Environs of Bs Recycling
Environs of Bs Recycling

The tragic event which occurred at B’s Recycling located at Cane Garden, St. Thomas yesterday has tossed up several issues. According to a recent press report surveillance cameras recorded two characters running from the vicinity of the metal dump. In their haste they left a wheel barrow and spade behind. If it is that this fire was caused by thieves, it adds to a growing belief at home and abroad that the crime situation has started to wobble out of control.  For those who do not yet have an appreciation of the situation, it was reported today that   “British MP Stephen McPartland has called on the Foreign Office to warn travellers that Barbados is “not a safe place” until the local police properly investigate the rape of two British women”.

Then there is the issue of whether a business of this type should be located in a large residential area with a newly built school – Lester Vaughn – downstream. Barbados is a 21 by 14 island and common sense says there is no perfect location in Barbados. However we need to have a national policy regarding this type of business and the safeguards necessary to operate. Are we sensitive about matters to do with the environment anyway?

What is next for the Bynoe’s and Bs Recycling?

That fire from my lil understanding barely burn of some stock pile of miscellaenous ‘barney rubbles’…..Do you have the feeling that the operations ( which is very diversed in exporting recycle-ables) has been seriuosly impaired? Mabe another trade-able in stocks or land-able might be in the air for a gigantic pig tail fiasco lowly outlet…

  4. Isn’t Bs operating at the site without T&P approval? Didn’t this matter knock dog on the political platform? How will the authorities react post black smoke?

It’s all a matter of timing……when batting and watchin the ball (Carson)..sometimes it appears as big as a breadfruit…..But I aint no cricketer so David I go leave that one….like Hants …. is fishing for me

  6. Hindsight is 20/20 but….
Going forward we need a D(Prevention)M as much as a DEM.

The Plant should have its own fire prevention program.Easier said than done but I am saying it anyway.

Then there is the issue of location but Barbados is only 166 sq.miles.

  7. The damn place gone to the dogs.
    Nothing is done proactively….
Nobody EVER looks ahead and applies a stitch in time…

When we have reached the stage where Glyne Julian Williams-Hunte can be one of the sanest voices heard in public, we must be near the end….

Tell Bushie how the hell you can have vagabonds stealing wire, burning off the insulation in public places (wid nuff smoke) , and then selling the metal to the same metal dealers….and they are not suspicious?
    ….the police can’t catch a boy…?
…and even if one is caught, some semi literate judge will give him a suspended sentence, or a fine which causes him to steal even more to pay that fine….

    No doubt…
After the fire we will see all kinds of ‘solutions’…
After the tourist are raped suspects come out of the woodwork like ants…
After the tourist are shot, suddenly the cops can find a prisoner who “escaped” from a police station, ….and committed numerous crimes.

…which police officer was disciplined for that “escape”..?
…does this suspect have a “cousin” in the ‘Force’?
…when will a real leader be appointed commissioner?

    But then again….
A mother takes extreme steps to prevent her teenage daughter from completely destroying her own future….and seems to have succeeded….
….and a hoard of BU “non-ceramic bowls” gets on her case and calls for her head…..
…apparently she should have waited until the girl formed a gang and became a national bandit …..so that the same BU hoard could curse the same mother for not raising the girl effectively… Smh

GP, man you like you on to something yuh…..

  8. Everyone in Barbados agrees that recycling is desirable and is the way to go. However, nobody wants the ugly spectacle of a recycling plant in their neighbourhood. For that reason in 1986 when the new administration discovered that the proposed site for the dump at Mangrove Pond in St. Thomas would have been unsuitable for the purpose; they went ahead anyway. It was unsuitable because of its proximity to the aquifer at Molyneux. The Government had a 24 to 3 majority and none of the victorious 24 wanted a dump in their constituency. The only places for a dump were therefore St. Peter, Christ West and St. Thomas. St. Thomas was chosen and as a result 12% of the daily water supply was polluted.

…otherwise he will reach the next stage- where his murder may be justifiable….

  12. “Then there is the issue of whether a business of this type should be located in a large residential area……!”
It matters not who owns/bought or wants to set up a business, an Environmental Impact Assessment should firstly be carried out, by an ‘Independent Assessor’, looking at all aspects of the project(s).
Those who reside around the area should be informed and a meeting or a series of meetings should be planned, which should include the Town Planning Board.
If the above was the norm, incidents or accidents of this type could be minimized/ avoided.
This is a very populated Island and one should be mindful of the fact that an incidents/accidents could have an impact on some people.
Often when decisions of this type are made, the interest of residents are not placed at the forefront.

“After the tourist are shot, suddenly the cops can find a prisoner who “escaped” from a police station, ….and committed numerous crimes.”

i do not understand the logic of the Commissioner of Police seeking to give bajans a false sense of security and this has been going on for a while. i know that this guy was caught and while he was in prison, this crime was committed so i was wandering how the police could still bring a charge against him but they have now come up with a fantastic statement, he escaped from a police station.

the British must think that this country is full of retards. what will happen when tourists continue to be rob in like manner when the alleged criminal is in prison?

I am somehow please that all this negativity is now surrounding Barbados because for too long we have been putting plaster on serious wounds, the police force cannot and have never solved any crimes with just evidence, they ALWAYS beat confessions out of people and many people have been sent to prison based on a confession, while the real criminals have continued to do as they like or until they end up in prison too. the issue with the metal dump, i only wished that the entire structure had burnt because it is in a residential area, a school where children have recently been coming down with similar illnesses, i would like that if the owner continues to break the law and rebuilds there, that it is destroyed again.

  16. Barbados is not doing well. We are not doing well at all. And it is worst than you think. Some of us do not live close enough to what is going on and we believe that this is the Barbados of 40 , 50 years ago. The performance of the Barbados Cricket Team is a reflection of Barbadian Society.. There are so many ignorant people out there: ignorant of fundamental things.

Who knows, maybe after the perpetrators are caught, since it’s not their 16th time commiting a crime, they will only spend three years in jail. Maybe,it will classify as praedial larceny and the video surveillance will be ruled inadmissable.Definitely, we know they will not be charged with the true cost of the environmental damage that this country has sustained, but rather, with the petty misdemeanour of stealing a little copper from a dump.

  19. Every opportunity I get, I plan to promote my Intellectual Property patents that my government spent 250,000 dollars to assist my company to secure 17 patents and patents pending in 2003.

While for 9 years, barring the diligence of one specific agency whose name I cant mention because they might find themselves part of the “persona non grata” group I lead, they have not sought to capitalize on any of the IP, notwithstanding continuous attempts to work with these agencies that talk alot about innovation and invention.

One of the IP products is a “vulcan blanket” a pretty name for “a system and apparatus to suppress (wild) fires which threaten places of domicile, wildlife, arid and non-arid) lands etc,…”.

Maybe someone at the ministry responsible for the various recycling plant, garbage dump and places where there is the storage of highly combustible material, material that can spontaneously combust (or some place that is hybrid of the above venues) might think that we should have a “proactive” fire prevention system in place at these “infernos-in-waiting”.

Advertising complete, now to a suggestion.

About 5 years ago I approached the Ministry of Education with a project which sought to utilize the fertile minds of our school children under a “reduction-to-practice” initiative that for the most part sought to make the curriculum of (science) students pertinent and applicable.

Synopsis of the Program for Innovation and Invention (P.I.I)

Have science students, guided by (i) science teachers, (ii) augmented by staff and students from the University of the West Indies Department of Pure and Applied Sciences and (iii) appropriate personnel secured through TAs from governments e.g. UNIDO agencies with whom we have bilateral agreements and environmental resources take tyres, and glass, and as part of MoE endorsed programme work on reconstituting said materials into a road surfacing alternative.

This is not rocket science it was done on New York roads..

What I was suggesting then, and again now, was/is a programme which would

    (i) seek to engage the minds of our science students (and their schools) to research and submit “real world” national Science and Technology projects
(ii) utilize this captive brain power pool to produce alternative substitutes for resilient road materials

P.I.I (its Alternative Surfacing Substitute) would be structured using appropriate pedagogical constructs and, if successful, would not only re-employ seemingly indestructible tyres and glass, but show how in this Small Island Developing State our education system could deploy practicums which presented working solutions for Barbados

I suggested then that under P.I.I “school clusters” could have been formed where, for example, Queens College, Harrison College and Combermere would as part of Cluster A, work in conjunction with Rayside Construction in Green Hill to develop, test and deploy, varying samples of road surfacing substitutes to use where their truck enter the road on Green Hill. You know, the section which is now all sunken down just like the stretch out by Williams’ place out in Canewood.

Surely, under the watchful eye of MTW and the relevant ministries, Environment, Education Health etc., we could challenge these students to developing a project where we congealed hot melt tires, with silica/glass , post removing the steel, to deplete tires in the dump but more importantly as an alternative to importing some portion of the materials that we use on our roads.

I accept that we would not possibly have all the materials, tyres or glass, to sustain a national road surfacing programme.

But that is not the point of P.I.I. What it seeks to do is promote innovation and orient the minds of this (restless) student population towards the possibilities of what they can do, giving chemistry a new perspective, incorporating Whiteboards, the rugged Edutech laptops and tablets networked between Grantley Adams, Princess Margret and Lodge.

P.I.I would mean real-time access/collaboration between schools with labs and those without in our effort to deploy a new modus to engage our school children.

Of course, since this suggestion (which the MoE endorsed in 2009) is coming from yours truly I expect that it, or any variation of the idea, will not see the light of day.

Even though there may be benefit for Miss Blackman’s son from Marl Hole, that 14 year old who, irrespective of his humble dwellings, shows aptitude in Chemistry, rest assured that as long as Weekes suggests this P.I.I thing, it, even if it was the cure for cancer, will not be adopted and Blackman will never get to use the EDUTECH infrastructure as it should be used.

Our country does not care if ** Blackman might possibly excell if his SBA was fashioned around a purpose built practicum?

Again i would extend this challenge to the powers that be, Weekes soon will pass away, look at what is in the message

  20. A very sad and potentially hazardous environmental situation. Hope the authorities move swiftly enough to minimise likely effects.

I am happy though , that the investigative team , have on surveillance cameras Miller and Caswell running away from the scene .

  22. BU likes to think from the rubble or in this case ashes something good may come out of it all. We are too slapdash when it comes to governance and good management practices. Another thing is that politics must permeate everything we do or say. It shows an immaturity which we still have to overcome.

  23. @ smooth chocolate, i was saying the same thing, how convenient for the police, do they really think that people are foolish, maybe the reason the chap had a ‘screw face’ was the fact that he didn’t commit all the offences. It is a nasty practice employed by those who should know better, catch a man for something, and when he gone court, he being charged for all sorts of things that they know not about. I’m not saying that the guy is a saint if he committed a crime he should pay for it, and only the one(s) that he committed. We all know how the police does do it bout hay.

Talking bout crime and punishment, ….is Bushie the only one pissed by the published comments of the DPP recently with respect to the case of the fellow who shot and killed a man in st George in accepting a plea of manslaughter?
…the DPP is reported to have said that the killer may have been “provoked” by an unfair trial in our courts…..!!?!
    WTF. (What the France…)
….apparently the killer had a case against this man for wounding but was tricked into having the case dismissed when he was not in attendance (not having been notified of the date), and therefore was “provoke”d into killing the man.
…..you feel the DPP smoking something too?
..Bushie feels that he is the drummer in the band “Brass Souls”….

    What does this say about:

    – our lawyers

The original dump, the one dubbed Mt. Stinkeroo by David Simmons, was not a sanitary landfill. They just dumped garbage in a hole in the ground which used to be a massive pond (hence the name Mangrove Pond) when it rained. Depending on the amount of rain that pond would take weeks to dry out. That cell was not lined with impervious material like they do now and the leachate found itself in the aquifer at Molyneux.

For a while the BWA was pumping that contaminated brew and talking crap about some international standard in parts per million until they could actually smell the leachate in the water and finally abandoned the well. Molyneux will not be a source of potable water in my lifetime or the lifetime of my grandchildren. This is as a result of stupid politicians getting involved in technical areas way outside their level of competence.

By the way, we shall soon see a disproportionate rise in the level of cancer in the people who were serviced by that well because of the dioxin that they drinking. I challenge anyone at the BWA to deny anything that I have said.

“I am happy though , that the investigative team , have on surveillance cameras Miller and Caswell running away from the scene.”

Whom you saw running away from the scene was not the miller or his side kick Caswell posing as OSA of similar height but Sinliar the musty gorilla and his sickly ready-to-die sidekick denis the menace lowe down in the dumps arranging like a true Ferringi for his 5 &10% kickback on the copper wire heist.

Why don’t you leave the miller alone or are you afraid of his ‘perspicacious perspicuity’ and knack to observe the god of retribution at work?

It was only last week during the debates that Sinckliar the sweaty buffoon accused OSA of closing the Molyneux well for personal gain and promoting the business interests of his friends. Now we know the polluting reasons going back to 1986.

The virgin Greenland dump in which ‘not even a toffee paper is buried’ is ripe and ready for the taking. You can always use the recent environmental fiasco as the cloak or smoking gun to make Greenland the Garden of Eden where the three R’s of the Environment have real basic economic meaning.
Try viewing the Greenland dump as less of a threat to the West Coast villas and hotel plant. After all it can be a real opportunity to get rid of Hats since hundreds of jobs in our new green economy can be found for the people of that Parish.

Those who tell lies as a profession like Sinckliar must always be armed with the sword of consistency.
Big Bin is Little Cyprus in the making. Now pick sense from that, if you can to do a humpty-dumpty to your fractured brain.

That’s a very serious charge which suggests that our entire yellow “Gold Coast’ will soon turn “black” as the spectre of the Big “C” raises its ugly head bringing haunting memories of the Cholera ground in that same area. Research into the incidence of cancer among the people living in the possible affected area especially certain cancers could be most revealing.

Maybe OSA had a vision of things to come and deliberately earmarked Greenland as a fitting dump for the number of contaminated bodies soon to be handled like the black death of mid 15th Century Europe.

Our environmental chickens are now coming home to roost and with our economic and social woes are making the perfect cocktail of deadly leachate for further social dysfunction and degradation of the people’s health.
It is always confusing to comprehend how a so-called educated health-conscious people overpopulated with doctors can feel comfortably healthy when their major source of vital water is from underground pools into which most of the industrial and domestic chemicals and personal waste find a deadly home.

One wonders what the situation would had been like today had the Glendairy Prisons not been purposely put into an inactive state of pollution of the Belle water zone.

I would advise any young UWI graduate to get in the undertaker’s deadly business where a job is for a profitably long lifetime.

  35. The rot at the top of the BPF started from the days of Durant. There were at least half a dozen competent officers who were in line for promotion ahead of him.

“A commissioner in Barbados should be an officer who worked his way up the ranks and who over the years takes the opportunity to learn management practices for a Police force.”

A most welcome ideal. But given the current state of the force where every promotional and career advancing decision is based on incestuous political association whether he or she is a Bee or a Dem it would be best for the local force at this juncture in its development be headed by an outsider preferably from Canada or a black senior officer from the London Met.
At least for the next 5-10 years until the local men and women sworn to protect and serve the nation and not any political party get themselves out of the yellow/blue and red stripes and back into real neutral colours befitting of the legacy left by a Farmer or a Prescod or even a Phillips.

“Where in Barbados should a recycling plant be located?
Where in Barbados should a garbage dump be located?”

There are more questions than answers to that NIMBY dilemma.
Given the government’s much talked about policy of “greening” the economy then a place that most sums up this lofty goal by its name alone should be revisited but with greater emphasis on the three ‘Rs” before the refuse is buried in this expensive receptacle for Bajans’ profligate and unsustainable import-based materialistic lifestyle.

We will be most supportive if the current administration would eat a bit of humble pie and revisit this location as the final resting place for future Bajan refuse.

Dennis Lowedown has a way of backing away from previous commitments like the “dumping of the WTE project based on incineration. He can do the same with the Greenland dump.
Ac would back him all the way to Isolation Village and even pay a visit to Morgan Lewis to visit his goat-‘hoading’ nickname-sake for a shot of “Caswellian” special brew to keep him steady for another year on his shaky feet of clay.

So why don’t you demand from your man of Integrity justice for those victims of the Arch Cot tragedy?
But that is not your style. What is more up your street is blaming people for this administration’s shortcomings.
So go ahead and blame OSA for this week’s environmental disaster.
So where do we go from here for the dump cum recycling plant? To the green heartland of St. Andrew? Certainly not to St. Lucy where Denis the Killer man would threaten to sit as an independent MP if foisted on the people.

  43. We have to stay focused on a logical intelligent solution to the problem.

How in 2013 can this still be a problem. The location cannot be in the centre of a 21 x 14 mile Island.Garbage dump plus rain equals poison in the ground water.

Maybe we can get it right this time. Recycling is absolutely essential on a densely populated like Barbados.Incineration (WTE) is also going to be necessary because you can’t do like Toronto and ship garbage to Michigan.

Somewhere on this planet is a country which has a tried and true system of Waste management. Our well paid brainiacs in the various Ministries can find
a solution. They need to do comprehensive research and make tough non partisan decisions.
