Many have struggled in recent days to recall a period in history when weather systems developed to Category 4 & 5 before leaving the space of the Northern Caribbean. Clearly there is enough evidence to draw a reasonable conclusion that we have entered a period in which the region will have to contend with more intense weather systems. While it seems a simple conclusion for the BU household to make others argue that it is a manufactured idea.

  3. John,
I have had a sense for many years now that the Lefty “leaders”, Environmentalists etc have a tendency to LIE profusely and very frequently to brainwash the populace into believing what suits the Left. Herr Goebbels is not dead!
People forget that many millions have been murdered by the far Left “leaders” in the last 100yrs.–Stalin, Mao for starters.

In the case of Haiti it maybe justified based on securing a reforestation program in certain key areas. Those that really care would be pushing for the homes that were supposed to be built after the Earthquake of 2010.

“What strikes me more than the rise in the graph is the cyclical nature and its disappearance.
So I thought, if trees and vegetation absorb CO2 and produce oxygen the cyclical nature of the graph pre now could be the appearance and disappearance of ice ages.
    What happens when everything freezes?
Trees and vegetation are covered by ice,
Perhaps most living organisms are wiped out.
So, looking at the graph with that thinking perhaps the periodic lows are attributable to the appearance of green matter the concentrations of which grow with time leading to a fall in the levels of CO2.
    Enter an ice age.
CO2 rises because earth’s lungs are killed.
… and the process repeats itself.
    Hence the cyclical nature.
Suppose we are killing earth’s lungs by rapid deforestation of the planet?
    The CO2 levels will rise.
But, does it mean the temperature will rise?
Perhaps what we need to try first if we want CO2 levels to fall is stop the deforestation and plant trees …. nuff of them.”

Really, really Sir John you really must discontinue with this Jekyll and Hyde disguise of pure intellectual disingenuity.

With one foot in your mouth you want to run with the scientific-minded and much maligned hares but with the other Quaker foot in a Genesis cast you want to jump on the Judeo-Christian bandwagon driven by Dr. GP and his batty sidekick Zoe whipping the poor bigoted hounds of religion in a futile pursuit to kill their quarry of knowledge and enlightenment (Illuminati).

How can you ‘objectively’ discuss such geological and climatological phenomena such as ‘ice ages’- whether major or mini- spreading across timelines in the thousands (if not millions) of years but can still be so naïvely daft as to believe in a 6,000-10,000 years existence of planet Earth peddled by batty Zoe, that biblical snake-oil salesman?

Can we conclude that you are blissfully unaware or even deliberately stupid like Zoe to have never heard about the “Pleistocene Epoch” during which the planet experienced many ‘ice ages’ with the most recent mini version ending about 11,000 to 12,000 solar years ago, giving some credence to the Noah and the Ark fable in your book of myths?

No wonder the wooly mammoth found it terminally impossible to bask in the glory of sunshine when it exited Noah’s icebox (refrigerated luxury liner)!

“A Bomb Explodes the Global Warming Myth”

This is so risible it defies description. The author has not a single clue about the mechanisms of climate change. I am saddened that people can’t see through this nonsense.

  10. MTA

Mankind did not come into the picture from day 1, neither did living creatures.

  11. Do more humans on the planet produce more CO2?

Yup, whether they had cars or not.

So we have a rising world population and a rising CO2 level.

Of ourselves we produce CO2 by breathing.

Our activities include deforestation and driving cars.

One day some bright spark may come up with a proposal to reduce world population levels!

That could reduce CO2 levels if the only aim was to reduce CO2 levels for the sake of reducing CO2 levels.

  12. Were the scientists able to get CO2 levels in the past 6000 years?

    I doubt it.

When exactly was the last ice age?

  13. John

  14. Dr Judith Curry, Climatologist, Chair School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech:

“Climate Change is a very complex issue and I am concerned that we have oversimplified both the CC problem and solutions.
We need to have a wide ranging debate about all this and those trying to stifle debate are shortchanging the science, the policy process and our democracy. We understand some basic things like we know there has been warming, we know humans have been emitting carbon dioxide, but there is widespread disagreement on how much of recent warming is caused by humans, how much climate will change in the 21st C is warming bad or not and what if anything can we do about it. All of these are topics of intense. There are very complex topics.
Climate has always changed is warming intrinsically good or bad? There is much uncertainty about what might happen and whether the impacts are good or bad is fundamentally a value judgement. Some people might benefit and some might be harmed. “

A good summation of the issue.

  18. @Money Brain, September 24, 2017 at 11:03 PM “When the results came back, his first thought was that he had to do the whole process again. “Let’s check this 10 times to make sure it’s right,” he told his colleagues. According to their analysis, Haiti’s forest cover was more than 32 percent. Wampler wondered whether they had set a sufficient minimum area for tree cover. So they used the FAO’s definition of a “forest,” which includes trees higher than 5 meters (about 16 feet) covering at least half a hectare. He ran the analysis again. The computer estimated Haiti’s forest coverage at nearly 30 percent, a number similar to the coverage in the United States, France, and Germany, and far higher than in Ireland and England

Why don’t you ask those many many Bajans who fly between Jamaica and Barbados everyday about Haiti’s lack of forest cover. The first time I went to Jamaica I had a 7 year old with me, she always takes the window seat, Nowadays I don’t take the window seat because of circulatory problems and the need to get up frequently and looking out of the plane window she said “what is the matter with down there” and I leaned down looked down and saw the brown. She had also noticed that passing over the other islands there was an umbrella of cloud cover, over Haiti, no such umbrella.

But maybe my 7 year old was lying in order to disprove Wampler.

  19. That was in October 2003.

  20. I was shocked. I had heard that Haiti was deforested, but I did not expect that a 7 year old who did not even know anything about Haiti would notice the deforestation and ask “what is wrong”

Another saying “From out of the mouth of babes and sucklings shall come forth words of wisdom.”

Judith Curry is coherent and correct. The fuss over climate change is not about its impact on the planet, just about its impact on people. The climate has always changed… the only difference now is that human activities are causing some of that change. This is not a problem for the planet… the planet does not care if we have more powerful hurricanes or rising sea levels or huge floods; these things are catastrophic for humans but the planet caries on regardless.

If you care about human suffering you care about anthropogenic climate change… if you don’t care you can afford to ignore all the warning signs

“Mankind did not come into the picture from day 1, neither did living creatures.”

Agree! They were indeed the last to ‘arrive’ on the scene and to find a perch on a shaky branch on the evolutionary tree of life.

Let’s us say on your ‘biblical’ Day Six in the measurement of cosmic time.

Clearly trees (flora) had to exist before fauna; first to remove the carbon from the atmosphere to produce oxygen, purify the water and secondly to provide food for sentient beings to appear and exist.

But let us talk more about the heavenly-dictated guardian role with which mankind has been entrusted to be the caretaker of the garden containing that tree of life.

What mankind is doing to the garden is equivalent to what Bajans are doing to the country’s drainage system designed and constructed by their forefathers to channel the tears of Mother Nature to the sea with some siphon off to sustain human life on land.

Let them continue to block its arteries with plastic and other man-made objects and they will soon see which watery god they are serving whether it be Hapi, Poseidon or Neptune carrying an unbroken trident in their hands.

Maybe Thomas Malthus was onto something that you are now promoting. BTW, he was such an excellent scholar it’s a pity he was an Anglican cleric and not of the Quaker persuasion.

  27. Simpy,
No one is disputing that there has been deforestation the question is how much is left.

How does your fine child and yourself know where Haiti begins and ends?

  28. One would think that there would be a diversity of views regarding climate change among the Trump supporters on this blog but they all seem to walk lockstep like lemmings going over a cliff……

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    What exactly is cosmic time?

If it is true that there was no time until God made it, pretty difficult to hammer down time.

Why not go and look just at the cycles in the graph and see if they are consistent with the story of creation.

    Why aren’t there more?

Forget the time scale on the horizontal axis, just look at the cycles.

I have not spent much time looking so won’t venture an opinion but if I needed proof, scientific proof, that’s where I would begin.

    … but, I don’t need proof!!

“So you accept there is a designer in all of this …. science is proving it in front of you!!”

Of course there is a designer. Actually, more than one BBE.
The Solar One that created the planets (children) and the other visiting BBEs that modified monkey man.

All you have to do is to read between the lines in the mythological pages of a legendary book.
“And God {Yahweh the Big BBE} said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

“When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them.”

The imagery of the Five-pointed star (Pentagram) is not used by King David ‘pagan’ Jews for the sport of slaying Goliath or worn by Wicca Christians for protection to ward off the wounds of evil Islam for stoning the Christian devil called Saytan.

Neither should its symbolism be lost on you.

The same way a thousand years is the cosmic equivalent to a solar day of your Lord Yahweh, so too should your understanding of cosmic time be informed bearing in mind that the words million and billion are of post Tyndale usage.

“But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.”

we could engage in a kind of You Tube/Google duel for another 200 posts (kind of like “bruise” and I know you liked bruise) but that would be pointless (at least to me). So for whatever reason, do you believe that there is a significant risk that Barbados and the other Caribbean nations could be hit by a category 5 hurricane in the near future? If so how should Barbados and by extension CARICOM “manage” that risk?

Just for the record, I believe that human activities are leading to often negative environmental consequences. Humans act as though the natural bounty of the Earth is limitless and that without care and thoughtful management we can continue indefinitely to extract the natural resources. That said, I am aware that there are “alarmists” as well as “deniers” with selfish agendas seeking to influence all of us to conform to their interests.
