Barbadians have proven once again that we live in a society where the vast majority of us prefer to bury our heads in the sand. The furore, created by the publication of a story about two school children having sex at school, has given me the impression that too many people preferred not to find out about this in a public forum. That would have allowed them to continue to delude themselves that all is well in our schools.

I must admit that the Nation could have been a bit more restrained in its delivery of the story. But I believe that it is high time that the decadence that is being nurtured, in our schools, is exposed. When children go to school, they ought not to be exposed to illicit sexual behaviour, either as a participant or spectator. Unfortunately, when instances of serious bad behaviour are discovered, the authorities go into cover up mode ostensibly to protect the good name of the school. It would appear that little thought is given to the welfare of the affected children or the law when they investigate and deal with school-based child sexual abuse and other crimes.

Over the years, there have been many reports of little school girls being introduced to sex far too early by their teachers. The method of dealing with these matters vary, but in most cases, the perpetrators get away with a slap on the wrist, and are allowed to continue their activity until they are caught again or retired.

Mind you, sexual exploitation of school children is nothing new: it is just hidden to protect the parties. Many years ago, a principal impregnated one of his students, and rather than fire the bastard, he was given leave to pursue a masters. Effectively, he was given time to allow the dust to settle and he returned to school as if nothing had happened. Thankfully he is now retired.

Since then his place of shame has been taken. Last year, a male teacher, at a secondary school was caught having sex with one of his students on school premises. The child’s mother was called in and informed about what transpired. She fainted. The child has been transferred to another government secondary school. And the part-time teacher is still employed at the same school and free to repeat his behaviour. Apparently, this matter was handled in-house without reference to the Education Ministry.

This type of behaviour has damaged the foundation of mutual respect that should exist between student and teacher. It is causing a breakdown of discipline throughout the schools. Sex between school children is bad enough but it is far worse when one of the participants is a teacher.

  1. If u caswell know of such illegal sexual acts between teacher and children as a citizen your duty should be to present such findings to the RBPF . not to come here on BU and use the BU bully pulpit to castigate the public for decrying and being outrage at The Nation exploitation of Children engaging in a sex act. You really believe the bajan public is stupid and knows absolutely nothing .However the bajan public knows illegalities and frowns upon such behaviour and rightfully was outraged at the nation.

As usual, your silly side has come to the fore, but let me ask: Do you have another side?

In the first incident that I cited, the Ministry deducted maintenance from the principal’s salary; and in the second, the principal called in the parent and they decided to hush it up. Why do you think it is my duty to report this matter when the parents and the school authorities refused to do anything?

  3. I sometimes think that AC is simply perverse for perversion sake – for no-one surely can be quite that dumb and vexatious.

  4. Some of you need to understand the virtue of being patient, it is a virtue you know. Assess a comment for its merit to you and if you do not think it worthy move on. The BU household has perfected it.

  5. U caswelll think everybody dumb u used this article as a retort to excuse the Nation explotation of children which the RPBF is now going to investiagte. Yes u throw in the teacher and student escapades as away of avoidance. everybody knows if such incidents but again my question to you since u have stated of being aware of such illegalities . why not go to the RBPF .however given your last comment it is apparant it is none of ur business. ur business is to tell bajans how stupid they are and how to think.

  6. ‘BU has perfected it’

LOL. You what? David doesn’t all this patience stick in your throat?

  7. @Ross

When you understand that we all bring different perspectives even if we think ignorant, it really does not matter. In fact it becomes a weakness to respond to such comments…lol.

METHINKS THAT YOU HAVE ERRED IN THIS OPINION

It mind-boggles me when people comment on here for the sake of commenting without listening carefully to the message being put forth. Such is this case with this AC person whose comments at times, are totally hog wash. Notwithstanding that Mr. Franklyn can spew a roll of do do some times, from what he has written he is spot on with his assessment of the events that will continue to transpire more-so than the event that took centre stage in the public’s’ outcry.

Many years ago back in the early to mid 80’s at a School in the Pine, the games teacher there was known for spying at the girls in the adjacent changing room to that of the boys. He was seen trying to seduce a very pretty school girl in doing some business for him. The boys caught the SOB and what did he do…moved quickly to have the boys brought before the retired female principal for chastisement. The only thing saving them was the amount of CXC’s they were doing that year. Since then the ‘goodly’ gentleman has gone on to be unionist and a writer of columns. The boys were telling the truth about this predator but the principal scolded the boys and they were flogged by the games teacher the next week for refusing to wear their games clothes as an act of protest against this pervert.

The moral to all of this is that there are moral issues in this society that are not being addressed in the proper manner. Why should the decay not affect the children when they see the perversions and perverts every day, CASWELL YOUR STORY IS VERY TRUE and BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN. Ignore the detractors.

  11. AC hogwash is absolutely correct. Caswell is trying to do damage control for the Nation. nobody in their right mind would condone any illecit sexual behaviour between adult and children the revelation of the Nation article and the heat and blacklash that has occured it is obvious that “one of its own would use a detraction of some sort to take the spotlight off the NATION. Dumb ac Stupid NOT.

  12. Where there is no love , the young girls will be abused by male and female teachers. Many of the innocent children come from homes where love is absent, they seek affection but are abused by the greedy. It starts in the home , better parenting . Teachers must respect and guide

  13. ac……….some years ago (can’t remember the exact year) on one of my trips to Barbados, a teacher was accused of having sex with a minor, he was brought to court and other teachers supported him, he had no end of supporters because of the bajan mentality as it regards having sex with minors, eventually it all faded away, i wonder why?? it made the news, where were you to defend the minor child and see that the teacher was imprisoned??

  14. The Police Force has advised that it will conclude its investigation on Wednesday.

  15. ac

But, rightly or wrongly, you come with the anti-Nation agenda. Fine. You’ve made your position clear enough. But that does not entitle you to “hogwash” the main ‘thrust’ of the Caswell argument – which is that these things go on and we need to find ways of dealing with it. In other words there is a non sequitur in your argument which, in any event, is couched in your typically abusive, dismissive, language.

Moreover, you must understand that not everyone agrees with your allegation that the Nation pic was ‘pornography’ (an allegation you don’t explore) or that it “exploited children” etc etc. For Caswell, as for me, the descriptive element in the story was unnecessary – so that there is that much agreement between us all.

I never saw the video. I am told by someone who has that there was nothing in it which went beyond what we all saw in the single frame. And in that, we saw what exactly?

  16. I believe that all the nasty disgusting things that are going on in Barbados both in the school systems and public at large should be brought to everyone’s attention no matter who fools become upset about it. For the most part, Barbadians are illiterate not for lack of education but for lack of knowledge and doing what is right and just. The nasty politicians; the nasty preachers, the lawyers who are commiting fraud and stealing from their clients especially the elderly and unlearne should all be brought to justice. The laws in Barbados are so corrupted that one devil cannot correct another and that is why the country is in such bad condition! There is no justice whatsoever for the poor and under privilege anywhere not only Barbadian. People everywhere has taken God out of their mix because man now has become a God unto themselves!

SATAN CANNOT CORRECT SATAN AND THAT IS WHAT BARBADOS IS ALL ABOUT. THE DEVIL IS NOW IN CONTROL OF THE WORLD AND BARBADOS IS NO DIFFERENT!

To you RR the art of perfection is standing up for what one belives and not be swayed ! guided ! pressured or influenced by others opinion. that is what makes an “ac”…….”

Now ac do you really believe in what you preach?
You take umbrage with Caswell for saying the Nation Newspaper should not be demonized for being the messenger to the moral conscience of the ‘nation’.
Even if in the exposé the newspaper was a bit over exuberant in the details of reporting the facts surrounding the moral degradation of your pretentiously hypocritical social cesspool is the Newspaper morally wrong in drawing to a wider audience the social and moral goings-on in your ‘lily-white’ Barbados?

Why then don’t you criticize your PM of false integrity for not only lying to a little boy without an apology but, more disgracefully, for actually witnessing voter fraud and refusing to ensure the relevant law enforcement agencies including the EBC carry out investigations similar to those proposed with respect to the ‘underage sex story’ reported in the Nation’s Sun on Saturday.
Are we going to see similar follow-up action regarding the recent threats made against the life of a Minister of the Crown?

What do you have to say about that? If you fail to see the connections in the moral ‘dilemmas’ identified above we would have no alternative other than to say you will be proving Robert Ross right in his assessment of you when he wrote:
“I sometimes think that AC is simply perverse for perversion sake – for no-one surely can be quite that dumb and vexatious.”

@ Robert Ross: That is one of the most incisively impressive comments made by the BU literati. A rare find of a gem among the sandstones of wit and wisdom to be included in the compendium of quotations of great writers and social commentators.
One point of criticism that makes it not originally perfect. Do you think AC can outperform CCC when it comes to perversion of the perfect kind?

  20. @Well Well
eventually it all faded away, i wonder why?? it made the news,

Literally fade away,as one of the solutions was to change the colour of that schools uniform.

But ac is in a class of her own in this regard.

After “Peter W” ran off with his tail between his legs, and “Dictionary” and “Living in Barbados” left, ac filled that breech admirably…and all on her own….especially since her man left for Arizona…. 🙂

We have to admire David for retaining an idiot of such talent here on BU….. What a blog!

  22. Fuh u bush Tea u come here with your condemation .yet u were unapologetic and in agreement with aparent beatng of a child with a 2×4 .now you up in here talking about teachers and students sexuality .u are a real hypocrite u sure have a doublestandard

  23. One thing for sure i will condem all no matter the reason or intent when it comes to exploitation of children or abuse unlike those like the bushteas and others of his ilk who can cherry pick right from wrong to support their position an ideaologies of child abuse.

  24. Dumbert ac. You said “If u caswell know of such illegal sexual acts between teacher and children as a citizen your duty should be to present such findings to the RBPF”.
    ………………………………………………………………………………………..
You really love to be noticed. Why you don’t move Nelson and stand in his place. You will be well noticed. How is it that a big able officer in an arrestable position overheard two people threatening the life of the MoF and instead of pursuing the matter, the MoF used Parliament and up til now, not a man ain’t get charge As I stated before. Nothing is wrong in exposing this sordid sex affair using the picture, what might be questionable is the expression of language used. So ac. stop your opposing syndrome.

  25. ac, you said “….cherry pick right from wrong to support their position an ideaologies of child abuse”
    …………………………………………………………………………………..
Two juveniles having sex. Where is the child abuse. Was an adult involved?

  26. How iinteresting that u TMW would suggest that ac prostiute self on Nelson street. in ur blantant attack to defend the indefenseless that is simulation of a child in a sex/act by the nation. Not surprrising that some men would view the news article and its simulation as credible .When did defending the rghts of a child become illegal.

  27. I did my private investigations with some school children, what was written/shown in the Nayion is just the tip of the iceberg of matters at happens at almost all the secondary and a few primary schools. What the police and the MOE needs to investigate the level of this immorality at our schools and stamp it out. They need to thank the Nation Newspaper for bring BOLD enough to report a matter of such grave problem in our schools.

  28. @Bush Tea

Man leave ac alone. Now she will think she is the “clown princess of BU”.

Man, why dont you join me on vacation? Leave wifey alone and let’s hit Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, do. I may be passing on Bim next year. Getting older, need to see more of the world.

Hit it, but not like Typhoon Haiyan,I hope.

  34. It really bothers me that this known pervert will return to school tomorrow, ostensibly to teach music but in fact he would be there to prey on somebody’s little girl with the full knowledge of the school’s management team. I am told that the deputy principal initially wanted the pervert’s head but decided to play ball because she was looking to fill one of the then upcoming vacancies for principal.

Even after hiding up this crime for the sake of career advancement, the deputy applied for a vacant post, and you could say that she got her hopes Dashed because her principal gave her less than a glowing report.

  35. @ Caswell……….be careful how you choose your words.

………………………………… Maybe our police need to take a leaf out of Britain’s Scotland Yard’s book, who have in the last two years launched Operation Yewtree, going back some 40 plus years, which so far have netted ,a number of celebrity perverts, rapists and molesters like Jimmy Saville, Dave Lee Travis, Freddie Starr , Gary Glitter ,Paul Gambaccini and Rolf Harris.

You are on point Colonel, the island is riddled with perverts, i would not even make the excuse anymore that they inherited their perversions from the British, since they are now adults, most of them are professionals of varying levels and degrees, they know right from wrong and it has been many centuries since the british forced their perversions on the ancestors of black people. Starting from both political parties DLP/BLP down to the man/woman in the street, it’s equal opportunity perversion, and no laws in place to arrest the culprits, some of them are too connected……….and the beat goes on.

It would be most off-putting a position to quote anything from your contribution. However, we would wish to point out the same school children you would want to protect from abuse and exploitation in your altruistically passionate bias and animosity against a newspaper are using the same technology used to record the alleged sexual interaction to read and understand every word contained in your most ‘intellectually enlightening and morally uplifting’ comments that act as exemplars of decent behaviour in social discourse and formal communications.

    Keep it up, hypocrite!

  45. U know i have come to the conclusion that bajans likes stagnation. moving forward too hard to do. keep things the same ole way… LEAVE US ALONE WE LIKE IT THAT WAY.

  46. Mr Franklyn I was just told to read this blog. You know I’m glad you wrote about the situation at the Foundation school. How is it that the information was kept so quiet and swept under the carpet and the teacher, he is still there teaching girl children.

  47. Harold

I am not prepared to confirm or deny the name of the school that does not matter. The point I am trying to make is that the problem is widespread and the authorities pretend that it is not happening. In so doing, they are enabling serial child abusers. We only pay lip service to protecting our children.

    >

  48. Caswell Franklyn Avatar

If the principal that kept on a known child molester were Jeff Broomes can you imagine what would happen. Oh! I forgot we don’t have to guess, I recall that Roger Broomes was alleged to have been involved in questionable conduct and he was removed. In this case, a teacher was caught with his pants down and today he is still employed, presumably to carry on his behaviour.

The management team of this school should be removed post-haste for failing to protect the little girls from evil.

    >

  49. a teacher had sex with a student but was allowed to take time off and return back to school, thats the problem right there because he should be dragged before the courts and be sent to jail, but barbados culture is like grown men can have sex with girls as young as 16 and nothing happens, you see grown men alongside the street calling at school girls, if a teacher just make the slightest approach to a girl in a sexual way, the girl should inform her parents, if the courts dont do something, then the teacher should get the result of the parents, because how come the ministry didnt fire the principal when he had sex with a minor, barbados have to start acting and stop talking, and I dont think anything will happen if or when you call the police, because the police need the support from the courts and ministry of education. Some male teachers abuse the vulnerable young girls, but these girls have to consult their parents or mothers to let the teachers know, they cant be satisfying their sexual needs in the schools, teach the kids, not sexually abuse them. Some teachers leave school at 19 or 20 and start to teach, they should be attending classes not only in academics but how to interact with kids in every way, inappropriate behavior is called for immediate dismissal, and you young girls if a teacher or a male older than you approach you in a sexual way, let them know, they need to go home to their wives or girlfriends, but some young girls need the money or support from these older men, so there is always more to the story.

  50. You also owe the children of Barbados a fiduciary duty as a father to inform the law of this Caswell…..what do you think? ….your lack of.. could be deemed non-contributory negligence LOL
