Prime Minister Mia Mottley shows off a Kensington Oval ready for T20 World Cup

Dear Editor,

Last Friday (July 12), the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ordered President David Granger and his Cabinet in Guyana to resign immediately from Government and call elections within three (3) months.

This now seven-month elections’ delay has clearly brought out the political and ethnic biases of academics in Guyana such as Dr David Hinds who is also a member of the ruling coalition Government. It seems that the two Davids think alike in their insistence that the illegal government should remain in power.

At a history conference in Guyana two weeks ago which I attended, Hinds again showed his ethnic biases. He gave the feature address on the topic of Dr Walter Rodney, whom he described glowingly as a “black nationalist” and “a Pan Africanist.”

Hinds pointed out the marginalisation of certain groups such as Rastafarians in the Caribbean but did not utter a word about the alienation or tokenism of (East) Indians in regional institutions like the very CCJ, CARICOM, the Caribbean Reparations Commission, etc.

During the Questions and Answers (Q and A) session, I asked Hinds why he spoke about trade union leaders such as Tubal Uriah “Buzz” Butler and not mention even once the name of Bhadase Sagan Maraj, Adrian Kola Rienzi (Krishna Deonarine) or Basdeo Panday.

I also asked Hinds why he spoke about Guyanese and Trinidadian icons such as CLR James, Makandal Dagga, Eusi Kwayana and George Padmore and not even once mentioned the name of Cheddi Jagan or VS Naipaul, the only Nobel Prize laureate from Trinidad and Tobago.

I also asked Hinds why did he talk about cultural creations in the Caribbean such as calypso, steelpan and ska and made no reference to chutney music as well as “doubles” street food or the curried “sour” sauce and “puri” roti from Guyana.

Hinds replied about not having enough time to mention everybody [Indians particularly] in his hour-long address. Pity these people who claim to be objective academics and political scientists in the Caribbean.

  1. The Indian nationalists in Guyana are at it again.

The real problem, unlike what these rabid Hindu nationalists and others are saying, was and is the absence of a voters’ list as consistent with the Constitution. This level of inefficiency is not inconsistent with regional systems of governance.

Mahabir has never mentioned the vicious nationalism of Indians, the racism of a dominant Indian religion, the per capita economic domination by Indians in nearly all Caribbean countries, how they use Black people to serve they their own ends, either

Their misguided general assumption that there is some equalization between the price paid by African peoples and Indians. Africans were here in both epochs long before Indians.

We were here over 100,000 years ago in the first epoch as can be evidenced in Brazil by the French anthropologist Pessis and elsewhere by other academicians not controlled by time and space as most are.

And within the slavery and then the later indentership epochs we were here and paid a much higher price than Indians for these lands.

There is therefore no equalization between these histories.

Indians everywhere must come to know than the African is his mother lest they be brought to heel!

  2. @Pachamama

Isn’t it intellectual dishonesty for Dr. Hinds to omit mention of Indian players in his speech?

About the election how can the court in all practicality mandate elections to be held by a specific date if the apparatus to support free and fair elections has not been mobilized?

  3. David

It always seem to fall be Black people to be inclusive. We have never detected that level of equalization being demanded from Indian nationalists.

    NO!

The Indians live their lives, centrally, without reference to our sensibilities and therefore no such bar should be mandated for Hinds either. Hinds should speak how he see the world.

Remember, Hinds himself was once a political lackey of the Indian nationalist prime minister Jagdeo. And for a man who was once marked as a successor to Burnham we see this article by this fecker Mahabir to serve similar aims.

    On your second question

The answer is that courts do what courts do. And a government can only do what it can. Neither one has absolute authority over the other, in your terms.

  4. @Pacha

On the service there is nothing wrong with your perspective BUT in a country torn by political and RACIAL conflict there must be leadership to move forward. Who will bell the cat if Guyana is to turn the corner to build a quality society?

  5. David

    We would like nothing more.

The problem is that everywhere we’ve been it is only Black people who fecklessly believe in that mantra, while everybody else takes us for a ride, as though we’re ignorant.

For example, we did not see any Africans in Indian with a development curve matching that of the Indians with suitcases, salesmen, who descended on Barbados when this writer was a boy.

  6. This vile man is at it again, and on a black-focused blog. His arguments are beneath contempt.

  7. David

    Sorry!

Should have been Walter Rodney, from the WPA, to whom Hinds was seen as to be a successor to.

  8. Vincent Codrington Avatar

This author would show less bias if he practices what he preaches. Hinds can only speak from his experiences with a measure of validity. He cannot pretend to know the other ethnic groups. They are not very open.

  9. What is positive is that a Chairman of GECOM was finally appointed.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    It serves black people right!

It is the black people who have and are still turning Dalit East Indians into ‘buy-and-sell’ millionaires and the modern socio-political movers and shakers in the Caribbean.

Can you imagine a modern-day situation where educated blacks are now the servants and house-cleaners of Dalits!

The East Indians are just waiting, like economic coyotes, to snatch and salt away the monetary settlement of any reparations the Europeans might be thinking of paying to stupid blacks as a means of purging their moral conscience of their slave-owning past.

At the rate Blacks are committing intra-racial genocide by killing off one another in gang warfare by the lethal means sold to them by the same East Indians and others of ME ancestry, they will soon be an insignificant minority in the Caribbean while digging themselves early graves by consuming the dangerous fast foods and hormone-laced chickens sold by the dispensing outlets of poison controlled by other races.

Until the same blacks stop worshiping the idols of other peoples they will always be the hewers of the economic wood and drawers of socio-political waters for other races.

The whole tone of the article and the related comments are an indication of the problems which would always exist between the different ethnicities despite our feeble attempts through law or platitudinous construct to attempt to bring the races together.
Let us not continue to bury our heads in the sand.

  12. David you disappoint. Why can you not spot these games?

Pacha is 100% correct. We ought to focus on ours without reference to others. Simple as.
This submission is so ironic it is almost comical. The writer is clearly showing the same behaviors he accuses the others of.

  13. Your point is what again?

The best way to enlighten is to attack the problem heading.

  14. @David

Isn’t it intellectual dishonesty for Dr. Hinds to omit mention of Indian players in his speech?

    My point?

Did you make the above statement?

The statements reflects a lack of context and awareness of the past few centuries of our history. It reflects false equivalence. It reflects ultimately prejudice and disrespect for us.

Why should Mr Hinds list Indian players?

    You see the point yet?

  15. It this about history or an academic painting a true picture of what is written on historys page. There is a reason why we educate ourselves. There is a reason why a person of high moral fiber honors the golden rule. Right and wrong and all that Jazz. Could careless what others have done and continue to do.

What nonsense. We are all wrong, and David BU is right.

  17. this about history or a academic painting a true picture of what is written on history’s page

Aha! As I said I think your are (intentionally?) missing some context?

Is what is “written on history’s page” a correct representation of the facts ? Whose history are you talking about? Ours or theirs?

What has the golden rule to do with the moot?

The issue is simple, why do you think that Mr Hinds has to include Indians in this piece of work?

  18. The issue here is why Dr. Hinds omitted to role Indians played. The fact he said he did not have the time in a one hour speech is unacceptable. Was there another reason. Forget the emotional stuff.

  19. Let me borrow one of your favorites…

“You may have the last word”

  20. @ Dullard

When I am critical of David BU some people object. But he is amazing. I am beginning to question his Bajan roots. I have already worked out he has had some education in North America. But it fell short.

  21. The blogmaster anticipated the last comment would chase you away. An academic whether black or white has a responsibility to his vocation to do so with integrity. In fact a human being whether Black or White has the same duty.

Now you may have the last word.

  22. Does this include the scientists behind the Tuskegee syphilis experiment? Or those who experimented on pregnant Louisianan women? What about eugenics? What about the works of BF Skinner? I can go on. The man knows nothing about academic ethics.

  26. Sir William Skinner

    Yes and maybe no.

Academicians have long argued that we are not a race.

They contend that the original peoples of the earth, when no other people were here, and for millions of years, cannot be logically called a race.

Not when all the other peoples came from our loins – they are the races not us!

We have been arguing for a long time that Black people are incapable of being racist. That has been the basis of our downfall.

When we first saw Black people with blond hair in Papau, New Guinea – that was it for us!

There is no human feature, but that kind of hatred, that you can’t find in the original Afrikan woman.

David, I suspect the rationale for the critique of ur position lies in the remark “…on a black-focused blog. “

In short, the posters here boldly interpreted that “perspective” and “context” before the words “history conference”.

Either that or they held to that now cliched interpretation of the wordhistory that Dr Hinds had all rights to present HIS-story as the featured speaker!

Otherwise I am lost as to why it’s OK for we Afro folks to unnecessarily marginalize others as we highlight our achievements !

Dr. Mahabir may be a flawed person himself (I have no idea) but not sure how that affects the valid point he made about Dr. Hinds’ presentation.

    Interesting and amusing exchange above.

    I gone.

  30. Dr Kumar Mahabir presents a good case as to the futility of trying to corral East Indians and those of African descent into the same space. There is little point in trying to present a case that these two groups could ever become homogeneous.

Guyana and Trinidad should look at dividing their countries in half. Thereby allowing the two separate races to live exclusively separately from each other.

By the way, the popular and most recognisable culture of the West Indies has always been rooted in those who descended from the African diaspora. Whether it be music, cusine, dance, poetry, literature, et al. It does not mean that that the East Indian is look down on. Their culture generally is less popular and does not travel as well.

Dr Kumar Mahabir is simply a petty and an insecure soul. However he is a brown canary whose voice should be taken seriously. Barbados watch out!

If the academicians are saying that all races come from our “ loins” it logically follows that we can’t have phobias about other races. I don’t subscribe to the view that black women with natural blonde hair undermines this fact. Quite frankly, I suggest it strengthens it because if every other race comes from our loins , we would scarcely develop phobias toward those whom we have brought here.
You will note that during slavery with all the atrocities against us our women were still mothering the white babies even breast feeding them. Certainly that demonstrated a tremendous love for humanity and further cements the absence of phobias toward those who are still bent on showing their superiority over the Black race.
If we fast forward to our own situation, there is a misguided view on BU that poor Black people are ignorant of what is going on around them and must be “educated”.
Perhaps we need to recognize that our humanity and tolerance is engrained in us in a way that is not easily understood by others and even some of us.
    Something to seriously think
about taking kindness for weakness .

Ignorant does not translate to stupid. It is about being attuned to the extent they are educated to what are civic responsibilities.

The Africans who crossed the Atlantic 50,000 or more years ago, at the same time as African people dispersed to Asia, Australia and Europe settled here:
    https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/606

of course humanity evolved in Africa. Africa is the only place that has supported human life from the beginning. Of course we do not hate other people. Those “other” people are the descendants of our fore-parents.

The Chinese though are still looking for the beginning of humanity in a place other than Africa. They won’t find it because it does not exist.

Black is the original skin colour. The perfect colour for human beings who lived near to the Equator for millions of years, until recently [recently being 50,000 years or so]. All other skin colours are adaptations to climate to permit survival, principally the lightening of the skin to permit Vitamin D from sunlight to enter the body. Human beings cannot survive without Vitamin D. Without Vitamin D human beings develop rickets, and human females with rickets will have narrowed hip bones which will make the safe delivery of children difficult or impossible. We get Vitamin D principally from fish liver or the sunshine. Not from Boots the chemist, and not from Shoppers Drug Mart, and not from Walgreens or CVS. Lolll!!!. 2 million years ago, and today sunshine is the most readily option for those people who live near to the Equator. So white or light skin is only an evolutionary mechanism to permit survival of those human beings who moved far away from the Equator.

We note that the indigenous peoples of Australia who moved out of Africa at about the same time as those people who moved to Asians and European did not develop light or white skin, as there is plenty of sunshine in Australia.

All racism is a human construct developed by people who have forgotten where they came from.

And of course human life did NOT, I repeat NOT, first come to be in the Middle East, contrary to what Judiasm, Christianity and Islam teaches. That idea is a modern myth, created by people searching for their identity. Modern being anything that is less than 50,000 years ago. Of course the cradle of humanity does not rest in Asia either, and to search for it there is futile.

So therefore the Middle East is NOT important. The Middle East is NOT the cradle of humanity.

The cradle of humanity rests in Africa. We should all honour the motherland.

People move or are moved for all kinds of reasons, both serious and frivolous.

What I have noticed though is that HUMAN BEINGS of all colours, genders, languages etc. are adventurous. Sometimes people are forced from home by war, by drought or other natural disaster. Sometimes people move because they are looking for opportunities, sometimes they leave because they are following a sweet man or woman, lol!

I have a good friend whose family moved from St. Vincent to Barbados and when I asked why he said the 1902? eruption of Soufriere…so people move, or are moved for all kinds of reasons.

I have two aunts who followed their sweet men to Trinidad, which is why I have so many Trini cousins. And the men had moved to Trinidad looking for work, and there was work in Trinidad because World War 2 was on and the Americans build a military installation there and needed workers.

I met an old English woman in America who told me that as a very young woman she went to America for a holiday, she lost her passport, and by the time she got a new one a very sweet American fella had persuaded her to stay. Sixty years later she and her children and grandchildren was still in America.

Donald Trump’s mummy moved to America because she was looking for domestic work, because apparently thee was not much domestic work or poor wages in Tong, Isle of Lewis Scotland.

And so we have Donald Trump.

    You get me?
