I do not have to close my eyes to remember Christmas Carols on the radio. However, I have a passion to hear live music being played by a band and next to the Black Fingers Band of my childhood years, my next favourite was the Royal Barbados Police Band. Christmas mornings in Queens Park would have been boring without them. To me they were the highlight, the icing on the Christmas cake.

Christmas in Barbados is an event. The preparations start sometimes before Independence Day which is on November 30th. December 1st started a mad scramble in Barbados because no matter what was to be done, it was to be done for Christmas.

Little as I was, like everyone else I had something to do in preparation for the big day. I help scrubbed the floors, we brought sand from the beach in little skillets which were as much as I could carry, and we would sprinkle it in the yard. We cleaned the furniture; wash all the porcelain dishes and glasses that we never used. They just had to be cleaned for Christmas.

Soda bottles or sweet drink bottles were washed and put in cases. We bought whole cases of these drinks, wine, ham and lots of fruits. Getting many presents were not really the big thing in my family, we were content to get that new outfit to go to Queens Park to be on parade just like everyone else.

So imagine waking up on Christmas morning and it is cold outside, the sand on the ground made it look like snow or sort of, and there is the fragrant smell of the lady-in-the night coming in from the bush by the front window and added to it all, the smell of baked ham and freshly baked bread, cake and pudding. The house is spotlessly clean, new curtains are hanging; everything looks polished and brand-new inside. Outside, the poinsettia is reigning in its glory, its red flowers putting everything else in the shade.

We woke up early to go to church, which started at 5 a.m. I can remember it used to be as if I had just closed my eyes and I would hear my mother calling me to get up. When we walked through the woods I was more asleep that awake in the crisp morning air. Sunrise would greet us in church and it was only when you got outside that you could really see what the other people were wearing. After church my cousins took us to catch the first bus to Bridgetown and from there, we walked to Queens Park.

Everyone went to the park to show off their new clothes on Christmas morning. It was the thing to do. Like everyone else, we would stroll up and down the pathways; seeing what everyone else was wearing. We bought glazed candied apples or fresh apples if we did not want the candied ones.

To top it all, was the music the band played. It set the atmosphere for that pleasant day. Rather in my mind, it was as though the music cast a spell. William Shakespeare wrote that “all the world is a stage, and all the men and women mere players: they have their exits and entrances…” he failed to mention an orchestra that directed the activities on the stage.

If he was alive in my early years and saw what I had seen through my eyes, I am sure that he would have agreed with me for I saw the orchestra Shakespeare did not see. The Royal Barbados Police Band seemed to me to be performing a symphony that heralded the part of each player that came onto the stage that was the park.

There was music for everybody. They played marches, carols, traditional songs and other popular songs. All throughout the performances of this great event, the music played. At curtain call when the music stopped, all the actors, dressed in their finest clothes bowed and disappeared.

All my Christmases were not filled with music and excitement. There is a time that stands out in my mind when my mother did not have enough to fill our lives with excitement. That year Christmas was bare of all the preparations and clearing the cobwebs in my mind, we must have wondered why she was not bringing home any packages; she did not bring home any port wine, no falernum, no ham or flour to bake sweat breads. She did not even talk about what we would wear on Christmas morning.

Through it all, I remained hopeful but by Christmas morning I was sad. That day all she prepared was a simple meal, it was all that she could afford. It was a good thing that my uncle came by as he usually did at Christmas to bring ham, sweet bread and drinks and it made us happy. However, the memory of those goodies was fleeting, lasting no longer than a snow-cone.

What I will forever remember apart from our bleak meal is the story my mother told us on that Christmas Day. It was a story that an old man had told her of the Christmas Day that he had nothing to offer to his family. Zander is what we called him, but I believe that his real name was Alexander Yarde. He was a small farmer who worked a quarter acre of land behind our house. The year in reference must have been a difficult one. I do not recall if my mother told us the circumstances but when Christmas Day arrived, Zander did not have one red cent to buy anything for his wife and family. All he had were canes in the field. He made a swing with rope and a piece of wood and hoisted it from a tree. They sucked their bellies full of sugar cane juice that day and took turns on the swing all day long. There was such laughter and happiness that it turned out to be one of the most memorable days that they had ever experienced as a family.

From that, I knew that our plight was not new; it was not desolation it was not the end of the world and like my mummy said there will be good times and bad times; ours just happened to be on that Christmas Day.

Joseph on the first Christmas Day had nothing to offer to his wife or his first-born son. If you are fortunate enough to have more than you need this Christmas, please share with those who have lost their jobs, with the single mothers and their children. Remember the shut ins, those with children far away, the homeless, the desolate, the lonely and those in need of care. Put a sparkle in a child’s eyes as my uncle did long ago when I thought that all was lost. Have a Merry Christmas!

@Simple, u have an uncanny ability to muddy the waters with your weird pithy pokes.

You actually want to ‘denigrate’ or ‘wind up’ perhaps any Bajan exhibition winner by saying they come “second”… What an astonishing fail of a put down!

Of the hundreds of students who take the A level exams of my day (CAPE these days) you consider it “seconds’ that a students doesn’t get three A’s or some years two A’s and a B plus an A in Gen Paper but falters to a C in a paper or in a year when grades are excellent s/he gets a B with the A’s as a SECONDARY achievement!

You just boxing around the ring pun boxing day.

  2. FACT

    2nd is 2nd.

2nd is what comes AFTER 1st.

    2nd is NOT first.

  3. YOU AND THE REST OF YOUR ILLEGITIMATE SIBLINGS AND OFFSPRING ARE SECONDS TOO, NOT SO?

AFTER ALL 2nd is 2nd. 2nd is what comes AFTER 1st. 2nd is NOT first.

AND WUNNAH PAID FOR ME TO GO TO MONA FOR A FIRST CLASS EDUCATION IN MEDICINE NOT SO?

  4. DID YOU EVEN GET A LIL EXHIBITION? OR YOUR ILLEGITIMATE SIBLINGS OR CHILDREN?
    WERE YOU FIRST AT ANYTHING?

WERE YOU OR ANY OF YOUR ILLEGITIMATE SIBLINGS OR ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN FIRST AT ANYTHING BESIDES BREEDING LIKE RATS?

WERE NOT YOU AND ALL YOUR CHILDREN AND SIBLINGS BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK?

    IS THAT FIRST OR SECOND?

  5. SIMPLE SIMON
RE Tomorrow self I will ask my lawyer to go after you for the child money for the illegitimate children which I have had by you and which you have never supported.

LETS GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT

    I DONT DRINK- NEVER HAVE
    I DONT SMOKE-NEVER HAVE
    I DONT DO DRUGS-NEVER HAVE

    I DONT SCREW WHORES-NEVER HAVE

SO HOW ON EARTH CAN I HAVE HAD ANY ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN WITH YOU OR BY YOU THAT I HAVE NOT SUPPORTED

I WOULD HAVE TO BE DRINKING & SMOKING WEED AND CHECKING WHORES TO HAVE HAD ANY ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN WITH YOU OR BY YOU THAT I HAVE NOT SUPPORTED

  6. lol…Simple ah know ya teasing GP…but not only are Exhibition winners names on the SAME BOARDS as Scholarship winners at HC, QC etc but I personally know Exhibition winners who have outshone Scholarship winners immensely since university and are now extremely wealthy, they just keep a much lower profile and don’t flaunt or boast about their achievements academically or financially…….AND they give back to the island generously and no one knows…because they saw both governments for exactly the thieving scamps that they are….now that is true SCHOLARSHIP.

  7. And for the Mia who thinks she is talking to slaves with no intelligence who only exist to be ROBBED BY NASTY LAWYERS, CORRUPT, WICKED GOVERNMENT MINISTERS…..and nasty RACIST, thieving minorities …and got Paul Altman talking about building a racist, apartheid island off your island…..how stupid and ignorant can a black government get to allow something so vile around their already vulnerable BLACK PEOPLE.

Black people in Barbados should be PROTECTED just like the Sentinelese people…there should be no island of APARTHEID, RACISM and SEGREGATION…where black people are only WORKERS FOR RACISTS and SAVAGES…

…..and ya can guarantee the criminal Israeli jews will use the island as a base for their HUMAN TRAFFICKING BODY PARTS RING..it is a multibillion dollar business. and black people’s INTERNAL ORGANS ARE IN DEMAND…….

..and all the other crimes they commit they want to do it in peace… THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE WITH STUPID LEADERS…to use and abuse.

The black population in Barbados are being TARGETED.

  8. When multiple Barbados Scholarships are awarded how do we know who came first?

How would we compare excellence in the Classics with excellence in the sciences?

All we know is that the multiple winners qualify for a scholarship and that excellence is excellence!!

First and second belong to the days of yore when only one scholarship was awarded.

In those days, second got you a proxime accessit, that there is latin.

I believe that allowed you an honourable mention and perhaps not even an exhibition!!

The winner of the single Barbados Scholarship in those days was probably known as Dux … also latin!!

SS has gone senile yearning for the days of yore!!

  9. I WOULD HAVE TO BE DRINKING & SMOKING WEED AND CHECKING WHORES TO HAVE HAD ANY ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN WITH YOU OR BY YOU THAT I HAVE NOT SUPPORTED

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

… and then the Trumpian question would arise.

Folks, do you see what she looks like?

  10. Let Altman go tell Jamaicans and Trinidadians he is building an apartheid, segregation, racist island off Trinidad or Jamaica and see he don’t get himself FED TO THE FISHY…..or to some crocodile or some other man-eater ….BLACK BODY PARTS will be a BONUS because of both islands having over 3 million people combined…but they cannot pull that ish in either island without massive BLOODSHED..

In 1943, there were 7 Barbados Scholarship Awards.

The first four were of Open Scholarship Standard at Oxford and Cambridge and last three of Exhibition Standard.

All 7 were referred to as Barbados Scholarship Awards!!

Got this titbit from “The Harrisonian” of April 1944.

  13. “The hyperbole continues.”

the uninformed, unaware yardfowl ENUFF continues….

when ya see legislation in the US…is being PREPARED…to make it a FELONY to CRITCIZE the CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE that is Is(not)RAEL…you do not play slave master and house negro of parliament games with the jews…

  14. “All 7 were referred to as Barbados Scholarship Awards!!”

Most people don’t know they are one and the same…many times the government awards based on what they can afford AND many who were awarded exhibitions…are scholarship winners but depends on the cut off point where government is unwilling or unable to give the FULL RIDE.

DID HER FADDER GET A SCHOLARSHIP OR EXHIBITION?
DID ANY OF THE MEN DAT BREED HER, HER ILLEGITIMATE SISTERS OR ILLEGITIMATE DAUGHTERS GET A SCHOLARSHIP OR EXHIBITION?

RE .now that is true SCHOLARSHIP.

true SCHOLARSHIP. IS WHEN HAVING NOT BEEN BONDED, YA COME BACK AND ACT FOR YEARS AS THIS AND ACT AS DAT IN POSTS GIVEN TO NON BAJANS WHEN OTHER BAJANS WONT DO THE WORK

No real man would attack a woman’s personal life unless he needs a prerequisite amount of starch in his backbone … that is something you expect from a female GP …

  18. Georgie Porgie

A real man who knows and understands a woman would ignore that kind of stuff because silence does more to arouse a woman emotionally, than to have a man go back and forth with her…

  19. “THE MONETARY VALUE IS ABOUT THE SAME”

It really is, but the nasty lowlifes in the parliament made changes over the years, a caveat, which DENIES Exhibition winners their FULL RIDE.

    @ Dr. GP

Two things that de ole man is voing to say tou you.

You know why they hate you here on BU?

Because you do not play with them.

Whether man woman or inbetweeners you do not play AND THAT DEAR MYOPE IS HATED.

You are expected because of the fact that you speak with mastery and love for Our God to be a fool and to tolerate tomfoolery but, and they recognise this at their detriment, you are no one’s fool.

The second thing is “Litany of Your Life”

I shall explain with one of the numerous examples that you have shared here

“…true SCHOLARSHIP. IS WHEN HAVING NOT BEEN BONDED, YA COME BACK AND ACT FOR YEARS AS THIS AND ACT AS DAT IN POSTS GIVEN TO NON BAJANS WHEN OTHER BAJANS WONT DO THE WORK

True SCHOLARSHIP. IS WHEN HAVING NOT BEEN BONDED YA COME BACK AND ACT AS LECTURER AT BCC AND PREPARE A TEACHING MANUAL /TEXT FREE OF COST TO THE STUDENTS, WHICH THE RETURNING HEAD OF DEPT STOLE…”

When people like you speak the stranglers on in the Rum shop, listen and while some of us hear the repeating patterns of hatred towards a son of the soul, the majority of the badwords are content to ascribe your indicting Chronicle of the continuum of ineptitude, as bitterness.

Sometimes Dr. GP I try NOT TO READ WHAT YOU WRITE, because when I read it, it makes me angry to realise that the pattern of self destruction accorded tret sons and daughters of Bulbados IS NOT SPECIFIC TO ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL.

It is like a disease that exists a plague that has poisoned our people AND WALKS SBOUTUNDER THE GUISE OF INFERIOR SUPERIORS, KILLING WHO IT WILLS.

IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO TO BACK TO THAT FILTH GP.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND HELPING ME DECIDE

But I did play cricket and I know that all kinds of balls get wickets depending on the skill of the batsman. But your long hop was sweetly dispatched to the boundary and you have not retrieved it yet, I see.

Why would you think I cannot read the Dow charts? I have studied these things at UWI although I find them quite boring as I did even then.. I am just doing as you suggested and enjoying the show. Nuh lotta long talk! J

  22. A levels, Barbados scholarships and exhibitions,”illegitimate children”, whores.

    Memories of Xmas!

  23. What hate what.

Sargeant responded adequately to this matter las week.

  24. In 1944 it would have been probably the Colonial Secretary’s office that dealt with scholarship awards and disbursements.

Oxford and Cambridge set the scholarship awards, corrected the papers and recommended who qualified for an open scholarship to Oxford and Cambridge and who qualified for Exhibitions.

Barbadians at that time would have been the subjects of Her Majesty’s Government which was at war and needed every good brain in the Empire.

The Harrisonian listed the 100 or so former students who were serving, missing in action or POW’s and the nine who had given their lives until then.

    Three had been decorated.by then.

Flight Lieut. C. Desmond Ince, RAF – Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC): Bar to the DFC – Missing

Pilot Officer W. K. Hynam, RAF – Distinguished Flying Medal and the DFC

Pilot Officer B.F.H Miller – DFC

  25. Pilot Officer B.F.H Miller – DFC was listed among the nine dead.

In March 2015, then Minister of Education, Ronald Jones piloted an amendment to the Education Act, to LIMIT the categories of individuals who would be eligible for scholarships, exhibitions, bursaries and grants awarded to citizens…… as stipulated by the Act.

By limiting the categories, the ministry was essentially reducing the number of scholarships to be awarded.

However, I have not seen any information that would suggest or be reasonably interpreted as “denying scholarship winners their full ride.”

As it relates to “bonding,” on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, during a meeting held with the winners of scholarships, exhibitions and awards of excellence held at the Ministry of Education, then Minister Jones, said government was looking at removing the bonded stipulation of scholarship contracts.

I don’t know if any changes were made.

    I know.

  33. @GP

    We have differences of opinion.

  34. I am an ILLEGITIMATE / OUTSIDE CHILD but my memories of Christmas in Barbados are great.

I had family and friends who made Christmas enjoyable especially for the children.

Toys were not important. It was the Ham or baked pork or chicken and the sweet bread or pudding cake.

I am grateful to have spent the first 20 years of my life in Barbados.

I hope you all had a great Christmas this year. I did.

  35. @Lorenzo
At some stage I will get off my phone and reply using my computer.

    Here is some pre-work
Learn the difference between a promise made and a promise kept. You seem to have difficulty separating the two.

  37. One problem of mentioning names is that you will fail to mention some of the major contributors.

A happy 2019 to Hants. May your musical plate be always full.

  38. Same to you TheOGazerts.

  39. Artax…yes, they are denied the full ride scholarships they used to get and only get about 10K per term which has to be supplemented with a larger loan from student revolving and other places, either way, they do not get a full ride that GP alluded to they got in his time where they did not need to access multiple loans to attend university off island..

    BTW…Happy Holidays.

Lexicon…Simple is quite capable of taking care of herself, she gives as good as she gets.

  40. GP…both scholarship and exhibition winners are still bonded, which is weird because there are NO OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO RETURN TO THE ISLAND TO …TO GIVE BACK…

  41. Let me rephrase, up until 2010 they were still bonding, don’t know if the idiot Jones made the changes or if it was just talk because he so HATED to see all these bright young people getting dozens of scholarships and exhibitions knowing he will NEVER GET ONE.

  42. “True SCHOLARSHIP. IS WHEN HAVING NOT BEEN BONDED YA COME BACK AND ACT AS LECTURER AT BCC AND PREPARE A TEACHING MANUAL /TEXT FREE OF COST TO THE STUDENTS, WHICH THE RETURNING HEAD OF DEPT STOLE…”

And this is the reason most scholars STAY AWAY…

They KNOW they will be ROBBED, DISENFRANCHISED, MARGINALIZED and chased off the island if they try to make any changes for the better to UPLIFT THE PEOPLE ….most are just watching from a distance….THE DEGRADATION OF BARBADOS…by the jokers for leaders…and shaking their heads.

I forget to name you all because of old age forgive me but some of my worthy bloggers I have mentioned here with regard to your content please note that I also bid you Yuldtide greetings and the best for the coming year

  45. I was never bonded.

My brother who got his award in 1978 was bonded.

I guess the purpose was to get recipients of awards to return to the island and give back.
i have/had no problem with that.

What I found problematic is dat foreigners had/got certain jobs—and they still do..and you would be asked to act when they went on holiday at inconvenient times to them, such as Christmas time gor example

  46. @GP,
When Sir Wes Hall ( a good Ivy man) was a minister, I think it was tourism, he entered in to serious talks with the sports editor of the Daily Mail about bringing out a local publication, or so I was told.
The first thing the sports editor, who should remain nameless, did on his return to the UK was to walk up to my desk and ask if I would be interested in working on it with him. Funny that.
