A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches,
and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Proverbs 22 Vs 1

From way back in the 17th Century when sugar was king, Barbados was a brand. It made the best sugar and the best rum. Even the first President of the USA visited in 1751. In the 1960’s with the filming of Island in the Sun, the brand Barbados was romanticized. It became the most desirable honeymoon spot and was regarded as a place of beauty that prompted many to insert on their list of places to visit. Nowadays, it is known as an exclusive tourist destination for jet set travellers especially from the UK including none other than Simon Cowell. The Merrymen have immortalized the name of our island in song, “Beautiful, beautiful Barbados, gem of Caribbean Sea...” The mixture of all of these; the historical, romanticism, beauty have created an allure to make the island a well-defined brand.

The island also benefited from a reputation of having a stable democratic government. It became a leader in the regional economic grouping CARICOM. Long before Rihanna became a sensation Barbados was a brand having established a good name and reputation for itself abroad. Now this all seems to have changed as the island has gone from being the brightest jewel in the English Crown to a struggling economy with mis-management at its epitome in the last 10 years .

The Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and all of his Ministers are to be squarely blamed for the economic situation that has adversely affected growth on the island. Chris Sinckler, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Donville Inniss, the Minister of Industry and International Business and Stephen Lashley the Minister of Sports and Culture have to date committed serious acts of infringement on the International credibility of Barbados. In addition, on the domestic scene many are now questioning the lack of judgement shown by the Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, the Minister of Health John Boyce and the Minister of the Environment Dennis Lowe which has resulted in serious harm to the tourism product.

Of late the Minister of Finance has also devalued the sale price associated with the brand. Mr. Sinckler has operated for the last 9 years as the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs. Management of the economy during his tenure has not been progressive for the local economy which was burdened with no less than 35 new taxes in this period. Mismanagement and his bad economic policies plunged the island into a home-made recession. Unable to meet any of his fiscal deficits targets, he resorted to continuous borrowing of funds on the international market. Ultimately the economic outlook for the island became one of negative growth amidst high taxation and borrowing. International credit rating agencies started to reduce the credit rating of the island making it more expensive to obtain international loans. Sinckler has been responsible for no less than 21 down-grades in the country’s credit ratings. He has made it difficult for the country to get low interest bearing loans. He has damaged the good name of Barbados. In the defense of Sinckler the Prime Minister provided a false narrative that was not based on any economic principles but that was appealing to the emotions of Barbadians. He said the rating agencies could not devalue Barbadians.

On December 3, 2017, the Nation newspaper reported that the Stephen Lashley Ministry of Sports and Culture had applied for a grant $100,000.00 of this approximately $94,000.00 was to pay contractors. UNESCO denied the application. Being denied a grant is not uncommon however, the newspaper noted that a terse response was sent to the Freundel Stuart Administration ” that it will not get one cent of the financing it applied for.’ If one reads between the lines, the Minister applied for a grant to pay for the services of contractors to prepare a report from which nothing was to be implemented. There being no checks and balances in local government for accessing cash; the Minister appeared to have tested the International waters to fraudulently obtain a grant without supporting evidence that a need was to be implemented. However, the UN agency sniffed a rat from the distance and said “no way jose,” His actions leads one to question how he could have been awarded a national honour, and why the Prime Minister did not break his silence on the matter or if he would be willing to invite the media to be present when he raises this issue with Mr. Lashley. Without a doubt, Mr. Lashley’s action of attempted fraud has hereby put any application from this island to the UN under the microscope and the possibility of Barbados not receiving any grants from the UNESCO in the near future. The UN may be of the opinion that all applications are fraudulent. He has damaged the good name of Barbados.

On December 6th, 2017, About 2 weeks ago it was also publicized that Barbados has been placed on the blacklist of countries conducting international business by the European Union (EU). The Minister of Industry and International Business, Donville Inniss said in a conference that he was shocked by the news that this had occurred. However, it was not the first time that the country was black listed under his watch. It previously occurred in 2015. Shame on him. He had two years to ensure that the requisite legislation had been put in place and enforced. The fact that it has happened again speaks to his incompetence to address the issues facing the Ministry for which he has responsibility. He too is responsible for the destruction of the Barbados Brand.

In addition to the above, the tourism product has been put at risk as a result of leaking sewage on the South Coast. The first response by the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Health was to pull a publicity stunt of jumping in the sea instead of adequately addressing the problem. Recently, there was a description about the sewage on the South Coast on Expedia, accessible to anyone seeking information about Barbados. The judgement and failure on the part of both the Minister of Tourism and Health to adequately correct this problem in a timely matter has had a negative effect on the Barbados brand- enough to threaten the existence of the tourism product.

With the secrecy that surrounds the sale of the Hilton Hotel, one wonders on whose advice and on whose judgement, was the action taken to devalue this piece of real estate that has become synonymous with the Barbados brand. Nike will never devalue its shoes; or Roberto Cavalli devalue the prices of his dresses. One can go on and on regarding the major brands. Therefore, why should the price of the Hilton Hotel be sold way under value when there are even some houses on the West Coast of Barbados that are worth $80 Million? None of the fore mentioned brands are as old as the Barbados Brand and they would certainly not consider selling off a part of their image that was known for performing well for the proverbial “mess of pottage.” It would only be considered self- destruction. To date the Prime Minister has not said a word about the sale of the Hilton Hotel.

It must be noted that the Ministers of Government of the present Administration have not only entered the realm of corruption but they have graduated without consequences to their previous deeds and have now become so brazen that they can test the international bodies as in the case of Stephen Lashley and sell a hotel without following the established rules as in the case of Chris Sinckler, the Minister of Finance. These are the types of Ministers that the Prime Minister has raised. Without admonishing or firing them when they erred instead he has stood in their defense as in the criminal case with the Speaker of the House; trivialized the impact of their actions as he did with the information of the island’s 20th downgrade or; said nothing. He is simply not a leader.

With the fore-mentioned, it is clear that based on their actions that this brazen set of politicians will do anything to win the next general election. All the signs are there and the people have allowed them to perfect their craft. However, like a sick patient taking a combination of pills that will have life threatening effects on the body so too is the current status of Barbados. The cash strapped government is in a serious bind causing it to undertake the selling of the Hilton Hotel. There is a stench of desperation approaching that the island’s economy is on the verge of collapsing and the action of the Ministers are accelerating the collapse. One wonders if the Prime Minister really understands what is at stake?

They have all….ministers and politicians, chief justices, attorneys general, lawyers, civil servants etc……. …over the decades allowed white collar criminals to destroy THEIR OWN SUPREME COURT. ….what will they NOT destroy.

  2. Can not someone with balls (if such a person other than Ministers of State exists) take out an injunction on the sale of the Hilton?

  3. David Comissiong canโ€™t do all!

  4. What is the financial arrangement between Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. and the

    Government of Barbados ?

  5. When you put it all down like that Heather…
what is the answer to your final question….
“One wonders if the Prime Minister really understands what is at stake?”

Only someone under the control of supernatural forces could persist with such idiotic, destructive and FAILING strategies….for so long.

Trump also clearly demonstrates that he is ‘not normal’.

The battle in which we find ourselves, is not one against flesh and blood.
Dark spiritual forces in high places are involved.
When unexplainable behaviours occur, we would do well to look beyond the traditional explanations.

Imagine wunna in THE MAJOR battle of the ages …. and don’t even know wunna donkeys from wunna heads…..

Bushie was at pains to point out that our building an ugly monument with a black pitchfork in the damn Garrison …was ‘abnormal’ behaviour…….

  6. “One wonders if the PM really understands what is at stake ” You think it matters to him ?

  7. Understands what is at stake?…………You should have heard the JA in the House today………ranting and rambling that he has a mandate that takes him down to May 2018.

There are at least 1,040 lawyers in Barbados to date, most of whom apparently have no moral core or they would be fighting these battles to preserve and protect the island and people, but obviously only maybe 2 of them care.

  10. Umm… adding to this is the news from BWA that they are putting Bajans on notice, to expect water rationings/outages/low pressures/no water in 2018. The excuse/false narrative ….low aquifer levels/periods of drought.

    This is 2017.

BWA, If you think that you must facilitate the UN Agenda 21, and the Paris Agreement to implement its Water and Sewerage Management protocols in order to receive the money they offer under the guise of false narratives at the expense/inconvenience of Bajans .. be duly warned to desist from this fraudulent concept to deceive Bajans of their right to water that they excessively pay for.

    Be duly warned.

The Solar Ring Of Light now governs and protects Barbados water resources.

    First sentence true, second false!!!

Did you know that Barbados was known as the “Cradle of Truth” in the 17th Century?

It had nothing to do with sugar.

It had nothing to do with Rum.

    Barbados was never a brand.

It was the people who were the brand!!

It was the people who earned Barbados the name “Cradle of Truth”!!

Barbados was always and will probably always be (given no serious geological convulsions) no more than a pinprick.

It produced very little sugar and very little rum!!

It was the people of the 17th century who made Barbados punch above its class, not sugar or rum.

Did you know George Washington’s mother was a descendant of a Barbadian family?

I more think George Washington and his brother visited Barbados to see family and renew acquaintances.

2 The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
4 By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
12 The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.
15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.
17 Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.
19 That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,
21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?
22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
23 For the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.
24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.
27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

  16. The Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and all of his Ministers are to be squarely blamed for the economic situation that has adversely affected growth on the island. (Quote)

This is not only historical economic illiteracy, it is also biased party political nonsense. The economic meltdown started in November 1966, and escalated under both DLP and BLP governments over the years. In the modern context, the 14 years of debt-driven growth under Arthur mis-guided governments set the tone for the Thompson/Stuart rule.
I have said before the most exciting government we have ever had, economically speaking, was the 1961 Barrow government. But it subsequently lost its nerve.
I can still feel the excitement of its initial initiatives: of course, it benefited from some BLP programmes, such as the Deep Water Harbour, the new hospital, etc, but the 1961 government had a 15-trawler shrimp business; modern technology companies such as Texas Instruments were here at the very beginning of the digital revolution; tourism out of French Canada was booming; expanding statutory bodies; education; etc.
We had the Central and Barbados Foundries, a dry dock, a Transport Board that worked, a modern airport, we were on a high.
After nearly nine years of mis-rule (keeping Sinckler as minister of finance for nearly all that period was bad management, no matter how well he performed, and he has not) the DLP cannot continue to blame the Arthur regime. What excuse does the DLP have for delivering us to the Chinese?
Our business classes have also failed and the entire nation has retreated in to docility. Our so-called tourism brand is a myth; what is the brand: sunshine, beaches, smiling darkies, then what? Would Barbados be a travel destination for me, if I were not a Barbadian. No. I can think of other Caribbean islands to visit.

As the political temperature rises in a sure sign that that the next general election is fast approaching, the contentious subject of vote buying has resurfaced in the national political discourse.

At a public meeting over the weekend, political newcomer and United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for St James South, Christal Austin, raised concern that people with cash-laden envelopes will be out and about on election day seeking to influence voters.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how big the envelopes are, but I have heard that some could go as high as $2,000 and people have already started getting flat screens and iPhones,โ€ said Austin, who was speaking during a spot meeting in West Terrace on Saturday night.

Connecting both the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and the main Opposition Barbados Labour Party (DLP) to the practice, Austin made it clear to her audience that the UPP, which is contesting its first general election, would not be going down that route.

โ€œWe have persons in the party, not just ready to talk but ready to bring legislation to end corruption at the political and governmental level.

โ€œOne of the things we stand against is the buying and selling of votes in this country,โ€ she made clear.

“The UPP must be commended for its principled stand.

Amid the current discussion about a code of conduct for parties and candidates to sign on to before the election to ensure the campaign sticks to the issues instead of degenerating in a mudslinging match, wouldnโ€™t it be a good idea if the parties also could be brought together to give a public commitment against vote buying?

Vote buying amounts to a corruption of the political process. The proper functioning of any democracy is premised on voters having the opportunity, after assessing the issues and solutions offered by each party and candidate, to freely choose who, in their judgment, is best suited to be the constituency representative and, at the national level, to be the Government.

On an ethical level, the issue of vote buying and selling goes deeper. In the first instance, it belittles and makes a mockery of the struggles and sacrifices of our fore parents for the right to vote and to have a say in who is selected to run the affairs of this country.

Prior to the advent of universal adult suffrage in 1951, 13 years after the 1937 riots, only a small percentage of the Barbadian population, predominantly landowners, had voting rights.

There is an important issue which the seller apparently overlooks in his or her zeal for cash or whatever inducement is on offer. When the vote is sold to the highest bidder, it can be argued that the seller has surrendered his or her right to receiving good representation. If the buyer becomes an elected Member of Parliament, he or she is under no obligation to deal with the particular constituentโ€™s issues or concerns over the next five years because the vote was part of an exchange.”

    Brilliant Hal.

What I would like to add is that the exodus of not only foreign investment but even consideration for investment, started with this gov’t’s overt bribery solicitation which is a commonly discussed topic anywhere casual business is done in this country.

That aspect of our failure has never been so prevalent before.

The first to leave were the first-time investors. The next wave was the large Bajan and Caribbean countries who can invest regionally easily. The third wave to leave was the smaller businesses who never thought of investing outside Bim but have been forced to due to local conditions. The brain drain started after the last election.

Fumble’s Fools have not just destroyed business, they have forever changed the way we do business.

We have regressed decades under Fumble and his Fools.

Massacre approximately 1.5M buffalo, just to force the Indians into two choicesโ€ฆ..depend on government hand-outsโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. or starve to death.

I’ll stop here, because I do not want to change the focus of Heather Cole’s topic.

  36. So what if my ancestors were white?

  40. OH CANADA !!!!!

“Seven years ago, Prime Minister Stephen Harper stood in the House of Commons and, in careful but moving language, recounted the facts of the residential school system โ€“ whose horrors were already known, if still imperfectly.

The P.M. spoke of 150,000 native children forcibly separated from parents and communities,

and carried off to places where native languages and culture were prohibited. He spoke of how the victims were inadequately housed and fed, and emotionally, physically and sexually abused. He said the policy was a misguided attempt to assimilate them into the dominant culture,

and “to kill the Indian in the child,” as Sir John A. Macdonald himself had put it. “

ac…shut your yardfowl hole and read this, yall are getting exactly what you deserve and he has not even gotten started yet, why do you think Alleyne is “not surprised”….

,… it would be a real crime if Harris does not start on you and Carson Yardfowl FIRST. …stupid yardfowls.

It will be interesting to watch the fallout from the Alleyne/Harris/Sagicor brouhaha.

As was posted to Naked Departure, both Alleyne and the Chief Justice got complaints of what Harris through CGI Insurance does to injured, helpless people to avoid paying them compensationโ€ฆ.

โ€ฆโ€ฆ.the Commissioner of Police also got the informationโ€ฆ..yet they all sat and did nothing, Harris had the corrupt criminal DPP Leacock to protect him and they were ALL comfortable with thatโ€ฆ.because he was one of dem.

Well time is longer than F-ing twine.

Read and weep you shithead Yardfowls, I remember when Carson Yardfowl cuss me on here for the Kutappa-Harris family, but he did not know what I know ….

…. allyuh yardfowls want poisoning…till ya dead, dead, dead, useless bacteria yall are.

Serves him right, no sympathy, when people sent information to Alleyne that Harris and his dirty CGI lawyers, instead of paying injured people, were trying to FORCE them into surgery at his Bayview Hospital BEFORE they were even examined by CGI’s slimy doctors, because he thought no one knew he owned Bayview….he should have investigated and worked to find ways to punish CGI Insurance for trying to kill claimants instead of paying them, find ways to pressure him into stop abusing claimants or pull his insurance license, instead he did nothing.

One can only wonder how many claimants of personal injury lost their lives because the scum Harris never wants to pay injured people.

When information was sent to the chief justice regarding the misuse and abuse of the supreme court by CGI, their lawyers and other insurance companies to avoid paying injured people, he should have pressured the attorney general to put systems in place to stop Harris and others in their decades long criminal activities against the court, the Transport Board and injured claimants, instead they all sat their asses down and did nothing..

So Harris is well within his rights to destroy each and every one of those uncaring to their own people…vicious mothers*******.

Hi, I asked before. When did turkeys first come to Barbados and who brought them? Do you know? Apart from sugar, what is the history of agriculture in Barbados. Our official historians do not write about these issues.

  45. If you check where you asked, you will find I tried to answer but I really do not know.

I thought it would have been from England but I was wrong.

Turns out Turkeys originated in the Americas!!

Guess the English were more into the Goose!!

America and Barbados were joined at the hip in the 17th century so it is possible Turkeys came from there by ship.

Barbadians are more American than they know!!

Breadfruit came from the Pacific …. brought here to feed the growing slave population.

  46. http://www.britishturkey.co.uk/facts-and-figures/turkey-history-and-other-facts.html

Might have come from England too!!

First ones arrived there in 1526, a century before Barbados was settled.

I more suspect they came from New England, a land of plenty with numerous family connections to Barbados from early times!!

    Maybe Ligon sheds some light.

  47. Guinea birds come from Guinea, Africa.

Guinea Grass is also from Africa.

  49. From WIKIPEDIA

Sir Joseph Banks and others saw the value of breadfruit as a highly productive food in 1769, when stationed in Tahiti as part of the Endeavour expedition commanded by Captain James Cook.[4][6] The late-18th-century quest for cheap, high-energy food sources for slaves in British colonies prompted colonial administrators and plantation owners to call for the plant to be brought to the Caribbean. As President of The Royal Society, Banks provided a cash bounty and gold medal for success in this endeavor, and successfully lobbied his friends in government and the Admiralty for a British Naval expedition. In 1787, William Bligh was appointed Captain of the HMS Bounty, and ordered to proceed to the South Pacific to collect the plants. In 1791, Bligh commanded a second expedition with the Providence and the Assistant, which collected seedless breadfruit plants in Tahiti and transported these to St. Helena, in the Atlantic, and St. Vincent and Jamaica in the West Indies.[3][4] Although Bligh won the Royal Society medal for his efforts, the introduction was not entirely successful, as most slaves refused to eat the new food.[7]
