  1. It is the case that “Big Pharma” usually holds the patient hostage in North America and elsewhere..

Personally, I found Dr. Douglin’s presentation refreshing, informative, highly intelligent and intelligible.

God knows we need all the relevant information we can get. Well done!

    WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?

E O DOUGHLIN IS ONE OF THE BEST BRAINS THAT TRAVERSED HC AND UWI MEDICAL SCHOOL IN MY TIME

PLEASE KINDLY NOTE WHAT HE SAID ABOUT THE NEED FOR TESTING

“PLEASE KINDLY NOTE WHAT HE SAID ABOUT THE NEED FOR TESTING

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you referring to the kind of ‘contradicting’ similar to the one you pursued when it was posited that people with “compromised immune systems” are more prone to contract Covid-19 than those with relatively ‘healthy immune systems’ or those fit for purpose as Mother Nature intended?

  7. Is it necessary to be always disparaging in comments? A BU family member sent this link to the blogmaster, what does that suggest? If you think the value of a posting is based on some of the nonsense comments posted you are incorrect. Many read silently, many share to other platforms.

  8. Ditto, Dr. G.P: Back @ 1969/1970??? a number of CP and Waterford men were members of a club which typically met at John Moore’s Bar.

In addition to the convivial jug, I remember that E.D, then a student at Mona, came and lectured us on cancer. He showed then a level of mental clarity, acuity and purpose not always typical among the HC men. (Remember your own encounter(s) with Marshall; and that of a friend in the HC Sixth Form, wherein a Canon described his thinking as “wooly and confused”. The student went on to take a first in Economics and a doctorate from a decent institution. Unfortunately, in terms of academics, unlike medicine, law, engineering, no one can be sued for malpractice … LOL).

Kudos to E.D, still in the trenches. Hopefully, the authorities will integrate such wisdom in their repertoire of responses to deal with the issue(s) at hand.

Indeed David n @Pilgrim extremely informative and frankly easy to follow. What he described as complex he then explained smoothly and anyone properly following surely understood.

That he did that without referring much to notes and did NOT repeat himself as so often folks who do that are wont to do was doubly impressive.

Great post. ..so too the questions/comments. We have it now we need to act it.

  14. RE This is how the blogmaster imagines the role of the Church. Using the pulpit to address real world issues.

THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES IS THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH

THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH IS PARTICULARLY AND EXPRESSLY GIVEN IN ACTS CHAPTER TWO

WHEN I WAS A YOUNG DR I WAS OFTEN INVITED BY SDA ASSEMBLIES TO ADDRESS THEIR YOUTH ON MEDICAL MATTERS.

ONE OF THE BRETHREN ASSEMBLIES I KNOW IN BARBADOS ENGAGED IN SUCH DELIBERATIONS

ONE OF THE MOST ELOQUENT CARRIBBEAN EX-SDA TEACHERS TOLD AN ASSEMBLY THAT THE SDA ORGANIZATION IS EQUUIPPED TO SURVIVE IRREGARDLESS TO WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WORLD

    RE @Dee Word

Good observation, members of the congregation asking questions, excellent.

THAT IS NORMAL IN BAPTIST AND BRETHREN ASSEMBLIES IN BARBADOS WHERE THERE ARE MEMBERS WHO CAN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS LOL

  15. To repeat, this should be the role of the Church. To holistically educate the congregation to be better citizens. To look after their needs.

  19. I am not a theologian, but does this ignorance of the role of the church not confirm further, if that was needed, that the chairman talks about things he does not understand. In an email conversation with some friends and people of similar minds, we have been talking about the social gospel of the Church of England and racism, in particular how many Anglicans from the Caribbean came to the UK believing they would be welcomed in the CoE only to be disappointed. That conversation would be relevant to this link.
Is the role of the church to preach the Gospel? If so, what is the Gospel?

    what is the Gospel

THE GOSPEL IS DEFINED IN 1 Corinthians 15 THUS
    15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

    3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

  21. RE Why must you always be so literal in your interpretation of what people say?

I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR FURTHER LITERAL DISCUSSION ON THE BIOCHEMISTRY ON WHICH DOUGLA EXPOUNDED BY THE BU BARKERS AND BRAYERS

  22. @DAVID

Thanks for posting Dr. Doug’s piece!!! As an SDA*, most of us admire his wit, knowledge & wisdom! I felt it expedient as our families in BIM are not exempt from this nefarious disease – its implications on economies of scale; the fallout & the morbidity factors & how this could be an ominous harbinger for 380,000+ people cramped together on a 166 sq mile plot of tectonic limestone in the southern Caribbean Sea!!!

Today, global numbers are seething around 246,275 as of 14:00 GMT – with 10,038 dead & 5 reported cases so far in Barbados!!!

This is no time for complacency, SPIN* or any of the insalubrious nonsense the soothsayers & necromancers want to purport. This has to be a time for decisive & pragmatic action of the part of ALL* & sundry (most notably) those who stand at the head of the country (& they know who they are)!!!

Dithering, finger-pointing & musing about inconsequentials will not avert what could very well be an APOCALYPSE for the nation-state of Barbados!!!

The health authorities on the island need to access drugs like Hydroxychloroquine & Azithromycin & make them readily available as Italy is now doing – as China & South Korea has done!!!

David, this is the time 4 Barbados to rediscover the “SPIRIT” of “LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR” as I witnessed as a young man growing up in my Grandmother’s home in the 1960s – after being sent home from England to grow up in what was a paradise island!!!

It is time 4 ALL* Bajans to ditch the selfishness (EVERY MAN 4 HIMSELF & GOD 4 ALL ATTITUDE) and band together in the spirit of the Muskateers (ALL 4 ONE & ONE 4 ALL)…

If the 1918 – 1919 Spanish Flu Pandemic is anything to “MODEL” on – no virologist, epidemiologist or immunologist have the scientific or “PROPHETIC” insight to aptly predict what 2020 will look like ultimately!!!

Adding insult to injury, we have not even touched on the looming “FINANCIAL ARMAGEDDON” in the markets & its impact on B’dos. I shudder to think what could ensue…

It is time for the Billionaires, Multimillionaires & Millionaires on the island to secure the livelihoods of the Bajan working class by dipping into their coffers to secure wages & the food security of the masses…

We either get through this debacle “TOGETHER” or the “TITANIC” sinks into the cold, murky waters of dystopian oblivion!!!

The choice before all of us has never been more stark!!!

In the end, “TIME TO PRAY FOLKS”… #ThisIsNotAJoke

  27. MORE INFO ON: Salicylates and Pandemic Influenza Mortality, 1918–1919 Pharmacology, Pathology, and Historic Evidence

    Abstract

“The high case-fatality rate – especially among young adults – during the 1918 – 1919 influenza pandemic is incompletely understood. Although late deaths showed bacterial pneumonia, early deaths exhibited extremely “wet,” sometimes hemorrhagic lungs. The hypothesis presented herein is that aspirin contributed to the incidence and severity of viral pathology, bacterial infection, and death because physicians of the day were unaware that the regimens (8.0–31.2 g per day) produce levels associated with hyperventilation and pulmonary edema in 33% and 3% of recipients, respectively. Recently, pulmonary edema was found at autopsy in 46% of 26 salicylate-intoxicated adults. Experimentally, salicylates increase lung fluid and protein levels and impair mucociliary clearance. In 1918, the US Surgeon General, the US Navy, and the Journal of the American Medical Association recommended the use of aspirin just before the October death spike. If these recommendations were followed, and if pulmonary edema occurred in 3% of persons, a significant proportion of the deaths may be attributable to aspirin…”

  31. HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE AVAILABLE IN BARBADOS FOR THOSE WITH SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19

TEVA TO SEND US MILLIONS OF MALARIA PILLS WITH POTENTIAL TO HELP COVID-19

Hydroxychloroquine one of several drugs cited in recent days as being possibly effective against coronavirus; Israeli firm says it will provide as many as possible at no cost

Israeli generic drug giant Teva announced Friday that it will provide ten million doses of its anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which could potentially prove effective in fighting the coronavirus pandemic, to US hospitals free of charge.

The company said six million doses will be delivered to US hospitals by March 31, and more than ten million in a month.

“We are committed to helping to supply as many tablets as possible as demand for this treatment accelerates at no cost,” Teva executive vice president Brendan O’Grady said.

US President Donald Trump touted the potential use of chloroquine on Thursday after encouraging results in China and France, although many experts warn of caution.

In France, the Sanofi laboratory said it was ready Tuesday to offer millions of doses of hydroxychloroquine to potentially treat 300,000 patients.

The hydroxychloroquine molecule, also used for decades in autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, could indeed have an effect on the elimination of the virus, said Professor Didier Raoult, director of France’s Institut Hospitalo Universitaire (IHU) for the study of infectious diseases.

According to the study carried out by Prof. Raoult on 24 patients with coronavirus, six days after the start of taking hydroxychloroquine, the virus had disappeared in three-quarters of people treated.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal agency that oversees the marketing of drugs in the United States, somewhat tempered President Trump’s enthusiasm by pointing out that the treatment, authorized for certain diseases, had not been approved for coronavirus.

But it will set up “an extended clinical trial,” said Stephen Hahn, its leader.

On the strength of these medical advances, Teva also indicated that it will do everything to accelerate its production of hydroxychloroquine and also conduct research to see if in its large catalog of 3,500 drugs, others can be used to fight COVID-19.

Also this week Chinese authorities said a drug produced in Japan could be effective for treating coronavirus patients. China’s ministry of science and technology said late Tuesday that some clinical trials have been completed on favipiravir — the main ingredient in the influenza drug Avigan.

The trials using the drug as a treatment for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, showed “very good clinical results,” an official said.

A trial involving 80 cases conducted by a hospital in Shenzhen and a study of 120 cases led by Wuhan University’s Zhongnan Hospital both showed the drug shortened the recovery time for patients. Clinical tests using Avigan as a treatment for the virus have also started in Japan.

No drug is specifically approved now for treating COVID-19.

Not quietly anonymous at all. Dr. Douglin has been a he doing a health education program on VOB for at least a couple of decades. I well remember listening to him at about 6 in the evenings while I was doing my cooking. Very sensible advice offered. More fruits and vegetables, less meat and fat, more water, exercise.

I saw him at UWI, Cave Hill a few years ago and congratulated him on the program. I also noticed that he was about the same size as he was when he was a schoolboy, and that impressed me. I like a doctor who does not only talk the talk, but walks the walk.

  40. Long ago, certainly more than 30 years ago parents were asked not to treat children with viral illnesses with aspirin/baby aspirin and other NSAIDS.

Of course I like many people my age take an 81 mg aspirin for my NCD.

  41. SIMPLE SIMON

giving aspirin to children during a viral illness—most often influenza (the flu) or chickenpox—can lead to a potentially fatal condition called Reye’s syndrome– which is defined by sudden brain damage and liver function problems. It can cause seizures, coma, and death.

81 mg aspirin o.d is thought to be a prophylactic for DVT

  46. All the “one another” or ALLENON commands in the NT in one place

I have the whole list in text form below

make sure you read these in context!

“One another” is two words in English, but it’s only one word in Greek: ἀλλήλων (ah-LAY-loan). It’s used in 100 times in 94 New Testament verses. 47 of those verses give instructions to the church, and 60% of those instructions come from Paul.

These commands come from Jesus, Peter, John, Paul, and James, and they’re scattered across the New Testament. Don’t just stop at this list: dig into these passages to see what the author was talking about.

When you look at these verses, a few common themes show up.

Unity. One third of the one-another commands deal with the unity of the church.

Be at peace with one another (Mk 9:50)
Don’t grumble among one another (Jn 6:43)
Be of the same mind with one another (Ro 12:16, 15:5)
    Accept one another (Ro 15:7)
Wait for one another before beginning the Eucharist (1 Co 11:33)
Don’t bite, devour, and consume one another—seriously, guys, don’t eat each other (Ga 5:15)
Don’t boastfully challenge or envy one another (Ga 5:26).
Gently, patiently tolerate one another (Ep 4:2)
Be kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving to one another (Ep 4:32)
Bear with and forgive one another (Co 3:13)
Seek good for one another, and don’t repay evil for evil (1 Th 5:15)
Don’t complain against one another (Jas 4:11, 5:9)
Confess sins to one another (Jas 5:16)

Love. One third of them instruct Christians to love one another.

    Love one another (Jn 13:34, 15:12, 17; Ro 13:8; 1 Th 3:12, 4:9; 1 Pe 1:22; 1 Jn 3:11, 4:7, 11; 2 Jn 5)
Through love, serve one another (Ga 5:13)
Tolerate one another in love (Ep 4:2)
Greet one another with a kiss of love (1 Pe 5:14)
Be devoted to one another in love (Ro 12:10)

Humility. About 15% stress an attitude of humility and deference among believers.

Give preference to one another in honor (Ro 12:10)
Regard one another as more important than yourselves (Php 2:3)
    Serve one another (Ga 5:13)
Wash one another’s feet (Jn 13:14)
Don’t be haughty: be of the same mind (Ro 12:16)
Be subject to one another (Ep 5:21)
Clothe yourselves in humility toward one another (1 Pe 5:5)

    Here’s the rest:
    1. Do not judge one another, and don’t put a stumbling block in a brother’s way (Ro 14:13)
    2. Greet one another with a kiss (Ro 16:16; 1 Co 16:20; 2 Co 13:12)
    3. Husbands and wives: don’t deprive one another of physical intimacy (1 Co 7:5)
    4. Bear one another’s burdens (Ga 6:2)
    5. Speak truth to one another (Ep 4:25)
    6. Don’t lie to one another (Co 3:9)
    7. Comfort one another concerning the resurrection (1 Th 4:18)
    8. Encourage and build up one another (1 Th 5:11)
    9. Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (He 10:24)
    10. Pray for one another (Jas 5:16)
    11. Be hospitable to one another (1 Pe 4:9)

Of course, Jesus and the apostles give many more instructions to the church; these “one another” passages are a good start, though.

  47. @ Dr. GP

I tried Dr. Douglin’s garlic water this morning and had bad heartburn and now i am repeating it. I drank it at room temperature on an empty stomach, what did i do wrong. What should I do in future. I let it steep not for 15 minutes, but since last night. It burn the esophagus going down.

  48. I am sorry to hear that Ms P
