Egan-Chin/News/Charelle Carroll with Aunt Katharen Drakes.

The Nation newspaper reported in its 15 March edition that 8 year old Charelle Carroll was seriously injured in an accident while crossing the ABC Highway on the 4 February 2008, while in the company of her friend and cousin. Unfortunately Charrelle received brain damage but despite the best effort of the local Queen Elizabeth Hospital there was swelling of the brain which has caused complications. A plea to the public to raise funds to enable Charelle to travel to the USA for urgent medical attention has turned out to be a painful process. It really should be of concern to Barbadians that a young child’s life should be placed in jeopardy while her poor parents run around Barbados begging for donations.

In a world which is often characterized by things which are negative we are pleased to report this morning that there is HOPE! A family friend of the injured girl Angela Moses appealed to the Downstate Medical Center in New York for help, and the hospital agreed to take Charelle as a patient. It appears from this report that she was flown to New York on Thursday and the hospital has already started to ‘evaluate her injuries and working on a treatment and rehabilitation plan.’ For this little girl who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident she has shown that she has the will to survive.

On this Easter period when Christians remember and celebrate the great sacrifice that Jesus Christ gave to mankind, the BU household is heartened by the actions of all those who have reached out to save the precious life of Charelle Carroll. May God continue to walk by her side. We also take this opportunity to appeal to motorists in Barbados to exercise caution on our roads. Equally we appeal to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that intelligent planning go into how our road and traffic management is engaged.

Happy Easter to Christians everywhere.

  1. I wish this strong girl all the best and hope that she will be able to make a grand recovery. I will pray for you and your family. The Lord is good and he help those who help themselves. Your strength shows that you are trying to help yourself.

  2. God speed to the little girl, and hopefully this time next year we can look back and say what a wonderful world this is.

  3. Luckily this story has turned out positively, I hope that the driver in this story is held accountable. I am so tired of the arrogance that some persons demonstrate whilst behind the wheel on the roads of this country– what will it take for these persons to wake up? Now there’s a segment of the population that deserves to be deported!!!

  4. Well said, GreenBB, furthermore, ‘pronounced dead at the scene’ but is still alive today!!!!

I find that very, worrying!! Anyhow, not my problem!! Thank god, I don’t live there where they know it all already, anyway!!!!

  5. Recently, under a thread entitled, “Rihanna Gets Reception Fit For a Queen,” I submitted the following:

“Thank God for White Barbadians like Andrew Burke. If it were left up to Black Barbadians like Rihanna and her supporters, most Black Barbadians in need wouldn’t get “jack,” as African Americans would say.”

I was right. The government and people of Barbados recently got together to throw a huge party, complete with lavish gifts, for super rich Rihanna, but had no interest in helping the poor Black girl, Charelle Carroll, get medical treatment.

Rihanna herself, recently stepped forward to try to help a well-to-do White American attorney, who is dying of cancer, find a bone marrow donor. She supposedly has a charity to help children around the world. Yet Charelle’s family had to beg for money which was not forth coming.

CO Williams Construction, Simpson Motors, and Parliamentary Representative Toppin donated less than half of the $8,000 needed for airfare to take the child to the U.S. for treatment, according to the Nation. I think CO Williams Construction and Simpson Motors could have donated more, but at least they donated something.

Shame on you, Bajans. You are willing to spend time and money worshipping celebrities who, at the end of the day, do nothing tangible for you. You are willing to spend time and money helping people in foreign countries, but when it comes to helping poor, Black Barbadians in need, you apparently have no time or money.

  6. The Rhianna reception ad crossed my mind as well…I really think that each and every person in Barbados could give just a bit in these situations, but unfortunately now there is too much greed at every level of society. I hope that this changes.

  7. The People’s Democratic Congress (PDC) expresses the hope and satisfaction of little Charelle Carroll getting the best possible medical treatment at the Downstate Medical Center in New York, USA, and thereafter with the grace and help of the Almighty of being able to make a steady recovery from such an ordeal.

Also, at this time of Christian Easter solemnity and penitence, let us, therefore, as Barbadians, keep this sweet and loving little girl, her family, and her friends in our thoughts and prayers, and let us help or continue to help her and her family in whatever ways we can. Almighty Bless!

    PDC

  8. I don’t want to get, deeply, into this one but please don’t criticise Rihanna, unfairly. I fully, expect that had SHE been available she would assist this young lady, if the authorities, could n’t or might do, anyway!

Please don’t insult my girl! I’m one of her biggest fans and don’t desire to insult you! Please don’t provoke me!

  9. Shame on you, Bajans. You are willing to spend time and money worshipping celebrities who, at the end of the day, do nothing tangible for you.
    …………………………………………………………………….
Miss Critique is back on the Rihanna issue, but while at it, I would like to know how much you donated.

  10. A month doesn’t pass that there isn’t someone in need of assistance for some serious health concern. I often make some little contribution but this never seems significant. I often worry that if such problems were to befall me or my family that I would not be able to afford the kind of medical service that would be required…but for the Grace of God there go I.

However, I must say that in the light of these on-going needs that the gift of the land at Apes Hill to Rihanna , as well as the profligate spending on the Cricket World Cup, makes me question the priorities of this country’s political leaders.

I am aware of the quiet, unpublicised generosity of such people like K. Simpson and C.O.W Williams but isn’t it time that in this muti-billion dollar economy our political leaders find the will to lead the populace in establishing some kind of assistance fund/mechanism for citizens who are in need of medical services not offered here.

Let’s assume that there are 100,000 employed persons and on average they could contribute on average $50/month ($12/week) for two years, that would work out to $120, 000, 000! Easier said than done I know but that would be our target $1,200/ employed person over two years to buy a little more peace of mind .

  11. Owen gave US $150,000.00 of his personal savings to Cricket Legends…..hmmm.

  12. I heard of the incident when it initially happened. I wish the little girl well and hope she recovers quickly. An email was sent to the organization of which I am a member requesting help. A response was given but nobody got back to us. I am sure Barbadian organizations here in New York would not hesitate in contributing to make sure she gets the best medical treatment. If any one knows the spokeperson (s) for the family you should encourage them to contact the Barbados Consulate in New York (212) 867-8453 which would in turn contact the Barbadian organizations.

  13. Eight year old gets knocked down crossing a motorway – I also, have to wonder if people are being responsible enough in Bim, in looking after their children! After the hullabaloo, her parents might well face charges and perhaps, rightly, so!

  14. Bimbro, are you suggesting that children should be chaperoned 24/7? Are you not aware that both parents in Bim have to work to put food on the table? Becasue a child is walking on a roadway does not imply neglect.

I think Barbados should start a charitable campaign like our UNITED WAY in Canada to raise fund for these instances where medical care has to be sourced abroad. People and corporations would be asked to pledge what they can afford, either in lump sum, or by monthly payroll deductions. A charitable board should be set up to assess cases and dispense funds as required.

When I worked I donated every year from its inception. If I got a 5% annual salary increase, I increased my contribution by 5%. The donations are tax deductible and when I retired, my contribution was quite sizable.

Now I volunteer my time and give at the door when the canvassers come.

  15. Please don’t allow Bimbro and others like him/her to hijack this thread. Positive responses, like the one from Tony Hall, are resulting from this thread. Everyone knows how Bimbro is. Ignore him/her for the benefit of the child.

I have been trying to avoid posting on this site because of the foolish behavior of many, but when I see a tragedy or injustice like what I have seen surrounding this case, I have to say something.

  16. Pat (Bajans), it was n’t an ordianary, road, as I understand and although it may be normal in Canada for people to cross motorways, it is n’t in the UK, and I don’t think should be, in Bim, either!

And yes, I think that ten is too, young an age for a child to be crossing a motorway, or ANY age!

  17. Thanks, Bajan Girl, I wish that people would ignore you, too, but furthermore, I wish that I could see what was so sensible about YOUR post!

I don’t think I’d be very happy with my mother/parents if I were the little girl concerned, but she can’t speak for herself, at the moment, can she, because she’s lying half-dead somewhere, probably because of the actions of a dumb-ass mother, like you!

  18. If there is anyone who is aware of the current condition of Charelle please keep the BU family in the loop. For some reason we can’t shift the image on this blog from our mind.

To Bimbro we agree with Bajan Girl please have a sense for time and place. This is one topic that the usual rhetoric will NOT be tolerated!

  19. Sorry for offending your sensibilities! I was thinking of the little girl!

  20. I have been trying to avoid posting on this site because of the foolish behavior of many, but when I see a tragedy or injustice like what I have seen surrounding this case, I have to say something.
    ……………………………………………………………………..
Come on David, Bajan Girl is simply trying to garnish a platform to ridicule Rihanna. Unfortunately, she is simply riding the shirt tail of the poor girl who last her life while crossing the road.

But David, I have a fundamental problems with highways that divide communities. That stretch of road resembles the St. Barnabas area, where school children and elderly people have live-threatening challenges in getting across such a wide road. But again, the powers that be are only looking at the transportation aspect and forgetting the foot patrols, alias pedestrians.

  21. the poor girl who lost her life while crossing the road.

  22. If you must know, I, in fact, as a Barbadian, am extremely embarassed that (a) her family had to go running around Bim in order, unsuccessfully, as it happens, to raise funds to afford this little girl’s operation, in the land of the CWC luxury-stadium, motorways and with aspirations to be a first-world nation! You may not be, but I am extremely embarassed, by that fact! Then somebody OVERSEAS, had to take pity on her, like we’re some tenth rate, backward, african, so called country, cap in hand!

Then, you ask me to keep quiet! Perhaps, that’s why nothing gets done, in Bim!

I care for all the children using Barbados’ roads, as well as those, yet to do so!

  23. I read some of the comments on this blog. Some persons are blaming the parents. Why? Children all over Barbados travel the streets when they leave school. I did it when I was going to primary school. Blame the driver of the vehicle who should have been cognisant of the fact that at a certain time of the day when he/she is travelling near a school caution should be uppermost in the mind. However I still hope someone on this blog can contact anyone who knows the family. I know for a fact that organisations here in New York and the tri-state area will be willing to help.

  24. Some parents are too, lax in the attention which they pay to their children – that’s all that I’m saying and, it may not seem odd to you, but a child crossing a MOTORWAY, ON FOOT, would be unacceptable, in most countries!

I’m not surprised that Bajan Girl and Pat, are unable to understand, that!

  25. Bimbro, you have not been in Bim lately, so you would not know that there is no other way to get home unless crossing the road. In developed countries there are PEDESTRIAN OVERPASSES, so that one can get to the other side of the road. I am yet to see them on Barbados’s highways. One was installed in St. Thomas after several children lost their lives and others ended up disabled, after being struck by vehicles, while walking to school.

So, lay off the parents, since you do not know the lie of the land. It is like blaming the parents for the accidents.

  26. Can anybody tell me how I can make a donation. Ineed to give something to her family no matter how small.

  27. Every time something like this happen, I will hold Owen Arthur to the words which he uttered; I will blame him.

I will blame him for the MP who sat under his watch and got fat, greedy, greasy and abusive under his reign, with out driving a stroke.

When will the politicians – who incidentally are the ones WE elect, learn to listen to the people.

The problem of people crossing the highway from Spring Garden to Warrens is a recurrent and awful problem with people paying dearly with their lives. Every day countless of people cross those roads with racing traffic just to hopefully get where there are going.

Yet the BLP sat and tra-la-la-ed stooped and padooped on the whole stupid issue of flyovers when the citizens of this nation lives hang in the balance for the lack of important overhead walkways to cross busy highways.

Was it a lack of funds – maybe, because we got
    Barney’s Crusie Ship Oval (Kensington)
    Polo fields and Golfing greens
    Barney got his mansion
    Dale got he yacht
Owen got he private bank accounts.
Nope !!! certainly not for the lack of money in the economy.

Perhaps it is because the previous Government was – according to Barney Lynch – 90% goat and 10% rope. They should all be shown the ball that knocked down Nelson. Stupsse.

  28. Tony Hall,

Ronald Toppin, MP for St Michael North, in Cave Hill, St Michael should have the information you need regarding a contact person for Charelle’s family. Charelle’s aunt and caretaker, Katharene Drakes, was with him during one of the latest appeals for help, according to the Nation newspaper.

  29. JC,

An account has been set up for Charelle Carroll at Scotia Bank under her caretaker’s name, which is Drakes.

  30. thanks bajan girk

  31. girl sorry

  32. i wish all of you knew what really goes on in grenville way cave hill st michael(charelle’s address) she never deserved to be in that position but life has a way of working out imagine not seeing your dad since your mom died an if you cry in hurt for you mom or dad you aunt beats you ,your cousin unfairs you she had a hard life in barbados so if someone says that her guardian deserves to see prison its no lie, being hungry at 8yrs old and running around all day not knowing where your next meal will come from, an your guardian has money but will not buy nothing for you and your brother to eat , but when you get seriously hurt your aunt is at the hospital crying TEARS OF DECEPTION please keep your defending comments to yourselves ,because you are all making a criminal seem as though that their crime of neglegance, abuse an starvation seem right GOD BLESS CHARELL AN KNOW, AN REMEMBER THAT WE HERE IN BIMSHER LOVE YOU, AN FEEL YOUR PAIN .an to you out there in usa life is not how it seems we in barbados we,try our best to help eachother but greed leads people like her guardian to do what she did, dont bash OWEN he was not in power when she got struck down ,don’t add politics to this story please it is not that kind or issue i want you all to know that we can only do so much to protect our little isle so thank you for understanding.GOD BLESS YOU ALL

  35. The Barbados Underground (BU), on the 22 March, 2008, ran a blog entitled – HOPE LIVES ETERNAL – that featured eight year Charelle Carroll’s involvment in a serious life threatening car accident, as she was crossing, in the company of a couple other younsters, the Lodge Hill, St. Michael stretch of the ABC Highway, on Monday, February 4, 2008. So serious were these injuries that she had to be taken from the QEH – where she stayed for about 6-7 weeks – to the Downstate Medical Center, New York, for urgent but costly medical attention.

Ever since the news of the accident and her hospitalization at both medical facilities many Barbadians, of course, have been having her and her family in their prayers and wishing her a steadfast recovery.

Well, it bring us great pleasure to report the news out of the Downstate Medical Center, New York, concerning little Charrelle’s medical condition and progress, being that she is able to recognize many more things and people, that she talking again, she is eating on her own again, and that she is being helped to walk. It is said, too, that she really wants to be back in Barbados to spend her birthday. This information was given this afternoon to one of our party’s members by her maternal grandmother, who lives in St. John. Her maternal grandmother’s daughter, who is Charrelle’s aunt, is very much at her side in the medical facility in New York, and, of course, is the person relaying much of this information to the grandmother.

Indeed, we are so happy to hear that young Charrelle’s health is improving, and we certainly wish her the best recovery ever, and the Almighty’s continued blessings upon her.
