. The man is a Globalist, he is neither Muslim nor Christian nor your friend. He is a minion for the New World Order.

  34. You got it Sir.
The man is so confused he does not even know who he is, or what he is. He just takes his orders and looks stupid as everone wonders ” Why does he do that? Why didnt he that? …..and reasonably so.

  36. Barack Obama is a Guyanese! Put him on a plane and send him back home.

  37. I think this is the fault of the Guyanese. Barack Obama is a Guyanese. Deal with him.

  38. Adrian, you are making sense but you are operating in the absence of certain facts:

Check this article out and see if it suggests that any readjustment of your position is necessary:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/22/opinion/22rich.html?_r=1&ref=frankrich

I suggest that it is. In general, your position neglects to take into consideration the fact that what is non-controversial becomes controversial when your enemies get ahold of it, especially when one is a black American president.

I suggest that Obama has been an utter contortionist with regard to avoiding controversy, but there is only so much that he can do. When he doesn’t speak out, people call him a coward. When he does, you accuse him of courting controversy. When he doesn’t clarify, people say he is letting misunderstanding fester. When he does clarify, people say that he is flip-flopping.

Politicians can never please anyone; this is especially true of minority politicians in a racially bigoted country like the USA.

I don’t like Obama. He’s owned by the usual commercial interests, and he doesn’t seem to have any interest in making the kinds of large changes that I think are necessary. However, he doesn’t deserve the particular kinds of scorn that some people— including you— are heaping on him.

What he should really be doing is ending America’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, working to end the inhuman targeting of civilians in Pakistan, creating a coalition to fight the military-industrial complex, and working to reverse the growth of the American prison complex which incarcerates a larger proportion of the population than *any other country in the world*.

Obama deserves withering, persistent criticism for his failure to do the above things, not for a completely mundane position on a trivial community centre built by a man who was the darling of both Bush and Obama administrations, and a partner in the “American War Against Terror” until racism met short-term political expediency in the minds of a few loons with media attention.

Don’t buy into the crazy talk. Don’t swallow the insane proposition that Obama’s enemies would have no fodder at all! If he wouldn’t talk!

He’s semicastrated already; what you’re asking is for him to chop off his other ball.

  39. “What amazes me is that the muslims in the west are allowed to worship and practice their religion without fear and harrassment. In the muslim countries, non muslims are not allowed to do the same”

FALSE. You are referring to Middle Eastern dictatorships. In Asia, where most Muslims actually live, there are comparatively few such problems.

Most people make these statements from a foundation of sadly limited knowledge about Islam. Like most religious or secular institutions that are centuries old, there are some nasty historical aspects to Islam; but it is inaccurate and unfair to use these things as a basis for generalisation.

One might as well say that Barbados as a country can’t be rationally seen in a positive light because of its history of slavery and complicity with Anglo-American atrocity. There’s factual basis for that, sure, but most people would regard such a statement as nonsense nonetheless.

I am wary of people who make confident statements about other people’s intentions. Such people tend to repeat illogic and mistruth.

  40. How the “Ground Zero Mosque” Fear-mongering actually began:

    http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2010/08/16/ground_zero_mosque_origins

The project was green-lighted even by commentators at Fox News at first. Totally uncontroversial. Lauded, even.

  41. “He attended church for many years listening to Rev Wright spewing hate sermons”

Because they weren’t “hate sermons” at all. It’s hard to come to that kind of conclusion based on neutral analysis of his actual sermons. I can understand people feeling that way given the sound bites and excerpts that have been circulated by Mr. Wright’s and Mr. Obama’s enemies.

The Jeremy Wright controversy should be an embarrassment to right-thinking Americans. Whether we agree or disagree with Wright’s opinions or philosophies, the charges laid against him were politically motivated lies that were amplified nationwide because of America’s fear of the Outspoken Black Man.
