While scanning Facebook newsfeed a post by the OG Ken Jones of the Troubadours International piqued the blogmaster’s interest.

There isn’t much to add to Ken Jones’ post except to suggest to the CEO of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) Carol Roberts the following: there is no way a spouge concert to celebrate the late great Jackie Opel should be staged in Barbados by the NCF and the Troubadours International band is not invited to participate. The Troubadours has been a proponent of the spouge beat through the decades and it enjoyed a close association with the late Jackie Opel.

Why are we so rh petty?

Hopefully it is not too late for relevant parties to get together to make wrong things right.

    I grew up with the Troubadours playing in the background. It made my life much more enjoyable.

    Let the petty fools keep their official recognition, if they must! They can’t take away from the excellence that was achieved. And they will never achieve what the Troubadours have.

    They put smiles on faces.

    What do we rally expect. We have people in high places commenting on our culture, who apparently don’t research anything and give credit to those according to their fondness of certain politicians.
    Anyone taking the time to go on YouTube would find enough Bajan music and yet on mornings , we getting up to country and western music along with American music.
    Can anyone imagine getting up in the USA and hearing The Merrymen or the said Troubadours? Can anyone imagine getting up in Canada and hearing Joseph Niles. But these clowns go about the place playing they are more Bajan than anybody else.
    Right now , the only highly recognized Bajan instrumental , that is played throughout the region , is that of the same Troubadours and ironically it is called : Talk
    That’s what we excel at.

    The Troubadours International promoted the ” Barbados Brand ” in Canada for many years.

    They also kept spouge music ” alive “.

    They should been playing at that concert.

    Even if the crew invited is our young group of musicians, can’t they see the benefit of having the Troubadours participate to help with knowledge exchange etc?

    this was a missed opportunity. A Jackie Opel “Tribute” concert should be headlined by the Troubadours International.

    When God gives you such an obvious struggle as the NCF CEO, one would expect she would make up for it in other areas, nope. Sad to say but with her that struggle goes right to the core.

    I’ve reduced everything in Barbados to a few words “a con”, ‘a scam’ or ‘3-card monte’.
    I was hoping that you googled ‘3 card monte ‘so that you recognize it when you see it but I must admit that I have failed.

    Realizing that everything in Barbados is geared towards putting your money in a next
    person’s pocket, you will find that folks who set out to perform a task often take the short cut. They will do just enough to have something stick on the wall, just enough to separate you from your money but not enough for someone to honestly say “good job”. In 3-car monte in, after all the shuffling, all of the huffing and puffing, after all the noise the card is never where you think it is

    This tribute to Jackie O looks like a good deed, but it is clear that the research or thinking was not complete. The good cause that you support may not be as noble as you think. Perception is NOT reality.

    FYI: “Three-card monte – also known as find the lady and three-card trick – is a confidence game in which the victims, or “marks”, are tricked into betting a sum of money, on the assumption that they can find the “money card” among three face-down playing cards.”

    I remember in the 60s when The Troubadours and The Blue Rhythm Combo were the top two bands in Barbados.

    My favorite lead guitarist was Manny Leslie.

    Opel’s daughter passes at age 62

    Rhonda “Poppy” Greaves, the daughter of father of spouge and musical genius, Jackie Opel, passed away on August 10.

    A funeral and interment will be held for Greaves tomorrow at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens and Crematorium.

    The 62-year-old woman of Barbarees Hill, St Michael, was a former general worker at Kensington Oval Management Inc.

    Back in 2022 she attended the unveiling of a mural in honour of her father, whose real name was Dalton Sinclair Bishop, where she expressed the time had come for her father to be officially honoured.
