The issue of race is ever present in Barbados, and surely underlies the amazing  public furor that has arisen over the recent crowning of a white Miss Barbados beauty queen.

And so, we now take the opportunity to revisit the issue of racism in Barbados, and to share with the public a number of pertinent questions that Mr David Comissiong, President of the Peoples Empowerment Party, posed to the government appointed ‘Committee On National Reconciliation’ way back in the year 1999.

These questions – as relevant today as they were seventeen years ago – are as follows:-

  1. To what extent does the false notion of Black or African inferiority still infect Black, White,  and Asiatic Barbadians? If this is the case, how do we correct this state of affairs?
  2. Are there Churches, religious practices and theologies in Barbados which foster and / or perpetuate the false and discredited notions of Black inferiority, subordination and dependence on non-Blacks?
  3. To what extent is the distribution of land in Barbados racially skewed and inequitable? If this is so, are specific governmental corrective measures required? Is there a need for “Alien Landholdings legislation”?
  4. Is the education system doing an adequate job of imparting to our students information about the history and achievements of the various racial and ethnic groups which make up our population? Is the news media of Barbados doing an adequate job of providing the majority Black population with news and information about Africa and peoples of African descent?
  5. To what extent are there racially segregationist regulations and/or practices in place in the clubs, beaches, hotels and social institutions of Barbados? Are governmental corrective measures required?
  6. To what extent do businesses in Barbados indulge in racial discrimination in their employment and procurement policies and practices? To what extent is there evidence of race-based business monopolies and unfair race-based business practices designed to eliminate competition?
  7. What is the precise state of the distribution of wealth in Barbados across race and class lines? Is there a need for new re-distributive policies?
  8. To what extent is there evidence that the lending policies and practices of banks and other financial institutions are based on racial considerations? Is there a need for governmental intervention?
  9. To what extent do the major secular institutions of Barbados – the law courts, police force, office of the Governor General, etc – still retain elements of an institutional culture that is alienating to Black and/or working class Barbadians?
  10. To what extent are the foreign films, videos and music coming into Barbados propagating racially demeaning notions and sensibilities?
  11. To what extent is the racist historical tradition of the stigmatization and criminalization of the business activities of small black business-persons still in evidence?
  12. To what extent do we have a sense of consciousness of the great moral wrong of slavery, and of the inhuman cruelties and disabilities that were inflicted upon Black people? Are we prepared to support a campaign for Reparations?
  13. Is there the need for a conscious effort to rectify the imbalance deliberately built into our national culture by investigating, re-evaluating and re-appropriating aspects of African culture?

If the current storm-in-a-teacup motivates us to address our minds to these vexed yet very relevant questions, then something positive would have been achieved!

Q2. Religion is not a good yardstick to measure anything by.

  2. @bookworm

It is a middleclass forming based on a misplaced value system hinged on economic considerations.

  3. well Well;
“there are at least 260,000 black people on the island and much less than 8,000 local bajan whites and everything else…that puts blacks as more than any other group on the island.”

Where did you get these statistics?
You are definitely a racist, based on your comments; there are so many racists who contribute to BU. Why do all of you want to stir up trouble? Don’t you think we should, and could, all live in peace?

  4. @ David
Foreigners in this case is defined as White.

    Why?

I have seen blacks driving around proudly displaying the Maple Leaf flag on their vehicle and on their property.

That is why I highlighted it for you Bookworm. ..these were not public schools…these were very private schools…you do have many options in the US…if ya can pay for them.

“my daughter went on to school in NY..at schools where diversity is understood….at SCHOOLS where diversity is understood.”

And that is why there should be no racism practiced by a small minority of people on the majority or anyone else on so small an island or any island….it stands out.

    Cause when ya look at everyone…ya see 1 head…not 2, 2 arms….not 3, 2 legs, not 4..

……..every one depending on sex either stands or stoops to pee or poop or both, so where is the superiority in that..

The curly and straight hair are temporary, they thin and fall out fast, not to mention they breed lice.

The fair skin dries out and ages fast.., and is highly prone to skin cancer….where is the superiority in that…..

  6. @bookworm

It is a middleclass forming based on a misplaced value system hinged on economic considerations.

    You got that right David!

  7. @bookworm

It is not about the ability to measure by the church but about questioning the clannish behaviour by our dominant minority (dominant economically also).

  8. By the way Well Well,
There is an Africa Channel on CBC T.V. there, you can get your fill of Africa. But when you turn to it, unless someone told you, you would think it is Barbados.Check it out for you obviously are not well informed.

  9. David

That Q1 you highlighted is interesting because back in my day upwardly mobile Pelaus could be found in Rumshops as well as the Yacht Club,Rally Club and such like…..to this day my contemporaries can still be found in the dwindling number of real Rumshops.

  10. Black beauty is different to white beauty and mixes can be even more beautiful

People should love themselves happy fit and healthy is most beautiful

  11. Seems to us that some people would want to ignore all the basic metrics which are the philosophical underpinning of everything there is.

Are can be be be no intellectual existence unless informed by race, religion, class, politics, economy, aesthetics, etc

    Tru dat!
News from Africa is usually laced with tales of graft and corruption. Starvation due to the filtering off of aid and dictators doing their thing.

  14. @bookworm

It is a loose definition, of course other races invest.

Dont be dumb Alvin…if ya leave Canada and go to Senegal or Liberia or Ghana, you are very likely to meet someone looking just like you……

It also happens to European Americans visiting Europe…Canadians visiting Europe…etc.

    Dont be an ass.

  16. Question 5

To what extent are there racially segregationist regulations and/or practices in place in the clubs, beaches, hotels and social institutions of Barbados? Are governmental corrective measures required?

No need to be prolix here. One obvious and topical example is the physical development of the coastline when continues to hamper access to local beaches to the extent non Whites are herded to the ‘’pubic beaches’’. There are others.

“The irony is that in your desire to get rid of it, you are perpetuating it. The way to get rid of it is to leave it behind.”

Bookworm…..any psychologist worth their salt will tell you…ya do not get rid of a problem by pretending it does not exist, by running from it….or ignoring it…ya discuss it, debate it, beat it to death until it is understood.

You do not runband leave destructive social issues behind….you confront them, you identify the root causes and destroy them..

    ……you are way too shallow.

It is not about the ability to measure by the church but about questioning the clannish behaviour by our dominant minority (dominant economically also).

Now that is just it David. I can see the economic dominance but do not see any other dominance. Maybe that is where the confusion in peoples minds is?

We dont seem to have the same problem with T&T economic might in Bim.

It is also ironic that a church that encouraged and condoned slavery is venerated by many descendants of slaves.

Got to go now, back in the am.

Let’s talk about Harbor Lights…aka Harbor fights, a mediocre shitty night club in Barbados,..that does not want blacks having a night out there…they do everything except put up a sign saying NO BLACKS ALLOWED….WHITES ONLY. They actially had the apartheid nerve to name the club Racials….in the 80s…befire the apartheid system was dismsntled in South Africa

These 2 bit bajan whites actually thought it was cute…practicing racism and apartheid on the majority blacks.

These shallow people want to continue the nastiness of racism on the island for generations to come….at all cost.

But it wont happen…there are actually people with high intelligence levels quite capable of putting an end to that dumb shit….putting it down.

“To answer a question with a question. Where do the majority of Whites go to Church in Barbados?”

That question should be directed to those who ‘preach’ the necessity of church going and worshipping a god.

Let GP and our resurrected friend Zoe address that question.

But here is a short answer to your long-lasting query straight from the book of knowledge and all human understanding:
“…it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

You can wager that based on the above admonition the rich white Bajans will be found in Hell with a superfluous amount of blacks attending to their very need of serving milk and honey laced with Bajan white rum and brown sugar.

A good few, though, have decided to buy their way into heaven by making large donations to the Church especially the Catholic Church where all their sins will be forgiven and their insurance policy of eternal life will be encashed in the after life.

Come on David, Bajan white people are not as stupid as blacks when it comes to religion. If it does not benefit them why engage in the god business.
How many drug dealers take the same drugs (opiate) they are selling to fools?

  22. Question 6

To what extent do businesses in Barbados indulge in racial discrimination in their employment and procurement policies and practices? To what extent is there evidence of race-based business monopolies and unfair race-based business practices designed to eliminate competition?

Difficult to prove but BU s aware of some jobs in corporate areas where Whites and Non Whites are given preference.

  23. @bookworm

If a group is dominant economically what other dominance is left?

  24. @Miller

How is it possible to follow your line of reasoning if we accept that Whites handed religion to the darkies back when?

  25. Question 7

What is the precise state of the distribution of wealth in Barbados across race and class lines? Is there a need for new re-distributive policies?

This question is a little simplistic. The thrust must be on how do we promote entrepreneurism. Blacks are known to hoard billions in savings whilst the Whites borrow to create capital by investing in business.

  26. Question 8

To what extent is there evidence that the lending policies and practices of banks and other financial institutions are based on racial considerations? Is there a need for governmental intervention?

Difficult to say except that banks like any other business is established to make money. It is difficulty to fathom in a predominant Black country how a discriminatory lending policy by banks support being the most profitable.

  27. Question 9

To what extent do the major secular institutions of Barbados – the law courts, police force, office of the Governor General, etc – still retain elements of an institutional culture that is alienating to Black and/or working class Barbadians?

    This is a rhetorical question.

  28. Question 10

To what extent are the foreign films, videos and music coming into Barbados propagating racially demeaning notions and sensibilities?

Cultural penetration pervades in all forms whether tourism, TV, videos, Internet etc. What is worrying is an education system and culture that does not nurture a strong Bajan identity. What is the Bajan brand? Our children are more inclined to know the latest north American news rather than local or regional.

    #scary

  29. Question 11

To what extent is the racist historical tradition of the stigmatization and criminalization of the business activities of small black business-persons still in evidence?

This is still in evidence. It is hard for Black businesses to break into certain segments – hardware, printing etc. Those Blacks who show success are railroaded out of the business through collusion.

  30. @Well well

You may consider yourself mixed, but if I have the right person, you can pass for white.

  31. Question 12

To what extent do we have a sense of consciousness of the great moral wrong of slavery, and of the inhuman cruelties and disabilities that were inflicted upon Black people? Are we prepared to support a campaign for Reparations?

The majority have no connection with the plight of our forefathers and those who did the Middle Passage. They have surrendered to euro centric enculturation.

  32. Question 13

Is there the need for a conscious effort to rectify the imbalance deliberately built into our national culture by investigating, re-evaluating and re-appropriating aspects of African culture?

    Yes!

  33. Well Well & Consequences Avatar
    Well Well & Consequences

Bajans…ya dont have the right person….and there is really no passing for white, the people who wanted to go along to get along started that nonsense, the reality is quite different.

  38. There is a cross section of barbadians who called themselves intellectuals who are intent on creating friction and discontent among the races every now and then they arm them self with pencil and paper and scribble a few notes and declares to those who are listening. “Now there you have it” bajans have found themselves in a peculiar state of mind all confused and balled up in tiny knots trying to figure which way is up.
Those lookng from the outside in probably asking how can a population of 99% percent black be disenfranchised by 1% of mixed race.

And what tops it all is to read or hear in the death notices that the deceased individual was a faithful member of the Barbados or Democratic Labour Party .

  41. @ WW&C
“Whiteness” ….is a state of mind.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a brilliant summary of the whole situation.
Bushie more accurately calls it “albino-centricity”….
Vincent is a prime example….. wunna see how comfortable he is in England among his idols?
…and always talking irrelevant shiite about who have ‘white blood’ and ‘black blood’…

Barbados is therefore a majority ‘albino-centric’ country …by far, with albino-centric ideals, standards, and goals. Those who happen to be darker in complexion feel inferior (based on the accepted standards), and happily concede to their ‘superiors’…who happen to be lighter.

WW&C is again right …that this thinking of black inferiority has been reinforced from youth by parents, teachers, church, community and the press. Even now, it is patently clear from many bloggers here, that this level of thinking remains ingrained in most adults.

The reaction to Bushie’s explanation that ‘whites’ are actually the result of genetic mutations of the original blacks – mainly due to lack of melanin, clearly demonstrated this ingrained misconception of white superiority.

The REALITY …as is clearly seen in every area where the playing field is level, is one of black SUPERIORITY. From sports, to music to physical robustness.

But blacks have been chained by their minds now for half a millennium…..like lions trained to be pussies…cats.

  42. About two years ago the traditional official visit of the Governor -General to the home of a male centenarian was put in reverse , when the centenarian , along with his immediate family, turn the tables ,and asked for them to visit Government House instead. Not many had picked up on this then, and since, at the time the Governor-General was in good health, I interpreted this as a blatant snub of the Governor-General. Protocol was allowed to be breached, in a similar fashion to the rules of Town and Country Planning ,in recent times.
Reminded me of the times when persons like the GG and many of us , could not dare enter the front door of a great house.
Even at the highest level ,we still take the boot up our arse, with a “Good one there, boss!!”

  43. “Black” and “white” in Barbados is a social construction. You will hardly find anybody in Bim with skin optimized for sun, but without European ancestors and vice versa Europeans without African ancestors. I really do not know why this discussion here follows the one-drop-rule made in the Southern USA.

However, this society is deeply divided between the establishment living in villas in gated communities and driving the biggest cars and the masses “woreshipping” the establishment. Have a close look who sits in these communities and cars. You will wonder how many people with African descent are amongst them. I assume that 9 out of 10 Audi, BMW and Mercedes are owned by citizens of African descent. The rest are diplomats, expats and a few buzzinessmen.

  47. Well Well:
    These are your words.
“Racism can be unlearned since no one was born a racist”
Why then are you a racist stil? You should have been able to “unlearn” it long ago. And you placed your child firmly on the path to being also a racist by sending her to the teacher with a message. You should have one to the school yourself and had a talk with Ms. goddard. And you should also have taken another trip and spoken to her calmly about the mater in the presence of your daughter. AS you say”… there should be no racism practiced by a small minority of people on the majority or anyone else on so small an island…” Racism should not be practiced by ANY one on the island. Yet you are a serious advocate of racism and discrimination. Why? What is the real reason you are the way you are? And by the way, there have been Black Headteachers at St. Winifred and St. Angelas.
    David,
I put it to you that the minority is not the dominant force economically. We have many many rich Black Bajans. The Blacks are as clannish as the Bajan whites. The problem is that the Blacks do not come together and exercise their economic power. Black businessmen should have been able to get together and purchase BS&T. they should have been able collectively to mount a counter to the Trinidadian attempts, and outbid them . Credit Unions should have been able to put the case to their “shareholders” and obtain the funding to obtain this desirable and lucrative business.
