  1. This is a bunch of BS. It takes a great deal of effort to respond to the crap that is posted on a continually basis, but this time I had to. If the food supply is so bad, I ask one question: why is the life expectancy going up?

Just got back from an EU vacation, and I can tell you that I had to struggle to find good healthy food there as compared to the US. The difference is they walk everywhere vs. we drive. But their food is crappy and there is less options.

  2. Sockeye salmon can’t be farmed. In the ocean they eat lots of shrimp and they have not yet found a replacement diet for them. All other salmon is. Canada recommends low intake of farmed salmon for children and pregnant mothers. Fresh and canned sockeye salmon is expensive up here, but I always take some home for friends and relatives. You can only catch sockeye for 6 to 8 weeks of the year. Natives can catch them every day when the season is open, other fishers two days a week if they are using nets and five days if lines.

Canada has banned American dairy products because of the hormone used there. It, however, does not stop people going across the border and buying it because it is cheaper. I make sure all my meat and dairy products are Canadian. I have started eating bison, deer and elk. Expensive, yes, but farmed locally without hormones.

I notice that we are now getting papayas from the Dominion Republic, as well as mangoes. these used to come mainly from Mexico.

  3. yes it is true.i am in canada and these foods are not allowed here.
they all have problems of some sort.farmed salmon has a virus now.
    and all is true.

  4. tells you how much you bajans know about the real outside world doesn’t it/
jokers.dont believe. eat it up.more oxygen for me. ha ha
and by the way your Caribbean fish has mercury levels above the allowed % in canada also.why ya think wunna is behave like mad people.??
    ha ha well well well.idiots.

  5. The corporate solution to having to deal with pesky government bans on various food products over safety concerns about said products is being worked on as we speak.

This is being accomplished through negotiations of trade agreements (the latest being the TPP or Trans Pacific Partnership) where governments representatives sit across the table from negotiators promoting corporate rights and interests and representing large, multi-national agro-chemical and agro-industrial corporations.

Public input and concerns from organizations (environmental, human rights, trade unions etc) and scientists who would raise matters that would concern ordinary taxpayers such as environmental issues or the negative economic impacts that will inevitably flow from these trade agreements are effectively shut out and excluded from the negotiations.

    See this recent blog post from The Huffington Post;

From the Experimental GMO Fields of Kauai to the TPP: Connecting the Dots

Much attention has been turned in recent months to the fact that the agro-chemical/GMO industry — corporate giants Dow, Pioneer DuPont, Syngenta, Monsanto, BASF — have been using Hawaii since the 1990s as one of their main testing grounds for experiments engineering new pesticide-crop combos. On the “Garden Island” of Kauai, the industry controls over 15,000 acres of prime agricultural land, which they drench with over 17 tons of restricted-use pesticides each year, and likely at least five times that amount in non-restricted pesticides that may be equally as harmful (such as glyphosate).

    snip

    The TPP
At the international level, through the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) these same chemical corporations are seeking to lock us in to arrangements that guarantee their profit interests will not be impeded by pesky democratic governments protecting people’s health or other common interests. The TPP is a highly secretive international agreement being negotiated under the pretext of “trade” between twelve Asian and Pacific Rim countries, including the United States. If passed, it will amount to perhaps the biggest corporate power-grab in history, putting the rights of corporations above those of elected governments and sovereign nations.

Under the cryptic title of “Investor State Dispute Settlement” (ISDS), foreign corporations could challenge national and local laws and regulations that undermine their expected profits, holding tax-payers liable for these losses. Challenges could be brought for everything from attempts to regulate pesticide use to health warnings on cigarettes. Governments would be tried in private offshore tribunals that lack transparency and due process.

  6. The situation is dire here. Our food security still languishing at almost nil, our import bill humongous and worst of all, dangerous. Yes, we are told here in Barbados to grow a little patch of food behind our homes, a little backyard farming is absolutely necessary, but we do not know if we are using Genetically Modified or Engineered seeds and we are covering everything in herbicide and pesticide because our Ministry of Agriculture sees it fit to push both these products.

Right now our soil, water and reefs are all compromised and so is our health. It is foolish to say that life expectancy is going up. Who is giving those statistics? The same people who want us to swallow that eating foods that are GMO and who make the poison we cover our plants in? Give me a break. Here in Barbados we have a hospital so filled that ICU cannot sometimes give a man in trouble a bed. We have diabetes coming out of the woodwork, we are the capital of “cut-off-he-leg” or arm or foot or whatever. Heart attacks are occurring more than the heart can take, some dropping down in the street or on the bus just so. Cancer has the cancer society busy ’bout hey too, and as we know with a child like Keana Banfield, some picking up strange viruses or bacteria that our doctors here are baffled about as well as those abroad. Why can we not wake up before all of this becomes an epidemic?

What is so wrong to want clean, decent food made available to us? Why can’t Barbados, such a tiny island, be what it should be and that is devoid of GMO and devoid of pesticides and herbicides. What is the problem with wanting healthy? And being healthy? And serving good traditional clean foods from at home in our own kitchens right into our little side-ah-road, small eateries and gourmet restaurants? Why are we being so indoctrinated that we cannot see the light?

Could it be because the US Big Daddy just might get on our case, drop some much needed dollars from our US help that we are prepared to stand idly by and watch our country deteriorate into one big mess? Has anyone looked into what Monsanto tries to do to countries – in fact their own country – that dare begin the banning of the crap they produce?

And by the way, does anyone know how these companies work together with pharmaceutical ones? Does anyone realize how much money would be lost if this island goes clean? Lost money in the poisons we import, and lost money in the legal drugs we import. Lost to whom you may ask. Lost to companies like Monsanto and all those pharmaceutical ones too. None want to see profits drop because one island dares to get clean?? Keep ‘um chuped and sick is the motto. If you care to, scour the internet, see how big companies like Monsanto lobby with money, big money, to get their share of the huge market that we seem to believe is doing us good. Why do you think that being a lobbyist in the US brings in more money than a brain surgeon could evah make? Two and two is not three for a lobbyist, two and two is twenty for them and nothing stops them from gaining more of that green back, their fees are huge in order to pass on money to anyone in government who can make a difference in the voting for or against something. How do you believe Monsanto is still alive and kicking today? Yes, they are losing ground but not enough yet for them to get real worried, but worried they are. And the more worried they are, is the more they will put out information, by whatever means, to tell the sheep that the grass they are eating is only good when sprayed.

More GMO food says Monsanto will be grown to feed more people. Ha! More like more GMO food will be grown for more sheep. The myth continues whilst we glorify these people, these murderers of everything that nature has given us by whatever means it was created. Whether you believe in God or not, nature is all, and we seem to be content to allow poison to get rid of it all, including us.

And if it takes radicals, like myself, to try at least to put some little amount of stoppage to them, so be it. I refuse to eat US killer food. I refuse to eat food pesticides have been sprayed on. I refuse to eat food I know is filled with unnatural preservatives. I refuse to drink Pine Hill as long as those cows I know are fed milk-making enhancers supply them with milk. I simply refuse a lot of things until I know they are clean and fit for human consumption. I read labels and investigate words that I do not understand. If we, each one of us, would do the same, and refuse to buy killer foods, refuse to purchase those poisons available everywhere, it will be a start.

If teachers around this country could begin educating our children, within the curriculum, to investigate and be aware of good foods, we will change ourselves and clean up our island. If groups that push agriculture in schools would push only clean agriculture, that would be a start. We might even become healthy and wealthy and therefore wise. I would ban vendors from selling all those unhealthy bags of yellow crap sold at every corner of schools around the country, the vendors need not lose much-required money if they started selling healthy. There are snacks that are healthy. Think! Investigate! Start the ball rolling! Fish cakes made with cassava flour for instance, and by the way we can salt our own fish and stop having to import saltfish – another saving!

Barbados has the ability to feed itself. It is simple. Again, even information on the internet shows us how to grow tons of food on an acre of land. Our Agricultural Ministry has more than that under its hat. There is enough land owned by them to feed the people clean, decent, healthy food. But instead they are actually advising the people to use poison. Imagine that? Has it occurred to anyone to look into what RoundUp does by just being sprayed into the air, far less our soil and plants. Does anyone realize that RoundUp is made by those same people that gave us ‘safe’ DDT, and ‘safe’ Agent Orange??? Dear Lord. We have to wake up. We just have to. If China, one of the countries that actually seems to not give a hoot about what its manufacturers do, can ban certain foods because of their danger, who are we for Christ’s sake – yes! for Christ’s sake!

The world has begun to ban Monsanto (even some states in the US), banning its products, little by little the bigger countries are waking up while we remain asleep because we have always been so gullible to the US, they have us in their clutches so well let me tell ya. How foolish can we be? Has the water been affecting our brain, has the food we eat begun to cause not enough oxygen in the birth canal. What is the problem I ask again to want CLEAN HEALTHY FOOD?

If you do not want to think for yourselves beyond just living and letting be. Think this. To this day one of the biggest groups of people who travel and spend money are foodies. Gourmands. The majority of them are looking for good, clean, traditional foods cooked in ways to titillate their palates. They will travel the world searching for the exotic. And spend big money too. If Barbados becomes a clean, non-pesticidal, non-herbicidal country, and we offer organic, good food, we could become the capital of food tourism. We have so many different foods/menus from so many different islanders and big countries who have made their homes here, we can offer clean Guyanese, Trini, Jamaican, Middle Eastern, Jewish, Indian (Hindu and Muslim), Chinese, Peruvian, Venezuelan, European just to name of few as additions to our fabulous Bajan fare. Even American foods as long as they are stamped as being 100% organic – buy from those states that have banned GMO and other Monsanto poisons. Barbados has a lot to offer in comparison to many other tourism destinations and we are losing it because of indifferent foods, expensive foods and accommodations, a tired product all in all. Believe you me when I say that all can be rectified when we can proclaim to the world that we are a CLEAN ORGANIC country.

I know it will take years upon years for us to become certified organic, that is why I like to use the world ‘CLEAN’ but we must start somewhere and sometime, and the time is certainly NOW. By the way studies done at Wisconsin University have proven that farming is not made more viable because of pesticides and ‘clean’ is actually cheaper and yield more after the first year. Read:

    http://wi.water.usgs.gov/gwcomp/integrate/OrganicFarms.pdf

Surely as Barbadians we should know what is killing in our food. What is killing in our water. And what is killing us on our reefs. And ensure that we bring back health to our country. It is us the people who have to insist on this.

Our manufacturers of food need to be monitored for the ingredients they are using – are they using preservatives that are banned? Preservatives that those who make them know we are not checking on, so their losses from one country can be made back with another dumb one? Does our feed contain growth hormones, hidden agendas that we know nothing about?

We can stop all of this now while there is still time. It takes not only a ban but it takes the people to educate themselves, understand that information is available on everything, check out that information and make some good choices re the food one feeds their children. It takes many to realize that clean farming is good and can be a profitable business, it takes a government to believe in this and to ensure that farmers get the subsidies, the protection they need to grow decent food. There is much happening on the island that is good by the way. We now have fabulous cassava, breadfruit, sweet potato, even green banana flour being made with local crops – but what are we putting on some of those crops bothers me still. I ensure that these flours come from clean methods. I can now buy clean eggs, chicken and pork because those farmers realize that they can still produce quantities without the added poison and they will not feed their children anything but the best. Holders market has a lot of clean food. Cheapside market has a section. I spoke to one of the supervisors of the market ans asked why not put up a sign that says CLEAN FOOD SECTION for ALL those who grow without pesticides. I see Super Centre have up an Organic sign, but I am worried about the carrots and cabbage they have in their packs. Are they really looking into the truth of what they have under the sign organic? Is there someone at the supermarket who understands organic, ensuring all they have under that sign is indeed organic, or can anyone come in and say “I am” and the purchase is made, the supermarket tray filled with a lie. We need to know these things. All of us need TO BE AWARE AND BEWARE.

Will it take one of our government officials to have the most horrendous of deaths in the family that can be directly pointed at the food we eat, the water we drink, the fish we catch to suddenly wake up and smell the gardenias in the midst of his/her torturous mourning? I pray not. I hope that we can make this transition into clean real fast because we have woken up from the slumber of stupidity and because the writing is on the wall. Those centenarians who are living today come from the era of clean food that we no longer have in full. And it was not only exercise that helped them to live long, it was a combination of good, clean food and exercise. Remember dat!

  7. @ Green Monkey. Thank you for that information. It needs to be read carefully. This is, to say the least, frightening. I think it is time to make a rocket that will fly me to another planet ’cause what is happening here is scary. One wonders if we are not one huge experimental station headed by aliens ’cause it is hard to believe that we humans could be so chuped as to want to make ourselves extinct. And I always ask the question too, where are these people who want to make so much money taking it. Is there a place to spend same after their demise? Or have they figured out a way to live for evah so they can spend it. Dear God help me to understand the vagaries of man!

    • Our popular talk show hosts are quick to jump on the cause of legalizing/decriminalizing marjuanna but something as important as food and food security, not a murmur. We surely have our priorities screwed.

    Well said.
The only rational explanation is that we must be brass bowls.

    @ David
    Talk show Hosts!?!
Shiite man. If we are depending on that set of brass bowls to guide us we may as well all line up for the KOOL aid.

I keep saying on this blog that Canada is very careful and specific about what they allow their citizens/residents to consume, i imported certain products into Canada and it was well examined. The pesticides/chemicals allowed into Barbados, will never be allowed to cross into the Canadian Border.

  10. Question here, I see there are some products e.g. baby formula with stickers that say ‘for sale in the Caribbean region only except for Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands’. What is the reason for that?

  11. i like to be informed but over informed makes me sick especially the negative kind………my blood pressure goes up .i become paranoid.. depression rares it ugly head and most noteworthy i overeat .too much Negative information can be a downer makes one want to give up,,,

Three guesses, the first two don’t count.

It is very important to be informed and understand what you are dealing with, so you can avoid the avoidable, if you want to remained uninformed you will eventually be slow poisoned.

  13. @ ac if there was no negative information to give out, it would not be given out. Here are some positive ones to make you feel better. There are a couple of farms in Barbados that have started the “clean food” campaign. I raise my hat to them. Nature’s Produce – great herbs, fantastic eggs. Michael at Holders Farmers Market for all manner of veggies. Hilary for fabulous raw milk at Holders Farmers Market. Nasim Degia for great food at Holders Farmers Market. Cheapside Market Organic Vendors under the stairs nearest to the butchers going up to the second floor. Mojo’s restaurant, the first restaurant in Barbados to make farm to table “clean” connections – they even grow their own herbs and some veggies behind the eatery. Chantel Sellman at Pelican Village who does a great job providing clean foods.

There are many good things happening on the island from the processing of cassava, breadfruit, sweet potatoes, green bananas into flour to the growing of fruit trees but we must point out the real bad stuff so we can increase the good ones. Barbados can do this so easily. Just takes some real planning by our Ministry of Agriculture and no fear of what bans could do. And even if they do not want to ban, perhaps more pamphlets on how to make your farm clean, how to make production on same devoid of insects by proper knowledge of what plants should be grown near to what other foods in order to keep bugs away, simple things like the use of vinegar to keep weeds away instead of RoundUp. I happen to know that the Ministry is well informed, what I do not understand is why this knowledge is not being imparted in a major way instead of blessing pesticides and herbicides.

We can only learn from the negative unfortunately. It is time.

    • Here is another bit of positive information. Dr. Chelston Brathwaite, our local food expert has been appointed Ambassador to China to replace Sir Lloyd. Perhaps we will now see China helping Barbados with food production, a fish farm maybe instead of loaning us money to build a hotel.

  14. no i would not be slow posioned in any event the brain can only absobed so much negative before one goes beserked, there is more than enough information on allthese topics, i for one ignore and live a sensible lifestyle by not engaing or over induldging, some people are glutons and no matter what is put before them they would eat, i avoid too much negative rather it be written or by tv programmes .it cause my heart rate to increase and i become fearful almost to the point of hopelessness and sleepness takes its toll on my fragile body, rather i prefer to dwell on the positive makes me want to live a lot longer and do better,

  15. ac is very serious about here comments was not intended to make light of the article, however my opinion should not be respresentative or should not make others deter from the relevancy of the article. i rather not engaed for the reasons i have pointed out , anyhow it makes me smile to see how warmed hearted some were in response by providing articles of a positive nature, there is something about bajans i like just can;t quite figure out why,

  16. @ David

The appointment of Sir Lloyd “Dropsy” Sandiford was singularly one of the greater incompetent rewards for doing nothing that this government has ever been a part of.

Jessica Odle is the counterpart awardee of the BLP, so lest the BLP/DLP “juxtaposers” come on the BU and chant their anti PIP chorus, I would dissuade you all since neither of you is without sin.

Five years along of a waste foop appointment where a man who is incapable of any vision is appointed to lead the diplomatic efforts of a flailing economy in the world’s most populous? nation.

See why we are where we are?

Rewarding the dolts of our society, those who were idiots when we knew them here and who, by some miraculous process of name calling and letters of accreditation, now are to be called ambassador!!

I give you Sandra Phillips in Brazil.

The point that i hope you are getting is that after each year of their wastefoopism in these exotic territories you mean that the leader of the waste foops, Fumble and anteriorly Seethru, cannot ask for and assess a report of their contributions to the economy of Barbados, and, given their colossal failures, recall the female rabbits?

What do they have to do to be correctly rewarded for their incompetence? Have their German Shepherd bite someone and invoke diplomatic immunity for the canine?

They must have the same legal beagle or diplomatic immunity as Mia Why you bite me daughter, or why you beat me St Lucian daughter.

  17. and the food we eat David! it has been shown that schizophrenics can be helped, the problem almost removed, by the use of a good dietary menu in their daily lives. Perhaps we have too many of these walking ’bout on the island hence all the negativity. So yes. We need to improve our air, our water and our food for positivity.

  18. As much as the anti-human, government co-opting, monopolizing, soulless, chemically reliant, avaricious, multinational agribusiness corporations would like us to think that only they have the expertise to produce food in the quantities needed to feed the world, there are alternative approaches that do work. But since there is no money to be made here, as it’s not something you can really slap a patent on, we don’t have filthy rich corporations spending billions of dollars in advertising to tell us about them.

    High-Performance Agriculture

Kempf grew up on a family farm in northeast Ohio. The farm was originally conventionally agriculture-oriented, and used large amounts of pesticides. The turnabout occurred during a particularly difficult three-year period in the early 2000s, when a significant portion of each year’s crop was lost to various pests and plant diseases.

In 2004, they began working some land on a neighboring farm where pesticides were not used. The difference was dramatic. Cantaloupes grown on their side were infested with Downy and powdery mildew, while the cantaloupes grown on the neighbor’s land had no infestation at all—despite the fact that the crops were immediately next to each other and received the same care.

“At that point, I became convinced that fungicides and pesticides were not the solution to the problems that we were experiencing,” Kempf says. “I wanted to know what the differences between healthy plants and unhealthy plants are, and what allows some plants to have a functional immune system that they can be resistant to disease and insect pests while the next one right beside it is susceptible.”

In a nutshell, what he subsequently learned, is that the foundation of health – whether we’re talking about plants, soils, animals, or people – really boils down to two things:

    Having adequate mineral nutrition, and
Having that nutrition, in the case of plants, be supplied by an active soil microbial community, or having a strong soil biology

By focusing on those two areas – plant nutrition and soil biology – the farm experienced an amazing turnaround, and it’s been completely chemical-free since 2006. Amazingly, as nutrition is improved in the plants, not only do they become naturally resistant to disease and insect pests, they also become hardier and better able to survive a wider range of climactic changes.

Even more importantly, healthier plants also form much higher levels of medicinal compounds and essential oils, such as phenolics, aromatics, and bioflavonoids. This is really what turns food into medicine… As explained by Kempf, these medicinal compounds are compounds that plants produce as plant protectants, meaning they protect the plant from things like ultraviolet radiation, insects, and pests. When you eat such plants, that functional immunity can then be transferred to you.

  19. PUDRYR;

Grateful for a partial translation of your above piece which appears to have been prompted by David’s post about the appointment of Dr Chelston Brathwaite as the new Ambassador to China. You said:-

“Five years along of a waste foop appointment where a man who is incapable of any vision is appointed to lead the diplomatic efforts of a flailing economy in the world’s most populous? nation.”

I know that you are a master of directed and brilliant obfuscation where the reader can reasonably read several meanings into any sentence you write. but are you comparing Brathwaite with Sandiford? Are you comparing Sandra Phillips with both of the above? Do you consider them all as waste foops?

I for one know all three of them and I consider, in hindsight for Sandiford, that he saved Barbados temporarily from the fate that Stuart is now leading us rapidly into. He is no waste foop. I consider Chelston Brathwaite as one of the most brilliant Barbadians of our times. I consider Sandra Phillips as a talented diplomat. They are not waste foops also imho.

Yuh certain yuh aint a past thin tall PS dat was at HC in the 50’s and used to write sporadically on BU under a different moniker?

  20. I read the above with much interest…and this is what I had posted on my Facebook page asking some questions. Bobbi McKay from BTA has promised to look into whether or not bromates are in our flour…and another Facebook friend asked to post these questions also to James Paul which I have done. It would be good to have some answers…because at least it will start the movement of not purchasing these items…I find it most dangerous and I am glad that BU has looked into it and found the site to be bona fide…we do get a lot of back and forth information from both sides…I tend to agree…no…I am adamant about the anti-pesticide completely and have always advocated a CLEAN FOOD Barbados…sadly no one seems to be paying attention…one only has to look at the petition that has been going on for several months now where it appears that more people who live outside of the country are interested in GMOs being banned than in Barbados…as the one who put up the petition on a bona fide site, it saddens me. This is not a political cry, this is not about putting any government down, this is simply about loving one’s country and wanting to see the best being done for it. And what better place to start with than food.

PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE ARTICLE..(meaning the article as posted above by BU)..AND I WANT TO KNOW (A) IS THIS A BONA FIDE ARTICLE/SITE..(answered by BU) .(B) AND IF IT IS I AM SURE THAT IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH YOU WOULD WANT TO KNOW IF THESE FOODS ARE BANNED HERE OR NOT, AND IF NOT, WHY NOT??? Also these questions come to mind for me:

    1. Can our restaurants tell us if the salmon they serve not farm grown, same question goes for supermarkets?

Where is this type of salmon banned:Australia and New Zealand

    2. Are ALL imported papaya to this country safe, if we are importing papaya that is….If we are, why? And are we growing papaya in this country with GMO seeds.

Where are GMO Papaya’s banned:The European Union

    3. Can this be said about our bread…or better yet about the flour we import..Bobbi McKay please please tell me that our flour is investigated and does not contain bromate and I quote “The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures. Bromated flour is “enriched” with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks…” now I know that commercial ready-made for bread flour is imported in this country…that I do know. Where it’s banned: Canada, China and the EU. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BAD THIS IS IF CHINA BANNED IT??? And please can u also Bobbi investigate that these are not used in the preservation of any product here in Barbados…and again I quote “BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are commonly used preservatives that can be found in breakfast cereal, nut mixes, chewing gum, butter spread, meat, dehydrated potatoes, and beer, just to name a few. BHA is known to cause cancer in rats, and may be a cancer-causing agent in humans as well. In fact, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, National Toxicology Program’s 2011 Report on Carcinogens, BHA “is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” It may also trigger allergic reactions and hyperactivity, while BHT can cause organ system toxicity.

Where it’s banned: The UK doesn’t allow BHA in infant foods. BHA and BHT are also banned in parts of the European Union and Japan.

    4. Has anyone in the Health Dept. of this island evah looked at this and I quote “if you live in the US and drink Mountain Dew and some other citrus-flavored sodas and sports drinks, then you are also getting a dose of a synthetic chemical called brominated vegetable oil (BVO), which was originally patented by chemical companies as a flame retardant.

Where is it banned: Europe and X Japan.

    5. And last but not least…have our dairy cows been tested…or better yet has the feed been tested for and I quote because this is THE MOST FRIGHTENING “Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is the largest selling dairy animal drug in America. RBGH is a synthetic version of natural bovine somatotropin (BST), a hormone produced in cows’ pituitary glands. Monsanto developed the recombinant version from genetically engineered E. coli bacteria and markets it under the brand name “Posilac.”

It’s injected into cows to increase milk production, but it is banned in at least 30 other nations because of its dangers to human health, which include an increased risk for colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer by promoting conversion of normal tissue cells into cancerous ones. Non-organic dairy farms frequently have rBGH-injected cows that suffer at least 16 different adverse health conditions, including very high rates of mastitis that contaminate milk with pus and antibiotics.

  21. Maybe starting with baby steps…finding out about the above…can help. I have written it all out again…I know BU posted above but as I know that sometimes we tend to skip the having to click on links….these are my questions. I really feel we deserve right answers.

  22. PUDRYR;
I however get your main point that many of our diplomats are actually square pegs in round holes. One only has to look at Goddard at the UN and Evelyn Greaves in Toronto and there are many others that aptly illustrate your point. But you don’t need to sully the names and contributions of some of those diplomats by calling them “waste foops”. They contributed meaningfully and I suspect more than most of us BU posters have done, to the Island and deserve less approbia in these posts since it wasn’t their individual faults that the relevant PM’s appointed them to those plum ambassadorial posts.

Cuss the PM’s who appointed them. not the ambassadors. Also name who you think would have been better ambassadors.

and the food we eat David! it has been shown that schizophrenics can be helped, the problem almost removed, by the use of a good dietary menu in their daily lives
    **********
Let me see how much tripe one can spout on the Internet, first of all MS can be cured by diet and now schizophrenia can be helped “almost removed” by diet. This shite is compounded by the number of people who fall for this crap.

To quote Straughn “it’s not a place for person truly seeking information and better understanding” ……I got some laetrile for sale any takers?

  24. Here is another one. Why is that no one wants to believe that much illness is caused by what we consume…or even what our parents consume…and most of all how easily it is to be convinced by doctors and pharmaceuticals that there is no other way but theirs? Another whole level of thinking is required. I am not saying that pharmaceuticals should be banned, many are good, but to say that nutrition is nothing to do with illness is sad and foolish. You can also read a real life story about schizophrenia by Kurt Vonnegut Jr and how his diet helped him through this…and over this!

  25. Rosemary……….thanks once again for trying to educate Bajans and the Caribbean at large about the realities of the world. These diplomats are clueless as to what is going on in the countries where they are posted, stupid titles gone to head syndrome.

  26. @ David
    LOL
Did Bushie not explain that a sergeant is a low level non commissioned officer? His is not to reason why…his is but to do and die….

Wunna people have NO IDEA how important to our whole physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional well being is what we choose to eat……
    NO IDEA!!!

  27. I think certain foods are labeled for Caribbean use only, is that they tend to put a lot more avian parts in it than other places. It seems some Barbadians tend to eat a lot of crow

  28. @ David
“Was the matter of food security even discussed in the last budget?”

I see in today’s Nation that Dr. Chelston Brathwaite is heading to China to replace Sir Erskine. Wasn’t Dr. Brathwaite preparing the White paper on Agriculture? Has the White Paper been completed? Scroll down to the bottom of the page on Ministry of agriculture website here http://agriculture.gov.bb/agri/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=645%3Abackground-document-on-a-white-paper-on-agriculture&catid=146&Itemid=115 and it says “It is expected that the White Paper on Agriculture will be available in early July, 2012.”

Wonder where it can be found?

  29. @Bushy & David
BT what are you trying to hang your hat on? I know you are itching to attack moi but that’s a piss poor effort. David put a link to an article on Psychology Today and the self styled sage of BU choose to adopt it as gospel, man you like is one of the chief Brass Bowls that you like to attack.

An observation that some schizophrenics also have celiac disease and presto if we deny them wheat based products their schizophrenia would disappear, what is the scientific basis for that conclusion? What is more brassbowlery than that?

BT try to be consistent for once in your life, try to reconcile your views on Economists with your views on Psychologists if you catch my drift, put a bunch of Psychologists and a bunch of Economists in two different rooms and ask them a question germane to their professions and see how many different answers you would receive.

Rise Sir BT Chief Brassbowl, I will prescribe some laetrile for your condition, David you may be excused.

  30. Lawd help us indeed. GMO has hit the brains already. Chemicals wired and burned up the thought process. Life will be short for many – and sometimes one wonders if this is indeed not the best thing. There must be intelligent life up there somewhere. Beam me up Scotty. I real ready. Seriously? David you certainly have the patience of Job. I commend you for that.

  31. Man Sargeant why don’t you rest yourself nuh? It is VERY simple minded to dismiss things that you do not understand.
Of course you are correct with respect to Bushie’s predisposition to attack you – you make a good foe. 🙂 …..but you invite such attacks when you jump at some topics that you may not fully understand and take strong positions.

The human body is a miracle.
It’s inter-relationships with our environment, our food, our weather, our climate IS NOT YET FULLY UNDERSTOOD.
The food that we eat is one of the principle influences in most aspects of our physiological well-being. AND because many of the mechanisms in our make-up are chemical, even our mental and spiritual well-being become a function of WHAT and WHEN we eat.

In such circumstances, one has to be brave, (or clueless) to dismiss claims of food impacting schizophrenia and MS etc. ..in either case Bushie will attack !! LOL

Check this one Sarge…you will love it.
There is a CLEAR indication that the increased use of shoes has led to significant increases in human health issues because of the electrical disconnect that most shoes cause in isolating us electrically from the grounding effect of the earth.

Try an walk bout barefooted hear…?”

There is much substance to your assertion. There is certainly an undisputed relationship between the electrical vibration from the earth emanating from its electrical core and magnetic poles and mankind physiological make-up and biorhythm.
Shoes are really meant for cold climes to help prevent frost bite. Natural leather sandals are really man’s only footwear not pedal cover-ups made of synthetic materials

The miller is in sync with you on this one.

  34. There is certainly an undisputed relationship between the electrical vibration from the earth emanating from its electrical core and magnetic poles and mankind physiological make-up and biorhythm.

COULD YOU EXPLAIN HOW THIS WORK TO ME SIR. SINCE ITS UNDISPUTED

  35. If Steve Jobs were alive he would explain it all Georgie Porgie. This man who hardly evah wore shoes, even when at University…turned out to be one of the most successful innovators when it came to computers. Perhaps he got a lot of electrical vibration from the core of the earth direct into his brain…now dying of cancer? well perhaps he was eating a lot of the above food that contained the chemicals that affected his metabolism.

I will never understand why it is necessary to have people explain every little detail of every little thing…you are on the internet…put in your questions to Ask or any other site…google if you will…and you will probably come up with many answers, some pro and some con, and then you can decide from the information given what you think makes sense. This earth was put together for every little thing in it to work in unison with another…from the air we breathe to the earth we sink our feet in…it is as simple as that. Never underestimate the powers of the earth and its relationship to mankind. It is more than that it is a fusion – one cannot do without the other – and as in any relationship if one part of it is not working…well there is trouble. And trouble is what we got with man moving away from his touch to the earth and all its provides for us in a natural way. Man is killing what we live on. Simply dat. It is all based on the same deal as bees cannot live without pollen. Pollen cannot live without bees. We, man, are killing our bees with pesticides, this is proven. So we killing the bees that create our food to start with. Move on from there and study the whole ting.

Your statement that “Wunna HC men does done know everything already….” is clearly false, especially when you consider the poor performance of HC men currently running the affairs of Barbados.

Please kindly note that I was once involved in organic farming and supplying hotels and supermarkets with produce.

GP…………….i will be brief, if people eat only pork, what do you think they will look like?? i know you understand well and just pulling my legs. Bajans are pork lovers, you can even tell that by looking behind the necks of the males who eat plenty pork on the island. If you are not too infatuated with large sized (obese) females, take a look at the ones who love the pudding and souse and roast pork, tell me what they look like to you, that is assuming you are not enchanted by that sort of size.

  43. And even closer to your neck of the woods in the US, GP, those MacDonald’s hamburger garbage eaters all look like unhealthy hamburgers, so much so that they have the balls to want to sue McDonald’s for their obese look, see, you are what you eat.

  44. Man GP why you does always have to go and destroy Bushie like that?
    OK touché!

Like most other things, the global food business has been taken over by scags and gully wags. names like Monsano, Dow and Du Pont have become legends in their own time in this regard.
these are NOT ordinary crooks. They are BIG!
    They own the FDA
    They own the US Congress
    They own the presidency…
    …these &@?/)(ers own the world.

Food is now about PROFITS…and the nutritional and other benefits are just incedental to the matter.

Even where CLEAR evidence exists of long term danger in consuming certain products, the financial realities dictate that health is secondary to profits.

In such a scenario, anyone who does not take a PERSONAL interest in what they eat is crazy….and will pay the price.

Even if this was not the case, our bodies operate in such a complex physical, chemical, electrical and mechanical interaction of mechanisms, that the proper maintenance of the right balance of minerals, vitamins, metals, liquids and air HAS TO BE a matter of CRITICAL importance to the optimum functioning of such complex systems.

However you look at it therefore, what we CHOOSE to ingest into our bodies MUST be of fundamental importance; and MUST influence the way in which our bodies function physically, mentally, socially and spiritually…
…only seem like basic common sense to a bushman… 🙂

Well Well.to explain “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT” is a term paper topic in my Nutrition course. Nearly all the students go down the line you followed re obesity and fast food. I usually send them back to go do the assignment properly. I was hoping that you would give me a better answer.

I thank you both for your answers as you have proved my hypothesis

  47. @ GP
Bushie was going to recommend that you try some Mary J to explore the spiritual, psychological and emotional implications of what we ingest on our bodies….but on second thought perhaps you are already there ….if you need to be provided ‘facts’ to assert that different aspects of our being ARE affected by what we eat/ drink/ inhale etc….

MILLER you are not talking to one of your friends in the rum shop Sir
Your answer reflects your ignorance of basic physiology
    .
I don’t think about where the brain and heart (blood pump) get electrical charges from I KNOW ! It has to do simply with passage of sodium into cells and potassium out of cells. Easy so! Just remember HIKIN’: There is a HIgh K concentration INside the cell. From this can deduce that the Na/K pump pumps K into cell and Na out of cell. Alternatively: When I was learning this pump (circa 1992), a band that was “in” was Kris Kross, and a band that was “out” was “Sha Na Na Na”: So pump moves K K (2 K) in and Na Na Na(3 Na) out.

    You don’t know squat!
    Passage of sodium into cells?!?
    Easy so?!?

Skippa, this a complex mechanism which essentially means that the heart acts as a battery, Wuh um is only even possible because of the yet unexplained role of a protein called calmodulin which provides the channels for the passage of your sodium and potassium.

But why show off on BU how easy it is to access such information?
All we REALLY need to know is that the human body is a miracle and that one has to be VERY thoughtful of what one adds to the mix of ingredients.

    @ Sargeant
You know that you are not making any sense right?!
You have no idea what Bushie selects from his frequent buffets.
You have no idea of the state of Bushie’s health, or wealth or state of happiness….
It makes no sense to join with GP and criticize the www because it have a lot of brass bowls on it… THERE ARE MULTITUDES of brass bowls all over….but interspersed among them are some GEMS…..

The more brass bowls you can access, the more gems you are able to find…..if you know what to look for….

    Bottom line:
One should be conscious and careful of what one CHOOSES to eat, drink and use…. You are thereby making your bed, in which you must lie for the rest of your life.

  56. On a previous blog posted by the Barbados Underground, Regal Farm Establish a Fish Farm in Barbados, The Twistorian (poster) on 08/07/2013 at 6:55pm posted said statement “Bajans will eat just about anything, need I remind you we love chicken feet, necks and the oil cup? Need I remind you we ear pigs tail, feet, snout, skin and its ears? Need I remind you we eat cows liver, tail and tongue?

Although no longer abundant in the region due to over fishing and pollution, Barbados culture still embraces the flying fish. Oh and shame the green monkey in Barbados did you know likes the dunk. They also like fruits, nuts, grass and seeds but when food is short, they eat anything, have to: bird eggs, birds, mice, lizzars and some insects.

    http://saflights.hubpages.com/hub/Facts-about-the-Barbados-Green-Monkey
The green monkey it seems aren’t the only ones forced to face food shortage in Barbados. Dr. David Eastwick is apparently concerned that there will be a food shortage and recommended increasing agriculture because the food bill is NOW out of control. Bajans if not already consuming these foods ultimately will due to a forthcoming food shortage.
    http://david.strongcommunication.com/news/2012/dr-estwick-food-import-bill-too-high

    http://www.cnweeklynews.com/component/content/article/3845
The United States Food and Drug Administration does not want cat/dog food from China. Barbados may want it, may gladly accept it, that and fish from this Regal Fish Farm. Country is broke “all in the red”. A food shortage is on the way, government can no longer afford its out of control food bill. USDA may not be 100% perfect but make effort when and where it can. Of course no one will dispute that assertion but yuh gotta be careful about jumping on bandwagons to support some spurious claims.

It looks like the analogy about the buffet spread flew right past yuh head (or yuh choose to ignore it because it would prove my point about picking and choosing the good from the bad).
