I have a problem with some minibus, ZR drivers and conductors who charge tourists $2.50 as the fare.

The extra money which you get from robbing the tourists will come back to haunt you because when they find out that you have stolen from them they will:

  1. Stop taking minibuses/ZRs
  2. Get the Transport Board buses when they want to get around to see the country
  3. When they return home they will tell their people how thieving you are, and that will give Barbados a bad reputation.

The Ministry of Tourism is not spending millions of taxpayers money on advertising Barbados for you to drag it into the mud.

The minibus/ZR organizations should hold meetings and tell you how much harm you can do do to the island just by charging tourists 50 cents extra.

This nonsense with a few of you doing whatever you like has to stop.

This island is in enough trouble, without you exacerbating the situation!

    The leaders do not care about consequences. ..the people are following their careless and irresponsible leaders…ya have a careless prime minister, AG, tief for speaker of the house, corrupt DPP, none of them show good example…ya have a minster of business playing both sides against the middle….the middle being the people.

    The owners of the PSVs must accept responsibility for the state of things in the sector. A simple task of coming together under a strong vibrant association seems to be a perennial challenge. On the government side, the ineffectiveness of the Barbados Transport Authority is the other side of the issue. As usual every thing we do is poisoned with politics.

    Trying to rip-off people because they look or sound different is a ‘world-wide’ phenomena. However, when it is your bread and butter then one should exercise a great deal of caution and not put their livelihood in jeopardy.

    The blogger provided three solid reasons why they should not engage in this activity, but number 3 can stand on its own. For a 50 cents here and there. you could lose the spending of several tourists.

    (Given that many of our tourists are from the UK, this is a case of “penny wise, pounds foolish)

    From what a passenger on a ZR van told me, the $2.50 charged to the tourists,is mild compared to what she saw the conductor charged from Bridgetown to Sheraton Mall, $5.00.
    Ripping off tourists is prevalent in Barbados. I once went to a popular site on the East Coast and bought a Banks Beer, next day when I returned , with a different attendant serving, the price was up in the air, and when I questioned it , the attendant inquired as to what the other fellow had charged me the day before. It was then that I discovered there were three prices in force at this establishment for the same item. One for immediate locals, the fellows from the nearby districts,another price for obvious Bajans, and the highest of all reserved for tourists.

    There are at least three associations representing PSVs, each having a different uniform. And they seem to be unable to share a unified opinion on issues affecting them.

    I have noticed a significant increase in minibuses [B], especially on the Speightstown and Speightstown to Oistins [City-by-Pass] routes, and route taxis [ZR], mainly on saturated routes such as Silver Hill, Silver Sands, Airport, Deacons Road and Wansted. Hence, I have REASON to AGREE with to comment re: “As usual everything we do is poisoned with politics.”

    Perhaps the Transport Authority should make information available to the public relative to how many permits were issued during the past 3 years. I guess we should not hold our breaths in anticipation of a response from the TA.

    Interestingly, the Transport Board has approximately 35 Hino Mini-buses, 20 Hino Road Runners that were bought in 1997 and 15 Hino Road Rangers in 2000. Rather than being utilized to provide service on shorter routes, many of these units can be seen daily, parked at TB’s Weymouth Headquarters.

    consider this the tourist alternative of renting a car buying gas or travel by taxi to get to the same required destinations as would be by Zrs check the figures and see who are the real losers and winners
    I know the moral suasion is a factor that should be consider however given the alternatives by which the tourist can travel and the high cost for doing so the fifty cents difference which the zR charges can be summed up as a savings for the tourist
    i bet that if tourist those aware or unaware where quizzed about the fifty difference most would shrugged and say the alternatives are much higher in cost
    at times it is best not to make a mountain out of a mole hill

    The last time I went to Dominica, I was supposed to pick up a hired car at Melville Hall Airport. I waited and look around, then a mini van taxi driver, told me that probably due to the bad weather, the night before , delivery of the car was not made, and he could drop me off at the hired car place in Roseau. When I got to Roseau, I enquired from the taxi van driver , how much I owed him. Not one cent, he said, the Hired Car company will have to pay him. He could easily have charged me , and probably still collect from the hired car company. We in Barbados could learn a thing or two,from Dominica, about how to treat tourists, irrespective of their nationality.

    The management of Barbados is out of whack and every individual feels that he or she has the right to do as he/she pleases.
    Not only has Maloney stuck two fingers (Brit style) in the air at the Barbados Government and continued to build in spite of a STOP order, but I am positive that I heard on the CBC news tonight that a shipment of Chicken Wings were again imported into the island, bypassing the authorised entity which has the sole authority to do so.
    Why are we paying a Prime Minister and Ministers, and their hangars ons, big bucks and allowances, not to mention a massive pensions when the time comes, to sit on their arses like puppet dolls, while other unscrupulous persons in this society who benefit big time, pull their strings.

    This is a PERFECT example of someone ENCOURAGING and SUPPORTING DISHONESTY.

    It’s similar to, for example, school meals workers or teachers asking parents of primary school children to pay $1.50 per week for school meals, rather than the stipulated $1.00.

    When someone queries the decision, they are told “given the alternatives” of preparing or purchasing lunch for their children, “and the high cost for doing so, the fifty cents difference which (the school meals workers or teachers charge) can be summed up as a savings for the parents.”

    I am reminded of Galileo Galilei’s quote: “I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn’t learn something from him.”

    The ACs contribution on this issue is more than enough evidence to prove Galileo was wrong.

    no! it is not the same teachers cannot change the price setting for school meals which are governed by state regulatory laws .
    The ZR are privately owned enterprises and under a democracy can charged a fair price which an individual or customer have a right of choosing or refusing
    in the case of the tourist they can either do which best pleases themselves along with having several options of transportation to choose from
    the bottom line in most cases for the consumer always comes down to which best favors the pocket book
    so don/t come trying to pull the school meals option card when all knows that regulatory boards/laws have made a settled price which cannot be and should not be used as a bargaining point against a parent or the child

    Did not know ZR’s and minibuses overcharged tourists no surprise given the unruly vicious practices of the ZR culture. Never in the history of this island has one group selfishly flouted the law and got away with so much illegal behavior to the detriment of the majority of law abiding citizens.

    A south bound ZR van stopped by the bus pole at Southern Plaza on Friday in the middle of the road blocking traffic going north and south. The nasty looking conductor disembarked pants dropping under his ass in dirty slippers and armhole vest shouting to the carpark and supermarket for potential passengers. No one came it made little difference the ZR wasn’t moving until it got some passengers from Southern Plaza.

    In the meantime docile drivers sat in their cars in a traffic jam stretching on both sides not even blowing a horn. It was an incredible sight. When one driver was brave enough to express disgust with a horn blow the ZR driver and conductor washed him in cuss. Finally when the dirty looking conductor and driver felt no new fares were coming they slowly pulled off.

    The traffic lines by then were long and moving at snail’s pace. Not a policeman or police car passed. Just another day on the streets under the dictatorship of the ZR culture the worst thing ever to happen in our island.

    does anyone knows how much it cost to maintain a ZR and how much losses is accumulated in the slow season . Could it be the cost is not sufficiently regulated to make up for the loss revenue
    If that being the case then the Zr owner or management might be aware of the additional; charges and should be held responsible and the Zr driver should not be accused of being a thief . Point being that barbadians have this loose cannon mentality of broad painting when in fact the truthfulness of the story is not always told

    Too much vivid detail for you not to have been there .

    You are complicit in this crime, you and all the other drivers, do you know why?

    All of you could have recorded that incident with video and pictures and emailed it here to the Honourable Blogmaster and the driver, the nasty conductor, the number of the ZR and its owner would be broadcasted to the world.

    Mr Davis, You have only touched on a small part of the problem.

    This multi-tiered system of charging for services is in place for tourists and expatriates. Fortunately for the tourist, he/she may just be on vacation, but an expatriate trying to do business in the island must resist aggressive attempts to separate them from their money.

    I have a friend who was making inquiries about a home on the island and the seller began negotiations at a price that was $20K higher that in the newspaper. He hung up the phone.

    The rot exists not only at the ZR level but in other segments of the society. It may be convenient to comment on the ZR drivers, but a larger problem needs to be addressed.

    I am surprise at your position.
    What if a Bajan decide to visit his homeland and play tourist? Should he be charged more than a next Bajan? And how do you determine who is a tourist? Dress?Color of their skin? Where they get on or off the bus? Accent (some bajans have an American accent and have not left the island :-))? The two-tiered system has many obvious flaws.

    Don’t just oppose because you have access to a keyboard.

    I was a child bicyclist I rode my bike, at nights without lights,on the wrong side of the road and broke every rule of the Road Traffic Act. Not a fellow opened his mout to put me right.
    As I grew up I acquired a motor cycle, by whatever means, I drove my noisy scrambler at nights without lights, without a helmet or number plates, or insurance, or a driving license. I broke every rule of the Road Traffic Act. Not a fellow opened his mout to set me right.
    Now I am a ZR driver /Conductor, I am breaking every rule in the Road Traffic Act. Those in authority pay us very little attention.
    Next I got hold of a Glock 9 mm , and walk into the Bridgetown court yard, and all of a sudden everybody is on my case ,telling me that I have broken the Rules and Regulations of this fair land.

    Where did I say I am in favour to over charging .I questioned the why and what is factored into the many challenges the drivers faces daily.unlike the article premise of calling the zr drivers thieves which in my opinion cast selfish assertions and passes scurrilous judgements
    Here we have a class of service privately owned workers who have to squeeze out a living in an highly competitive environment without having to rely on govt handouts or concessions now snarly confronted by so-called judges and jurist of a moral persuasion who have the tenacity of leaning forward in their seat to pass judgement on the driver’s and calling them thieves
    Now because I try to explore the issue from an angle of plight I am now being castigated and regulated in the minds of some as being dishonest.

    In May 2014 the operators of private PSVs suggested government should raise bus fares because of rising operating expenses. However, in response, Michael Lashley said government was NOT considering an INCREASE in bus fares. [Nation News, May 1, 2014].

    Also, recall that at a meeting held on Monday, September 21, 2015, Chris Sinckler and Michael Lashley REJECTED a REQUEST made by over 100 owners and operators of PSVs in attendance, to INCREASE bus fares. [Barbados Today, September 23, 2015].

    Therefore, it is clear that bus fares are also GOVERNED by state regulatory LAWS and ZR or mini bus operators CANNOT make an ARBITRARY decision to charge WHATEVER fare they want.

    Since you are the DLP’s official representative on BU, perhaps you should ADDRESS your QUESTION re: “does anyone knows how much it cost to maintain a ZR and how much losses is (are) accumulated in the slow season. Could it be the cost is not sufficiently regulated to make up for the loss revenue?” to Sinckler and Lashley.

    Interesting comments.

    However, you have a “hypocritical ability” of criticizing an issue, but subsequently taking a different position when that issue is praised by the DLP.

    Now you are AWARE that as recent as September 2015, both Michael Lashley and Chris Sinckler REJECTED a REQUEST made by PSV operators to INCREASE BUS FARES, do you still MAINTAIN your POSITION on the issue, as outlined by both of your above comments?

    If you honestly believe in and are ready to defend your above comments, when you attend the next DLP constituency branch meeting, please exhibit some honesty by telling Lashley and Sinckler what you believe and defend your comments with equal vigor, and more so, as you have defended them on BU.

    The premises of my comment is solely based on the economics of sustaining a fair and equitable profit margin for the business to performan and be maintain properly .Really do not understand the necessity outside of setting a standard guidline which is fair and practible by which the business can follow but cannot go over and above the area of price next gouging
    However what is amazing is the writer and bloggers goes on a tangent.as labelling the drivers as thieves instead of using a plausible and clean approach of looking at how econmics might be a cause for the driver having to use a backdoor entry of illegality to keep the business afloat
    Btw speckled fowl there was a time when it was legal to sell a race of people and make them work for free i think civilzation in a democracy demands better that all people be treated with dignity fairness and equality
    So when u get here talking about law go check yuh history

    It’s truly amazing how you selectively choose certain aspects of a contribution, interpret it to suit your particular agenda and subsequently respond accordingly. It demonstrates that your ability to read and comprehend is limited or confined to your specific bias.

    You raised the issue of PSV operators essentially having to do what is necessary to remain profitable in a competitive environment, even if it means ignoring the laws of Barbados to make an ARBITRARY decision to charge WHATEVER bus fare they deem “conveniently suitable” at any given time.

    Since 2010, the PSV operators having been asking government to increase bus fares or grant them duty free concessions so as to offset the increasing cost of operations.
    As recent as September 2015, both Lashley and Sinckler REJECTED a REQUEST made by Association of Public Transport Operators (APTO) and other representatives, to grant the sector an INCREASE in BUS FARES and DUTY FREE CONCESSIONS.

    Hence, we can reasonably assume Sinckler and Lashley DO NOT SHARE your perspective on this issue. Rather than CONVENIENTLY neglecting to address government’s response to the sectors’ requests (taking your reasoning into consideration), you DELIBERATELY focused your attention on contributors, as you wrote, “calling PSV operators thieves.”

    You stated “the premise of (your) comment is solely based on the economics of sustaining a fair and equitable profit margin for the business to perform and be maintained properly,” is the basis for your argument in support of overcharging.

    Therefore, applying similar logic, surely you must be equally supportive of operators undertaking other illegal activities such as going off route, overloading, speeding or “dragging,” to “sustain a fair and equitable profit margin for the business to perform and be maintained properly.”

    However, I find it necessary to remind of your comments in response to a BU article entitled “Indiscipline on the Roads,” which was submitted by Anthony Davis on June 12, 2015:

    Arthur lashed out at Mottley over her stance on the amendment after she took the opportunity to shred Government over the treatment of former workers of state agencies, including severed employees of the National Conservation Commission (NCC) who the Employment Rights Tribunal ruled last week had been unfairly dismissed in April 2014 as part of the administration’s retrenchment exercise.
    However, Arthur took offence to Mottley’s position, suggesting that it was naïve, simplistic and superficial and had no bearing on the measure before Parliament.
    The former Prime Minister said that extending the retirement age to 67 was one of the important accomplishments of his administration, and he stressed that BLP legislators who were members of his Cabinet at the time should not now oppose decisions to which they had previously agreed.
    “Judging the amendment on its merit we cannot seek to intrude on that discussion, matters that we may think would give us some political support or be politically interesting but has no bearing on the matter that is before Parliament of the land,” Arthur said in an obvious jab at Mottley.
    “This is a simple amendment to make sure that two posts recognized by the Constitution as being worthy to be in the Constitution. It is on those compelling grounds that I have to support the amendment to the Constitution. That is all that is being required to allow those two posts to benefit from the increase in the age of retirement,” the former Prime Minister stressed.

    To show you what Artaxerxes has gone to pains to explain to you regarding your paucity of thought is borne out by the clear confirmation that ” you are an ignoramus pretending to be a “political strategist.”

    It lies in one word/phrase you submitted

    The word was “shred”. The phrase was “…after she took the opportunity to shred Government over the treatment of former workers…”

    Inherent in the word “shred” is the concept of successfully tearing apart something. The word dufus, which you “an ignoramus pretending to be a political strategist” CANNOT understand should have been “attack” or some other verb which did not convey “successful” action.

    I feel fuh you, hear… you like you got Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), yuh. This is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions about Mia Mottley) and REPETITIVE, RITUALIZED BEHAVIORS (compulsions), they feel compelled to perform (no matter the topic, you have this repetitive urge to focus on Mottley).

    Since Dr. Denis Lowe professes to be a licensed Clinical Psychologist, perhaps you should APPEAL to him for HELP.

    You introduced a silly argument to condone and support the overcharging of bus fares. The minister of finance and the minister of labour essentially dismissed that nonsense when they rejected a suggestion made by PSV operators to grant them duty free concessions and an increase in bus fares.

    I will temporarily ignore the topic and engage you in a “tit for tat”……………. my apologies to the blog-master.

    You have constantly implied that, Mottley not being in possession of a LEC has been illegally practicing law in Barbados, to the point of exhaustion.

    However, I’m sure Michael Carrington PROUDLY DISPLAYS his LEC, yet was confronted with a law suit for ILLEGALLY with-holding his client Mr. Griffiths’ property for 14 years and BLATANTLY refusing to RESPOND to any requests for settlement issued by the senior citizen. The court ruled in favour of Griffiths thereby indicating Carrington is basically a thief.

    Freundel Stuart, another lawyer who can also brag about being in possession of a LEC, CATEGORICALLY DENIED signing off on CAHILL, but subsequently admitted he signed the deal after EVIDENTIAL PROOF was DISPLAYED on BU. Surely you must agree that by his actions, Freundel is proven to be a liar.

    Recall Denis Lowe PROUDLY DISPLAYED a theology PhD in parliament, which he claimed to have received from “God’s Bible School and College,” (but a search on the internet shows nowhere that GBS offers a doctoral program). However, (that aside), Lowe being a “man of the cloth,” stood in charge of an UNGODLY and IMMORAL NCC retrenchment process, which ignored the mandated “first in, last out” policy and saw workers recently employed individuals from his constituency REMAINING employed.

    All the talk about GOD, Denis has proven time and time again he is a dishonest individual and should be aware that attending God’s Bible School” does not negate his sins, give him diplomatic immunity and a passport to heaven.

    The CLICO forensic audit report provided evidence to prove that David Thompson, (another lawyer who attended Hugh Wooding for his LEC) had his hands deep in the $3.333M scam with Leroy Parris.

    These DISHONEST activities RESONATE in the MINDS of the electorate, not some silly debate about increasing retirement age.

    A key area we need to improve as a society is the ability of the people the politicians serve to hold them accountable. It is for some time we have known about the reckless management and borrowing from the NIS Fund (by successie governments) to support same reckless behaviour by politicians but have we heard from minister Michael Lashley how they plan to repay the people’s money? Yet we can pay all exorbitant monies to lawyers to review boilerplate agreements, travel the world first-class and stay in 4/5 star hotels etc.

    Recall, for example, the vendors’ stalls that were built adjacent the temporary Golden Square Market on Probyn Street. The Ministry of Agriculture DID NOT do ANYTHING to SECURE “property of the crown,” and as a result of their NEGLIGENCE, ALL of those stalls have been DISMANTLED and the MATERIALS STOLEN.

    Those stalls could have been temporarily assigned to the vendors selling on the environs of the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal, who were recently removed by the police, until a permanent location could be found for them to operate.

    That venture was a WASTE of taxes and the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. David Estwick, should be held ACCOUNTABLE for this travesty.

    And to “add insult to injury,” the yard-fowl supporters will ALWAYS try to DEFEND the INDEFENSIBLE.
