Important info for workers in the agricultural sector and hobby farmers/gardeners/landscapers etc. who use Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer, especially those who do so on a regular basis. In light of the evidence produced in a recent US lawsuit, anyone using Roundup herbicides would be wise to exercise extreme caution. According to the jury verdict, the warnings and handling instructions issued by the manufacturer are inadequate to protect users from harm. (Note that Monsanto was recently taken over by Bayer who said they will drop the Monsanto name from products but still maintain sales of Monsanto developed agro-chemicals, GM seeds etc..)
The Media Relations personnel of the law firm of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, PC emailed me at 6:20 PM Friday, August 10th, the verdict rendered by the jury in the 8-week trial whereby “the jury found unanimously that Monsanto’s glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer caused Mr. Johnson to develop NHL, and that Monsanto failed to warn of this severe health hazard. Importantly, the jury also found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct.”

On appeal, the verdict is going to be overturned. The results of animal studies form the basis for extrapolating to the human situation. Because animal studies show carcinogenic responses, one can’t prove that human responses will be the same as those obtained from animal model systems. In any case there is the factor of dose response. In animal model systems, the test animals are exposed to very high levels of the suspected carcinogen. In fact, the levels are so high, that it would take humans several life times to reach the accumulated levels to which the test animals were exposed to. The USA Food and Drug Cosmetic Act labels any substance carcinogenic if there is any adverse effect to the suspected carcinogen. In risk analysis, there are two levels of note. The lowest observable effect level (LOEL) and the no observable effect level (NOEL). In the case of LOEL, the test chemical is assumed to be carcinogenic whether the response occurred at one part per trillion or at 20 kg. To illustrate what I am talking about. chlorine is used in potable water at 200ppm(parts per million) and there is NOEL. If however chlorine is used at 1000ppm it is carcinogenic. Normally according to the Food and Drug Cosmetic Act, Chlorine should be banned and not used for treating potable water. The social impact when taken into account predicates its use. In any event, cancers are caused by several factors. In toxicology, any substance can be termed a poison if a high enough dose is ingested (for example ingesting too much water).

Does Glyphosate Substitute for Glycine During Protein Synthesis?
If it can be proven that glyphosate substitutes by mistake for glycine during protein synthesis, it is “game over” for glyphosate. Anthony Samsel suggested to me that this might be happening in December of 2015, and we published our first paper on this idea the following March [15]. I have since published several other papers, together with colleagues, showing how this concept can elegantly explain the disease process in multiple diseases and conditions whose rate is rising alarmingly in the past two decades. These include diabetes and obesity [15], Alzheimer’s disease [15], autism and multiple sclerosis [10], amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [16], anencephaly (child born with a missing cerebral cortex) [17], and Mesoamerican Nephropathy, the life-threatening kidney disease that is now rampant among sugar cane workers in Nicaragua and El Salvador [18]. In each case, specific proteins whose defective function is linked to the disease are shown to have strong glycine dependencies that would lead to dysfunction if glyphosate substitutes for these critical glycine residues.
Glyphosate is not unique in its property as an analogue of a coding amino acid. Actually, there are several naturally produced amino acids that are insidiously cumulatively toxic like glyphosate, that work their destruction through substitution by mistake in place of a specific coding amino acid. You can read more about these other toxins in several of the papers mentioned above and the references therein. They cause debilitating diseases like ALS and multiple sclerosis. In fact, glufosinate is a natural non-coding amino acid analogue of glutamate [19], and it is used as an herbicide that is gaining popularity now that so many weeds are becoming resistant to glyphosate. As the use of glufosinate accelerates, we can expect to see a growing incidence of a new list of currently unidentified diseases and conditions that will be due to disruption of critical highly conserved glutamate residues in various proteins.
It is a straightforward process to search the research literature looking for highly conserved regions of specific proteins where glycines are absolutely required for proper protein function, similar to the situation with myosin as described above. Again and again, you find that displacement of these glycine residues with glyphosate, a bulkier and negatively charged molecule, can explain the pathology of a specific disease or condition that is currently on the rise.
Most people are inclined to believe that this can’t possibly be true, since glyphosate has been on the market for such a long time and we are repeatedly assured by governmental regulators that it is perfectly safe for human consumption. The highly significant correlations between the rise in glyphosate usage on core crops and the rise in a long list of debilitating neurological and autoimmune disorders [20] are often dismissed with the convenient adage, “correlation does not necessarily mean causation.” Yet there is no other chemical being used in agriculture today that comes anywhere close to matching as well as glyphosate does. The fact is that all these diseases are alarmingly on the rise, and, I would rather ask the question, “If not glyphosate, what?”

Hence the verdict. Cases like these are more about the emotion than hard evidence-based outcomes. Add the bias of some jurors about some corporations and that’s what you get.

Say what you want. The expert quoted a statement from Health Canada released in 1991. I went to buy some Round-up this spring to kill grass and weeds at the end of my allotment and behold, it was under lock and key. At every hardware store and garden centre, it is kept locked up. This is not the case for other potential killers like Killex, Diazanon, etc.and other chemicals that are harmful to bees and butterflies that pollinate our crops. I am getting all kinds of pumpkins but they are not being pollinated, turning yellow and falling off. I could do it by hand, but am not there when the flowers on the females open as I only visit every two days.

No compensation has been paid to Vietnamese civilians and though some compensation was paid to U.S. veterans, according to William Sanjour, who led the Toxic Waste division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “thousands of veterans were disallowed benefits” because “Monsanto studies showed that dioxin [as found in Agent Orange] was not a human carcinogen.” An EPA colleague discovered that Monsanto had apparently falsified the data in their studies. Produced deadly PCBs for over 50 years
Monsanto produced PCBs for over 50 years and they are now virtually omnipresent in the blood and tissues of humans and wildlife around the globe. These days PCBs are banned from production and some experts say there should be no acceptable level of PCBs allowed in the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “PCB has been demonstrated to cause cancer, as well as a variety of other adverse health effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system and endocrine system.” But the evidence of widespread contamination from PCBs and related chemicals has been accumulating from 1965 onwards and internal company papers show that Monsanto knew about the PCB dangers from early on. For instance, toxicity tests on the effects of two PCBs in 1953 showed that more than 50% of the rats subjected to them died, and all of them showed damage.
With experts at the company in no doubt that Monsanto’s PCBs were responsible for contamination, in 1968 the company set up a committee to assess its options. In a paper distributed to only 12 people but which surfaced at the trial in 2002, Monsanto admitted “that the evidence proving the persistence of these compounds and their universal presence as residues in the environment is beyond question … the public and legal pressures to eliminate them to prevent global contamination are inevitable”. Monsanto papers seen by The Guardian newspaper reveal near panic. “The subject is snowballing. Where do we go from here? The alternatives: go out of business sell the hell out of them as long as we can and do nothing else try to stay in business have alternative products”, wrote the recipient of one paper. In 1969 the company wrote a confidential Pollution Abatement Plan which admitted that “the problem involves the entire United States, Canada and sections of Europe, especially the UK and Sweden”.
The problem was particularly severe in the town of Anniston in Alabama where discharges from the local Monsanto plant meant residents developed PCB levels hundreds or thousands of times the average. As The Washington Post reported, “for nearly 40 years, while producing the now-banned industrial coolants known as PCBs at a local factory, Monsanto Co. routinely discharged toxic waste into a west Anniston creek and dumped millions of pounds of PCBs into oozing open-pit landfills. And thousands of pages of Monsanto documents – many emblazoned with warnings such as ‘CONFIDENTIAL: Read and Destroy’ – show that for decades, the corporate giant concealed what it did and what it knew.” (emphasis added /GM)

US Court Documents Show Monsanto Manager Led Cancer Cover Up for Glyphosate and PCBs
The same Monsanto manager, Dr. George Levinskas, who helped hide the carcinogenic potential of PCBs in the 1970s, has now been shown, in California court documents released Tuesday, to have also influenced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the carcinogenic potential of the World’s most used herbicide – glyphosate – in the 1980s.

Dr. George Levinskas, who joined Monsanto in 1971 and became Director of Environmental Assessment and Toxicology, was a lead player in the cover up of the carcinogenic potential of the now banned PCBs in the 1970s.
Monsanto began commissioning animal toxicity studies on PCBs in the early 70s; the results did not look good. “Our interpretation is that the PCBs are exhibiting a greater degree of toxicity in this study than we had anticipated,” an executive wrote.
In 1975 a lab submitted its findings from a study using rats. An early draft said that in some cases, PCBs had caused tumors. Dr. Levinskas wrote to the lab’s director: “May we request that the report be amended to say ‘does not appear to be carcinogenic’.” The final report dropped all references to tumors.

Part of the reason the rate of cancer is rising is because the life expectancy has risen. We are more likely to get cancer as we get older. When virtually everybody died before the age of 60 very few people died from cancer, they died from infectious diseases, hunger etc. My own grandmother died of cancer at 90, and very likely I will too if i live to be 90. However if I die this month it won’t be from cancer.

But should it be investigated further to either definitively prove or disprove the hypothesis, or should it just be ignored and disregarded as bearing any relevance at all to any investigation seeking to explain the skyrocketing rates of autism in young people which (co-incidentally or not) seems to have risen in tandem with the increased use of glyphosate based herbicides and more specifically Roundup.

I think, in regards to lock and key, this varies by store. Round-Up and other glyphosate at the Barbados Lumber Company in Speightstown are not under lock and key. The same for Sevin which is banned in some other countries. Things such as NewMectin and Phyton (which are marketed as organic and safe) were under lock and key – maybe due to the small bottle size and the cost. I would not read too much into this.
I agree that this verdict should be overturned. I have not seen much if any legitimate criticism about about the many studies supporting the safety of glyphosate, such as problems with the methodologies etc. Instead, people against glyphosate usually cherry pick selected studies/websites that show that it is harmful (often out of context such as with concentrations you would never be realistically exposed to). Studies have even been retracted due to questionable science/weak evidence. You should not write off the research out there showing little to no harm without showing in some way the scientific work has been biased, the data are incorrect and/or faulty logic and procedures are used. If this can be done I am sure the consensus on glyphosate would change.
Zack Bush is questionable as he is trying to market his product “Restore” as an antidote for glyphosate and other things such as leaky gut syndrome. He claims to have research into the damage done by glyphosate and that his product works against this but I have not seen a single proper paper published with this information.
The one proper research paper I found with him as a author deals with gluten not glyphosate (https://www.omicsonline.org/open-access/protection-against-glutenmediated-tight-junction-injury-with-a-novellignite-extract-supplement-2155-9600-1000547.php?aid=78597). He has an website with “peer reviewed journal articles” but none of these are proper research papers. The one paper there closest to one (but does not even have a proper methods/procedures section etc) is about his restore product and he tested glyphosate at 10 mg/ml which is very unrealistic.

The environmental assessment concluded that spray buffer zones are necessary to mitigate potential risks to non-target species (for example, vegetation near treated areas, aquatic invertebrates and fish) from spray drift.
When used according to revised label directions, glyphosate products are not expected to pose risks of concern to the environment.
All registered glyphosate uses have value for weed control in agriculture and non-agricultural land management.
There is no regulatory measures requiring Round-up to be under lock and key that I have found for Canada.

You would have to look at the full document to see the whole basis for their conclusions, the online page is a summary. They mention that the assessment was carried out based on available information provided by the manufacturer of the pesticide, as well as a large volume of published scientific literature, monitoring information (for example, ground water and surface water) and reviews conducted by other regulatory authorities.

I think you might have missed the point Dr. Huber was making in the video above. He was saying that when GMOs were first being developed that was the belief – one gene, one function. And it was based on this belief (which we now know 25 years later was erroneous) that GMOs were unleashed on the public with little or no regulatory oversight or testing required by the FDA, EPA etc

Because implicit in Dr Huber’s original statement is the acknowledgement of the very point you were making in your comment about sane, sober scientist today no longer believing in one gene, one function.
Maybe I was wrong, but it seemed to me from the way I read your comment that your comment was a note of protest against Dr. Huber’s statement to say in effect: “No Dr Huber, of course sane, serious scientists today know that it is no longer one gene, one function.”
To me, the response seemed as if you might have thought Dr. Huber was saying that some sane, sober scientist today still do believe in one gene, one function. Whereas Dr. Huber was of course trying to make the point that since scientific understanding on genetics has moved on from the times when gm plants were first being introduced (and of course today sane, sober, modern scientists know that the old one gene, one trait belief is a fallacy), so he is in effect asking rhetorically, if this is the case, why therefore do industry and regulators still continue the business as usual, slack-assed approach to GM (e.g. lack of rigorous, long term testing to find out and take action on the types of problems he touched on in his speech) developed in the old-time days when we now know our understanding of genetics was relatively primitive compared to what we know today.
Note that I am sure 20 years from now, understanding of genetics will have changed again, so that is why I believe it is important to take the precautionary approach and not release stuff into nature that we don’t properly understand (and don’t understand that we don’t understand) which can come back to severely bite us on the ass some years further down the road when it might prove difficult, if not impossible to recall.
When billions of dollars in sales and profits and millions of dollars in executive bonuses are at stake, to those with a realistic understanding of human nature it is no real surprise that fake science is allowed to take over from real science.

Industry writes its own rules for assessing pesticides, GMOs
Eleven out of 12 EU pesticide and GMO risk assessment methods studied were developed or promoted by industry, a new report from Pesticide Action Network[1] (PAN) shows. The report says that harmful effects observed in animal safety studies on pesticides can be swept under the carpet by using these methods. For example, tumours seen in test animals can be classified as irrelevant for humans; harmful pesticide residues in groundwater or 50% of non-target insects being killed off by pesticide spraying are deemed acceptable; safe levels can be assumed for carcinogens; standards for protection of aquatic life can be relaxed; and a GM crop that unexpectedly differs markedly in composition from the non-GM parent can be waved through the approvals process with little challenge.
These methods are designed to prevent a ban on harmful and risky substances and result in weakening the protection of the public and the environment.
The new report shows that industry, often via the industry lobby group, the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), not only designed the methods but also, in 75% of the cases studied, managed to infiltrate its experts into regulatory panels such as those of EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to get these methods adopted. The WHO, EU Commission and EFSA failed to stop the infiltration of industry and maintained an ineffective conflict of interest policy. Not coincidentally, regulators also failed to keep their distance from industry. In 50% of the cases studied, regulators and EFSA had exclusive meetings with industry on the methods, excluding other stakeholders.

Pesticide Action Network stated in a press release that it urges WHO, Commission and EFSA to subject all current risk assessment methodologies to a review by independent scientists with a good scientific track record. It adds that an advanced conflict of interest policy is also urgently needed for regulatory panels.
PAN commented on its findings, “The study shows that the public and the environment do not get the protection they are entitled to. The science behind the methods is biased and manipulated and the decisions on pesticides unscientific. EFSA and WHO still have cosy relations with industry and an attitude that prevents them from being objective and independent.

Theirry Vrain is a retired scientist who at one time worked for Agriculture Canada to promote GM crops to Canada’s farmers. After retirement from his government job as a GMO promoting scientist, he became concerned that the problems with glysophate based herbicides used on most GMO crops had been vastly under-estimated, and he came to regret his previous role as an official promoter of GMOs. Have you been asking questions about the corruption in medical research which appears to take the same lines as the corruption in the biotech and agro-chemical research industry (i.e. money talks, integrity walks) that allowed poisonous, carcinogenic filth like glyphosate to be sprayed with abandon over the crops and fields off a significant part of the world’s prime farmlands for 22 years while making billions in profits for one of the worlds most anti-human, corrupt corporations in history?

Dr. Ramon Seidler, a retired senior scientist from the US Environmental Protection Agency, has become a leading spokesperson against genetically modified foods and the increasing use of pesticides with GM crops. He actively supported Oregon’s GMO labeling initiative, Measure 92, which was narrowly defeated last fall.
Dr. Seidler’s criticism of GMOs is noteworthy because during his career at the EPA he studied the impacts of genetically modified organisms on the environment. He and his fellow researchers developed methods to evaluate and predict the survival, multiplication, gene exchange, effects, and dispersal of GMOs. He published papers on these topics.
Prior to his work at the EPA, Dr. Seidler was a professor of microbiology at Oregon State University for 16 years.
Dr. Seidler was elected as Fellow in the American Academy for Microbiology. He was listed by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England as one of the 2,000 Outstanding World Scientists of the 20th Century. What are some of the problems you see with genetically engineered crops?
Dr. Seidler: From the risk assessment, economic, and legal perspectives there are many issues. There is a mixture of unfilled promises, concerns over litigation resulting from cross pollination and seed comingling events, and a disappointment that crop management practices have had significant negative impacts upon environmental biosafety. All of these side effects are happening despite no yield or production advantages of GE crops over traditional crops. There are also major concerns over whether the increased use of pesticides on our food crops have impacts upon the human population.
Over 90 percent of Americans wish we had labels on our foods to indicate when GE products are present. One-third of the world has this choice because their foods are labeled, but Americans are denied that option.
Very little sound research has been conducted by independent scientists in American universities. This is because industry essentially restricted such research by requiring professors sign an agreement prior to the research that any published information first be sent to the biotechnology seed industry for review. This de facto censorship discourages scientists and their students from becoming involved in conducting years of research that may never reach the scientific peer reviewed literature.
So what does he think is the way to go to resolve our food production issues? Hint, it does not involve spewing out more and more improperly tested, poisonous chemicals of increasing potency and doubtful safety across the landscape to enhance the bottom lines of mega-corporations with questionable safety records.
What would be your recommendations for creating a healthy sustainable food system?
Dr. Seidler: It is understood widely that a petroleum and chemical-based, corporate agriculture involving GE crops is not a solution for promoting soil health and carbon sequestration to reverse global warming and for promoting sustainable food production. Developing new and applying proven methods that maintain soil sustainability and sequester carbon into soil to reverse global warming will require concerted efforts by world scientists.
However, we already have an excellent store of information and practice that allows us to immediately restore billions of degraded acres worldwide without relying on “cheap,” and destructive petrochemical-based solutions. The methods currently available today are referred to as agroecology, restoration ecology, and organic farming.

To illustrate what I am talking about. chlorine is used in potable water at 200ppm(parts per million) and there is NOEL. If however chlorine is used at 1000ppm it is carcinogenic.

I know of an employee who was employed at one of these fast food businesses n the section which deals with the washing of the raw chickens in chlorine,and who had lost her vocal cords for almost two years.
When Roundup was very popular with farmers in Barbados, along with the other dangerous herbicides and pesticides, on popular hardware in Barbados used the shelves in its outlets to store large quantities of these chemicals, and as a customer as you enter the store, you were hit with the very strong smell of these various chemicals.

Alarming Levels of Glyphosate Contamination Found in Popular American Foods

Glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide linked to Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genetically engineered crops, has been found at alarming levels in a wide range of best-selling foods across the U.S., Food Democracy Now! and The Detox Project announced Monday.
The results published in this report are from the first independent glyphosate residue testing of popular American food products performed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the regulatory recognized “gold standard” testing methods at an FDA registered laboratory.
These newest findings also come as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) postponed hearings last month, which were due to explore glyphosate’s link to cancer in humans. Last year, 17 leading global cancer experts from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) sparked a firestorm when they classified glyphosate as a class 2A “probable human carcinogen”.
On the heels of the growing controversy surrounding glyphosate’s safety, this unique testing project that started in 2015, has so far found alarming levels of glyphosate in General Mills’ Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran and Frosted Flakes and PepsiCo’s Doritos Cool Ranch, Ritz Crackers and Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips, as well as many more famous products at levels that present significant risks according to the latest independent peer-reviewed science on glyphosate.

How much do you suppose is in the Barbados water supply? Would be interesting to find out, considering the way it has been routinely used for the longest time by some of my own neigbours as a weed killer on their properties, I imagine it would have similar widespread use in many other Bajan households. And of course this would be independent of how much might have been used in agricultural production. Bear in mind too, that Monsanto’s lies to a naive public at large that Roundup easily and quickly biodegrades after application and is therefore harmless to humans has been proven to be a blatent lie (but no doubt an effective marketing ploy).
Dr Young: Roundup Herbicide Is Endocrine Disruptor in Human Cells at Drinking Water Levels
Roundup is an endocrine disruptor and is toxic to human cells in vitro (tested in culture dishes in the laboratory) at levels permitted in drinking water in Australia, a new study has found.
This is the first study to examine the effects of glyphosate and Roundup on progesterone production by human female cells in an in vitro system that models key aspects of reproduction in women.
Glyphosate alone was less toxic to human cells than glyphosate in a Roundup formulation; both glyphosate and Roundup caused cell death which resulted in decreased progesterone levels – a form of hormone/endocrine disruption. Endocrine disruption did not precede the toxicity to cells but occurred after it. The decreases in progesterone concentrations were caused by reduced numbers of viable cells.
A 24h exposure to a concentration of glyphosate (in Roundup) similar to that recommended as an acceptable level for Australian drinking water caused significant cytotoxicity in vitro, which supports a call for long-term in vivo (in live animals) studies to characterise the toxicity of Roundup.
The possibility that Roundup has endocrine disrupting activity independent of its ability to kill or disable cells needs further study.

Imagine if a country should try to stand up against a corporate giant like Monsanto/Bayer and institute a ban on importation of an agro-chemical like Roundup because of what is claimed to be negative environmental and human health impacts. When you hear the shout, the US would be issuing all sorts of warnings and threats about how this is restraint of trade, a concocted excuse to deny Monsanto legitimate sales; the US will impose their own trade sanctions against the offending country, take it before the WTO for breaching trade agreements etc. etc. And the trump card (no pun intended) would be that they will wave in our faces is that we must know the product has been proven to be safe beyond doubt by the USA’s own regulatary body, the EPA, which has concluded after rigourous investigation that the product is safe when used as advised by the manufacturer.
Who could doubt the possibility that the EPA was not guided only by the most strict and impartial scientific research when studying whether a chemical concoction like Roundup or any of hundreds of other chemical products should be allowed on the market.

Many on the left are convinced that President Trump couldn’t care less about the environment because he’s spoken about restructuring and even scrapping certain elements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But evidence suggests that the EPA doesn’t really care about the environment, either, and that it actively suppresses relevant scientific information that threatens the status quo.
Jonathan Latham, co-founder and executive director of the Bioscience Resource Project and editor of the Independent Science News website, is a well-known critic of corporate fascism and its influence on American politics, including at the EPA. He was recently interviewed by Truthout.org‘s Lorna Garano, during which he explained how science is routinely manipulated by corporate interests to push an agenda.
At the EPA, this includes covering up pertinent data about chemical safety that benefits chemical corporations at the expense of public health. And the situation is so dire that Latham is actually writing a book about what he’s uncovered that focuses on where the problem lies, while offering suggestions on how to correct them.
Latham is also working on a project known as Poison Papers, which represents a treasure trove of about two-and-a-half tons of now-uncovered regulatory and chemical industry documents, exposing the EPA as little more than a shell regulatory body that’s become completely beholden to chemical industry interests.

Roundup is an endocrine disruptor and is toxic to human cells in vitro (tested in culture dishes in the laboratory) at levels permitted in drinking water in Australia, a new study has found.
This is the first study to examine the effects of glyphosate and Roundup on progesterone production by human female cells in an in vitro system that models key aspects of reproduction in women.
Glyphosate alone was less toxic to human cells than glyphosate in a Roundup formulation; both glyphosate and Roundup caused cell death which resulted in decreased progesterone levels – a form of hormone/endocrine disruption. Endocrine disruption did not precede the toxicity to cells but occurred after it. The decreases in progesterone concentrations were caused by reduced numbers of viable cells.

David, yesterday I visited a hardware store in Christ Church and Roundup is displayed in large quantities on open shelves , no lock and key here. Roundup is under lock and key at other establishments for the same reason that Brandy and other big mout drinks are similarly stored ,they are expensive,attractive and come mainly in handy containers that could easily be secreted.
Over the last couple of months we have seen many product- recalls, and advisories. Romaine lettuce,one of these recalls is still on the shelves,so is Johnson’s Baby powder.
Most hardware stores in Barbados still stock items, mainly from the United States ,which carry warnings that they are carcinogenic in nature and banned in some states in the USA. Some copper pipe fittings ,now banned for uses with potable water, are still readily available in Barbados.
I do hope the the authorities will not treat these recent concerns in the same manner in which they have treated the Corn Beef crisis a year ago,where they caved in after the local agency cried that they were loosing precious dollars.

How non-scientist U.S. President George H. W. Bush made GMOs safe by executive order.
At least some of the USA Food and Drug Administration’s own scientists had been proclaiming a need for extensive testing of GMO crops before unleashing them on US consumers. However, after President Bush declared by executive order that GMO crops were substantially equivelant to non-GMO crops then, it was deemed by FDA rules that there was no need for any special testing and the crops could be released and put on the market. That substantial equivalent ruling also enable the USA to arm twist European countries into allowing in GMOs without the testing they thought was necessary. See below:

The case first came before the World Trade Organization in a filing made by the Bush Administration in May 2003, just as the military occupation of Iraq was entering a new phase. The US President held a rare press conference to tell the world that the US was formally charging the EU, accusing the EU ‘moratorium’ on GMO approval of being a cause of starvation in Africa. Their twisted logic argued that so long as a major industrialized region such as the EU resisted planting GMO crops domestically, it caused sceptical African governments to harden their resistance to US food aid in the form of GMO crops. That, Bush charged, was causing unnecessary ‘starvation’ in Africa because some countries refused USDA food aid in form of GMO crop surpluses.
The issue of breaking resistance barriers in the European Union to the proliferation of GMO crops has been a matter of the highest strategic priority for those controlling policy in Washington since 1992 when then-President George H.W. Bush, the father of the current President, issued an Executive Order proclaiming GMO plants such as soybeans or GMO corn to be ‘substantially equivalent’ to ordinary corn or soybeans, and, therefore, not needing any special health safety study or testing.
That ‘substantial equivalence’ ruling by President Bush in 1992 opened the floodgates to the unregulated spread of GMO across the American agriculture landscape. As basis for its 2003 WTO filing against the EU, Washington, on behalf of agribusiness interests including Monsanto, Dow, DuPont and others, charged the EU with violation of the American ‘substantial equivalence’ doctrine!

Further, there is no rule that the judges of WTO respect any national laws of any country. The three judges meet in secret without revealing the time or location. All court documents are confidential and are not published unless one party releases it. It is a modern version of the Spanish Inquisition, but with far more power.
The EU banned the import of US beef treated with growth and other hormones, and the US lodged a formal WTO complaint. There was a long report from independent scientists showing that the hormones added to US beef were ‘cancer-causing’. The WTO three judge panel ruled that the EU did not present a ‘valid’ scientific case to refuse import, and the EU was forced to pay $150 million annually for lost US profits. (4).
The powerful private interests who control WTO agriculture policy prefer to remain in the background as little-publicized NGO’s. One of the most influential in creating the WTO is a little-publicized organization called the IPC– the International Food and Agricultural Trade Policy Council, shortened to International Policy Council.
The IPC was created in 1987 to lobby for the GATT agriculture rules of WTO at the Uruguay GATT talks. The IPC demanded removal of ‘high tariff’ barriers in developing countries, remaining silent on the massive government subsidy to agribusiness in the USA.
A look at the IPC membership explains what interests it represents. The IPC Chairman is Robert Thompson, former Assistant Secretary US Department of Agriculture and former Presidential economic adviser. Also included in the IPC are Bernard Auxenfans, Chief Operating Officer, Monsanto Global Agricultural Company and Past Chairman of Monsanto Europe S.A.; Allen Andreas of ADM/Toepfer; Andrew Burke of Bunge (US); Dale Hathaway former USDA official and head IFPRI (US).

Monsanto and the FDA: Two crime families working a trillion-dollar hustle
When you cut through the verbiage that surrounded the introduction of GMO food into America, you arrive at two key statements. One from Monsanto and one from the FDA, the agency responsible for overseeing, licensing, and certifying new food varieties as safe.
Quoted in the New York Times Magazine (October 25, 1998, “Playing God in the Garden”), Philip Angell, Monsanto’s director of corporate communications, famously stated: “Monsanto shouldn’t have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.”
From the Federal Register, Volume 57, No.104, “Statement of [FDA] Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties,” here is what the FDA had to say on this matter: “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety.”
The direct and irreconcilable clash of these two statements is no accident. It’s not a sign of incompetence or sloppy work or a mistake or a miscommunication. It’s a clear signal that the fix was in.
Passing the buck back and forth was the chilling and arrogant strategy through which Pandora’s box was pried opened and GMO food was let into the US food supply.
In order for this titanic scam to work, the media had to cooperate. Reporters had to be a) idiots and b)sell-outs.
With few exceptions, reporters and their editors let the story rest there, as a “he said-he said” issue. No sane principled journalist would have cut bait at that point, but who said mainstream reporters are sane or principled?
Underneath the Monsanto-FDA buck-passing act, there was a conscious deal to give a free pass to GMO crops. This had nothing to do with science or health or “feeding the world.” It was about profits. It was also about establishing a new monopoly on food.
