BU has been steadfast in its condemnation of the treatment of the two rape victims for whose assaults Derek Crawford was wrongfully accused and charged. BU has been unrelenting in its condemnation of the Commissioner of Police’s racist statements that suggested that the ladies raped could not identify their attacker because he was black. BU has roundly condemned the Director of Public Prosecutions for pursuing the matter against Derek Crawford in the face of statements by the victims that Mr Crawford was not their rapist. BU has called for the resignation or dismissal of the CoP and the DPP and those officials who so insensitively botched the matter. BU is unaware of whether or not the rapes continue to be investigated.

These rapes and the lack of any sympathy or support for the victims by the Royal Barbados Police Force, were widely reported in the United Kingdom and international press, along with the unfortunate statement of the Commissioner of Police and the persistence of the Director of Public Prosecutions in prosecuting Mr Crawford, despite the evidence of the victims.

Recently, there was the incident of Mr and Mrs Prior who were shot at. Apparently the Police and Executive have learned a lesson and BU was pleased to publish the letter sent to it by the Priors. After all, the victims of lawlessness are not just tourists, although, on to the world press an assault on a tourist is news – in whatever country.

The Daily Mail broke the story in the United Kingdom and now there is another story, but this time in St Lucia. In this Mail report, two incidents occurring in Barbados have been highlighted and BU has therefore written to the Daily Mail in the interests of balanced reporting and also to demonstrate that there is strong wind of change following the rape incident, brought about as a result certainly of the Mail report (without which we would have known nothing) but mostly of “we the people” condemning in the roundest terms the DPP, the RBPF, the CoP and the justice system and demanding change.

Here is our letter to the Daily Mail which we, as citizens with a stake in our country have sent. It is sent to the Editor of the Mail and to reporters Paul Thompson and Andrew Gilligan.

“Dear Sirs,

We note with dismay (in both the regional and insular sense) your article published 16 April 2003 and found online at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2309439/Ten-British-holidaymakers-cruise-day-trippers-held-gunpoint-armed-robbery-St-Lucia.html

In the interests of balanced reporting, we send on to you the letter (attached) received by Barbados Underground from Mr and Mrs Prior (named in your report) who were attacked in Barbados. You may wish to publish it.

We read with sadness your report on the rape of Mrs Diane Davies in Barbados and joined you in condemning the response of Barbados’ police officials and justice system, a condemnation echoed by all Barbadians, as you will see from our comments section.

We are assured that measures to correct the official responses to these incidents have been put in place and we are monitoring and will report on these and their effectiveness in Barbados Underground.

Incidents of this kind are, unfortunately, a by-product of today’s society in any and every country. The measure of the country itself, however, is how it responds to these incidents, especially in terms of how it seeks to alleviate the suffering of the victims of these outrages.

It would seem from the Prior case that we are improving.

Respectfully

Barbados Underground”

  1. @David. Excellent. Government is unwise to comment on these matters in the international press, given the official public comments of the CoP and the conduct of the DPP. However, it is vitally necessary that private citizens try to redress the damage caused by those who salaries they pay. You might almost say that the taxpayer is vicariously liable for the conduct of their employees and must seek to minimise the damage.

  2. @Amused

Often time we forget the little things we can do to make a difference. At the bottom of all the BU blogs are links to FB, Email etc where we can pass the message along to help spread the word. In Barbados we tend to sit back and wait on others.

Thanks to ALL in the BU family who continue to send the emails and make suggestions. We appreciate it so much.

    Hyperbole, surely.

    @ David,
You have done an excellent job on behalf of he people of Barbados. For some unknown reason,or reasons, the shot callers in Barbados seem to think, or feel that Barbados is theirs to do with it as they feel, not even giving what’s said out of their mouths to effect all Barbadians at home and abroad.
One thing is for sure, and two for certain, you are going to be on this like white is on rice and I take my hat off to you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKS.

  7. ………..”a condemnation echoed by all Barbadians, as you will see from our comments section.”

Who is “all?” I’m unapologetically Barbadian and I reject this rubbish about “all”. I am at one with the Commish and the RBPF. End of story.

  8. barbados and so many of the Caribbean islands seem to have forgotten
the words of the greatest prophet from that area.
    try to remember.

Idi Amin and Hitler had many supporters so that comes as no surprise.

  10. @Islandgal. You are a constant source of delight to me.

  11. In any private sector organisation if there was consensus that there were problems impeding its success can anyone guess the outcome? Here is the answer, the CEO and Board would be held accountable. In our setup we appoint civil servants for life, or so it seems.

Each citizen must play an active part to ensure our society function the best that is possible. We can’t be passive and pretend that these things will pass by doing nothing. The Mail, Telegraph are two widely circulated prints. We have to fight back. This is about Barbados and NOT DLP or BLP.

i expect (and hope) that waiting is being sarcastic.

  13. We should all remember that the CoP and the PSC are at loggerheads who to relieve him when he goes on holiday. The situation is untenable. One should reasonable expect that the CoP should be able to take some time off given the nature of the job.

  14. David

There will always be naysayers but I think that you are doing a better job for Barbados than the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  15. @David
U are really on the ball here! I have urged these Pol clowns to convene the best and cleverest to solve Bim’s probs before it all collapses. Who cares which party is in power when things fall apart? Dont let the crap have too big an impact, first, foremost and only! These jokers can’t see that the West is in deep shit???

  16. Moneybrain…………At least you know where the west is…………..some people don’t even know that the Caribbean is part of the west…………so we can safely say they also don’t know what lies to the east…………that is what politicians count on to get mindless followers who are then reduced to sheeple.

  17. UM! UM! the problem with trying to correct is one the damage is done ;it is done:

  18. Do you people not understand the Daily Mail’s agenda? Every time there is any reference to the Daily Mail I cringe. Stupse!!

  19. @enuff

What do recommend as a country strategy to combat the bad press Barbados continues to get in the UK?

  20. Well the Daily Mail is currently (as always) showing pictures of British ‘royalty’ vacationing in Barbados. Not so sure the Daily Mail reader is Barbados’ market, but if the BTA used/s insights they would know. As for your question….stop giving the press ‘bad’ stories to pint.

  21. Enuff…………..just how does one stop bad press when crimes are being committed and all kinds of scandals keep happening, this is the information age, I was also reading the Daily Mail and the crimes there are no picnic either.

  22. @ Well Well
How you mean how? Barbados police no longer exist? wtf I hearing!!

  23. Enuff…………I am sure you are hearing the police are smack dab in the middle of internal strife, you know when Bajans start infighting, everything else can go to hell until there is a winner and that could take years.

  24. Caribbean is located in the western hemisphere, that we all can agree upon. But I am having some back- pains coming to terms with idea that the Caribbean is located in West. Now personally, when I think about the West, generally, I think in terms of those countries that are supporting the interest of the United States of America: Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica etc. So with that in mind, it becomes obvious then that those counties in the Caribbean with a leaning toward America would be considered the West. And those countries that lean toward Russia would most likely be considered the East; Cuba, Venezuela etc.

  25. We obviously have look at the terminological as well as the contextualiztion of the word, in order to ascertain the full scope of its usage.

Darwin Dottin is a runaway train long overdue for a wreck. But, just like everything else in this country, we’ll do our best to ignore the problem until it is too late and then lament having to clean up the mess. His mess will be echoing through the halls of the RBPF for decades to come, the embarrassment to the AG and RBPF caused by the numerous lawsuits will cost taxpayers long after the egotistical maniac is gone.
