Every 5 years, Barbadians get an opportunity to look at their politiciansโ€™ report card and decide whether to allow them to continue to manage the national economy, or turn over management to a more competent group.ย  Over the past 50 years, we chose not to look at their report cards, but instead simply listened to our politicians declare that they were doing a good job, and the opposition declare that they could do a better job.

Those of us who do not worship politicians normally made our voting decisions based on whomever was the most persuasive.ย  I am an Engineer.ย  How could I have been so gullible, naรฏve and lazy?ย  Politicians cannot grade themselves. What was I thinking?

Like many others, I simply wanted to trust that our politicians knew what they were doing.ย  I just wanted to participate in Barbados economy and leave the management up to what they told me was an experienced and competent political class.ย  Our dollar appeared stable, the transition of power between BLP and DLP was non-violent, and we were not a dictatorship.ย  So while everything was not perfect, I was convinced that they knew what they were doing.ย  Oh, how wrong I was.

It was in 2015 that I just happened to see our politiciansโ€™ report cards by accident.ย  I read the IMF reports for Barbados and I was shocked to learn that we had been failing as a country for the past 20 years.ย  The IMF informed Barbados and other developing countries that we could use debt to finance our development, but they warned us that our debt should never, under any circumstances, exceed 40% of what we as a country made in one year, which is called the Gross Domestic Product or GDP.

Twenty years ago, the BLP took Barbados past this maximum ceiling that should never have been crossed.ย  However, rather than quickly return to the safety of under 40% GDP before anyone found out, they recklessly and arrogantly took Barbadosโ€™ debt to an irresponsible 90% GDP.ย  Why on earth and in heaven did the BLP do this?ย  If they thought that it was necessary for us to cross the 40% maximum limit, then why not ask our permission, or at the very least, inform us.ย  They had no right to plunge all of is into an unsustainable debt and almost ensure that our children will lose this country – no right whatsoever!

Clyde Mascoll recently challenged my figures on โ€˜Down to Brasstacksโ€™ and shockingly declared that the BLP debt was good debt.ย  I responded that my figures came from the IMF, the same source that he used when he was criticising the BLP for their reckless borrowing when he was leading the DLP.ย  Further, the only good debt was any debt below the safety of the 40% GDP ceiling.ย  Anything over that ceiling was irresponsible and reckless debt.ย  I challenged him to discuss this issue with me at any time.ย  He has yet to respond.

The DLP took the debt baton from the BLP and appear to have simply given up.ย  They have allowed the debt to rise to about 150% GDP, which has taken us to the brink of economic ruin.ย  In this upcoming election, the DLP will claim that they are doing a good job, but the IMF report card shows that they are failing miserably.ย  The BLP will claim that they could do a better job, but the IMF and Moodyโ€™s report cards show that they were the ones who actually placed us in this financial mess.

After I read the report cards, I set about publishing solutions to the various problems hindering Barbadosโ€™ development, but neither established party appeared to be listening.ย  Peter Boos subsequently offered similar advice, and he was informed that unless he was in the political trenches and got his hands dirty, that he basically had no standing to offer any advice.ย  Since the DLP explained that the only way that they would listen to advice is if I got into the political trench, then into the trench I went.

Solutions Barbados was established in 1 July 2015, primarily to offer good advice to both political parties.ย  However, despite being in the political trench with them, they still would not listen.ย  Therefore, we will assemble 30 responsible persons in order to finally give Barbados voters a competent alternative to the two established parties.ย  We are pleased to announce the following additional candidates: Kenneth Lewis, Leighton Greenidge, Daniel Chalbaud, Cherie Pounder and Betty Howell.

Grenville Phillips II is the founder of Solutions Barbados and can be reached at NextParty246@gmail.com

Its good that people step up, Anyone but the DBL or BLP and no lawyers in Government Barbados trained,

Next, the way you describe the DLP and the BLP ears for not listening to your Advice is the same way you do not listen to CUP/ BFP, We told you of information that is not in the IMF nor Moodys report, You need all the factors before 1 july 2015 or 20 years ago,

The information giving to you can go back in time from 1926, oh you say to old, Okay we can go back to 1966, again you say to old, Well we can start at 1986 where a Ponzi Fraud takes about 30 years to come apart. !986 After Probate of the Will written by Sir Sleepy Smith made for his Aunt Beatrice Henry of Barbados, Who was Born 1892 who dies Dec 13-1985 at the age of 93.

Will Probate June of 1986 in 6 months. Is 1986 too old? Now we can look at over 200 Plantations that was part of the Estate, There is to be 491 Plantation base on their records and every part of Barbados have an owner. Yet you Barbados Library only list 396, Now SB is that Fraud or Mismanagement? Where did 95 Plantation went to in our History that we don’t learn of in school?

Where is that in the IMF report or Moodys? On a fraud history set up to fraud for unclear title land?Did you also see in those reports how Sir Richard L Cheltenham kept the Plantation deeds to Assent for Violet Beckles from her Aunt? and went into Business with Sir CO Williams. What page was that on the IMF report?

Did you ever check with Station Sgt Mark White of the Royal Barbados Fraud on his FINDINGS AS OF AUGUST 10 2009? or the Archives or Land Registry to see what you can’t find or even missing? Did you ever seek to see where the government was giving your company work did you ever seek to see where you were building and working or was the government word under the BLP was just fine with you?

All of the time you never heard of the events in the news about land? never did your OWN homework in your own Nation but seek to listen or read reports of people going back to 1989?

Did you think the Nation Newspapers were printing junk and lies then or now?

Did you do your homework to know the relationship between Banks, Loans, land, Housing and the effect on a Nation growth? CLEAR TITLE land?

Did you look to the effect of land tax bills and no recorded deeds and how the lawyer rob the people like Ralph Thorne QC, his wife is a Judge?

The IMF report on the surface and not at the roots as everyone like yourself. But you are living in Barbados and can not feel nor see the Massive Land fraud and false documents, rewriting the records at the land registry to match the crimes bet the lawyers and the Sirs of Barbados, Nor can you see the ACTS passed to make their crime legal again premeditated FRAUD.

Did the IMF report say that Barclays/CIBC bank was taken over by these two Sir crooks where title deeds and money from Beatrice Henry Estate to Violet Beckles were held?

Did the IMF report say that CLICO holdings as printed were a .5 Billion Dollar US$ company with assets totaling such? And yet the company can not sell Plantations land they are to own taken from the Estate to boost their books on the biggest PONZI fraud Ever to be seen in the Caribbean.

1997 VAT at 15% to help people move from land rent to land ownership with help from the UDC? Where more than 85Million dollar was paid out to the wrong people? Mostly lawyers and fraud persons acting as owners to get at that VAT money and overcharging the system with no clear title to land,, This is Why after the BLP lost in 2008 PM David remove all heads of the UDC,
DID the IMF report also report that 140 houses were missing along with $500 Million dollars with the help of another crooks ass lawyers Samantha Cummins? Who was removed and placed back after the PM David died?

Did the IMF report speak of Richard Byer and the good crook of the House and used the UDC like he was a PIMP? Was said to have stolen money from the House and was removed under David the PM, and after the PM David was said to be POISONED and died 23rd Oct 2010 Byer also was returned to his post he stole from? Sitting in the middle of the House?

Did the IMF report speak of the part former Attorney General Sir David System played in this massive land fraud from 1995 after he was informed when he was based at the post office 11/5.Who made CJ and build the new Court House on white park road next to CLICO and Sir Richard right across the Street? What page was that on the IMF report?

Did the report talk of Sir Allen Standford? the & billion dollar Ponzi master and his relation to Sir COW another Billion dollar man? Night lights at the Oval for night games?

Was there any word on the relationship of land, CLICO, Sagicor, First Caribbean/ CIBC PONZI fraud with land records buying selling and money and land laundering and Leroy Parris? With Owen PM with Mia head of the BLP today? and the band of crooks lawyers?

It seems there is al ot more you and the IMF can’t see or will report on for the People of Barbados to learn of the slavery mess these lawyers have us in with fake news and cover up, Even COP Dottin knee deep in this madness.

Did you know of the FOREIGN CORRUPTION PRACTICES ACT, and that most the money the money used touch New York Banking? if anyone in the line of money is a crook and laundering all can be charged using the USDollar?

Acquisition of land is fraud? Who they paid and how much, we seem to never know but the government seem to hold all open land taking from owners and crooks who sold the land and the money never returned to the people who bought?

The Judicary is broken and it can not funtion , Why? because many of the lawyer crooks are now Judges today reafirming their fraud titles,

Let Me stop here for now.

BY APRIL (2014), the future of 19 statutory corporations and the 9 000 people who work with them will be known. Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler revealed that some of the corporations would be closed, others merged, while a few would see the involvement of the private sector where practical. Sinckler made the disclosure in answering a question during a media briefing on the Barbados economy at Government Headquarters yesterday. The minister said the final report on the operations of the statutory entities should be completed by the end of this week or next week at the latest, and by the end of this month Cabinet would examine the recommendations. โ€œWe are currently reviewing the operations of 19 statutory corporations with a view to consolidating their operation,โ€ he said. โ€œThe final report will be presented to Cabinet shortly and implementation, follow[ing] wide and intense discussions with all of our Social Partners, will commence in April 2014.โ€

Can’t believe that you left out the Productivity Council….. the biggest waste of money since the Public Sector Reform ministry…

How can Grenville possibly answer that question without access to the financials and the operations reports of those bodies? Not even the management of these statutory bodies seem to have this information.

    Grenville’s approach has been clearly stated…. ISO9001.

This will quickly define the weaknesses and strengths in all these bodies and drive corresponding actions – BASED ON FACTS.
    THAT is what ISO9001 does.

The ones that are productive, or that are able to change to become productive would justify their existence, while the fluff will condemn themselves to closure.

    Frustrated Businessman:

Those statutory boards came into being simply because succesive PMs objected to the checks and balances of the civil service for project implementation and by creating them they could hire and fire, access funds without accounting for it as the auditor general has pointed out and generally operate it as a pork barrel.

I would suggest that we get rid of all of them and institute community based councils in each parish to service its individual needs and allow the civil service to deal with country wide concerns.

  15. Vincent getting rid of the statutory entities does NOT address the underlying problems.

Yes many boards can be disbanded as many are duplicitous or not effective in current state but how seriously can you be to suggest that we “institute community based councils in each parish”!

Bro, that is then repetitive and ten-fold duplicitous boards.

An LOL twist on the proverbial six of one, dozen or more of another!

And on a serious note: @ David at 6:22 AM …undoubtedly “encouraging non traditional players to participate in the process” is a good thing but to be clear in order to be successful these folks MUST have the same characteristics and dynamism that infuses current politicians so for all practical purposes as fresh as they are we don’t know yet how different they actually will be.

Thus I wish them well and hope that they have the fortitude- if successful – to overcome the same issues which dull the sharp edges of those ‘traditional players’.

  20. In MY opinion, your interpretation of economic data is too simplistic. You seem to be suggesting that when the BLP took over the reins of government in 1994, the debt to GDP level was 0% and that administration went on a โ€œborrowing spreeโ€ to increase the debt to significantly high levels.

You used one aspect of the data re โ€œsustaining debt under 40% of GDP,โ€ to โ€œcreate a straw man to knock him down,โ€ because it is politically expedient for you to do so.

Yet, although you are trying to convince us that SB will not be characteristic of the other traditional political parties, based on your analysis of the debt, you are essentially engaging in similar activities of which you want to distant SB.

Your argument would have been better accepted if you had presented a comparative analysis of the debt under previous administrations, commencing from 1966.

Since you have referred to the IMF, my critique of your article will be based specifically on IMF data as presented in their Article IV Consultation Reports.

The following excerpt was taken from page 5 of the 2004 IMF Article IV Consultation Report:

โ€œBarbadosโ€™ economy did well in the 1990s, supported by prudent policies and a favorable external environment. During 1993โ€“2000, per capita real GDP growth averaged 2.5% per year, annual inflation was 2 percent or less, unemployment declined sharply, and key social indicators improved further. The structure of the economy shifted from agriculture to tourism and financial services. This performance was achieved in the context of small fiscal deficits (less than 2% of GDP), a conservative monetary policy (which resulted in a substantial accumulation of external reserves), and a range of market-oriented reforms.โ€

You have also ignored certain variables that would place debt within its particular context. For example, if the debt was used to add to the productive capacity of the economy (debt for productive purposes) to derive long-term economic benefits, such as infrastructural development or the transport infrastructure; if the island experienced economic growth as a result of the debt, etc. Or, on the other hand, if the debt was incurred to finance unproductive purposes.

  21. @ Vincent

It is common knowledge that successive BLP and DLP administrations establish statutory corporations under the guise of circumventing governmentโ€™s โ€œbureaucracy,โ€ when in actuality they are established to create jobs for party supporters.

The National Assistance Boardโ€™s Housing Welfare Programme, for example, was closed to facilitate the establishment of the Urban Development Commission (UDC) and Rural Development Commission (RDC).

To date, what have the UDC & RDC been able to achieve for โ€œimpecunious individuals,โ€ other than appointing party supporters as Directors (Oโ€™Brian Trotmanโ€ฆ.. BLP & Derek Allyeneโ€ฆ DLP) and exchanging BLP employees for DLP employees in 2008.

Then the current DLP administration added โ€œfuel to fireโ€ by subsequently establishing the Constituency Councils, which more or less serves as an โ€œintermediary agencyโ€ between the NAB, RDC & UDC.

In other words, indigent individuals seeking the Constituency Councilsโ€™ assistance will be referred to the relevant agencies, when the individual could go directly to that agency themselves.

As a result, we have four quasi government organizations, with four times the staff complement, providing similar services that were previously provided by the NAB.

And it is also interesting to note the NAB is significantly over-staffed. For an agency with a reduced undertaking, NAB employs 2 Clerk Typists and 1 Secretary; 1 Human Resources Manager & 1 Administrative Officer; 1 Officer to type reports; 1 Maintenance Officer to oversees the maintenance of 3 vehicles; an Accounts Department with 1 Accountant, 1 Senior Clerk and 4 Clerical Officers; the Vauxhall Senior Citizensโ€™ Home is over-staffed.

Additionally, what is the real purpose for the Arthur Administration establishing the Commission for Pan-African Affairs, other than to appease Pan Africanists such as David Commisiong, David Denny, Dr Deryck Murray and the late Ras Ikael TafarI?

  23. The MoF promised to rationalize statutory entities in Barbados for some time. Now in the twilight of its tenure the matter is outstanding. Bear in mind this is a process initiative designed to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness in the public service.

  24. Yes, since 2014, the MoF promised to rationalize at least 19 statutory corporations, โ€œwhere some of them would be closed, others merged, while a few would see the involvement of the private sector where practical.โ€

However, judging from the fallout experienced by the retrenchment program, the BIDC debacle and taking into consideration an election is imminent, perhaps the DEMS will want to dedicate their time to winning the 2018 election and then deal with this issue early in their third term.

Good comment on the simplistic analysis provided by SB. I thought I was the only one Bushie would get to “beat up”.
On UDC and RDC, the former especially did far more than NAB and took a more comprehensive approach to addressing poverty, which requires more than housing. Some political appointees, some political supporters, La and downright thieves ruined a good idea. A hybrid of the commissions and CC could serve communities well.

โ€œOn UDC and RDC, the former especially did far more than NAB and took a more comprehensive approach to addressing poverty, which requires more than housing.โ€

    @ Enuff

Based on certain knowledge, I have to disagree with your comment.

The only things that differentiate NAB from UDC were:

There was an improvement in the design of the traditional โ€œwelfare houseโ€ and prior to the establishment of UDC, artisans used to assemble at NABโ€™s Verona, Bank Hall office to be given contracts for house repairs, painting, demolitions, etc. Under the UDC, those artisans had to register a business in order to qualify for contracts.

UDC took over the mandate of NABโ€S Housing Welfare Department and concentrated specifically on house repairs or providing houses. Whereas NAB has Welfare Officers (qualified social workers) who deal with poverty issues, UDC does not. All issues dealing with poverty were either referred to the NAB, Welfare Department or the Poverty Alleviation Fund.

Before the โ€œAssistance-in-Kindโ€ program was scrapped, the NAB provided indigent individuals with beds, basic furniture, wares, cutlery and oil stoves, and some senior citizens were provided with night chairs.

Supposed, for example, a senior citizen living in deplorable conditions and cannot properly take care of him/herself was referred to NAB. That individual would undergo a personal assessment by a Welfare Officer. The house will be examined by a Technical Officer who will determine if the house can be repaired or one has to be provided. Upon completion of repairs, the individual was provided with basic furniture, stove, wares and associated utensils. The Welfare Officer will also refer the individual to the Home Help Service and a Supervisor would visit the recipient to determine the type of help they may require.

Although the above is just a basic description of what transpired previously, Iโ€™m sure you must agree that the NAB โ€œtook a more comprehensive approach to addressing poverty, which requires more than housing.โ€

The fundamental truths are always SIMPLE. As soon as there is a lotta complexities, big words and shiite jargon, ….you done know that we dealing with jobby…

Secondly, Bushie does NOT ‘Beat you up’, the Bush man simply ‘whacks’ you a bit from time to time when your, not insignificant intellect, seeks to lead gullible brass bowls down a clear partisan political line….

Thirdly, Artax knows full well why he takes the position that he has on this subject. The point that Grenville is pushing is simple, clear, indisputable and valid. It is intuitive that there should be a definite limit on the exposure to debt that any organisation or person should allow in the interest of their own independence and continued viability. The UN’s recommendations are as valid as any others that can be suggested.

Saying that the “Barbados economy did well in the 1990’s” is like saying that things went well for the prodigal son (not our BU brother – the one in the Bible) initially after collecting his inheritance…. indeed he had a BALL….
…til the shit hit the fan…

Let’s just say that Bushie and Artax differ in their appreciation of ‘economics’ ….(whatever the hell THAT is…) ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. Artax

From my recollection, UDC did houses, footpaths, land security, loans, wells, sports facilities and children’s play parks. That in my opinion is a more comprehensive and strategic approach to poverty than focusing solely on housing. I think, however, we are looking at poverty at two different scales.

โ€œFrom my recollection, UDC did houses, footpaths, land security, loans, wells, sports facilities and childrenโ€™s play parks.โ€

    @ enuff

With the exception of houses, footpaths and wells (all of which were previously done by NAB), the UDC unsuccessfully ventured into providing other services for which it was not adequately โ€œqualifiedโ€ to undertake.

As it relates to loans, UDC competed with agencies such as the BIDC, Fund Access and Enterprise Growth Fund to provide financing for the owners of small to medium sized businesses.

According to a special audit report of UDC for the eight year period ended March 31, 2005, the agency engaged in activities that were outside its mandate.

The following excerpt was taken from pages 11 & 12 of the UDC Special Audit 2006:

โ€œOn a number of occasions, funds FROM the house repair and replacement program were USED to FINANCE business ventures. Examples are as follows:

    (i) A contractor was employed to construct a bar and restaurant in May 2003. $21,000 was spent on this project which was halted because there was no planning permission granted.

(ii) A stall for vendors was built at a cost of $8,000 in May 2003.

(iii) A snackette was constructed at a cost of $19,473.34.

Commercial ventures such as those listed above, should have been considered for financing out of the Enterprise Fund or REFERRED to OTHER lending agencies. It should be noted that there was no information indicating that any of the recipients were poverty cases. In two of the cases outlined above there were no files made available for audit inspection in spite of repeated requests.โ€

    +++++++++++++++++++

A number of people benefited from UDC loans, without the necessary collateral, to purchase cars for taxi purposes or to open shops. When these individuals were asked about repayment, many of them said they thought the loans were grants that they did not have to repay.

These activities provide us with sufficient evidence to reasonably conclude why these entities should be closed.

Robert Mueller, appointed by the Justice Department as special counsel to oversee the investigation into Trumpโ€™s ties with Russia, just confirmed with Republican leadership under questioning that he sees this more as a criminal investigation, and will not treat it as a general intelligence probe.

GOP Senator Lindsey Graham spoke with reporters on Thursday (broadcast on CNN) and said that was the key takeaway leaders received after speaking with him. He repeated the claim, โ€œthis is now a criminal investigation.โ€

Trump has been advised to retain an outside lawyer to help defend himself against any potential charges that may arise.”

@Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger May 18, 2017 at 7:45 PM & 7:49….in the grand scheme of life here or generally this is perhaps inconsequential BUT….

1)The special counsel Mueller DID NOT meet with the senators today as your cut&paste suggests. He has met or spoken to NO ONE since being appointed.

The fact is that it makes no difference anyhow…a special prosecutor/counsellor can investigate any damn thing he wants.

Whereas Trump’s victory will be recorded as one of the MOST awesome political events of our generation, it can equally be argued that his firing of the FBI Director will be his MOST stupid political decision!

It is impossible that Trump or most likely one of his acolytes will NOT be indicted for something.

2)Grenville Phillips the aspiring politician is NOT a chartered secretary. It is his father who is the accountant/chartered secretary.

And as far as available public info he Phillips Jr. does NOT live in St.Peter

Beat up on the man as much as you want but surely we should never impute motives to the man that are based on absolute misinformation or carelessly attempted ‘gotchas’.

Right about now SB should be starting a series of public meetings. Grenville cannot expect, in our political culture, to operate under the radar.

Vincent……I really dont care what dictatorial rules Grenville has, he is not the boss of me, if he cannot be transparent now that his is begging for votes, he sure as hell will not be transparent once he is elected.

Yall too easy to fall victims to politicians and their tricks..ย

The electorate need to know for whom they are voting, if it’s a husband and wufe team, brother and sister team, cousins, it is their right to know, unless there is something to hide.

Besides, if Grenville disappears, there will be 100 more politicians to take his place.

Pedant….there is transparency in Canada…why dont you want the same in Barbados, is it because you dont live there.

You need to read my post again, really.

Re the trump post, dont blame me if you get your news hours later.

Maybe yall are there to soothe and massage Grenville…I am not.

  46. Hi David:

I have no financial interest in CGI whatsoever. Neither do I have any insurance policies with CGI. I am not distancing myself from CGI. I was with Nemwill/Brydens for the past 25 years and had no reason to change. I know little about the company (CGI), except that I went to Combermere with Peter Harris – we were classmates in 6th form only.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

What was so hard about that, the document clearly shows it was not Grenville involved in CGI Insurance, which puts the matter to rest…permanently.ย

Northern…believe it or not, I dont google everything, but wanted to hear the transparency coming directly from Grenville, we accuse DBLP politicians of 50 years of secrecy, arrogance, violating the rights of vulnerable bajans and even corruption, why would anyone allow politicians to own their souls even before they are elected, let them come clean and have an honest dialogue before you elect them, bajans are mentally vulnerable and can ill afford 50 more years of secrecy, disenfranchisement and crap.

Look how well that is working out for the 60 million blind fools who voted for trump….total chaos.

So you now have a husband wife team running as candidates in the same political party, ย I believe that is a first, never heard about that in the islands before, it’s something the electorate should know so it can settle in their minds…early.ย

Besides, how is it no one saw the same 2 names and questioned if there was a familial connection, you cannot vote blindly, I asked a question, I did not accuse the Chaubalds of anything

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein briefed senators Thursday afternoon, and he didn’t present a lot of new information on the Department of Justice investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign or his decision to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller to head up that probe. But Rosenstein’s remarks to lawmakers suggested that what had been a “counterintelligence investigation” was now morphing into a criminal one, one senator said afterward.

“I think the shot to the body is it’s now considered a criminal investigation,” Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a former military prosecutor, said as he exited the closed-door briefing in the basement of the Capitol. And Graham said that could impede Congress’s “ability to conduct investigations of all things Russia.” For example, “I find it hard to subpoena records of somebody like [former National Security Adviser Michael] Flynn, who may be subject to a criminal investigation because he has a right not to incriminate himself,” Graham explained. “As to Mr. [James] Comey, the former director of the FBI, coming before the committee, if I were Mr. Mueller, I would jealously guard the witness pool.”

Graham acknowledged that Rosenstein did not explicitly confirm that the department was now looking into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign as a criminal matter. And Repubican Senator Bill Cassidy said Rosenstein stressed that the existence of the investigation itself does not mean that somebody definitively committed a crime. But Graham emphasized “the takeaway I have is that everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as though it may be a criminal investigation.”

Until Wednesday, Rosenstein was the most senior Department of Justice official overseeing the investigation, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions, an active Trump supporter during the 2016 election, recused himself on all matters relating to Russia and the campaign. Then, following weeks of pressure from Democrats and outside commentators, Rosenstein announced Wednesday evening he was appointing Mueller as special counsel heading up the department’s probe. “Based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command,โ€ Rosenstein explained in a statement.

According to Democratic Senator Richard Durbin, Rosenstein didn’t say exactly when or why he decided a special counsel was necessary. “Clearly it wasn’t last night, it’s been a matter of a few days.” he said. The Illinois Democrat added that Rosenstein “kind of rejects the premise that he wasn’t going to appoint one” until pushed to do so by the recent headlines. In the past 10 days, the president abruptly decided to fire his FBI director and then acknowledged that it was due, in part, to his objections to the Russia investigation. News reports in recent days have indicated that Trump also previously asked Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn, who quit his post in January after lying to White House officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador after the election. Those developments have driven up the scrutiny of the Department of Justice probe exponentially.

Rosenstein himself has been under fire for his role in Comey’s firing. He wrote a memo criticizing Comey’s handling of last year’s investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information, which White House officials initially cited as the sole rationale for Comey’s ouster. In subsequent days, however, Trump acknowledged he’d decided to fire Comey even before he read Rosenstein’s memo. And senators from both parties said Rosenstein told them Thursday he was aware that the FBI director would be fired when he drafted it. But Missouri Democrat Claire McCaskill said Rosenstein “was very careful about not going into any details surrounding [Comey’s] removal beause he wants to give Robert Mueller the opportunity to make his independent decision about where the investigation is going.”

Rosenstein’s decision to name a special counsel seems to have helped redeem his reputation as a nonpartisan operative. It was widely welcomed on Capitol Hill, even by Republicans who had long resisted the move. “I have full confidence in former Director Mueller. I think he’s an excellent choice,” GOP Senator Marco Rubio told reporters after the briefing. But Rubio differed with Graham on whether Mueller’s investigation would hinder ongoing probes into the matter by the Senate and House intelligence committees. “It is my hope that there will not be conflict between one another.”

While Rubio said he was glad Rosenstein came to the Hill to brief Senators, he and other lawmakers said they didn’t learn much more than they already knew. In part, that’s because Rosenstein didn’t want to step on Mueller’s toes, now that the latter is in charge. And it’s because he is apparently all too aware of how much senators talk to the media. “He did stress that he was concerned that whatever he said would be made public to the press,” Cassidy told reporters with a chuckle, “so therefore he felt limited in what he could say.”

@Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger May 18, 2017 at 10:28 PM #…You said: “โ€ฆ.there is transparency in Canadaโ€ฆwhy dont you want the same in Barbados, is it because you dont live there. That is a lot of words to say ‘I am wrong and will remain resolute in being wrong’!

It is amusing that you are speaking of transparency in a post filled with nontransparent inaccuracies.

You were very careless to impute associations to Phillips based on one doc which could have been easily checked…EASILY. … Thus salacious misadventure it seems.

We can certainly prosecute any aspiring politician based on the FACTS of their badly crafted platform solutions but to plant doubt from behind a veil of poorly executed accusations is reprehensible… but alas, oh too prevalent now-a-days!

You are WRONG about the Mueller quote. Plain and Simple. Anyone interested can confirm that.

You quoted: “Itโ€™s Now A Criminal Investigationโ€™ Says Special Prosecutor…Robert Mueller, appointed by the Justice Department as special counsel … just confirmed with Republican leadership under questioning that he sees this more as a criminal investigation, and will not treat it as a general intelligence probe.”

This is FALSE. The man himself did NOT speak to or confirm any such thing to Republican leadership. The story mixes the truth of what the Senator said with falsehoods in citing Mueller.

In BIM, being small and far away, we do sorta get our news a whole date late or maybe a few hours later… when it’s coming from another time zone ahead of our waking awareness…so you are definitely RIGHT about that! LOLL….

It does give us time tho not to get caught up in these ‘false news’ palavers! That’s a good thing. LOL.
