Has Naked Departure Crossed the Line?

BU and many Barbadians are familiar with the website called Naked Departure run by Veronica S. Cutting. Our question: has Naked Departure crossed the line?

There is no doubt Cutting’s website has caused Barbadians to pay attention, mainly because of a high salacious content. The BU household has been quietly observing the rise of Naked Departure and we have resisted, until now, publicly commenting on the website. There is the popular saying to whom much is given much is expected. Given the explosion of the social media it has provided ordinary citizens with the platform to promulgate opinions that can be read by untold numbers across the globe in just seconds. BU do what we do because we love Barbados and although we will get our keyboards dirty from time to time, we try our level best to minimize collateral damage to the innocent. For example, when we have to call names we are usually sure we have gotten it right. In the odd case we have gotten it wrong we were quick to retrieve the situation and extend an apology. This approach has worked well for us for the last 9 years and is reflected in the quality of participation on the blog.

Although some stories posted on Naked Departure are true we are aware that many are not. The policy of Naked Departure appears to be one of posting all messages and videos received and deal with the fallout when it comes.  The BU household believes Sherri and Naked Departure have a lot in common. One common factor is that from behind our dashboards we see and smell the stench that exist away from the nostrils of an unsuspecting public. And it makes us so damn angry that we are driven to want to do something to make a difference. Perhaps where our philosophy and approach differ  is that the BU household understands social media tools must not be used to intentionally harm the innocent.

To answer the question posed above: has Ms Sherri Cutting gone too far? We respectfully say that she has.

Let us constructively review a few recent postings on Naked Departure to build a case.

“Kaneisha Taylor’s Mother, Kerryann, is a Whore” – photo of a child under the age of 18, which, without the consent of both parents, is illegal in most countries.

“ADRIEL BRATHWAITE, a Banker is turning Windmill Hot Sauce into Cocaine in Canada, USA, UK”. If someone is manufacturing cocaine out of hot sauce in Canada and the USA, it is outside of Adriel’s jurisdiction. Instead of tipping off the people who are alleged to be are carrying out this criminal enterprise, Sherri ought to have reported her concerns to the relevant law enforcement authorities in the USA and Canada.

“Carl Moore of Nation News Barbados vs. The Naked Truth”. Sherri and Naked Departure describes the Nation News as, “the bordello of a cesspool”. Sherri shares what constitutes truth in defamation, “The TRUTH CANNOT BE DISPROVED!” Surely what must be considered is that the truth needs to be proved first.

“The Abed’s Made Their Money from Slavery”. Sherri alleges that they employed university students at below minimum wage to work on their various projects. There is no supporting documentation for the allegation that Abed paid below minimum wages and surely the concept of no concept of  “slavery” does not apply in this case.

It is not the motive of BU to be malicious in our critique of Naked Departure. However, we believe Sherri and crew should appreciate that our feedback is heartfelt.  Respect and integrity must be earned based on actions and behaviours displayed over time.  Blindly damaging the reputations of innocent people is not fair. There is still the opportunity for Naked Departure, Barbados Underground and other social media sites to highlight and report injustices and provide a voice for those who otherwise would have none.

To whom much is given much is expected.

    What the problem with her is while she cast stones at everyone she fails to mention she was sleeping with her daughters boyfriend. That she dated him less than a year, Mental illness to be exact “Bipolar: disease is hereditary in the :Cutting family:
    She is not out to help people as she claims. She does more harm than good.
    Often when anyone “dares” to challenge her about her stories which many are outright lies.
    Anyone who has lived has made mistakes and who is she to judge ? She claims her site is a instrumental site to which women and children can voice their grievances . She claims to be helping women and children monetarily when I feel she is fleecing a whole nation . She is 58 or 59 from the search Gabriel Abed did on her. Can anyone tell me why she has no job and so much free time on her hands to be a CYBERBULLY. Do not tell me she is a Champion for underdogs she is the epitome of a narcissistic sociopath. Latest was a blog created by herself speaking about herself that she should be a story for “Huffington Post. Yes the extremities of a Cyber bully. What happens when someone with severe biolar mental illness refuses to take medication and since she is post menopause and nearly 60 she is all the worse.

    Maybe she has no job because she is on welfare benefits, or disability allowance or something so.

    I hope that she is an American citizen and is keeping her nose clean with the American authorities. because if i was her I would not like to be deported to Barbados.

    Mental ILLNESS is an illness. If she was suffering with Crohn’s disease or cancer, would you be making a joke of it? That is neither a justification nor an excuse for her irreverent behaviour. Maybe she doesn’t need a job?

    BU cannot be positioned as a voice of reason and ignore the bully in the room. It is important to state a position for the record. BU has no intension of getting into a shouting match with those people.One reason BU has grown over the years is that we took encouraged feedback from the family and made adjustments along the way. We offered feedback to Cutting and she responded by propagating lies. Here is a final comment on this matter.

    BU will not ban anyone unless in our judgement there is no choice to safeguard the quality of BU. True to our promise we have taken all blogs tagged Violet Beckles offline.

    To Deeds aka Violet Beckles, Well Well and Consequences and Look, three monikers behind Naked Departure, the BU family restates our disappointment on how you have handled this matter. Feel free to post but BU will not engage you unless we see some effort to demonstrate honesty and integrity in your treatment of the issues.

    David, re. your 2:02 am post and preceding related posts

    Seems to me that you threw the first stone.

    The reaction from ND must have been expected but your counteraction was a bit strange to me i.e. why remove all blogs tagged Violet Beckles offline if you believed in the truth of the thrust of those blogs? Why remove all of them now for what appeared to be a totally unrelated matter? It didn’t compute.

    However, it now appears that you have proof that the “household” that authored the various Violet Beckles posts are also principals of ND and that proof also appears to suggest some involvement with CUP.

    This incident is also of great interest insofar as it highlights certain aspects of the mindset and political strategies of some very frequent posters here as well as the differences in literary styles of the VB-ND family.

    Thanks David! It is always good to understand why certain things are said and positions taken.

    Hey David….you are shooting in the dark, I dont even know Sheri and though I read some of what’s posted on Naked Departure, others I bypass for obvious reasons, I dont care to know the business of people I dont know, you will never see me targeted by her because I fly way beneath her radar.

    In saying that, I am glad she is exposing the likes of Peter Harris, Gabriel Abed and those who find it necessary to commit crimes on the island while enriching themselves off the backs of black people, the politicians who are corrupt, the criminals, pedophiles and lowlifes on the island, her doing so has finalky resulted in this….

    Being in North America does not mean I automatically know her…and besides, it took months before I even knew of her website…and would much prefer her going after the corrupt public officials anyway, in addition, I would not want her coming after me, despite me being a force to be reconned with, so David, do as I do, I comment on some of her posts depending on what’s posted, but I stay well away, let her carry on smartly.

    If Sherri Veronica continues to go after the corrupt business people, corrupt DBLP politicians and other corrupt public officials including the DDP, we may see some more of the above calls from Marilyn Rice-Bowen and others who are genuinely interested in the country’s welfare and the disregard for the wellbeing of children and each other’s lives and wellbeing will finally be addressed. We know who the culprits are, the more exposure they get, the better, something will give.

    I have deep respect for David & BU.We do not always agree on almost all issues.Over the years I have made some quite dramatic and startling comments on many issues that I considered to be of critical and immense importance to me as well as other Barbadians and Barbados as a whole.I am grateful for BU for that opportunity.
    However,David I am getting the feeling some degree of jealousy might be the reason for the unnecessary and I consider UN-called conflict with Naked Departure.
    Some of the personal stupid stories about who sleeping with who,who horning who and who has incurable diseases and such like Naked Departure could do with out those nonsensical stories.I believe the site should continue to highlight the injustices being meted out to hapless,inconsequential individuals and families in Barbados by the scum bags and miscreants that are considered untouchables in this morally corrupt country we called home.
    I get extremely angry and hurt when I read about the things that were done by that scum bag Peter Harris and the indiscretions carried out by individuals in authorities to the young vulnerable children of Barbados.
    David,I honestly believe Naked Departure has a place on the local blogs and I hope it continues to highlight the wickedness that is done in Barbados by the high and mighty.

    @David February 24 2:02 AM….and I applaud your actions loudly. We are at one. My point was that you are above shouting our fighting in the gutter with her.

    I am sure you recognize that Veronica Cutting and Naked Departure is a symptom of the people’s anger, arguably a poorly directed anger in her case.

    She and her site are also exactly a function of the rot in society… the one that panders to the lowest common denominator and reflects a pervasive seemingly well entrenched disregard for morals or rule of law: like the PM I spoke of, or like the speaker Carrington conducting himself as he did. Like the current PM allowing that behaviour and as surely like the parent condoning her child’s disrespect and basic indiscipline at Springer.

    When I was a boy the mention of Nelson Street and its environs conjured a sense of a dark-side of society because I was told then that was where illicit activities of a certain type were conducted.

    Today, those illicit activities have grown exponentially and Nelson Street is on Naked Departure, but it also long ago took root in the Heights and Gardens and in the House of Assembly. Took root in the Courts, among our legal brains, at the DPP and in our Police Force.

    So David, as a voice of reason I hope you have many, many more years highlighting the “wrongs that needs resistance ” because there is a lot to resist. Naked Departure is the LEAST among them.

    No one is making light of her mental illness her mental illness. But clearly she is a abusing people left, right and centre. With no end in sight. People make mistakes in judgement she herself did when she slept with her daughters boyfriend. Her dreams were crushed. People get hurt in life and sadly she can not get past hers but to target others if it be by lies mixed with truth. What will it take a person to commit suicide from one of her most malicious stories . Showing a video of a young girl have sex with a boyfriend , Saying pedophile’s destroy lives. I believe she “herself” was sexually abused as a child. Then top that off she has been given a disease of mental illness. How does she not know the girl in the video with the soldier was not abused as a child. Many women become promiscuous from early offset sexual abuse. Those girls that died in a fire she crucified them . A policeman hanged himself and she put up a fake video claiming to be him. Will the bloodthirsty sharks not be happy until she causes someone to take their life? She is a mother herself she has no empathy for others . She is a very insensitive , cruel and vile human being who was probably never nurtured in her formative years. She is ‘unhappy :” so others should be as well. Her apathetic ways are appalling. What she is doing is immoral and amoral. She cares about victims of abuse ? Really!!!! She said Bobby Mckay was abused and when will she address this . Had the Angela Cole who has been brought on charges for defamation in on all this. Angela should be arrested and charged and convicted . I hope Sheri is extradited back here . That someone files on her in the USA and holds her accountable. She will never stop unless “legal action is taken” She calls all Bajans demons, whores, rapists , pedophiles . Yet some of us Bajans bask in her attacks on a whole nation. While she even seeks to make money from the country she attacks her own birth place. Going on how the mighty Roman Empire the USA is so great. Charlie Sheen , Magic johnson and a host of people have aids, STDS there are STD clinics there. There is child abuse murders and pedophiles .There is corruption in the USA some politicians get caught and others not. She is also a woman who lost a child she is very bitter and it shows . She needs to see a therapist and get counseling. Keep feeding her illness and then share the story when a suicide happens from her cyber abuse and bullying then get all excited . Do we bask in the demise of others. Her site helps how?!!!

    I lost respect when she attacked the car crash victims with such lack of compassion and fury. She herself is a mother and mothers lost their children in that crash she had no mercy in her crusade and reign of terror. She is a Cyber bully she must laugh at the tears of others and their pain and torment . Defend her friend one day story next naive are those who defend and support her.

    Tenelle…if Sherri is being dishonest, how is she different from Gabriel Abed with the bitcoin scam in Barbados, Leroy Parris and David Thompson-CLICO scam, Peter Harris with the CGI scam and the lawyers, politicians and public officials who enable him……Michael Carrington bullshitting a client for years and refusing to pay the client his money…..do you take offense to what has beenhappening to people on the island or is your agenda solely to get rid of someone who now has international eyes on the nastiness that the island hss become thanks to the above players.

    Do you even care about the people on the island who are genuinely victimized and if you do, what have you ever done about it….at least both David and Sherri are airing their concerns, what have you done.

    Can she give examples of monetary ways and publish the women , children she has helped ?!!NAKED DEPARTURE is a site which encourages women and children to speak out about all types of abuses. Victims of abuse can freely blog here. Keeping such unimaginable acts secret almost always lead to dysfunctional lives and everyone deserves a fair chance to live a well-adjusted life. Our goal, ultimately, is to provide monetary support and education for victims. Furthermore, freedom of information, freedom of speech and request for (hidden) information dealing with land fraud issues will also be subjects of our blogs. Sheri Veronica, Blogger and Proxy

    @Tenelle your point is heard loudly and clearly. But you seem to perceive that you can do something about Ms Cutting which law enforcement or hosting sites have been unable to. You have given another side to her ‘reasons for being’ and shamed her as she has others…good for you.

    But what do you hope to prevent? That suicide you speak of repeatedly. Really!

    Many things force people to act in that way and surely social media public humiliation has been blamed before, But do you really feel that will stop her or anyone like her from pursuing their wrong-headed goals…it will not.

    The bombastic nature of Cutting’s attacks on her critics is as old a strategy as there is in life..isn’t one politician riding that very same behaviour on a horse called Republican Popularity and hoping to use it as his whip to push the horse over the line of victory at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave ?

    Enough of Naked Departure.

    Cleaning up the dirty Bajan landscape requires the spirited attention NOT her or her site.

    If there is one good thing Naked Departure has done is to expose the fallacy that Barbados is one of the least corrupt countries in the Caribbean. I always wonder where Transparency International received their information when assessing countries in the Caribbean.Barbados is highly corrupt.
    Naked Departure has also shattered the integrity and admiration and respect some Barbadians have of so-called prominent people in Barbados.People such as the scum bag Peter Harris.
    It has also re-enforced my view that where ever and and what ever the rat -catcher Indians get involved in there is always corruption and evil.Check what is happening in the Caribbean Cricket League with an alleged money launderer and tax evader purchasing the Barbados Trident.

    Tenelle still dont get…if the DPP on the island cant or wont do anything about murdered children, corrupt insurance executives, corrupt politicians and business people and that is within his jurisdiction, how can he be expected to do anything about Sherri Veronica who is outside his jurisdiction, despite him getting pressure from all the corrupt people on the island to do so, their sense of self-importance has gone to their heads and they believe it extends internationally. …they better wake up and try to correct the ills on the island first.

    Tenelle….are you sure you are not also stricken with a mental problem, as you are accusing others. Ronald Jones, minister of education called the high energy, hormone fueled children on the island demons, he threatened to “crack heads and shoot” the same electorate whose votes he needs to return him to parliament so he can continue to steal his salary by not doing his job….did you ever question Jones’ stupidity and stark ignorance, were you not shock that a minister of government would be so cavalier about cracking heads and shooting people, do you know what he calls the taxpayers, who pay his salary, in public and private….do you know what the Abeds, Peter Harris, Cow & Bizzy Williams, Bjerkham, Tempro and all the other scum who got wealthy off the backs of the people, call them all in private and also in public….does that not bother you and if not, why not, why not protest that also. Ya priorities are as screwed up as ya brains.

    Negroman…Transparency International gets it’s information by asking the same corrupt people or those who have never done business or lived on the island….they too are getting an eye opener for publishing false information that causes unaware investors to go to the island and then have to run, when they are extorted or see the corruption.

    It appears Sherri has all the relevant qualifications to sit the Chair of the highest court of the land. Yes indeed, a court of liars, deceivers, gossipmongers, crooks, legalized thieves and frauds, promiscuous womanizers and manizers, homosexuals, backstabbers and gunslingers.

    Yes indeed, a perfect representation of the colourful spectrum of the rainbow of the Bajan society as captured through the lens of Sherri. A modern day Sodom & Gomorrah in much need of exposure.

    When some people have the courage to fight her on US Soil and stop complaining and go to the FBI and go get her on US soil where the coward hides. When people band together and use their resources google, facecbook, twitter , Blog radio will remove her via court orders,. She needs to be fought in the US the orders must come from US Judges, the FBI can find her . Gabriel Abed did anyone can.     Intentional, not Unintended, Results

    For most crimes, the prosecutor need only show that the defendant did an act that the law has made illegal. The defendant need not have intended the consequences that result. The person may intend to annoy or intimidate the victim, or the words may be designed to provoke a fight.

    Actions that unintentionally cause distress are not considered harassment. For instance, someone who plays loud music and mistakenly thinks that the sound won’t carry has probably not harassed his next-door neighbor.

    STALKING AS HARASSMENT

    Harassment can be committed through verbal or non-verbal means. A person may use physical gestures to threaten or annoy a victim, or a person may intimidate a victim through a pattern of behavior, such as showing up at the victim’s home or workplace. In some states, harassment that involves monitoring or following the victim is known as stalking.
    Cyberbullying or Cyberstalking as Harassment

    In addition to in-person communication, harassment also occurs where a person uses an electronic device such as a phone or computer to communicate threats, sometimes anonymously. The prevalence of the internet in everyday life has made harassment via email and social networking sites commonplace. Referred to as cyberbullying or cyberstalking, states have responded in differing ways to the growing problem. Some state legislatures have created separate statutes specifically addressing harassment that occurs online. Virginia, for example, directly addresses harassment that occurs on the internet, making it illegal to communicate via a computer network obscene language, threats of illegal or immoral acts, and obscene suggestions.

    HELP FOR VICTIMS

    Cyberbullying can have devastating effects on victims. If you are or someone you care about is a victim, seek help. Websites like stopbullying.gov and STOMP Out Bullying provide information and resources, including ways to get immediate help. You might also want to look elsewhere for location-specific information on bullying or cyberbullying; for example, you can try including the name of your state, county, city, or community in an online search.
    Hate Crimes and Special Victims as Harassment

    Harassment laws also exist to protect specific classes of persons, such as persons holding public office. Hate crime laws typically prohibit harassment that targets victims based on their age, gender, sexual orientation, or race.     One Act or Many?

    For certain types of activity, many states require repeated acts or a pattern of behavior in order for a defendant to be found guilty of harassment. But where the activity involves physical contact, the threat of violence, or conduct likely to provoke a violent reaction, harassment statutes typically require only a single incident. For example, Hawaii’s harassment statute requires repeated phone calls in order for a violation of the law to have occurred, but the same statute requires only a single occurrence if the language or action is likely to cause a violent response or cause the victim to reasonably believe that the aggressor intends to physically harm the victim.

    In some states, it is not necessary that a person threatens immediate harm. In Washington state, for example, a person commits harassment even where the threat is to commit a physically violent act at a future time. Other states require an immediate threat, such as California’s criminal threat statute.

    Penalties

    States recognize both misdemeanor and felony forms of harassment. Many states punish first-time harassment offenses as misdemeanors, but punish subsequent harassment convictions as felonies. In North Carolina, a defendant’s first conviction for stalking is punished as a misdemeanor, but subsequent stalking convictions are punished as felonies.

    Some states also identify specific types of harassment as deserving harsher punishment. California punishes as misdemeanors harassing threats that are intended to make a victim fear for his or her safety, but threats to commit a crime that will result in death or severe physical harm are classified as felonies.

    In addition to jail time and fines, penalties for harassment can include court-ordered psychological counseling. Sentences also frequently forbid a defendant from having direct or indirect contact with the victim. Violating a no-contact provision can result in new charges, in addition to revoking the probation or parole of a convicted harasser.

    State legislatures have also passed laws that require schools to implement anti-bullying policies. A student who harasses another student, either in school or online, may face non-criminal penalties such as suspension or a ban from participating in school sports and activities.

    Restraining Orders and Civil Liability

    In addition to criminal charges, harassment can result in civil actions brought by the victim. A person who feels victimized by harassing behavior may seek a civil restraining order to prevent further harassment. Restraining orders frequently require that the respondent (that is, the person accused of harassment) not have any contact, direct or indirect, with the person seeking protection. The orders also typically require that the respondent keep a minimum physical distance from the respondent at all times.

    While restraining orders are often handled in court as a civil matter, violations of a civil restraining order can trigger criminal charges, including felony charges.

    Harassment can also result in civil lawsuits for damages. An employee who feels harassed by a co-worker may sue both the alleged harasser and their employer, regardless of whether the harassing conduct rises to the level of a crime.

    Defenses to Harassment Charges

    Defendants sometimes raise the following defenses when facing trial on harassment charges.

    Free speech

    First Amendment free speech principles may come to the aid in some cases. Although both the federal and state constitutions protect the freedom of speech, the freedom is not absolute. Whether a particular communication constitutes free speech, or crosses the line into criminal conduct, often turns on whether the communication is deemed to be for a legitimate purpose.

    For example, Alabama’s harassment law states that the statute does not apply to telephone communications conducted for legitimate business purposes. Under such statutes, a collection agency employee that makes multiple calls in an effort to collect a valid debt is protected from criminal harassment charges, while an agent who threatens to harm the debtor’s family faces possible criminal harassment charges because the agent’s threats are not deemed legitimate business practices.

    Unintended Consequences

    A defendant may also argue that the alleged harassment was an unintended consequence of the defendant’s actions. For example, a person at home might play music that contains offensive lyrics, unaware that his child left a window open; a passerby on a seldom-used path hears the offensive music. Although the passerby feels annoyed, the person playing the music did not commit the crime of harassment because the person did not play the music with the intent to harass the passerby.

    Just bluffing?

    Defendants may think that they can defend themselves by arguing that their threats were hollow and that they did not intend to carry them out. It is generally not a defense that the defendant did not actually intend to follow through with a threat.

    Getting a court order stating that comments are indeed defamatory shouldn’t be too difficult if that really is the case. The hardest part might be enforcing the court order, particularly if the website is hosted in a another country.

    Fortunately you can submit your court order directly to Google and they will consider disabling access to the defamation.

    3) Send a Legal Request to Google

    Whilst Google has immunity from prosecution under the Communications Act Section 230C, they will consider legal requests to take down illegal material from the search results.

    You need to state clearly which specific laws have been broken and provide evidence to that effect.

    Of course Leroy Parris belongs in jail but does not mean she is not a bully. You miss the point this site is more a gossip malicious site she claimed her under the age of Ten yr old niece had disgusting sexual acts as a minor and her nephew great nephew was addicted to porn all because the immature stunted emotional developed MS Cutting was called out by her own family as being a BULLY and vile and dissociated with the likes of her. They also said she is bipolar not to hurt her to ask she seek help she went on a rage like a rabid dog she is pretty disgusting as a human and thank goodness she is one of the few and far that are sociopaths stats are one in five and she is that :one: in five.
