We need to produce food.
We need to produce food.

My first true commercial farm upgrade to aquaponics (AP) is complete, the first of many more as the commercial farmers are rushing to exploit the labor saving qualities of AP. This type of farming comfortably puts you in the .3 to .7 worker per acre range, amazingly, with no additional labour skill sets required. This reduction in labor is replaced with small, constant energy usage.

When upgrading, priority is to utilize materials from on-site, the aim is to keep this as simple and cost effective as possible. Most pioneering farmers have usable materials from past projects, check. I wouldn’t go as far as to advice on system design because all systems, programs and growers are unique; however experience and good system design when converting are crucial for the continuity of the farm.

As a long time consultant on all things aquaponic and farming in general there are certain dynamics I have become acutely aware of in regards to farm and farmer for a project to be a success. I have some important ones list out here.

Clearly defining expectations and limitations, when upgrading a farm it has a program set in stone that works, and it is usually all in the growers head, they went thru so many labors and taught, re-taught and adjust it so often it’s highly unlikely that the program is written down in any detail, you first must extract that program, it should take 3 weeks observation and working with the grower as the grower usually will now have to document it himself. Each farm is unique and each successful grower is just as unique, in fact I would say unless you asked for it in advance if there is a readily available written accurate program that’s a red flag the grower is green.

Find the core workers, a farm is a very efficient machine and anyone there definitely is not unproductive, at the same time farming is seasonal and the ebb and flow of seasons sees workers coming and going. There will be a set of core workers that are there because they are dependable and understand the program. Usually the amount is .3 to.7 per acre. This is your labor for the new system. Disregard everyone else. Build a relationship with these and draw the relevant information from them also beginning the process of training in building the new system, after all they are your manual labor.

When switching over to the new system your fertilization program is the biggest change, you’re going to have to heavily rely on foliar feeding until bio filtration and root zone activity is converting efficiently enough, which if done right should take one growing season. Pest control should remain more or less unchanged. With this info it is possible to keep a farm in the green during the whole upgrade. If you’re interested in upgrading your commercial farm in the most financially viable way, be sure to contact me for a quote.

  1. What has the Barbados Agriculture Society been doing to change the attitude to agriculture in Barbados?

Is the Minister of Agriculture alive?

  2. David they are clueless!

  3. We would have thought that a small island should stop this irrational separation between food and health. We have both problems to the max. Why can we not eat our health everyday and shut down the sickness institution called the QEH, cause that has nothing whatsoever to do with wellness. The further industrialization of agriculture based on pesticides, inorganic fertilizers, GMOs will NOT feed anymore mouths compared to organic farming but will fill the QEH and Westbury Cemetery as a result of diseases we don’t even understand as yet.

  4. @ David
Muh belly but I hungry. Nesta Marley was right. All of this junk food may fill bellies but we gine still be hungry. A hungry man is an angry man. Say a hungry man……. an angry man. LOL

  5. Recent studies have shown that the lowly soursop has cancer fighting/preventing properties. This is what is means to eat your health daily.

  6. Anybody who is not a vegan or at least a vegetarian, with the possible exceptions of our friends in Alaska and other such regions, is an idiot!

  7. @Pacha

A good point! Just last week the CEO of the QEH mentioned the huge % of occupied beds because of patients suffering with diabetes. At some point we are going to have to confront the need to more aggressively incent healthy living.

  8. @David
As long as people think that money is to be made from the neccesities of life, that will never happen.

  9. I am not afraid to say that I have never heard the term Aquaponics. And I would therefore, encourage those who are more understanding of the topic to redirect me if I seem to be charting a course of ignorance. But from reading your article, I have gathered that your cost effective method of farming, merely stresses the importance of efficiency and labour reduction. Which in itself does a desservice to the people who make their living in this area of employment. But what I found troubling most about your article, is the fact that it paid little or no attention to the health benefits that are to be derived this contemporary method of farming. Who cares about cost management and labour reduction, when the food that we are production causes cancer and many other health relative illnesses?

  10. @David
How many people have to die from preventable diseases before we reach the point of confronting this foolishness? We going down a road where there are going to be more and more problems. And although we see all the danger signs we continue to be relentless as we search for shadows when Pachamama herself has all the answers for us.

“Muh belly but I hungry. Nesta Marley was right. All of this junk food may fill bellies but we gine still be hungry. A hungry man is an angry man. Say a hungry man……. an angry man.”

Recent food shortages in the Ebola-ravaged West African countries should be an early warning signal to Bajans about the need for food security.

What would happen to Barbados if there is an outbreak of some epidemic that could result in the foreign suppliers not wanting to send processed food to Barbados because of uncertainty of payment in forex or through fears of the spread of the contamination.

  12. We can observe the USA right next door which has created a big pharma (business) but we insist on going down the same path. Here is what will be the greatest paradox of our time – a broke government forced to cut the health budget but unhealthy living (junk food) continues at pace. There is a certain inevitability to it all.

  13. David
If obesity is a problem we should start taxing fat people, charging them double to ride on public buses, ban the importation of sugary drinks, tax out of existence firms who make money selling deep fried foods, and so on. Declare war on obesity as a national security measure LOL

  14. So Dompey,….are you finally coming around to recognizing your ignorance? …so why the hell did you not go to google as is your strength? 🙂

    @ Pacha
You are indeed ahead of your time. Why the hell are you not a full fledged bushman? Shiite man!!!
…if only you could get past that anti-BBE fixation (which you unfortunately associate with religion) you would be Bushie’s complete hero….

    @ David
Let Bushie spell it out for you….
This WHOLE world is totally screwed up…..ALL of it!

What we call “agriculture” is just a lotta shiite where semi-literates play around in stupid experiments with pesticides, fertilizers and planting methods that are actually childishly counter-productive.

Most informed researchers today are coming (too late) to recognize that the VERY BEST methods are the natural ones that we see in Nature (as DESIGNED by BBE)
Aquaphonics is simply the adoption of the ecology found around rivers – where real agriculture has ALWAYS been naturally suited.

The local, everyday, NATURAL things that grow around us provide all the medicines that our bodies need, but instead we eat a lotta shiite that was created to make criminals rich, …and then spend what little we have left paying doctors and buying chemicals and drugs to mask the symptoms caused by the resulting chronic sickness….

    Total brass bowlery….

  15. The hypocrisy is that we have no compunction taxing and fining the minibus men.

  16. Pachamama

Your point on cancer is well received but do not be fool by the science which said that diet alone contributes to the development of cancer. Because there are environmental as well as biological factors which gives rise to cancer such as pollution and aging etc.

  17. @ Dompey
You are not qualified to speak on this matter.

  18. @ David
We have an agriculture minister who is a medical doctor. A man who has worked in the sickness industry and still no connection between the two – health and agriculture

  19. Pachamama

This is a little off the topic, but there are certain cancers already within our genetic code and no matter how well we eat, the results will be cancer. Sounds depressing doesn’t, but it is a medical fact?

  20. Pach, you would surprise at the extent of my knowledge regarding this matter. I am talking about the medical end of it! Now, I am probably not qualified
to give an opinion but I can sure is hell voice my opinion.

  21. millertheanunnaki Avatar

    @ Dompey | September 30, 2014 at 9:18 AM |

Why don’t you take Pacha’s advice and stay clear of this topic?
This is “science’ aka knowledge and applicable right across the intellectual biosphere.
It not biased religious mumbo-jumbo in which you find comfort
Although I must admit your narrow book of moral instructions does indeed contain sound advice about health. After all, herbs should be used for “the healing of the nation”.
Bushie would be glad to hear the miller has such a ‘leafy-rich’ mind on this aspect of religious indoctrination.

  22. @Pacha

Ministers Estwick and Boyce are politicians first and first most.

  23. Pachamama

Let me inform your thinking for a brief second Pach: being a medical doctor does not mean that you’re cognicant of the proper nutrition, for example: what can a opthamologist or a podiatrist tell me about the nutrition that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart?

  24. Miller

I love Science and particularly Albert Einstein Theory of Relativity and his knowledge of the Quantum Physics/ Quantum Mechanics and who could forget his equation that brought him international acclaimed E=mc2. And in Political Science I’ve read Karl Marx Communist Menifesto and Newton laws of gravity; Charles Darwin Theory of Evolution which involves the concept of the Survival of the fittest; which brought about the Sociological concept of Social Darwinism; you name it I have read it Miller.

  25. @Dompey
You left our Superman and Batman comics.

  26. Miller, I sense your ignorance regarding the Hebrew Scriptures because prior to the Flood, the people of God eat the Mediterranean diet. It was a diet which contained no meat and an abundance of herbs.

  27. Miller

You have to ask yourself the question: where have we gotten the idea from that the mastication of animal flesh is bad for human consumption. God instructed the Nation of Israel that it was okay to eat animal flesh, but it was to be properly prepared. That is why the Jews to this day, have strict nutritional guidelines on the preparation of meat for consumption.

  28. Miller

Why is it that the Eastern diet is considered much more healther than Western, when the people from the East consume equal the amount or more meat than Westerners? And yet, Asians are reported to have lower rates of cardovascular diseases and cancers when compared to Westerners? Is it the high fat content in the Western diet that is at the root of this problem? Or is it that the Asians consumes a higher plant based content with their diet, when compared to their Westerner?

  29. Good to see the youngster in today’s press planting a gooseberry tree. This where we need to win the fight.

  30. David

The sad reality is, the youngerster should have been featured in the press picking rather than planting gooseberries trees. I vividly remember my grandmother teaching me how to make gooseberry jelly because there were an abundanced of gooseberry trees on her property and too many to mentioned throughout the neighborhood where I lived some thirty years ago. But, if we were conscientious about conservation like most of the developed countries were, we would have to sit here and listen to David’s excitment over what should have been a normality in our present era.

  31. Gone are the days when we used to go down by Hindsbury pond and catch the fresh water Tilapia, Mollies and what we used to called Thousands back in the day? Can I get a witness? That is when the land was still in its prestine state and Biodiversity was at its healthest. Who could have forgotten after the rain had fallen, when the entire place used to be crowded with frogs as for as one eyes could have seen? That natural phenomenon was a direct indication of the health of the Ecosystem .

  32. @ Colonel Buggy
You left our Superman and Batman comics
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
LOL Ha Ha Ha Ha…..muh belly!!!

  33. Bush Tea

You’re about as predictable as an explosion of hot air but I’ll leave you to stew in your own juices. It does well to mask your sense of inadequacy and aid in your quest for veneration.

    @ Dompey | September 30, 2014 at 10:22 AM |

Thanks, Dompey, for your exposé on your intellectual ‘experience’.
What a widely-read lad you are indeed!
Your daddy and mommy would be proud to know that you did not spend all your boyhood time reading Superman & Batman comics (according to the Colonel) while wanking your dicker off.

Its a pity you have not yet used that acquired knowledge to unravel the secrets hidden in the plagiarized myths and fairy tales contained in the Bible.

But how can you describe your Hebrew god as schizophrenic, unstable and irrational in giving his instructions or commandments.
One minute he demands his stupid little creatures to eat plant material as the source of food when he told his biographer to write down the following at Genesis 1:29:
“… God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

Now you are telling us your Daddy Yahweh woke up one morning and changed his mind by telling humans to eat from centipede to lion.
What palaver (or should we say “prolixity”)!

  35. Miller

Apart from the nonsense you have written, which in my estimation falls short of reason and a proper understanding of the Biblical text. I have to ask you this question: now who are you to dictate to the living God what He should and shouldn’t? When God has stated in no uncertain term in Isaiah 55:8 that, ” My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.”

Moreover, I have gathered from our previous conversations that you adheres to an atheistic worldview? So this is my question to: If the morals which governs you concept of right and wrong are non-religious: what source or sources do derive you understanding wrong and right from? In other words, do you have a set of guiding principles which are non-religious, that you can draw from to tell that I was do something which affronts your conscience?

  36. Miller

Remember now, scientific-materialism cannot teach us morals, and the antiquated argument of “(Empathy)” which most atheist use to justify their moral- worldview is left to an individual interpretation. Miller, the fact of the matter is, you have no universal standard of ethics to govern you conduct, and most of what you utilize as a moral- compass is, derive from the teachings of the Hebrew Scriptures.

    @ Dompey | September 30, 2014 at 5:25 PM |
“I have to ask you this question: now who are you to dictate to the living God what He should and shouldn’t?”

I think you should direct that question to Satan a god more powerful than Yahweh. According to the children’s story didn’t he tricked your puny god’s human creatures into following him instead of obeying an all-seeing Yahweh?

Here is my atheistically grounded universal moral principle:
‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.

And while you are at it here is another:
“Anyone entrusted with power must be animated with the love of TRUTH and virtue, no matter whether he be a prince or one of the people”.

Dompey you brag of being a widely read person of high intellectual standing. Therefore you ought to know that one is never too old or long in the tooth to learn. A bit of Eastern thought and philosophy is needed in your quest to broaden your intellectual gene pool clearly dominated by plagiarized childish tales and Judeo-Christian gibberish. That miscegenation of intellectual atoms might just result in a ‘born-again’ (more enlightened) Dompey; or is it Donkey Fenty.

    The following is recommended reading:
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. ~Buddha

  38. Miller

Here is my final word to you brother: it is a towering example of stupidity, to ground your entire concept of reality on a scientific-inquiry. Now, are you cognizant of the fact that an overwhelming majoriy of scientist and religious philosophers, disagree with the premise that God or Religion in general, is best studied as a scientific hypothesis.

Miller, continue to follow your mentors:
    1) Richard Dawskin
    2) Daniel Dennett
    3) Sam Harris
    4) Christopher Hitchen
God has a special Hell set aside for these four brother Miller, I can assure you .

And last but least Miller, listen to this joke: Christopher Hitchen, was about to give one of his atheistic lectures and a young man approached him and said to Hitchen that, ” He wanted to commit suicide, what should he do.” Christopher Hitchen looked the young man right in the face and said to him,” go to my website”. Now, is that the best ya’ll atheist can do Miller?

  39. Miller

I’ll trust the metaphysical God anyday rather than your scientific bullshit which hasn’t been able to teach me how to raise my kids as of yet. Listen! If you have any doubts about the concept of subjectivism, then I suggest you study Emanuel Kant book called the Critique of Pure Reason. In this book, he brigded the gap between Empiricism and Rationalism and in the process, enlightened our understanding to the possibility to these two philosophical worldview. He try to show us how object and subject can both equal reality…

  40. Miller, why do you resort to name calling, when you have met explanatory threshold with respect to your secular humanist worldview? It just shows a level intellectual immaturity on you part, when you allow your emotions to influence your thinking.

  41. Yes, my name is Mark Fenty…. But how does that change the fact that your argument in support of atheism has fallen flat on it fact and under weight of a strong creationist worldview. Good Night sir…

    @ Dompey | September 30, 2014 at 6:19 PM |
“God has a special Hell set aside for these four brother Miller, I can assure you.”

We thought Dante’s Inferno had already taken care of those bastards!

But isn’t Satan in charge of Hell? Seems your god Yahweh is really the all-pervasive micromanager.

    @Dompey | September 30, 2014 at 6:41 PM |
“I’ll trust the metaphysical God anyday rather than your scientific bullshit which hasn’t been able to teach me how to raise my kids as of yet”

That same “scientific bullshit’ is the same vaccines and public health care that you willingly give to your kids and allows you to drive around in your 4×4 while contemplating flying to Barbados for some much needed R&R not forgetting the rum and a piece of black ass either up Bush Hill or, your favourite rendezvous of childhood sin, behind the Glendairy walls. Ye hypocrite!.

  43. Good job Damien, BU is proud about you progress and your willingness to share.

  44. millertheanunnaki
u r a very naughty boy! behave man

  45. It good to see most people know about Aquaponics that it has the ability to produce food right from your backyard with very little labour input from the home owner.

From the comments I can pick up that Barbadians are concerned about the health and food conection, rightly so for good health you must eat good food.

Good food is like religion, once money is involved the chance that their could be problems for the end user sky rocket. The best food in life is free. I hope that we as a culture can see this tech as a upgrade to the old time kitchen garden and use it to grow food in these mordern times, to the benifit of Barbados as a whole.

  46. Miller

Let me simply say this to you sir because you’re beginning to think and act like a three-year-old who doesn’t know when to stop: for God I live and God I willing to die, and If you cannot accept that as my absolute position will too bad for you brother. Moreover, I am not going to fault you for trusting in the philosophy of men because that a right given you by God and laws of nature and the same right Adam exercised in the Garden of Edan, when he contravened God laws. But, as you well know there were concrete consequences to the choices Adams had made.

Nonetheless, when you put all of your trust in the object-world it limits your possibility for obtain Truth with lies in both the Object as well as the subject world Miller. Now, you’re essence is what one would call a Exoteric thinker because all you’re doing is scratching the surface level of reality with your Scientific Enquiry. But an Exosteric thinker like myself, knows that reality can be ascertain in both objective and well as the subjective levels, but unlike you who limits yourself to the sense-data concept of reality, as though it is the absolute medium through which to reach the Metaphysical God. But I know better because I have felt the presence of God and maybe what I am saying is extraneous to the common understanding but it is fact in my reality.

And finally, I’ve said this last night and I’ll say it one more time brother: is shows a level of intellectual immaturity, when one has met and an explanatory-gap/ explanatory-threshold in his ability to articulate his argument with convincing proof, and finds it necessary to resort to personal insults as though it would impact the course of the argument in any meaningful way. Now, I’ll urge in the strongest possible terms that you reframe from shooting the person who brings the message.

  47. Thanks David I keep trying with AP it finaly catching on.

  48. LOL @ Dompey
Bushie gotta give Jack his jacket Domps….. You got Miller by the testes ….if indeed such exists….
Even more shockingly, you have a few posts there that actually sounds logical….

Bushie may have to take a fresh guard where you are concerned…. You like you have the ability to move the ball across to the off stump yuh…..
