Owen Arthur, Leader of the opposition (l) Fruendel Stuart, Prime Minister (r)

After the death of Prime Minister David Thompson, no sooner had the funeral ceremony been respectably completed with much deserved ceremony befitting a Prime Minister in Office, when the call was made to the DLP, call a general election.

I said then an election should not be called.  Many here (BU) disagreed and still do judging by recent comments.  I will explain later the reasons underpinning my position.  There was a lot of public sympathy for Mr. Thompson, the circumstances of his death, coupled with his relatively young age were significant factors.  That this public sympathy could be translated into votes was evidenced by the successful campaign launched by his wife – Mara Thompson – now elected to Parliament….I am aware of her previous work in the constituency that not withstanding.  It was felt by a vocal segment that on a larger scale public sympathy could be exploited, thus handing victory to the DLP in a general election.

It is true an election could have been called by Prime Minister Stuart, but allow me to rewind and remind you of the circumstances then.  The DLP had only been in office for a short time and prior to the election it was said by the BLP that the DLP did not have the experience to govern Barbados.  That obviously had not been put to the test over time, it was therefore incumbent on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to put any doubt to bed.  It was also believed there was dissent in the DLP with a myriad of members jockeying for leadership of the Party.

Now to the benefits accrued, Prime Minister Stuart is firmly established as the leader.  He has been able to change his cabinet, positioning individuals to appointments much to their advantage.  Chris Sinckler has improved his public standing so much that he is now seen as a leader for the future.  Prime Minister Stuart has displayed his own style not to everyone’s taste it is true but he has held the ship together through turbulent seas and displayed effective delegation of responsibility, one of the most important attributes of a Prime Minister.

Why was I not in favour of calling an election so soon after the death of Prime Minister Thompson?  It would have been the easy choice to run to the electorate and seek Government not on record but public sympathy…to a possible victory.  I believe that would have been opportunistic and falls short of a Prime Minister of true mettle, who is confident in himself, his Party and those he leads.  Fruendel Stuart is stronger now than he was then and the Cabinet is positioned to fight the next general election not dictated by events but at a time he chooses, on record, merit and the experience of having governed Barbados for some time.

What about the BLP, some have said Mr. Owen Arthur is old, finished, true he is older since the last election but so are we.  I coined the phrase for him “The Master Tactician” and have been chided since for so saying but he achieves set objectives.  Politics is about outcomes not the moral interactions between individual parliamentarians seeking office. Those who are foolish enough to write Mr. Owen Arthur off do so at their own peril, he is still in the ring and don’t you forget it, to write him off would be a mistake of enormous proportions….he is “The Master Tactician“

His skill is now needed more than ever for in the end it might not matter when the Barbados General Election is called.  Mia Mottley stands like a colossus at the gates to the kingdom.  “The Master Tactician will be tested to the limit, how can he get around Mia Mottley – and remember the tide is turning in her favour -before the bell is rung.  Without Mia on side the 10% of voters crucial to gain victory in a Barbados election will be lost to the BLP, that is the dilemma he faces

I can hear the voices now you have not mentioned the economy.  No! I have not, it is important but as important as it is, the international scene has ensured that even the most powerful and influential countries in the world are making heavy weather in these turbulent times.  Little Barbados is being buffeted and there is not a lot we can do but be prudent in our spending and manage or debt.

I did say sometime ago that Integrity Legislation will be the Achilles heel of the DLP Government, as it is a problem within their ability to solve not dependent on outside forces.  I am still of that mind because promises were categorically made by them.  It is the ten per cent of the non-committed voters who can give victory in Barbados, and whilst Mia Mottley might prevent Owen Arthur  from gathering them in.  Integrity Legislation could do the same for the DLP Government, there is time….but only so much time.

  1. @enuff

Do you mean building out the economy on services i.e. tourism and FDI?

  2. Watch PM Stuart’s action and not his words. Remeber he claimed Leroy as his friend, in no lesser a place that the honourable House of Parliament and a few weeks later fired him as chairman of CBC. Also remember the CADRES man had his legs removed at the knees and is still wondering up until today as to why.

Now the PM says he is happy with decent in his cabnet and in the Parliamentary group, so watchout some one(s) gonna get the axe just now.

PM toos one of these young turnks on the back bench and show bajans you aint afraid to use it. Minister Estwick would make a good Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister.

  3. @ David
Are the leading global cities based on services and FDI?

    p.36
“Barbados faces an exciting challenge in building a Green Economy. This is an absolute necessity and a valuable legacy for future generations of Barbadians.”
    p.13
“Our vision is of a society symbolised by creativity, innovation, industry, entrepreneurship and intellectual excellence that benefits all. A critical component of that
vision is supporting innovation in science and technology.”
    p.23
“We maintain that cultural industries must be a key component of the creative economy.”
    p.29
    “Establish a National Sports Academy.”
    p.43
Develop an offshore Oil Programme which will fully exploit any petroleum deposits in our Exclusive Economic
    Zone.”
Have I answered your question? Now answer mine.

  4. @enuff

Forget the manifestos, what did the BLP do in 14 years of tenure to green Barbados?

What did the BLP do to grow the cultural industry?

What did the BLP do to shift our total dependence of services?

Look enuff, the manifesto is not legally binding and a review of those documents belonging to both parties expose a string of broken promises through the years.

BU agrees with BAFBFP we need to sue the political parties when they list that bullshit in manifestos and expect the shepple to yam the crap.

  5. It is easy to be manoeuvred into a position dictated by your opponets, even talk of defeat should not be contemplated by the DLP. Now is the time for them to re-trench and “all pull together” united they will be difficult to beat.

The BLP can make them fight all the way until election day, but they have very difficult decisions to make and I am not sure those decisions can be made, giving an outcome with “sincerity” to convince the electorate.

Scout said: “Prime Minister Stuart is an honest man”, only in Barbados would such a man be pilloried because he does not speak on command. There are quite a few young people in the DLP who are honing their parliamentary skills and gaining experience, if they hold their nerve the DLP can have many years being in Government in Barbados.

  6. WHY is Stuart still Prime Minister of Barbados this morning ?????
WHY is Chris Sinckler not Prime Minister of Barbados ??
WHY has Donville Inniss not come to the fore as he should ???
HAVEN’T I asked these questions over and over on this blog ???
ISN’T it clear that DLP members feel the same way about JUST ASKING these questions??
ISN’T it true that Peter Wickham is now serving the ball back to Stuart after Stuart served him the CBC dismissal volley ???
ISN’T it true that I -JUST ASKING was cussed, called names and labelled by certain myopic people on this blog???

Is KB the best of the lot?

One suspects that in 2012 there will not only be a general election early within the first 5 months of the year but possibly 2 by-elections later on.
The office of top dog in a pseudo “primus inter pares” Westminster system of executive government operating in an ex-slave colonial environment where workers have been conditioned to take and carry out orders and dictates from a dictatorial figure can put tremendous stress and have deleterious effects on the health and well-being of the holders.
Power gives one a high but the downside is that it corrupts the mind, body, and soul in the process.
Doctor’s orders: Take it in your mid 40’s leave it in your late 50’s in our aping democratic political system where alpha “male” is king of the jungle and according to Duffus “all roads to lead to the pinnacle man (pm)”.

  8. Since January 16th 2008 there has been speculation about when the next election will be called and since Thompson died and OSA made his power play that rumour has been even more intense. I have read innumerable threads about the subject and so far the only person who can speak about any authority on the date is F J Stuart and he has kept his cards to his chest.

All the innuendo about what Mia will do is just guesswork but from this corner Mia is a Bee and she will remain a Bee even if her support of the Party is considered lukewarm.

Owen said he brought her to the dance so in the spirit of providing some levity to the thread and well as providing a change from the Xmas music permeating the airwaves she will save the last dance for Owen.

One can rely on the honest words of FS. I don’t think the same can be said for the pretender to the throne. Words and promises are not the same as implementation and action.
The Don would require the support of his colleagues on the farm and he is 3 votes (XXX) short of coming home in first place.

“DO we want Chris -YES or NO ?????”
YES!! BUT ONLY AS MINISTER OF FINANCE & ECONOMIC AFFAIRS FOR THE DURATION OF THIS SESSION OF PARLIAMENT!!
If the Dems were to be re-elected with FS as PM,CS will not be in charge of Finance. FS would be emboldened by his electoral victory and with this mandate appoint his deceased friend’s brother to the position of exchequer as promised in the “time longer than twine’ compromise.

  12. @ david
Lawd you asked a question and I answered, now you shifting. The promise of a Green Economy was made in the 2008 Manifesto, but prior to that there were incentives to make homes and hotels more energy efficient as well as concessions on hybrid, solar cars etc in the 2006 Budget. What about the joint effort with BL&P for wind farm at Lamberts, fuel cane project?

You romanticise the issue of economic diversification when truthfully it is not an easy undertaking, worse when you lack the physical, financial and human resources that are necessary. Diversification requires FDI too!!

    PM, call elections NOW

PEP, your campaign should be honest and direct: (a) both major parties have been failing to fulfill their promises on key items such as integrity legislation and taking the people for granted; (b) your objective is NOT to control the house, but to hold the balance of power, supporting the minority BLP or DLP that is willing to move ahead with the key outstanding items, with the ability to shift support or force an election if the two main minorities are acting contrary to the interest of Barbados.

  15. @enuff

Do you understand what a green economy entails as well as transforming a fossil based economy to an alternative?

  16. Barbadians are too in love with the BLP and DLP concept.

Life will go on by switching from one to the other until death do us part.

  17. @ David
More than you may think, and that is why I know many talk rubbish on here regarding a green economy. Aren’t alternative energy and clean transportation parts of a green economy? What about the restoration of the Scotland District of which you have little faith?

  18. @enuff

If Greenland Landfill was not deposited in the bowels of the Scotland District maybe many would have faith.

  19. @ David
That don’t dispute that they something!! What about water tanks as part of of condition for planning permission?

From what I have seen of Fumble Throughit, he is an honourable person, who has a great command of language, an air of dignity and a considered way about him. He keeps himself to himself and is also an upholder of tradition (ie keep CBC in public ownership, keep all education free, don’t cut public jobs etc).
I advise him to take the offer of retirement from the job on health grounds and make way for someone who will do something – anything!
I also know just the job for him. It requires someone of exactly his skills – honour, oratory, dignity, tradition.
Make way for the new Governor General!
    Only joking…….

  21. St George’s Dragon”he is an honorable person, who has a great command of language, an air of dignity and a considered way about him.”

I guess Bajans need a “thug” for a Prime Minister.

I will admit that The PM seems to have a health problem and should be totally selfish, resign and enjoy the rest of his life.

  22. St George's Dragon Avatar

Serously, my real point was best made by quoting from Bardodos Today:
“… there was a general frustration with Stuart’s seeming unwillingness to make assertive decisions”.
If there is one thing you need from your ultimate leader, whether its in a company or a Country, it’s the ability to make a decision, and as I almost said above, any decision.
Barbados is not in a healthy position at the moment. Some difficult decisions need to be made and I don’t think many people have confidence that Fumble is the man who can make them.

  23. The BLP has succeeded in removing the eyes from the disunity within their party to focus on the DLP. There are some slick operatives like Antz and Just asking who use this blog skillfully to promote persons within the DLP to basically create confusion

Take the promotion of David Estwick as Deputy Prime Minister. As soon as he is promoted the Gun Issue would be used against him.

I hope he succeeded in his anger management sessions. I am disappointed in him as nothing creative has happen in Agriculture since he took over. Agriculture should have been the industry to take Barbados a little further out of this mess by cutting down on the food import bill by the planting of more food locally. Our scarce foreign exchange should not be used to buy any non-essential foods from overseas.
The government own many large portions of agricultural land that they could lease out to the boys on the different blocks to produce food under the directions of the many doctors on the Ministry of Agriculture staff.
No, all we are hearing is he should be Minister of Finance. What is it about the Ministry of Finance that if you do not get it you cannot become a dynamic Minister Like Michael Lashley.

  24. @ Clone

‘Agriculture should have been the industry to take Barbados a little further out of this mess by cutting down on the food import bill by the planting of more food locally.’
    ———————————————————————
    Really?
Here’s an excerpt from the Central Bank Report:

“At the same time, spending on imports rose because of increased prices of fuels and other commodities……Even though imports of gasoline, diesel, fuel oil and aviation fuels were down by between one-half percent and 11 percent in volume terms, price increases of up to 42 percent meant that the fuel import bill was up by about one-third. Over the first six months of the year, the prices paid for imports of corn, wheat and soya beans had increased by 46 percent, 51 percent and 27 percent, respectively.”

Not so sure planting more okras, cucumbers and peppers etc will get us too far.
What is so dynamic about Minister Lashley? Building Coverley Villages?

  25. @ JUST ASKING

Christopher Sinckler is not PM becuase he is not PM material and does not have the majority support of the parliamentary group. The bright guys and girls in the group ain’t following any slow learner from Garrison Secondary school. The only ones foolish enough to follow him into the political graveyard is M. Lashley, Boyce, S. Lashley, Mara, James Paul and Jones.

Sinckler to Foreign Affairs, retire Maxine.
    John Boyce to Agriculture
Estwick to Ministry of Finance & Economic Affairs and Deputy PM.

  26. and PM take over Public Works.

  27. Antz

You are disrespecting many Barbadians who have been to the newer secondary schools of Barbados. Why are you calling them slow learners? Are you one of those ignorant Bajans who look down on others because of school attended?

Forget about that because most of the young people of Barbados went to the newer secondary schools which is a large voting bloc

    Enuff
Minister Lashley record of getting houses built is there for the Barbados public to see. For example at the corner of White Park road and Stuarts Lodge, Carrington Village. Do not speak about the money was left there by the BLP because for six years the steel was left exposed to rust at White Park

  28. Some advice for Freundel: The first two verses of the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
    If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;

  29. DONT you know that it is really a shame to describe our next Prime Minister as a slow learner based on the flimsy reason given ??
WHEN will this nonsense of school this and school that stop ??
IS it because of desperation that you resort to the notion of “old school tie” ??
ISN’T it a shame/shame/shame that we can have such a reference in 2011????
ISNT it the height of assholelory to expect every child in the island to go to one school and if s/he did not go s/he is a second class citizen???
HOW frigging stupid can we get ???
IS intelligence limited to only a doctor or laywer ????
ARE we not passed this racist /classists notion of elite schools that was skilfully put in place by the English colonizer???
IS this why Zoning has not happened because imbeciles , selfish and ignorant dont want it to happen ????
WHEN will this shite end nuh ????
ISNT it true that all it takes for a leader to do is to be able to work with people??

  30. There are some slick operatives like Antz and Just asking who use this blog skillfully to promote persons within the DLP to basically create confusion
    ————————
    AM I a slick operative ????
DO you know that I am here blushing ??
WHY cant a person express an opinion without being labelled ?
DONT people realize that the information age is in full effect and gone are the days when people were kept mostly in the dark and Massa had all the information which he horded so as to project himself as God ???
An operative for who or what ??
DO you know that if I am an operative, it would have to be for this country that I adored — Mi Armour ???

  31. @ Clone
Country Road, Stuarts Lodge, Valery, Fordes Road etc were all being readied for starts/restarts in the latter half of 2007!! What Lashley what…stupse. Why do you think the BLP cleared NHC debt in Nov, 2007? That travesty called Coverley Villages, however, is his original idea!!! Has BWA made one single connection yet?

  32. Based on the level of political discourse it is very clear that Barbados has the exact quality of leadership that we deserve.
Our whole world is falling apart, and our main concern lies in which of the two sets of incompetent ‘third class jokers’ who constitute our political parties – (precisely because this presents their only chance to be “somebody”) ..can win an election…
A party political pissing practice contest…

How about conceptualizing a national plan of action to address the obviously imminent collapse of tourism?
How about a strategy to ensure that we have basic access to enough energy to at least pump water, when regular oil shipments become a thing of the past.
How about basic food supplies and plans for emergency local production?

What real difference does it make if doltish Fumble, mis-deposit O$A or any other political joker wins the next election? Except to record for historical purposes which exact set of idiots led us all to our doom…?

MME? GP? Wanna come back and help Green Monkey muh….

    @ Hants
If you are saying that North Americans want to go to warm countries for their holidays, then as long as Barbados is the only country available, I guess you are correct.
The only trouble is, I can think of a few more – and their labour costs are lower than ours, so holidays there are cheaper.
I won’t mention the increasing crime figures and the impact that could have on tourist numbers.

  37. Sinckler’s rise had nothing to do with which school he attended or whether or not he is a fast or slow learner, as a matter of fact he is a slow learner. His rise in politics came about when Cammie Tudor manoeuvred him into the post of Personal Assistant to P. M. Erskine Sandiford for favours he had done to Cammie. Now you would understand why he is Wickham’s choice.

  38. The leaked CADRES poll is just a continuation of an effort to land Sinckler as Prime Minister, remeber the last poll on the front page of the Nation naming him as the most popular DLP leader nationally?

The focus of the PM’s attention now does not go beyond Michael Lashley, John Boyce and Chris Sinckler. Somebody going to have their head lopped off in a show of strength from Stuart.

Make room on the back bench fellas someone coming to join wunna.
