It is the penultimate weekend before the big Crop Over do. There is so much happening in Barbados by way of Fetes, Calypso Tents, Pic of the Crop Semis, Euphoria next week, Machel Montano’s big show at Llaro Court car park, Square One reunion at Kensington Oval, Brewster’s and Pork Limes and the list goes on. The BU family wish the festival well given it significant contribution to the national coffers. As you all can see from the video (seen above) we are showing our age and make no apology for it. The Mighty Grynner’s presentation is vintage, while we appreaciate that the younger generation have a right to listen to what they heart’s desire, the BU household does not have to listen to the crap we have been watching on Bajantube portrayed as music :-).

Have a great time everyone and let us hope John King, Gabby and Kid Site make it to the finals if not, may God have mercy on all those in our age group who have made tentative plans to attend the do next week!

  1. Generations all have their own music.

  2. Bajan new crop of calypsonians are becoming thr laughing stock of the region. If the whole festival is not revamped, just like the jazz festival , we’re going to find ourselves lagging behind most of the compitition in the region. I”ve lose interest in the festival. I used to be up front in all tents and finals.

Could not agree with you more scout. Young calypsonians dont understand you are respected when you first respect yourself. Why the wholesale effort to sing like a Trinidadian? You cant. Listen to Biggie Irie, RPB, MADD, Allison Hinds, Rupee, Ras Iley and the ones who sing in local parlance with genuine feelings. Their songs sell in and out of Barbados because they are not pretending to be somebody they are not. The young singers are crying out for guidance. Unfortunately there is none on the ego driven dog eat dog cultural scene.

  4. It looks like somebody is in trouble at Barbados Free Press. Clive is MIA wit some other woman and they are fighting on the blog about where he slept last night. Crop Over Time!!!!! 🙂

  5. Is it a dream? Did Gabby and Site fail to make it to the final?

It sounds so stupid when these fellows try to sing like Trinis. One of the reasons why Rihanna is so popular is because she’s herself. She doesn’t try to sound like anybody else and that’s unique. On an interview recently, she was asked where she learnt that accent, she said she was BORN with it in a little BEAUTIFUL island of Barbados. The Merrymen for years have been popular because they are themselves, why should our young entertainers try to sound like somebody from “away?”

  7. PLEASE NOTE THAT

    I am ASIBA-THE BUFFALO SOLDIER-

Somebody else is using the handle BUFFALO SOLDIER TWO and creating confusion as to indentfication.

I have chosen to indentify myself by name, a name that has been registered and it is legitimate
and recognized . People can identify me and I have done this because I have nothing to hide. I will not make inflammatory or untruthful statements and I am open to anyone challenging
    my statements.

    Please BUFFALO SOLDIER TWO———
If you care to please change your handle to avoid confusion. I have a hard time being mis-understood and being accused of THINGS THAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ALREADY.

PLEASE DONT MAKE IT HARDER FOR ME

  8. Maybe Kid Site is being punished for the fraud matter before the court!

  9. I am not one for competition and if I had my way longtime ago I would have scrapped the competition and replaced it wth a music festival. You dont need a competion with rules and guidelines that people who are supposed to uphold them ignore anyhow. But you have a competition and something is better than nothing.

The calypso competition in Barbados needs to stop judging artiste and start judging songs. Songs must not be judged by topic or tempo. A song is a song is a song , fast and slow there are all songs. Any topic as long as the execution of the song and the presentation by the artiste meet the citeria which should be well defined and set out, should be given equal opportunity. Right now if you sing certain topics , such topics are ignored. An untempo calypso should not be dismissed as party and ignored as a competition song.

Judges need to talk to the calypsonians, The artistes should be told what the theme is for a particular year and how one should treat the theme because this is an intellectual exercise, it is just not entertainment only. Constant consultations between artistes and judges/administrators is important to the building of this thing. We have a responsiblity to nuture it and care for it. We cant just leave it up to chance

The semifinals should be moved from Friday afternoons to Saturday and the finalists increased to 24 or 30

We went to the gymnasium Friday and again people treated like dogs. Thdey say the doors would be open from 5PM but we had to stand up outside till 6.10PM while the police use sniffer dogs and sound checks were made.

Nobody cares about treating the paying publice NISE
