Barbados is an Attractive Product
The double positive whammy for our tourism sector last week was the number of English cricket supporters who came for the Kensington staging of the cricket test match and the announcement by JetBlue that it was introducing a weekly seasonal flight on Saturdays non-stop from Boston.
From the first flight which began on 7th November it could easily add about 4,000 American arrival numbers until the service halts on 30th April next year. It also gives us another incredible gateway from a market that many know could witness significant increases over the next few years. While the 48 square miles that make up the actual city of Boston boasts a population of about 646,000 inhabitants, within the area known as Greater Boston some 4.5 million people reside making it the country’s tenth largest metropolitan density.
At first concern may be expressed about a single flight per week but you should remember the Americans generally have shorter holidays and many of those are crammed between two weekends therefore a Saturday departure is perfect. Often overlooked are the physiological flight times departing Boston at 7.45am with a scheduled arrival time of 1.30pm, allowing most visitors time to journey from the airport to accommodation, check-in, unpack and possibly sea bathe before dark. The return flight leaves at 2.35pm, so even after allowing time at the airport a midday check-out with almost a full morning in the sun.
Equally important is that it gives us a direct service out of New England and it is difficult to see what better visitor demographics could be presented to us. Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and even upstate New York cities like Albany, suddenly become a lot closer and substantially more accessible, dispensing with timely connections through JFK or Liberty Airports.
Having stated many of the pluses there is absolutely no room for complacency either in the public or private tourism sector. We have a summer of opportunity and while many still believe we can increase our dependency on tour operators or wholesalers to fill those seats my thoughts are that this industry is a people business and frankly it always will be.
The BTA (then) and BHTA Capital Radio bus promotional tour of the British mainland was in my humble opinion a tremendous idea and maybe this is one of the best approaches to entice New Englanders to our shores. We have this incredible myriad of accommodation options, a wonderful choice of restaurants and very few can take our amazing climate out of the equation. A group of hoteliers, villa rental agencies, attractions and activity operators travelling together with one sole common purpose, to drive additional arrivals. While a lot more has to be done before this could happen, such a road show could take place when airfares and hotel rates start to fall from the second week of September in that part of the USA, helping to keep down participation costs. Somebody should do the math and ask the question – what reasonable revenue could be generated for the country with a potential 4,000 extra visitors staying on average 7 days.

Pingback: Barbados is an Attractive Product
As a resident of a Boston suburb, and a frequent Barbados visitor, the JetBlue flights are a huge plus to this market. However, this will only be an advantage for tourism if these flights are supported by a significant marketing effort. Barbados can now compete with other nonstop flight destinations, but only if consumers are made aware of the flights AND informed about all the wonderful aspects of this destination. This is a huge opportunity for Barbados and it will be interesting to see how it is approached.

Confused from Christ Church here. “the benefits derived from the (DLP) policies especially having the vision and foresight of bringing on board a world known brand like sandals”.
Help muh pleez. Sandals took over an existing hotel. So there can be no claim to have dramatically increased arrivals as a result of their presence. Sandals has already delayed (and likely to continue to do so) rebuilding of Almond which, again, was an existing hotel which Mr W. seems to be managing quite well thank you.
The ‘benefits’ (since it is an all inclusive resort with little incentive to go out and splash dollars all over the island) seem mostly to accrue to Mr Sandal with his most generous ‘incentives’. And even then, what percentage of the Sandals dollar will remain in Barbados? And I don’t mean in ‘brown envelopes’.

The consortium never ceases to amaze me. Do they actually want people to believe that the so called increase in tourism is due to the fact that a Sandals hotel is in Barbados? Irene, et al, you are idiots!!!!
However, before I jump on the band wagon, I must first determine how the tourism figures were calculated. Did the government compare this year’s first quarter with that of 2014, or did they compare the last quarter of 2014 with the first quarter of 2015?

If you were to peruse the web-sites of hotels such as the Golden Era Hotel or the Old Gin House in St. Eustatius, you will see a section dedicated to advertising the island. There is information relative to the history of St. Eustatius, how to get there and activities tourist can partake in, as well as maps of the island.
Sandals’ web-site advertises only Sandals and its products. I could not find any information that could have been interpreted as advertising Barbados.

Prime Minister of Grenada puts Barbados tourism officials to shame
Grenada scores tourism victory as Prime Minister lands Sandals
Prime Minister of Grenada, the Hon. Tillman Thomas, recently described the purchase of the former La Source by Sandals as ‘a potential game-changer for our tourism industry’. He went on to say that the entry of resort company Sandals to Grenada’s market is ‘a tide that could lift all boats’.
I think he is right, perhaps in more ways that we can initially anticipate.

now fast forward two years later and the hypocrisy has no bounds to see that adrein is now using a different measuring stick to beat the barbados govt over the head in adding sandals to the barbados tourist market,,,indeed some people are shameless and bold faced hypocrites,, see why nobody take adrein seriously cause all have come to the realization that he wears two hats all at the same time on one head and they both belong to him. no wonder he can boast that he is neither B or D,,but a true die in the wool independent because in the long term when the rubber hits the road it is all about him

here is another one of your beautiful shots right outside the ball park against Freundel Stuart
It was reported that La Source only closed around the 19th October, when 150 workers were laid-off. Yet, within three weeks the Government of Grenada ‘facilitated their (Sandals) investment with a package of incentives’. While other administrations around the region hesitated, procrastinated and some may even imply, might have adopted a form of hibernation akin to prolonged sleep.
Among the immediate benefits of the arrangement are, massive media destination awareness coverage, reaching millions of people worldwide without it costing the Grenada Board of Tourism a single cent. With a projected re-opening date of 15th December 2012, it will give a huge boost to the upcoming critical winter season. Many loyal Sandals clients will also want to sample the brand, in a new and exciting location. And as PM Tillman so astutely observed, was pleased at the ‘promise of the transfer of skills to Grenadians and an improvement of service in the industry’.

Oil Prices Fall, and the Global Economy Wins
Although that might not be good news for oil producers, it’s great for consumers and the global economy. A report by Andrew Kenningham, senior global economist at Capital Economics, attempts to gauge the difficult-to-measure global lift from lower oil prices. “A $10 fall in the price of oil transfers the equivalent of 0.5 percent of world GDP from oil producers to oil consumers,” he writes. That in turn will have a knock-on effect on global consumption, because consumers tend to spend more of their income than businesses. Assuming consumers spend half their savings from cheaper oil, Kenningham continues, “a $10 fall in the oil price would boost global demand [for goods and services] by 0.2 to 0.3 percent.”

In a major step, the United States has begun approving licenses for a number of ferry companies to operate services between the United States and Cuba.

The Greatest Water Crisis In The History Of The United States
What are we going to do once all the water is gone? Thanks to the worst drought in more than 1,000 years, the western third of the country is facing the greatest water crisis that the United States has ever seen. Lake Mead is now the lowest that it has ever been since the Hoover Dam was finished in the 1930s, mandatory water restrictions have already been implemented in the state of California, and there are already widespread reports of people stealing water in some of the worst hit areas. But this is just the beginning. Right now, in a desperate attempt to maintain somewhat “normal” levels of activity, water is being pumped out of the ground in the western half of the nation at an absolutely staggering pace. Once that irreplaceable groundwater is gone, that is when the real crisis will begin. If this multi-year drought stretches on and becomes the “megadrought” that a lot of scientists are now warning about, life as we know it in much of the country is going to be fundamentally transformed and millions of Americans may be forced to find somewhere else to live.
Simply put, this is not a normal drought. What the western half of the nation is experiencing right now is highly unusual. In fact, scientists tell us that California has not seen anything quite like this in at least 1,200 years…
snip
In case you are wondering, of course this emerging water crisis is going to deeply affect our food supply. More than 40 percent of all our fruits and vegetables are grown in the state of California, so this drought is going to end up hitting all of us in the wallet one way or another.
And this water crisis is not the only major threat that our food supply is facing at the moment. A horrific outbreak of the bird flu has already killed more than 20 million turkeys and chickens, and the price of eggs has already gone up substantially…

I find this posting from Adrian desperate and tragic. I am aware that he is a hotelier and has a vested interest in promoting the tourist trade within Barbados. He places too much emphasis on tourist numbers? Are we to assume that the arrival of 4,000 Americans will automatically produce a growth in our GDP figures? I would like to know the true figure of how much money we make from the tourist industry. I believe that it would be dismal.
As our economy shrinks we seem to be focusing most of our efforts on promoting our tourist industry. So much for diversification! If we are to put our eggs in one basket, then we should fully commit to making Barbados a place fit for tourists. The interior of the country and the coastline should be beautified. This would include landscaping the island, renovating Barbados historic buildings and adopting a strategy where Bajan homeowners become real stakeholders of the tourist industry by opening up their homes to tourists.
Sea, sand and jump-up-music are fundamental to those tourists who have a stereo-typical view of a Caribbean holiday; however, this will never be enough for the sophisticated traveller.
