I have ave read recent reports in the daily news paper regarding court decisions relating to sexual assault and rape of women including teens.I cannot but express my revulsion over the apparent soft and pampered glove treatment given out in sentencing.
Sexual assaults on women especially teens is degrading and dehumanizing and should be taken seriously. It’s an assault on the fabric of decent emerging society who depends on a government legal system for protection.
Sentences must be designed as a deterrent and denunciation, not regarded as a social inconvenience when fines are imposed in its place. The prevalence of these offences and the soft sentences demonstrate a view, no doubt contributes to outdated legal understanding of the traumatic impact in rape and sexual assaults.
Imposition of fines does not offer a deterrence or hardly a denunciation of these offences but rather an appearance of prostitution. Victims should not be made to feel that they have been prostituted, money for sex is.
Fathers, mothers and women have to speak out and get organised. Your daughter or sister could be next.
