Adrian Loveridge - Owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel
Adrian Loveridge – Owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel

Once leaving August behind, we enter what is traditionally the most challenging period in tourism terms. Historically, the month that experiences the least number of arrivals of the year is September. September 2012 recorded just 27,230 long stay visitor arrivals, the lowest number in any month for the past ten years. A decline of 6.6 per cent over the same period in 2011. Given our already dramatically reduced airlift, with an average of just 907 passengers per day, it will result in flying hundreds of empty airline seats daily, or in fact thousands, by month end. Once the plane has taken off, clearly these seats cannot be sold twice the next day.

From an accommodation perspective, even if all these 27,230 persons stayed in a licensed hotel and the average stay was 7 nights with two per room, that still only fills less than 2,000 rooms against a total that is often quoted of between 5,000 and 6,000. This of course, does not take into account all the apartments, villas. condominiums and any unregistered accommodation providers. It also helps explain why several hotels and restaurants decide to close during September for annual holidays, refurbishment or simply to curtail operational costs. September, perhaps would have been the most logical month to roll-out the proposed APD Voucher but this could have only possibly influenced one main market, the United Kingdom.

As I have to submit this column a few days before publication perhaps details of the voucher conditions will be announced in the interim. So should the industry simply lay down and accept the current trend of falling visitor numbers? Under the current fiscal challenges we cannot afford to, it becomes an imperative to look for other creative ways to achieve a positive difference.

From 7September until 14November, American Airlines through their loyalty programme, AAdvantage has reduced the mileage requirement to 25,000 miles from any point they currently serve in the Continental United States and Canada to/from Barbados. With over 66 million members, it’s a huge untapped market for us. When American merges with US Airways ten of millions more people will have the means to reach us, from many more connecting cities.

Now look at it from a potential visitors perspective. If I wanted to fly from Los Angeles to Barbados, the lowest bookable return fare online is US$1017 for travel in September. Using miles, it’s only US$59.70. This breaks down the huge geographical airfare cost differential and opens up what are considered far-flung price deterrent source markets. How do we reach this massive group of travel ready people? The simple answer is to smart partner with the airline and use their existing channels of communicating with frequent flyer customers, electronically. The destination could also purchase additional miles to further lower the travel threshold and make it almost irresistible.

Already some private sector partners are offering triple miles over this period to maximise opportunities for every part of the sector. Timing is critical, and in this industry there is no longer the luxury for procrastination in decision making. Not that there ever was but we seem to have grown accustomed to apathy and a lack of lucidity. Let us collectively make it the best performing September in eleven years, rather than set yet another record of failure.

  1. Many years ago (80s 90s ) it used to be known when the peak time for tourism in Barbados was taking place.

You only had to be in Bridgetown, Holetown, etc, during the day to see so many tourists from various countries shopping in the duty free and souvenir shops, taking taxis from the , dining in the restaurants, mingling with the locals on the streets, buying craft, water coconuts, sno-cones from the outdoor business people, taking pictures of the many attractions, etc. to realize that it was that time (again).

Nowadays you hear about the same peak periods but there is not seen daily in Bridgetown as many tourists taking part in the aforesaid and other relevant activities as much as in the said 80s 90s.

Indeed, contrasting these different peak times in tourism over the years – via looking at the extent of their participation in those types of activities – is one way of unofficially measuring for and proving the long term decline that has been taking place in the tourism sector of Barbados.

In the fifth line from the top of the above PDC post, it should have been written as ‘taking taxis from the taxi-stands’.

  3. Hi Adrian,

One issue with the AA miles thing is that the same applies to all destinations (the reduction in mileage needed to get to various destinations). So I don’t think that will be a big draw for the island.

Also, how exactly or what program are you thinking of to specifically go after these persons. Every destination can advertise in their magazines and flyers etc (of the airline). But I am a member of AAdvantage and I don’t get direct offers from them to spend miles – I would think it is because it is a real cost to AA (when people use miles) so they don’t push the spending of miles.

But I am interested to know what vehicle or how you would go after these potential travellers. What type of campaign?

What I think we need is marketing of the island that is so badly missing in the marketplace – to all persons from key markets that have airlift already in place in the US / Canada and the UK. We have a Minister and the head of the BTA who have taken these matters on themselves and have not performed well so far in their marketing initiatives.

    Travel,

I receive any least three emails each month from AA AAdvantage including my mileage statement and usually several offers that give increased mileage on certain routes/hotels/car rental etc.
That’s the way I would try initially and then smart partner with one of the affinity credit cards to offer double or triple miles, when using that card to pay for the hotel/accommodation, car rental, restaurants etc. As I mentioned, the destination (Barbados) could also buy MILES to lower the already lower requirement to reach us.

St Lucia opposition challenges ALBA membership
    By Caribbean News Now contributor

CASTRIES, St Lucia — The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) in Saint Lucia has challenged the country’s recent decision to join ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America). Saint Lucia became a full member during the 12th ALBA presidential summit, which took place in Ecuador on July 30, 2013.

The newly elected UWP leader, Allen Chastanet, referred to “potential fall-out” of ALBA membership, not just with respect to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), but also the UK and the US.

Chastanet expressed concern as to the proposed use of the SUCRE as the trading currency of ALBA countries, and the implications for the Eastern Caribbean Monetary Union (ECMU).

“In other words, does St Lucia plan to leave the ECMU and abandon the Eastern Caribbean dollar? Does St Lucia’s accession to ALBA now put us in conflict with the pro-Argentina position on the Falklands Islands and could have serious repercussions for our foreign policy standing with the United Kingdom. Similarly, the clear anti-USAID stance of ALBA may undermine our longstanding relationships with the USA,” he said.

Another amazing decision by Government. The Antigua Observer is reporting that one of the new ATR72-600 aircraft operated by LIAT whose single largest shareholder is Barbados is being used to ferry around the President of a country that the Government does not recognise. Meanwhile hundreds of taxpaying passengers who guaranteed the aircraft loans have been left abandoned around the Caribbean. I wonder if the People’s Republic of China will still help finance the recover of tourism on Barbados and especially with the refurbishment and re-building of Almond Beach Village (our largest hotel) and Silver Sands Resort?

  7. Here is the link to that amazing story. Could it be that Barbados is not aware that this decision was made?

  8. @Adrian and David
Didn’t the goerrnment already announce that China will help with the purchase and refurbishment of Almond Beach Village?

  10. The Napa Valley one of the premier wine regions in the world is associated with Northern California (United States), creole cruisine, New Orleans, Louisiana (United States), but Barbados the flying fish and black belly sheep. Barbados history, however is deepest in sugar cane cultivation. There are now less sugar cane plantations in Barbados as Barbados is now more dependent on its tourism industry than sugar cultivation. Neither of the two, the Barbados economy or its tourism industry are at moment seen in good health. Barbados perhaps should return to its roots in cultivating more sugar also citrus fruits. Both are products, sugar and citrus fruits are products in demand domestic and abroad. Both, the sugar cane plant and citrus fruits grow only in subtropical and tropical climates. Barbados may still have its tourism industry but needs another or other things to sustain itself. Detroit, Michigan (United States) is associated with the automobile industry. Detroit still produces automobiles, now bicycles and watches. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/06/shinola-detroit-store-bikes-watches_n_3544473.html

    David,
How could Barbados NOT be aware of this decision. LIAT’s Commercial Office and Chairman are both based in Barbados and I cannot imagine it could be done without senior management involvement.

    Alvin,
I think the People’s Republic of China have been known to change their minds. They consider Taiwan to be a renegade province, so what does that make it’s President.

Unbelievable and I wonder if we will hear from the PM or Minister of Foreign Affairs. All that taxpayer monies spent to establish a Barbados Embassy in China and foster Chinese tourism growth to here.

  12. @Adrian

  14. About Taiwan, the Republic of China, I think that we are being fed the wrong information. It is in fact Taiwan that is claiming responsibility over mainland China and not the other way around. The People’s Republic of China broke away from the Republic of China and now only Taiwan forms the Republic of China.

What does the Taiwanese President’s visit to Caricom countries have to do with China’s (not Taiwan) agreement to assist the Barbadeos Government in its purchase of Almond/ Taiwan has ties with a number of
Caricom socountries especially in the area of fishing. Barbados recognizes the government of ChinaThe Gymnasium was built by the Government of China not Taiwan, and we have always had good relations with that country. What are you and Adrian trying to suggest/ Taiwan has always been considered a renegade state of China from the time

  19. (Continued) of the Kwomintang and the flight of General Chiang Kei sheck from the mainland to Taiwan, when Mao Tsei tung took over China. The Government of Barbados supports China over Taiwan. A wise choice.

  20. i agree with look.-barbados needs something else to back it self up with.
sugarcane was the main staple when i was a child, then slowly in the 1960
this tourism started, mini mokes, hotels, but not huge hotels it was
more real and fit into barbados more conformable.
what has happened is that there too many hotels now and barbados has seemed to gone crazy with this tourism thing .hotels and villas every where
there is no way to fill all these rooms.the government of barbados should have watched this all along and not allowed so many hotels to be built.
hence the problem.how can we expect to fill all these rooms as there other tropical islands barbados is not the only one.
Barbados has moved forward to fast and now put the cart before the horse.
in every way not just hotels and tours and souvenirs,Everything!!!!!!!!!
now we have abandoned hotels and new ones being built next to them,.
    what sense does that make???????????
to much too soon for our little barbados causing barbados to become a concrete jungle just as where the visitor comes from.
    >———also in America the black on white crime is unbelievable and triple or more as white on black crime, rape, killings,by blacks against whites .
would you in view of this. which is in the news quite often now pick to go to a country full of the people that rob and rape and kill in your own hometown .black people
USA,England,Europe,canada..[apparently these people know more about barbados than Barbadians]
    to much too soon.
it is obvious this would happen.
so some other product from barbados, cement, rum, sugar, limestone,
    what else?
every one and their brother got a tour of some sort.
    too many.
    what else can barbados produce?
sell our land ! most bajans do not like this idea.but the government continues to sell land to make money to stay afloat.
why have you bajans let these foreigners influence you to concrete jungle your island home and turn it into a commercial zone.
why? because they are allowed to !!!!!!!!!!!
i remember when tourist were few and the island was a happier place.
now all is stress, traffic, all kinds of stupid ideas that do not work.
my suggestion to all bajans is to step back and look at where they are.
why do you want to be like commercialized.it is not bajan style to be rushing all around so we can pay bills caused by the sky rocketed cost of land[ by millionaire foreigners]
i say to hell with them.
can we not get back to our normal little island ways.it was good enough before.
do we need all this hustle and bustle.
    in this heat to besides.
think people do you want a concrete jungle because some foreigners want to retire or live their life style in our little island.
for the love of Christ, who needs a i phone in barbados?
    who needs 100.000 cars?
you have all been tricked and led like sheep to the machine.
the machine that will destroy our slow, cool way of life.
no!!!!!!!!!! we must rush around with a big car and do lots of work to pay for this and that.
where can you press out a Porsche in barbados???????
    huh?
    why all this materialism.
    do we need it,?
    do we?
OK here is a hint for one export .it has been proven that sour-sop leaves boiled as tea is a proven cure for cancer/.it is all over the internet in ground up bottles or pills.
    do we sell this?no
    but we could.
there are many things we can sell other than our history and land.and our pride to the wicked of this world.
    hemp clothing and paper, huh?
    barbados spring water?huh
i know we got natural freshwater springs.huh?
how have we come so far so fast?
ever wonder how? and who needs it?
there are some clues for you all.
Now tourist robing souvenir vendors now.
some of the tourist worst than the bajan thief and criminal.watch them closely.have a nice day. and slow down, where are you going,?
    one day closer to death??

  21. can you see it barbados as it was.no flashy crap, wicked evil foreign bastards.
wanting our land and ruining our life style .huh
    why???????????????????????????????????????????????????

The revelation that the US has decided to “disallow” participation by police officers from Saint Lucia in US-organised training programmes

Did this ever happen to any Caribbean state even crime ridden Jamaica or Dominican Rep?
St. Lucia as a relatively new tourist spot gets millions of dollars in free word of mouth promotion from the Barbados Labour Party and its supporters. Nothing intrinsically wrong with bigging up our neighbor but the BLP goes out its way to pull down Barbados in the process. Only the ubiquitous epitome of misery Adrian Loveridge trumps the BLP in the quest to destroy the land of the flying fish.
Indeed the BLP and its supporters plainly tell the world that tourists should by pass Barbados and go the St. lucia. These same disloyal traitors then question why tourists are not coming in the numbers as before. Prodigal, miller, the blog owner, island gal et al literally say out loud Barbados is not worth a visit. If these so called intelligent Barbadians who benefitted from DLP Barrow’s free education can give the thumbs down to their own country what do you expect a curious tourist to do? The BLP is responsible for the flight of capital and tourists with its constant degrading of our beautiful island. Pele Bradshaw’s daughter spent her half hour on national tv urging tourists to go St. Lucia. Mara Thompson a native St. Lucian spent her half hour urging Barbadians to unite for the good of Barbados. Oh the irony.
In the meanwhile the all powerful USA bans all police in St. Lucia including the Commissioner of Police from entering USA. You don’t have to be Einstein to guess why senior St. Lucian police and politicians are denied USA visas that island is an emerging hotbed of crime and corruption.
Kofi Annan opined Barbados always punches above its weight. He knows the greatness of our island. Its time the disloyal turn their backs on the political expediency that’s hurting the country. Time for Bajans of every stripe to come back to our core values pride and industry and of love and commitment to the gem of the Caribbean.

  23. @Alvin

Why don’t you take a deep breath and understand the point being made. Barbados s a majority owner in an airline called LIAT. That airline based on the link to the Antigua Observer has used a plane as a charter to ferry a Taiwanese delegation. The question s being asked whether this s a smart move given Chinese bilateral relationship with Barbados.

    Well said.

The object of the Barbados Labour Party and its members and supporters is make Barbados ungovernable. They are going out of their way to ensure that chaos reigns in Barbados and they are leaving no stone unturned in an effort to achieve their evil goals. The writer is all part of this nefarious plot.

So getting as many tourists to visit St. Lucia and by pass Barbados is a wonderful idea for these wicked Barbados Labour Party people. The resulting economic damage which results to their country Barbados is exactly what they are hoping to achieve. It really has nothing to do with any love of St. Lucia it has all to do with causing destabilization of the Island of Barbados.

Remember that this same Barbados Labour Party was responsible for the locking up of Kenny Anthony’s wife a few years ago when she was a protestors at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.

Plan to Convert Roads to Gravel Begins Despite Pushback

    by Ian Floyd

    August 19, 2013

“………The sharp increase in heavy traffic from a historic oil boom has damaged many farm-to-market roads in South and East Texas. The damage related to energy development has become so extensive that state and local authorities lack the funding to make all the repairs. Last month, the Texas Department of Transportation announced plans to convert more than 80 miles of paved roads to gravel. The conversions are expected to start Monday, TxDOT officials said. But the plan has been met with criticism from lawmakers and some of the farmers and ranchers who live near those roads.

“Since paving roads is too expensive and there is not enough funding to repave them all, our only other option to make them safer is to turn them into gravel roads,” TxDOT spokesman David Glessner said.

Dimmit County, near the Texas-Mexico border, will be hit hardest by TxDOT’s decision. More than 30 miles of the county’s farm-to-market roads are slated to be turned to gravel.”

    http://www.texastribune.org/2013/08/19/conversion-of-roads-to-gravel-met-with-concern/

This is happening all over the great USA. Lack of funds, lack of funds, lack of funds but the Barbados Labour Party and its minions wants everyone to believe that Barbados is the only place on Earth with a few problems.

Can anyone tell me where in Barbados the government is deliberately turning paved roads into rubble?

However if the Barbados Labour Party continues on its crusade to assist St. Lucia with its Tourism marketing plan to the detriment of Barbados’ Tourism product and the resulting economic damage which will result, who knows when we might have to start turning our roads to rubble with the complements of the Barbados Labour Party and the article writer!

    ..

  26. one thing that make great countries strong is a thread of unity that binds its citizens together with it comes a sense of patriotism and a sense of pride . i have never heard an american stand in the way of progress when it comes to making their country better ,i have never heard an american say that another country is in any way better than america,
yes indeed i have heard americans criticise the policies of their govts, but never seen or heard an american put another countries interest over the interest of america, however here in this little country of ours it seems that degrading barbados and putting other countries interst ahead of barbados is being worn with a badge of honour,

  30. Criticising what is wrong with the Barbados tourism product and seeking ways to improve it is the opposite of disloyalty. We can work together to improve it, or we can silence the critics and just sit back satisfied that all is well. Heads in the sand. The point that has repeatedly been made is that while some in Barbados blame the international economy for the fall-off in tourism here, it doesn’t seem to be having the same effect on St Lucia. Perhaps the head-in-the-sanders can explain that.

  32. The leasing of a LIAT plane to the Taiwan president leaving citizens of the shareholder countries stranded is an atrocity. One suspects this criminal behavior can be laid at the foot of Ralph Gonzalves the self appointed czar of LIAT. The fat bastard with the least shares in LIAT throws his lard like weight around. With rouge state Taiwan footing the bill for St. Vincent’s new airport Gonzalves no doubt is kissing the President’s ass and providing scarce LIAT assets to the detriment of LIAT’s customers and customer service

Neither Barbados nor Antigua recognize the illegal country of Taiwan. St. Vincent is one of the handful of countries in the world that recognizes Taiwan. There is only one China that’s the Peoples Republic of China (PRC).

LIAT shareholder governments have to be wary of Gonzalves whose only interest is Gonzalves. Ask any of the numerous women who have accused him of rape and sexual assault.

I’m Dominican and Gonzalves persuade a gullible Dominica government not to build an international airport. He then immediately went around the world begging outlaw states like Taiwan and Libya for money to build an international airport in St. Vincent.

Barbados and Antigua must put their foot down when dealing with Gonzalves. The man is not to be trusted.
