I do not have to close my eyes to remember Christmas Carols on the radio. However, I have a passion to hear live music being played by a band and next to the Black Fingers Band of my childhood years, my next favourite was the Royal Barbados Police Band. Christmas mornings in Queens Park would have been boring without them. To me they were the highlight, the icing on the Christmas cake.

Christmas in Barbados is an event. The preparations start sometimes before Independence Day which is on November 30th. December 1st started a mad scramble in Barbados because no matter what was to be done, it was to be done for Christmas.

Little as I was, like everyone else I had something to do in preparation for the big day. I help scrubbed the floors, we brought sand from the beach in little skillets which were as much as I could carry, and we would sprinkle it in the yard. We cleaned the furniture; wash all the porcelain dishes and glasses that we never used. They just had to be cleaned for Christmas.

Soda bottles or sweet drink bottles were washed and put in cases. We bought whole cases of these drinks, wine, ham and lots of fruits. Getting many presents were not really the big thing in my family, we were content to get that new outfit to go to Queens Park to be on parade just like everyone else.

So imagine waking up on Christmas morning and it is cold outside, the sand on the ground made it look like snow or sort of, and there is the fragrant smell of the lady-in-the night coming in from the bush by the front window and added to it all, the smell of baked ham and freshly baked bread, cake and pudding. The house is spotlessly clean, new curtains are hanging; everything looks polished and brand-new inside. Outside, the poinsettia is reigning in its glory, its red flowers putting everything else in the shade.

We woke up early to go to church, which started at 5 a.m. I can remember it used to be as if I had just closed my eyes and I would hear my mother calling me to get up. When we walked through the woods I was more asleep that awake in the crisp morning air. Sunrise would greet us in church and it was only when you got outside that you could really see what the other people were wearing. After church my cousins took us to catch the first bus to Bridgetown and from there, we walked to Queens Park.

Everyone went to the park to show off their new clothes on Christmas morning. It was the thing to do. Like everyone else, we would stroll up and down the pathways; seeing what everyone else was wearing. We bought glazed candied apples or fresh apples if we did not want the candied ones.

To top it all, was the music the band played. It set the atmosphere for that pleasant day. Rather in my mind, it was as though the music cast a spell. William Shakespeare wrote that “all the world is a stage, and all the men and women mere players: they have their exits and entrances…” he failed to mention an orchestra that directed the activities on the stage.

If he was alive in my early years and saw what I had seen through my eyes, I am sure that he would have agreed with me for I saw the orchestra Shakespeare did not see. The Royal Barbados Police Band seemed to me to be performing a symphony that heralded the part of each player that came onto the stage that was the park.

There was music for everybody. They played marches, carols, traditional songs and other popular songs. All throughout the performances of this great event, the music played. At curtain call when the music stopped, all the actors, dressed in their finest clothes bowed and disappeared.

All my Christmases were not filled with music and excitement. There is a time that stands out in my mind when my mother did not have enough to fill our lives with excitement. That year Christmas was bare of all the preparations and clearing the cobwebs in my mind, we must have wondered why she was not bringing home any packages; she did not bring home any port wine, no falernum, no ham or flour to bake sweat breads. She did not even talk about what we would wear on Christmas morning.

Through it all, I remained hopeful but by Christmas morning I was sad. That day all she prepared was a simple meal, it was all that she could afford. It was a good thing that my uncle came by as he usually did at Christmas to bring ham, sweet bread and drinks and it made us happy. However, the memory of those goodies was fleeting, lasting no longer than a snow-cone.

What I will forever remember apart from our bleak meal is the story my mother told us on that Christmas Day. It was a story that an old man had told her of the Christmas Day that he had nothing to offer to his family. Zander is what we called him, but I believe that his real name was Alexander Yarde. He was a small farmer who worked a quarter acre of land behind our house. The year in reference must have been a difficult one. I do not recall if my mother told us the circumstances but when Christmas Day arrived, Zander did not have one red cent to buy anything for his wife and family. All he had were canes in the field. He made a swing with rope and a piece of wood and hoisted it from a tree. They sucked their bellies full of sugar cane juice that day and took turns on the swing all day long. There was such laughter and happiness that it turned out to be one of the most memorable days that they had ever experienced as a family.

From that, I knew that our plight was not new; it was not desolation it was not the end of the world and like my mummy said there will be good times and bad times; ours just happened to be on that Christmas Day.

Joseph on the first Christmas Day had nothing to offer to his wife or his first-born son. If you are fortunate enough to have more than you need this Christmas, please share with those who have lost their jobs, with the single mothers and their children. Remember the shut ins, those with children far away, the homeless, the desolate, the lonely and those in need of care. Put a sparkle in a child’s eyes as my uncle did long ago when I thought that all was lost. Have a Merry Christmas!

  1. May the BU family have an enjoyable Christmas with their family and friends. Special of those in the diaspora who decided to make the trek from Barbados to achieve their dreams.

  2. Headlines on tbis Xmas Day

    PM Mottley offers.
    Hope to retrenched workers
What Good is Hope when there is nothing to offer
A PM hell bent on borrowing speaking of hope is like sounding brass and clashing symbols

Merry Xmas to the BU household

  3. On this Xmas day retrenched workers are offered Hope
While Corporate Barbados and friends and associates of PMMottley receved Glad Tidings of Great Joy

  4. @Heather

One of the takeaways from the piece you submitted is the reminder that despite the humble beginnings of many from the period you referenced, many have been able to develop ourselves to progress. How do we find the path to sustain the country and by extension ourselves?

  5. You are correct again……..keep the pressure on.

Merry Christmas and a happy new, Mariposa!!!!!

  6. Thank you Heather for a beautifully written and evocative piece.
A very Merry Christmas to you 🙏🙏

  7. HERE IS A MORON TALKING ABOUT MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS WHEN MANY CHILDREN TODAY IN BARBADOS WILL NOT HAVE EVEN THE BASIC MEMORY SHE HAD.

    SAD AND INSENSITIVE!

HEATHER COLE NEEDS TO GET REAL AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE WHEELS ARE COMING OFF AND WE ARE ON THE RIMS IN BIM

RE despite the humble beginnings of many from the period you referenced, many have been able to develop ourselves to progress.

WHAT PROGRESS? YOU MEAN BACKING BACK?

GET REAL AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE WHEELS ARE COMING OFF AND WE ARE ON THE RIMS IN BIM FOR THAT IS THE TRUTH

RE How do we find the path to sustain the country and by extension ourselves?

START BY EMBRACING THE TRUTH GET REAL AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE WHEELS ARE COMING OFF AND WE ARE ON THE RIMS IN BIM INSTEAD OF BULL SHITTING ABOUT SCENARIOS THAT MANY TODAY WILL NEVER KNOW OR EXPERIENCE

HOW WILL DE PICNEY GET TO THE PARK THIS MORNING BY BUS FOR EXAMPLE?
WHICH BUS? WHEN WILL THE BUS COME? THERE IS NO BUS?

  8. Merry Christmas all.

  9. There are a lot of good things i remember about Xmas and one of those memories goes back to a time when Prime ministers would scoff or refute the idea of putting workers on the bread line at Xmas season
This Prime would go down in history as the First ever to take it upon herself to secure the riches of the rich and devastate the poor into a state of hopelessness during holiday season a season put aside for love and caring
Yesterday paultry bag of goods sold by govt at a price of 25 dollars to the poor reveal the insensitive nature of a govt around this time of the year ..yet in her speech. Mottley emits words calling on brotherly love for those in need where is the love in making money off those who can’t least afford a loaf of bread on Xmas day

  10. Heather Cole is an early Xmas morning foot soldier trying to spread Peace and Joy to the Hopeless
The only thing missing is the RPB with a rendition of Let it snow let it Snow

  11. “Merry Christmas to all”

But I especially want to take this occasion to thank the men and women of the Royal Barbados Police Force of old … who availed the kids behind District A Wall the opportunity to attended the annual Police Christmas Party … Your generosity of love, kindness and compassion did not go unnoticed … such memories as a kid still resonates within deep domain of my mind … but more importantly, had not for efforts of former Assistant Commissioner of Police Alvin Griffith … a man who showed a deep compassion and love for the kids behind the District A Wall back in the day … it wouldn’t have been possible …

  12. Oh do fuck off GP you moronic shouty cretin, this is a day of cheer and goodwill, no one needs a dose of your misery.

  13. GP give your head a shake, wonderful job Heather my fondest memories of christmas was when we were young, had nothing, but were a close knit family, Its the little things that make christmas special and make memories for a lifetime .

  14. So funny the Caption on Heather Cole article the black cake which is a staple of barbados xmas tradition now seemingly least affordable to many and most unlikely to those whose felt the wrath of a gvt who proceeded without caution to weigh the price and cost of suffering of workers by depleting the wages of many bajan household at Xmas time in order to satisfy the hunger and unquenchable greed of those international and local financial giants who can afford the price of a black cake at any time

  15. Mariposa cuts had to be made or the whole country would be on the bread line. more like solomon than lizzie borden I doubt Mottley or anyone would revel in someones misery especially at christmas Who would you have let go

If she is a moron for talking about her memories, ARE YOU A MORON TOO, when you, the ALMIGHTY SELF-APPOINTED BIBLE LITERATE, often talk about your BORING MEMORIES of WINNING a BARBADOS SCHOLARSHIP and WORKING and TEACHING in the 1970S…….like if people even care two RHs about what you did?

  17. Merry Xmas to all. Special greetings to Artax

Merry Xmas to the three ….

  19. ” YOU Go Heather” kudos to you for your warm memories . Hopefully while out and about you can do a research for next year Xmas article and write an article on those bajan households whose lives were wrecked at Xmas time by a govt who cared for the 10 percent while HOPING the crumbs falling off their table would be scattered amongst the 99percent [poor}

  20. Merry christmas theo its times like this that I am reminded of christmas mornings of past, when if I didnt wake up with a hard on I had nothing to play with.

  21. <3 Mariposa <3
Keep up the heat. Two guys took one look at the pace and retreated back to the safety of the stand.

    Keep the pressure on.

  22. Happy Christmas to Heather Cole & family and all other presenters a nd readers.

  23. Lawson this is a good comment.

  24. What’s with all the crocodile tears?

If only you had SHOWN this level of COMPASSION to those former Beautify Barbados employees who had to wait THREE (3) YEARS before receiving their severance payments…….or the former NCC employees who were awarded, by the ERT, less severance payments than they were entitled to, after Hal Gollop said the country did not have money.

In those days, you did not care if the government was insensitive or about the season of “caring and giving,”……… or gave “two hoots” about who could not afford to eat black cake. You were too busy trying to convince BU that the retrenchments were justified and necessary to save the country and prevent a devaluation of the Barbados dollar.

You did not care if poor Lisa Marshall could have afforded to buy black cake. You were too busy calling her a thief, after someone working at the Transport Board and associated with George Street, took revenge by leaking certain correspondence from her personal file to BU, to make it appear as though she stole money from TB…..

……….because she went to the press to protest the non-payment of her severance.

  25. TheOGazerts

    Thanks for the Christmas greetings.

    However, I prefer ordinary greetings.

Every day, my horoscope reads: “Beware of strangers bearing gifts.”

As such, I’m always wary of “special greetings.”

Merry Christmas to you and family.

  27. “……….a man who showed a deep compassion and love for the kids behind the District A Wall back in the day……”

    Hmmmmm……..

I’m here wondering as I wander, what type of deep compassion and love a man could show for kids behind District A wall…… or any wall, for that matter?

Reminds me of this Christmas song:

  36. Pretentious !phony and hypocrtical those who dare to open mouth and defend present govt actions
Actions which have depleted many bajans household of having a joyful Xmas
One can bet that Corporate barbados homes are deck with bows and holly while these corporate giants enjoy the soothing sounds of Joy to World
In turn the retrenched workers are offered platry baskets of limited food items (by govt) at a price of 25 dollars
Not even enough to satisfy one or two empty stomachs for a week
Now here on BU as if the pain and suffering was not enough here comes an early morning BLP foot soldier telling the people of barbados what a great yeterday it was as if her yesterday moments of jubilant times can compensate or help relieve the financial and psychological pain and suffering of the many unemployed at the hands of govt this festive season

  38. WARU I wish you everything you wish yourself! Happy Christmas.

  39. For me the weirdest thing was to be driving late yesterday afternoon and seeing the bedlam on the streets.

I turned into the supermarket not expecting to see any activity but it was carrying on a rollicking trade.

I went in and picked up a few things I didn’t need and could have got Boxing Day at a Gas Station in the quiet.

When I got to the cashier I remarked to her that it was so strange to compare how peaceful Christmas Eve used to be at that time of day.

She told me it is years now since the “consultants” advised to stay open but she remembered the time fondly too!!

I wished her a happy Christmas and went home.

I guess I must have been away from Barbados for a lot of Christmases.

Yesterday was quite an experience … and not only for the period in the late afternoon!!

I discovered something quite wonderful in the morning that put my mind at rest regarding a life problem I had wrestled with all weekend.

  40. Scripture

The Scripture tell us that promotion does not come from the north, east, south or west, but from God… He takes down one and puts up another
… so in the days of prosperity be joyous, but in the days of adversity consider … because God puts one against each other … something for the secular and religious minds to chew on …

  41. @John

You are right, crowds have been waiting at the supermarkets long before opening hours. Despite the challenges the majority trying to find away to have one last dance?

  42. I can see the spirit of Xmas has overcome Mariposa and she is holding back on her ‘fire’

Here she uses a more mild term ‘BLP foot soldier’.

I can only imagine the pace she will have tomorrow. Bring on the heat …

  43. Lol…it is Christmas yet Mariposa still struggling to gain traction. I hope Artax refrains from sparring with her, at least until 00:01. #time&place

  44. I was reading along until she mentioned a “real” name or as close to real that most people could recognize the individual. The story is bogus and any reference to the name should be removed, I am at a loss as to why she should sully the name of a family who were far from removed from the circumstances which she has described. This is not the first time she has done this as I remember she used the name of a shopkeeper to bolster another story sometime in the past.

    I will await “David’s” actions.

  45. @Sargeant, it is the truth! Merry Christmas to you!

  48. The Gifts of the Wise Men
    By Freedom Criers Spouse

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 ¶ And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. (Matthew 2:1–12)

The Gifts of the Wise Men

This story above is the story of the wise men who brought Gifts to the child Christ Jesus. Here they were acknowledging that they knew who he was the Creator and God and wanted to greet Him and welcome Him to this world. And since we assume they are indeed wise men who travelled far to welcome Him we can learn a few things from that (1) Wise men seek the Christ. (2) Embark on the journey. (2) Stay the course until you find Him (3) Earthly Kings are not really interested they only want to preserve their power. (4) God will guide you on your journey. (5) Be prepared when you greet Him with what you want to express your gratitude your “treasures”
What we want to talk about was what these wise men consider should be the gifts/“treasures” they should bring and the significance of it. They brought “gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” Let us think for a moment what these represent or are used for: (1) Gold does not rust or tarnish and it can be used for money. What use will the man who can send you to fish and get a gold coin from the mouth of a fish need gold for or one who can feed 5,000 people need gold. It can be said that they knew of His time in Egypt and that they would need money but I think they had a higher purpose in mind. (2) Frankincense was used to anoint new-born sons of Kings and priest, which may have been why it was brought to Jesus and have for a long time been used for embalming to preserve the body of the dead and also for burning for its fragrance and perfume. (3) Myrrh was used for a protection against infectious diseases to preserve the bodies of the dead.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. (John 19:39–40)

They must have thought about this a lot what to give the creator who created everything and they settled on Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. What do they mean to say with their gifts? I think they wanted to express that we all can take to the Christ child as we experience the birth of our understandings of God as a Child and also it is we that must approach God as a child without the arrogance/pride of an adult. Humbly we approach Him. And we take with us our Gifts: Gold which represents Charity, It does not tarnish/rust, and it lasts for ever. It is the pure love of Christ. Next we give the Frankincense that the aroma of it burning will raise as our faith to heaven. And lastly the myrrh is to preserve us as Hope does when life gives us a curve ball. It allows us to continue. These wise men was saying when we approach the Creator, the God of the universe we should take with us as an offering our Faith our Hope and the pure love of Christ, Charity. Them I think we will be wise men indeed.
