Last week, Barbadians were exposed to several alarming political utterances when Members of Parliament (MPs) debated the Appropriation Bill 2017. Barbadians heard frantic reactions to the state of affairs. The Bill was theatrically delivered by MP Christopher Sinckler, arguably, the most unpopular Minister of Finance in the history of Barbados. The gravity of the socio-economic circumstances, and providing few realistic answers, prompted Sinckler to request help as both the economy and society came under the microscope of public scrutiny.

Sadly, Barbadians received the typical false narratives that serve to further divide a polity at odds with itself. The abject polarization that was on show, particularly by Democratic Labour Party (DLP) MPs, appeared disrespectfully desperate. Knowing that they were being seen on television and being heard on radio, the politicians postured and panted; they agreed and disagreed. The DLP MPs accused and angered persons inside and outside of the public gallery.

DLP MPs were at pains to be convincing even if this meant taking political rhetoric and grandstanding to extravagant extremes. By Friday night, Barbadians preferred to filter the folly, frivolity, and farcical ferocity that fanned flames of fury. Put differently, Barbadians although burdened to listen to the debate, readily denounced the unfolding social constructions that were recklessly spoken by absent-minded legislators. The politicians, for the most part, all looked serious although some signalled nothing useful or edifying in their contributions.

The posturing and the discursive practices merely exposed a refractory majority when compared with a more thoughtful minority. These phenomena have produced a cacophony of adversarial approaches and entrenched antagonisms that stretch across Barbados. Surely, with general elections now in the foresights of those gunning for a seat, the caustic tones and insults were anticipated to increase. Such infractions featured multiple times during the debate.

Ironically, the dear loving people made several controversial remarks and displayed strings of irrational behaviour. Barbadians are questioning whether the DLP used offensive statements purely for amplification or dastardly for distraction. Clearly, there was sheer worry by the DLP to the point of rejecting the youth and later pillorying women. There is the perception that a couple MPs crudely reverted to threat and bullying, instead of reasoned and logical statements of fact.

Firstly, Social Care Minister Steve Blackett sought to intimidate more than appreciate the positives of Barbadian youth participating in national affairs. An infuriated Blackett gave a stinging rebuke to the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and the parents of 13-year-old Khaleel Kothdiwala. The teenager had addressed a rally immediately following the national march of disgust on the previous weekend which attracted over 10, 000 persons. Notwithstanding, Blackett stepped into the chasms of stupidity when he showed a lack of reasonableness or clarity of thought regarding parental guidance and support.

Blackett stated that the BLP โ€œhad a young man, 13 years โ€ฆ parading across the stage with or without the permission of his parents, in full glare of all, exploiting the young man.โ€ Shooting from the hip, Blackett made the illogical claim that Khaleelโ€™s youthful presence on stage โ€œis equivalent โ€ฆ to sexual abuse or physical abuse.โ€ What an absurdity! Many persons have since dismissed Blackettโ€™s sinister statement and more generally, pointed out his proclivity for not going after the real targets of sexual and physical abuse.

Ironically, the very Steve Blackett made another disturbing but hypocritical pronouncement. Badly hatched from his pious posturing, Blackett chose the identity markers of religion and racism to wrongfully condemn the oldest political party in Barbados. Blackett contemptuously complained against the strong signals sent to the DLP regime on March 11th. Blackett remonstrated by mockingly praying โ€œthat every single Christian, every single Muslim, every single Hindu get on their knees and pray for this country because the Barbados Labour Party is heading the country down a particular avenue that will cause bloodshed in this country based on how they are behaving and how they are conducting themselves in public life in Barbados.โ€ It is a load! Clearly, Blackett was in a mistaken chamber.

Blackettโ€™s unconvincing behaviour has subsequently done more to refocus the national gaze on the prolonged failings of Cabinet under Prime Minister Stuart than on the Queen’s College student who is presently preparing to fly to Bali, Indonesia. Khaleel Kothdiwala will represent Barbados at the World Schools Debating Championships in August this year. Given Blackettโ€™s sordid judgement and erroneous condemnation, it may be best that Barbadians never again vote for Steve Blackett to sit in the House of Assembly.

With some pull back, although leaving it to interpretation, Minister Ronald Jones spoke and carefully suggested that he was not in Parliament โ€œto condemn the 13-year-old youngster or the parents.โ€ However, Jones did insist that โ€œit was a bit unusualโ€ to see outstanding teenagers take to the civic space afforded, given the politics of Barbados. The Minister of Education contended that Khaleelโ€™s appearing on the stage of the political rally โ€œwould appear to be exploitative.โ€ One can only hazard a guess as to the use or meaning of the term exploitative.

In fact, the DLPโ€™s style of combining partisan invective with a redefinition of words and terms are by no means novel. So, as one moved away from the irate silliness invoked by Blackett, there was but short relief. Next came extreme pills of verbal bitterness from the MP for St. John. Mara Thompson; she contrived a display of feigned caring for the young. She may well have forgotten that her children were present and visible at many cat fights in and outside of the campaign trails in St. John and Barbados. Mara Thompson pompously cluttered in a level of ignorance that does not sit well with all those who became familiar with a teenaged David Thompson.

Damaging and inexcusable, Mara Thompson sunk to a vile low by disgracefully castigating the โ€˜childlessโ€™ females who are legitimate representatives of the people in their respective constituencies. In effect, Barbadians came full-face with Mara Thompsonโ€™s disdain for embracing reality. The public gallery saw upfront her insensitivity towards other women appearing not to be blessed with children of their own. Disgracefully, Thompsonโ€™s resentful tenor offended the youngest Member of Parliament. Thompson had to be scolded and reminded that her more fortunate electoral circumstances, practically guaranteed her a seat in the Assembly. Surely, such luck does not give Mara Thompson hegemony over other women in parliament or across the Barbadian landscape.

The damage was more implicit than explicit. Nonetheless, the hostile attempt to degrade the โ€˜Honourableโ€™ women for being โ€˜childlessโ€™ is sufficiently vexing that Thompson ought never to be re-elected to the chamber. Regrettably, Thompsonโ€™s spineless spectacle reflected an attrition of goodwill. Her spiel of being โ€˜childlessโ€™ was too grave an insult to all the women in her constituency. It was very chilling for men that support the thousands of Barbadian women who never gave birth to a child. Yet, those women are known to have sacrificed in the interest of this nationโ€™s children.

Moreover, the question must be asked whether Mara Thompsonโ€™s childless insult was yet another haughty proposition purporting that women need to have children to be complete human beings? I hope not, for that would be the height of ungratefulness to the Parliament and country. Clumsily, Thompsonโ€™s dishonourable behaviour happened while the DLP is busy erecting a self-determined moral high-ground. Nothing less than a public apology ought to be forthcoming, and it serves no purpose by repeating: โ€œMr. Speaker, I want you to stop looking at my daughters.โ€

In guiding the electorate and people of St. John, we must first reiterate that the people of St. John have been misled and misused for decades by prime ministers and an uneducated Mara Thompson who only believe their jobs as representatives extended to driving through the parish to show their faces and when elections roll around, shout out how neglected St. John and it’s people are….and no more.

Mara’s ugly disrespect and insulting disdain should be the real eye opener for the people in that parish and for Barbados as a whole….the party has used the same ruse so often to deceive these long suffering people, that there was absolutely no doubt in the politician’s minds that the ugliness and disrespect practiced on country people, would work to their advantage again and see them reelected to start the abuse and arrogance toward the people all over again….HELLO!!!……no one is that stupid…ok Mara…not even the people of St. John.

  2. Martin McGuinness, 66, has died

For us, like for most, he had a varied life

Our appreciation is for that life of fighting for justice against a mendacious British colonial super-structure.

Even under British colonialism, and despite the interactions of global liberation movements, the architecture of racism prevent the Irish from finding the oneness of common struggle.

His detractors, including the ugly man, will see him as a murderer

Not as the freedom fighter he was

Not as the man, for all his life, who fought British imperialism in Northern Ireland.

They will not remember the routine torture of his colleagues by Westminster

The illegal imprisonment of his comrades, many of whom were innocent

They will not remember how the British themselves murdered the people, including the women and children, of Northern Ireland, for centuries.

And yes, when His war with the British had reached a stalemate he sued for ‘peace’ and developed a good working relationship with Ian Paisley and the likes.

None of that however removed the ethnic British resentments for the Irish people.

If Martin Mcguinnes was a terrorist, we are as well!

There can be no better life than that which serves others as McGuiness’s was

And indeed death, is the only pathway to eternal life

We trust that the sacred sacrifice of Martin McGuinness will continue to live in all of us.

  3. Well well,
Apart from the personal attack, this is another good post. Maybe I am getting soft.
The key point is that St John is the strongest DLP constituency and it is the poorest. Voters should send them the right message.
I have suggested that the government (Dees or Bees) should move the Transport Board to St John, along with some government departments; it should also incentivise some private companies to establish branches in St John, preferably Four Roads, creating a new town.
One advantage also will be that the flow of traffic in to town during the rush hour will be slightly reduced. The premium site that is Weymouth could then be developed in to residential and commercial units, complete with a gym, tennis courts, restaurants/cafรฉ, and a concert suite.
I remember David raised questions about the quality of the land. That can easily be sorted out by good structural and civil engineers. Afterall, we filled in the sea between the mainland and Pelican Island in the 1950s and as far as I know it has not yet sunk.

It was ludicrous of the DLP to attack the young man. What they should do is give similar exposure to a young person in their ranks. And perhaps then, we would be on our way to getting rid of the poor rakey parliament. Youth should be encouraged not ridiculed for positive involvement.
Anybody who thinks that motherless women cannot be good parents , do not understand our culture and the success of the extended family, that has now all but disappeared.
There are many aunties and grannies out there who never saw a man naked but raised and nurtured thousands of children.
    @ Hal
I have been informed that St John has some of the best agricultural land in the island. I would prefer a modern mixed development: light agricultural industries and affordable housing. Barrow always put St. John last but he gave them very great representation in other areas that he apparently never broadcast in order to protect the identity and pride of those he helped.

  10. I wish people would stop stop saying St.John is the poorest parish in Bim quite untrue, like all the other parishes, pockets of poverty exist, where it differs from the others is that most of the poorest are the progeny of the indentured servants primarily of Irish descent.

Succesive govts due to a lack of a common vision have had difficulties with the terrain of the Scotland district which can be seen by poor condition of the roads but that aside the older residents mainly own the land they are on for generations and do backyard farming or fishing.

The younger ones have some lovely houses and work in the private sector, have their own business or participate in the informal sector legal and illegal.

The only eye sore in St.John is the 2000 odd acres of CLICO lands under cow itch……last week the residents had enough and burnt about 500 acres……

Nothng you say can change the fact that Mara Thompson is an uneducated, disrespecful, insulting, vicious and malicious excuse for a woman, she is the one so exposed herself for the island and world to see, no one made her neglect the people of St. John or caused her vicious mouth to run away with her……she did that on her own…both you and her should read what the people of St. John are saying about how she treats them..It’s all over facebook.

This is not something to be covered up as usual Hal….it has to be confronted and resolved, the people have to get rid of the parasitic Mara….it’s in their own best interest.

To encourage misguided Muslim parents to abuse their 13 year old son at the behest of the Barbados Labour Party is really astonishing. What is next on the Muslim and Barbados Labour Party agenda? Sending another 13 year old child with a suicide belt to a DLP event?

Once these outrageous things start to play out then there is no proper end in sight. Members and supporters of the Democratic Labour Party have to very careful going forward from here on in. Judging from the actions of Muslims in many different parts of the World we are now heading down a very dangerous road indeed. 25. The hullabaloo being raised by the DLP about the appearance of the 13 year old is being politicized by BOTH sides. BU’s position is simple -after listening to the boy answer several questions from David Ellis on Sunday he obviously has a brain and is equipped to reason and communicate on many issues. He is no yardfowl. Would the BU household have permitted him to appear on a political platform, probably not.

Steve Blackett has zero credibility to comment on this matter given his non response to not hold the Child Care Board accountable for two well publicized cases of child abuse.

……if the untrustworthy David Estwick goes with a no confidence…it shows the cracks are wider, if he dont it shows without a doubt he is fraudulent and should lose his seat, he just badmouths policies to get attention….if both or any 2 ministers go with a no confidence…the government is done.

    How ya like that one.

  49. Carson C Cadogan, thanks for displaying your total and racist ignorance for all to see. When I saw that young man on the platform with his parents, I saw a family, not a bunch of Muslims. Who the hell do you think you are even suggesting that they would plant a suicide bomb at a DLP meeting? What do you know, in your rabidly insensitive ignorance, about how Muslims in general behave? I always thought that you were a disgrace, now you’ve proved it beyond doubt.

“What they should do is give similar exposure to a young person in their ranks”

Should I remind you that the young and juvenile persons in the DLP ranks get exposure every Tuesday when they attend Parliament?
