The following letter was received from Nicole Codrington which has been issued in direct response to a press conference given by the committee (reported in the Nation of 20 August 2008) charged with disbursing monies to affected families collected in the aftermath of the Arch Cot disaster:

I pray this letter reaches its intended audience, that is, the public of Barbados.

Last September, following the death of five Barbadians who died as they slept in their homes, you the public of Barbados opened your hearts and purses in a tremendous gesture of goodwill by way of the media relief fund telethon. During the telethon, interviews of surviving relatives were shown which I am told evoked much sympathy and philanthropy. To date, Donavere’s immediate family and sons Doniko Kyo Codrington, age 6 and Zavier Brathwaite age 4 have not received any funds or assisistance from that fund.

All of Donaveres’ possessions inclusive of furniture, vehicle and extensive electronic equipment needed to run his business were lost at Arch Cot, that fateful morning. Imagine if your home disappeared right now, there is no dollar figure that would be sufficient. As an appointed government worker since 1997, there are several benefits and gratuities which should have been made available to Donaveres children. This has not been done.

Only three organisations have made any provision for those two small boys: Chefette Restaurants who set up a fund which distributes $2000 a year, the Broad Street Taxi Mens Association which donated $600 last September and the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School which donated $500 last December. No other funds or insurance monies have been received by the Codrington Family, at any time.

The Codrington family was misled when it took part in interviews and activities related to that telethon.

My brother Donavere lived all his life in Westbury Road, St. Michael. He had moved into that apartment a mere week prior to his death, the children had visited that apartment for the first time the night they perished. For the Codrington family there is nothing to commemorate at Arch Cot. Further no member of the Codrington family will take part in any activities relating to any commemoration at Arch Cot.

We had remained silent in our grief for too long. Further we urge the Barbadian public not to be fleeced of any more monies in the name of the Codringtons. We have not received any monies, we have been told point blank it was not for us. If you made a donation to the telethon on our behalf we thank you for your kindness and generosity, seek up on it.

Fortunately, the Lord has blessed us daily in that we are able to provide for Donaveres children. They do not lack for anything.

Nicole A Codrington

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

    Welcome to Barbados!

  2. This is disgraceful.

Noel Lynch and Dale Marshal were strutting all over the place last year basking in the spotlight – and then what?

Any time money is linked to members of the Barbados Labour Party – then things go awry.

Noel Lynch and his committe said the money collected would be put in a trust for the remaining children.

Recently I heard a voice sounding like Jewel Forde announcing that the money collected from the media telethon will be distributed.

What the hell is going on this place though?

  3. Not to seem callous but other people were affected besides the Codrington family, they were other families that were displaced as well, what about them, they have to be housed also, some of them are being housed in temporary situations. What should be done is to contact Freundel Stuart he is the attorney general and isn’t he the minister for the area I would love to hear what he has to say regarding the situation.

Not to seem callous but other people were affected besides the Codrington family……

    Not callous at all.

    THE NINTH COMMANDMENT

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor’s.

Barbadians, must make noise to make sure that the money gets to the intended persons.

…Americans gave generously in the aftermath of 9/11, to the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks, and most of the collecting charities and agencies had the most difficult time parting with what was not theirs. Do not let the Barbadian counterparts of the American covetous minded persons get away with this.

A fellow Barbadian who lives in the US, on reading about the little Barbadian girl, born with cleft lips and who was abandon by her parents , resulting in the Grandmother assuming legal responsibility for her , called to Barbados and made direct contact with her, and proceeded to channel her donations directly to the intended person. The only person in the entire world that I would donate money too on behalf of some needy cause, other than the directly affected,.. is Auntie Olga. Not a another fella.

  6. I was led to believe that the drive was orchestrated to help the Arch Cot families including the displaced ones, those affected by the Joe’s River crash and also the Depeiza and Smith families who lost their love ones in Mullins.

  7. We need full disclosure on this one, including
    (1) Did the Codrington family make a request to the trust for funding?
(2)If so, what specifically was requested?
    (3) What precisely was the response from the trustees?

Here is part of what is reported in today’s Nation, quoting Jewel Forde, PRO for the Barbados Media Disaster Relief Fund:

“Forde added that they already paid out around $54,000 to five families affected by the Arch Cot disaster and three people involved in the Joe’s River tragedy to help cover legal fees, medical bills and the cost of tools to restart businesses”.

“She said the trust had provided money to cover the costs of medical bills, supplies and nursery expenses for Doniya Codrington, now over a year old, whose parents and siblings died at Arch Cot”.

  8. Question to the trustees would be did everyone make good on their pledges, I read in the nation that in 2007 a mechanic received $94,000 from the trustees, how true is this

  9. These are unnatural deaths.

Like all the ones before them, they require a coroner’s inquest.

There must be due process followed.

Why were houses permitted to be built at the location?

Who is responsible for giving permission?

…. Welcome to Barbados, ….. I agree……. and Remember Carew? Did he get his inquest?

I think something happened but I can’t really remember exactly what. Does anyone remember?

Whatever happened everybody knows the perpetrators did not get their just desserts.

If we treat life so cheaply, when our turn comes, it will be no different.

  10. i think some pepole just like to make a noise and ms codrington is always that person

  11. The Codrington family was directly affected by the Arch Hall tragedy. Barbadians donated to the fund with a clear expectation that this family especially would have benefited. Is this an opinion that is shared by the BU family?

  12. Adrian Hinds

Giving to Aunty Olga might not be as safe as you think.

Most persons in the know will tell you that.

  13. When persons such as myself donated, the donation was with the view that ALL persons that were affected by the tragedy would have been compensated, of course the level of compensation & help would vary but…… it should have been forthcoming. Whom ever is the legal guardian for Donaveres’ kids should have received help.

I also saw the photo in the nation about the mechanic whom received the cheque (can’t remember the amount) to buy back tools to get his business restarted.

    Justice delayed, is justice denied!

“The fund has been set up to assist families and communities across Barbados in cases of disaster.

It came about as a result of recent tragedies which claimed 15 lives in about a month.

These included the accident involving a coach at Joe’s River, St Joseph, on Sunday, July 29, when six people died; another multiple death accident at Mullins, St Peter, on Emancipation Day, August 1, which claimed the lives of four members of the Depeiza family; and the August 26 cave-in at Arch Cot Terrace, Brittons X Road, St Michael, which resulted in the deaths of five members of the Codrington family.”

    The telethon held

    has so far raised

    $416 927.16 of the more than $515 000 pledged.

Marketing and corporate communications officer of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and

a spokesperson for the media group, Diane Forte, said the fund was moving swiftly to the point where it could be of tangible assistance to those people seriously affected by the Arch Cot Terrace tragedy.

“The process of setting up a trust is very involved, but we are happy to say that we have selected the trustees. As soon as the trust is registered, the next step will be the trustees finalising information on the specific needs of the affected persons so they can begin the fund disbursment,”

    she said.

The trustees will seek guidance from the relevant Government ministry,

    she added.

“The Barbados Media Disaster Relief Fund will be administered by the trustees who will use their sound judgement, guided by the respective ministries who have been collating data from the displaced families, to lend assistance to those affected by the tragedy

at Arch Cot Terrace in the first instance,” said Forte.

“Any remaining funds will be held in trust in

the FirstCaribbean bank account or other such account as the trustees may from time to time determine and may be used to assist families

    or communities affected

    by major tragedies

or disasters, or to provide relief from distress caused by such disasters or other catastrophes,” she added.

Can anyone be held accountable for the cave in?Has any community minded lawyer assisted the family in seeking compensation?
Where is the owner of the apartment building?
    Was the building insured?
Was this an “act of god” caused by the ignorance of men (owners, planners and builders)?
In any event I think someone should be held liable, five humans lost their lives, three of them children.

  16. We have a tendency in Barbados to reward the remedial effort while forgetting the cause of the catastrophe. The prison burn down is another example.

“USUALLY, media houses rival each other for advertisement space, readership and listenership, but on Saturday night they all came together with one purpose in mind.

Competing newspapers, the Nation Publishing Company, the Barbados Advocate and Heat, and rival electronic media houses Starcom Network, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Mix FM put their differences aside, and in a great humanitarian gesture, raised money for the Barbados Media Disaster Relief Fund, as part of the Barbados Cares – The National Response drive.

The fund has been set up to assist families and communities across Barbados in cases of disaster.

It came about as a result of recent tragedies which claimed 15 lives in about a month.

The four-hour telethon began promptly at 8 p.m. at CBC, The Pine, St Michael, and at last count had raised $515 453.80. Donations can still be made over the next two weeks at the fund’s account at FirstCaribbean Bank International.”

i think some pepole just like to make a noise and ms codrington is always that person……

Yes Ms. Codrington sat down with her family yesterday and collectively wrote that letter as a letter to the Editor of the Nation. Not sure if it would be published as have happened in the past, the letter was forwarded here to Barbados Underground.

Ms. Codrington and her family has lots to make noise about. The problem is not that funds, $54 000 according to Jewel Forde has been disbursed, the problem is that apart from milk and diapers to baby Donnia, none of Donaveres other children have received anything. But most persons out there assume that they did.

In addition, several women appeared out of the blue after Dons death claiming he was the father of their child, (an Antoinnette among them), resulting in Donaveres legitimate children which he acknowledged and brought home and named his businesses after (DZY Rentals and DZY Computer INC, [Doniko, Zavier, Yashiro and later Donnia]) having difficulty acessing the death benefits at the NIS while officers at the NIS investigate these bogus claims.

The Codrington family has kept silent all this while but these issues resurfaced with the hosting of the chain link at Arch Cot.

My family had no intention of attending and this was communicated quite early this year to the organisers. It was the organisers who decided to look into the matter of the funds as they themselves had made donations.

Our aim is one and one only, TO LET THE PUBLIC KNOW THAT IT IS NOT OUR FAMILY AND BY EXTENSION DONVERES CHILDREN WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MILK AND PAMPERS WHO HAS RECEIVED THE FUNDS FROM THE TELETHON.

Both the Linton and Codrington families this week paid out over $1100 to have commemoration notices in the paper for Donavere, Cassandra, Shaquille, Shaquanda and Yashiro. We by the graces of God are all gainfully employed (Amen). However countless people still stop me on the streeets and say I gave a donation for you…..and all I can do is smile and say thanks.

  19. UNDERTAKER

I too was shocked when many, many years ago persons who worked with her (aunty olga) in the media field told me personally that monetary donations were sometimes spirited away.

I suppose used clothing and used appliances, bed etc would be a different story.

Since then I have heard the story repeated over and over again by the average Joe.

The problem is many of us would be quite willing to believe the story if it was a poor black bajan doing the same thing, but we have created this aura of ‘perfection’ around aunty olga that just does not fit the reality.

All I am saying is yes continue to give clothing and household effects to help the poor, but don’t be naieve when giving money and yes laud her for that service she is doing but be as observant as you would with anyone else.

Human beings are fallible creatures, yes even aunty olga.

With such a general yet wide reaching mandate, this fund’s finances is ripe for malfeasance. Such funds (taking money from the public) should be govern by laws, which amongst other things should require it’s trustees to provide audit statements, publish in the local media. This can deter more Barbadians from giving and ultimately hurt the needy and the vulnerable in Barbados.

I can personally vouch to “Auntie Olga’s” reluctance to use the funds in her organization to help illiterate children.

  22. Nicole,

I say to you again that full disclosure is needed:

    (1) Did the Codrington family make a request to the trust for funding?
(2)If so, what specifically was requested?
    (3) What precisely was the response from the trustees?

  23. The love of money is the root of all evil, we have to be careful when presented with the promise of a windfall or access to large amount of funds.

I have a few questions though.

Was the telethon specifically put on to raise money ONLY for the Codrington family?

What is the Codrington Family’s expectations from this whole catastrophe?

Have they sought legal counsell to get the money that they believe they deserve?

If the remaining members of the family is gainfully employed, how long will they expect the Trust fund to support Donvere’s children?

How can the Codrington family be so sure that the claims now coming of additional children is so “bogus”?

I hope that this tragedy does not turn in to a lucrative endeavour for everyone except the children of this man and the other families that were sorely affected.

  24. Warrior // August 21, 2008 at 11:19 pm

The love of money is the root of all evil, we have to be careful when presented with the promise of a windfall or access to large amount of funds….

Man to man is so unjust….There is more in the mortar than the pestle….. Though hand join in hand the wicked should not be unpunished….A soft answer turneth away wrath…

    I know Bible verses too

The telethon is for everyone affected by a tragedy in Barbados as deemed necessary by the trustees.

It is the then government and media of Barbados and not the family that decided they would set up a trust fund. The Codrington family had no expectations and still have none.

Its is the persons who donated to the fund who are under the wrong impression of where their money went.

We simply want the Barbados Media Relief Fund and any subsequent fund set up in times of disaster and emergency to be transparent and fully accountable to those persons who pledged their money and support.

To warrior, I am not sure who was presented with the promise of a windfall…specific statements were made …see the Katrina Bend articles above….pictures of the Cave In even made a certain manifesto unknown to the family because the Cave In was a national public event…at the time a lawyer had informed us that we could not stop people from using our families name to collect money.

I challenge any reader out there to name the Codrington that went out there asking anybody for money.

To many this is just another story on a blog…. but we will continue to bear the lost of a Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, Father and Mother.

It is sad, very sad that issues of money will again overshadow the root cause of these senseless deaths and pertinent questions like why was the official date of death 2 days after the cave in…what caused the cave in…. why so long for an inquest…..who owned the apartment…who was carrying out extensive drilling on the land behind the apartment…I am beginning to wonder if it isn’t a carefully crafted conspiracy to distract and detract.

And did I read in todays paper that we will have an annual chain link and will incorporate entertainment…. GET REAL.

    (Last post)

  25. “we are able to provide for Donavere’s children. They do not lack for anything.”

“we have been told point blank it was not for us.”

    Dear Nicole:

My condolences on the loss of your brother and some of his children. However

If as you say Donevere’s children Doniko and Xavier lack for nothing then how was it that your family requested money from the fund, and so were told point blank…

I don’t think that it is the intention of any insurance, or fund to provide extras to people who”lack for nothing.” The intention of such funds is to insure that people are not impoverished by tragedy. Your family suffered a great tragedy, but you yourself has told us that Doniko and Xavier have not been impoverished and in fact that they “lack for nothing”

If Donavere was an appointed government worker then of course the children should receive benefits from National Insurance etc., but since the children are minors then one of their adult relatives will have to claim on the children’s behalf. If Doniko’s and Xavier’s mother(s) are alive and resident in Barbados then I believe that it is up to the mother(s) to claim on behalf of the children who have lost their father. In the normal course of things even a loving auntie such as yourself cannot make this claim unless the mother(s) elect not to claim on the child’s behalf and has granted custody of the children to you.

However if the cave-in was caused other than by a natural disaster the surviving family members including you may have to get hire a legal firm to represent you and to make a claim against such people as may have contributed to the cave in.

  26. “In addition, several women appeared out of the blue after Don’s death claiming he was the father of their child, (an Antoinnette among them), resulting in Donavere’s legitimate children… having difficulty accessing the death benefits at the NIS while officers at the NIS investigate these bogus claims.”

But NIS has to investigate these claims. And we can’t know whether they are bogus or not until the investigation is complete. It is not unknown in our society for men to acknowledge some of their children and to refuse to acknowledge others. If however there are other children out their then NIS must do a thorough investigation and pay any benefits due to ALL Donevere’s children even (and especially) those children who may turn out to be his and whom he had not acknowledged.

Because DNA is now available the need for a man to “acknowledge” that a child is his or not his has changed tremendously.

What do you think would happen if DNA tests showed that an acknowledged child was not Don’s while an unacknowledged child was?

  27. Nicole Codrington

I understand what you are saying.

I am much more concerned about the money noel lynch set up a trust for the surviving baby.

Are the 2 other children included in that and have they been in contact with you,as I understand it that was supposed to be government money and the grandmother sheila linton seemed then to be playing a starring role.

    Politically Incorrect.

I know too that on this blog you can’t say too much sometimes, but I understand the point you are making about Aunty Olga not giving to these illiterate children.

Bajans too love a straight hair and fair skinned person – they will give way dey mudder and all for dese kinda persons without askin’ a question.

  28. Nicole Codrington, I acknowledge that your last post will be you last post.

However I must remind you, that whilst your responses are acrimonious and combative you were the one who chose this forum to make this a matter of public interest and therefore subject to public scrutiny.

Some people will agree with your stance, some people will not, some people will support your stance and your position whilst others will not.

Be assured that my statements were not an attempt to play Bible boxing with you, and only and attempt pinpoint that some human beings behave in certain ways when presented with certain circumstances and the statement was not directed towards you, my apologies if you took offense.

I would expect that losing family members in such a tragic way would take some time in getting over so, I would hope that you and your family will soon get through your time of grief.

I believe that from you little letter the public of Barbados would have been duly warned to be careful how and to whom they are donating their monies.

  29. Warrior, people keep thinking that time heals all. My mother died in her late 70’s of cancer. I have not gotten over it yet and don’t think that I ever will. The particular manner in which Nicole lost her family and the number of persons is even more horrific.

Time may ease the pain somewhat but I guarantee you that it never really goes away.

Furthermore, I did not find her comments acrimonious or combative at all. She simply wanted to make a point. It cannot be easy for her and other relatives to be accosted all the time by people telling them that they donated to their cause, especially when they did not receive any money.

Give it a rest out there, folks. The Codringtons do not need to be reminded at every turn of their deceased family. Let them start to heal. They are already dealing with a lot more than any one family should have to deal with.

Somebody in the Town Planning office really needs to be held accountable for what happened and we also need some transparency about how the money collected is to be distributed.

  30. We made the point earlier and we think it is worth repeating. Barbadians participated in the telethon and other fundraising activities because there were driven by the accident of those who died in the Arch Cot tragedy. It seems only right that the immediate family of those who perished should as a matter of decency and priority benefit from the fund.

    It is what Barbadians expect!

    **************************

Why do we continue to practice a culture of deprivation on our own? This is especially true of people who are given authority over something… Because they think they are in control they must Lord over it. Discretion is not a whim and fancy assignment but designed to give flexibility.

The problem is that the same people who practice this culture of deprivation don’t like it to happen to them, but when it is in their hands they get judgmental.

Responsibility comes with a duty. Donors gave money with expectations that their money would go to one person or the other. I bet some would even have written a note saying where or to whom they want their money to go to. Of course a committee with responsibility for disbursement has a responsibility to give the money where it is donated.

If I was a contributor to the fund and was told that the Codringtons can’t get none, I would want back my money and don’t fool your foot, I will get back every cent on the legal basis that my money was not being used for the purpose for which I contributed it and, therefore, I would encourage everybody that donated to do the same thing and then go and take the money personally to whom you want to give it; simple.

Let me close with this story and the reason for telling it. A UN worker and I, back in 1994-1995 went on a search for people in poverty in Barbados. There was a house which I knew to have about 15 people living in it; a very elderly lady, her children and grand children some of whom seemed mentally challenged.

When we got near the house and the worker saw it, he told me not to speak and that he will do all the talking. Actually, he was testing a theory that many people in poverty do not understand that they are, or consider themselves to be in poverty but the stark reality is, they are in poverty.

On reaching this one roof house, (a mere 15ft x 12ft), he hailed the old lady and told her that he was looking for a poor lady (and describing the house in front of him and condition of the children and grand children) who lived in this area in a small one-roof house with about 15 children and grandchildren. He then asked her if she knew anyone like that.

The old lady paused, looked into her leaking roof and said; “No, I do not know anybody like that around here.” Of course, he was dumbstruck.

The point is that the Codringtons are not wealthy people and it will take an enormous contribution from them and close friends, who themselves are not wealthy, to take care of those children. So the statement that they lack for nothing is not real. They must lack for something. Even if the speaker believes they lack for nothing, I think this was an intended slap in the face of the person(s) who is denying the family some help.

This family needs help and I think the the managers of the fund should eat their pride and give the children some money. It is not theirs and was given for the family (inclusive), not for some tradegy down the road that ain’t happen yet.

  32. Dear Rok:

    Good argument. Point taken.

  33. Nicole girl, I am sure this blogging thing has been an experience for you. People who don’t know you make all sorts of judgements about you.
I agree with your stance of not planning to post again. I commend to you Psalm 37. Fret not yourself because of evil doers. (Read the whole Psalm)
Also continue to look to the hills from which your help (and my help ) comes.
Best wishes and take life a day at a time; if that is too much take it a minute at a time.

  34. Hey J! I am grateful for that response.

  35. Right, enough!!!

I thought the issue was very clear from what Ms Codrington outlined in her letter.

But for those of you who just DIDN’T GET IT, here it is again:

NONE OF THE CODRINGTON FAMILY GOT A SINGLE DOLLAR FROM THAT FUND SO IF YOU THOUGHT YA HARD EARNED MONEY WAS GOING TO HELP THE KIDDIES – YA WRONG!

    Got it ????????

  36. Plus, if Nicole sound vex, she has a right to be!

I happen to know that the Barbados Media Disaster Relief Fund would have been set up by some of Nicole’s former colleagues.

Is there any loyalty in Bim?

  37. GOD IS GOOD MS , TRUST

  38. I AM SORRY FOR ALL THAT HAD HAPPEN . U HAVE TO BE GRATEFUL MORE SOUNDS TO ME LIKE U ARE QUARRELIN NICOLE
PLEASE STOP IT AND WAKE UP HAVE A NICE DAY

  39. I think Nicole C. does not fully understand the Public Service Act, based on her comments “… As an appointed government worker since 1997, there are several benefits and gratuities which should have been made available to Donaveres children”.

If Donavere was appointed, he would only be entitled to gratuity when he retired from gov’t not in case of accidental death. His pension would have been for his benefit only when he retired also. the only way that the family can legally be entitled to his pension was if he had submitted a resignation letter dated sometime before his death or if he was at retirement age and had already completed and submitted the forms – otherwise that money is gone. The children can only received money from the ‘Widows and Pension” if he had ever contributed but alas that fund was discontinued years ago. those children who still received money from it are children of men who made contributions years ago before it was discontinued. I think there is some other fund from the NIS that the children may be entitled to receive but their care givers should check there soon because, I think there is some a time limit to claim (I think 15 months) – they would then receive this until 18 years of age or until they have completed their tertiary level education. They should also check with the Registration Department, I am not sure which section but I know some children receive some kind benefit from them as well. I hope this helps

  40. It is a distasteful that a family which perished in such a tragic circumstance and one which the Crown should easily take responsibility should be squabbling in the way presented above. The Arch Hall tragedy requires that we toss the rule book through the window and replace with new rules. Do we so quickly forget those feelings which overwhelmed us at the time?

  41. I’ve tried very hard not to make a comment about this issue but
Nicole you are sending mixed messages to the public. Here you stated:

    1. Pledges were made and your have not received any monies…. YET

    2. Your family lacks nothing

Help me to understand what you are trying to say and your argument.

  42. @sweetness
Not everything on earth can be explained with simple logic. She obviously has her reasons whether she says them or not. We often get tied up with what our duty is and the emotion that people express out of frustration.

I am sure that if she was as intelligent and logical as you she would have said it differently and more effectively; we are too judgemental and the only thing that leads to is marginalisation, discrimination, stigma and disenfranchisement.

The only thing to understand is that this family needs help. The mixed messages is also a sign of that.

  43. But realise that not only the Codrington were displaced and whatever monies were donated should have been share among all. We all know that in situation/s like this “help” is very slow in coming.

  44. She is saying that the Media exploited the relatives and residence to milk Barbados then did nothing to help those who lost everything
