I think the Senator would be slightly more credible if he was better informed. Lambasting the BHTA (or particular individuals) about the TIRF (Tourism Industry Relief Fund) when the fund was NEVER intended to provide a means to upgrade plant, but solely to keep staff employed. IF he is going to attack it would be much better if he did some homework, otherwise he just comes across as yet another square peg in round hole Government lackey.
While the industry remains in crisis, surely the emphasis should be on SOLUTIONS not destructive rhetoric.

Be critical of the Senator but none of the elected members with the exception of Denis Kelman BEFORE he was made minister has been as spirited in his defense of the party. He will get some things wrong but it is what we need to hear more of from the party; more interaction, engagement, more communication. He needs to be briefed a little better that is all.
Don’t be so hard on Reggie Hunte: he is only doing what he is supposed to do. After all, every court needs a jester.

Why is every one in Barbados silent about Trinidad and now Jamaica coming into Barbados and destroying our economy.
Jamaica is buying up luxury class hotels and then down grading them here, but those same hotels in Jamaica remains luxury class, that mean that the workers in Barbados salaries are below what they usually receive under the Collective Agreement, and now to add insult to injury the owners of Couples who just brought Almond Casuarina has just gotten rid of the majority of staff , and is bringing in Jamaican hotel workers to teach Barbadian how to do things properly.
We are silent on this, but have a lot say about two consenting adults of the same sexual orientation having sex.
When is Barbados going to wake up and realise that a WAR in going on in the Caribbean under the guise of CSME, the only countries that care about CSME is the smaller Islands, Trinidad and Jamaica only cares about Trinidad and Jamaica.
The Government of Barbados needs too stop ALL work permits for any one now coming in to this Island until the people in Barbados have gotten back jobs, and all items coming in from those two Countries are HEAVILY TAXED.

I do not listen to the Senator Hunte.Neither to John Lovell.I have a problem with everlastingly biased simpletons.It’s not what goes in that defiles,its what comes out.I have said before that David Ellis has become a bore.Now he has brought along another bore to Brasstacks named Hunte.Dennis Johnson continues to make a worthwhile contribution.
The latest episode, which appears to have brought these apparent tensions to the fore is statements made at the BHTA’s recent annual general meeting, held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. At that event, which featured a speech by Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley, BHTA president patricia Affonso-Dass pointed to recent tourism statistics, specifically long stay visitor arrivals, which suggested the tourism sector in Barbados was on a downward spiral.
Noting at the time that tourism arrivals had decreased by about 6.9 per cent when compared to last year, she added: “And in 2012, far from attaining the magical figure of 600,000 long-stay visitors, we only managed to reach 537,640 visitors, down from 572,065 in 2011.”
BHTA Executive Vice president, Sue Springer, also listed her own concerns, including reduced airlift, decreased spending by visitors, and high operational costs.
As if on cue, then came Government Senator Reginald Hunte, who while speaking in the Upper House implied that the BHTA was a bunch of complainers, who were not doing much to help themselves. And now he has been followed by parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, whose own words suggest the hoteliers and others in their grouping were being ungrateful.
Neither the BHTA nor Government is perfect and both deserve criticism where warranted. The two, as representatives of people, also have the right to speak out when they feel they are being misrepresented or wrongly blamed, or when they feel the need to show true representation.
Seemingly trying to crucify each other in public, however, solves nothing, especially when the sector they are both rooting for has been on the decline for some time. In this instance, both BHTA and Government are right, and in a sense both are wrong.
The BHTA is right that tourism has declined, and no amount of excuses by members of the current administration will change that. All they have to do is consult the Barbados Statistical Service and such agencies to get the proof. But we do feel that rather than simply pointing out problems, this key tourism interest group needs to advance more solutions.
Government also needs to be stop being so defensive whenever someone is critical of an aspect of their stewardship, and be more open to alternative views.
Right now it seems that the two are strenuously pulling on the same rope — in opposite directions — while incredulously hoping to reach the same goal, a more vibrant and sustainable tourism sector. And unfortunately that is a strategy which guarantees defeat.

We have too many players in the tourism sector/industry that are selfish and playing games. This has been going on for a very long time. It is time that the players understand…“Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt. There is a need to truly define what it is that we want from tourism and together pursue that goal. We can go no where with all this manipulation and game playing that is going on.
This article is silly. Before on these call-in programs the DLP hardly sent anyone to represent them and people complained. Now someone is their spewing the views of the DLP and this article appears. Stupse. As Kid-Site once sang ‘Bajans Dont Know What They Want’. And it appears to be true. Why didnt the author also state that a representative from the other side (Indar Weir) is also present spewing the views of the BLP?
Also I don’t know how often the author listens to the news or read the papers but you do hear from Ministers. You hear from Donville Inniss, Richard Sealy, Kellman, Sinckler, both Lashley’s; and Kellman (aint hear from he in a while though). What has certain people is that they are note hearing enough of the PM, that’s it.
So whosoever ‘Barbados First’ is you need to go and come again.
From what I understand and please correct me if the information is faulty, but if a foreign entity buys a business in Bim, they are only obliged to keep 10 bajans on staff according to law, this conversation came up when bajans finally realized that Trinidad now owns the majority of vital businesses in Bim, so it may need some research to confirm…………what i am saying though, if Bim has the best education in the Caribbean, why is everyone else in the Caribbean seeming to be more business savvy than the average Bajan, that is the issue i am trying to wrap my head around.

It would be interesting to know the number of employees BS&T had prior to the sale of the company to Neal&Massy and what those numbers are now.Many Barbadian companies of old like BS&T,Cave Shepherd,Goddards made it a policy to employ members of the same family,so that you would find a father or mother and a son or a nephew or a neighbour’s son etc working at these companies.
N&M has shown that its not into tourism the number one money earner in Bdos so they got shot of 3 major hotels.It was a big,big mistake to sell BS&T to N&M.It should have been sold to Leo Leacock,Andrew Bynoe,Audley Jordan,David Seale,COW,Bizzy,Kiffyn,the Goddards Group,John Simpson of JB’s of old,and Foster and Blades of automotive art.These are solid, dye in the wool,hard headed,successful bajan businessmen who are interested in our country.

The headhoncho of N&M is a Trini named Lockjak .He was also chairman of the board of BWIA .He recommended and oversaw the closure of the airline,after its existence of almost 70 years.Barbados lost massively. Barbados was a major hub for the airline,with daily services to Miami,New York ,and 3 or 4 times a week to Toronto and London,Heathrow.Lockjak probably has an agenda for this country and its direction in tourism.For whatever reason,Redjet was allowed to collapse although it was good for tourism in Barbados in particular.Trinidadians have lots of disposal income and have been coming to Barbados in great number since the 60’s and staying at many south coast properties in the summer months.
