“In short, his wits being quite gone, he hit upon the strangest notion that every madman in this world hit upon, and that was that he fancied it was right and requisite, as well for the support of his own honour as for the service of his country, that he should make a knight-errant of himself, roaming the world over in full armour and on horseback in quest of adventures, and putting in practice himself all that he had read of as being the usual practices of knights-errant; righting every kind of wrong, and exposing himself to peril and danger from which, in the issue, he was to reap eternal renown and fame. Already the poor man saw himself crowned by the might of his arm Emperor of Trebizond at least; and so, led away by the intense enjoyment he found in these pleasant fancies, he set himself forthwith to put his scheme into execution…” –Don QuixoteMiguel de Cervantes

As many others, including apparently the majority of the voters in the United States, I do not care much for the politics of the current president of the United States, Mr Donald Trump. Having myself survived exposure to the nightmare scenario of his Electoral College triumph last November, nothing he has done since persuades me that he is not the narcissistic, temperamental misogynist that he projected himself to be during the campaign to citizens of the United States who, albeit, by fortuitous electoral distribution and for their various personal reasons, did not care enough about these flaws and so elected him to the high office of POTUS, as it is so charmingly referred to.

Most of my readers will be familiar with the epithet “quixotic”. It describes, according to one source, behaviour that is foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals and marked by rash, lofty, romantic ideas. The word derives from the character created in 1605 by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in his novel, “The History of the valorous and wittie (sic) Knight Errant Don Quixote of La Mancha”, to give its full title. There has been a number of musical and film adaptations since, including the 1992 “Man of La Mancha”, featuring the popular hit, “To dream the impossible dream”.

Constraints of space do not permit a fuller discussion today of the adventures of the title character, but the epigraph above offers some information as to the anatomy of his pursuits.

The connection that I seek to make between Don Quixote and Mr Trump lies in the erratic, nay, quixotic nature of the behaviour of each of these individuals. For instance, perhaps the best known escapade of Don Quixote is tilting at windmills, an expression that has found its way into the lexicon as a metaphor for inutility and one that is ideally likened to Mr Trump’s attempts to exclude Mexicans and some Muslims so that America will be “great” again, whatever that coded expression might mean.

“At this point they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that there are on a plain, and as soon as Don Quixote saw them he said to his squire, “Fortune is arranging matters for us better than we could have shaped our desires ourselves, for look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our fortunes; for this is righteous warfare, and it is God’s good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth.”

“What giants?” said Sancho Panza.

“Those thou seest there,” answered his master, “with the long arms, and some have them nearly two leagues long.”

“Look, your worship,” said Sancho; “what we see there are not giants but windmills, and what seem to be their arms are the sails that turned by the wind make the millstone go.”

“It is easy to see,” replied Don Quixote, “that thou art not used to this business of adventures; those are giants; and if thou art afraid, away with thee out of this and betake thyself to prayer while I engage them in fierce and unequal combat.”

The analogy is satisfied even further whether we consider Sancho Panza to be Mr Mike Pence, the Vice-President, Ms Kellyanne Conway with her “alternative facts”, or Mr Steve Bannon with his antediluvian views on difference and press freedom; and Mr Trump’s choice weapons of war not to be the lance and shield but his penchant for executive orders and late-night-to-early-morning tweets.

None of this is to ignore the fact that for some unarticulated reasons perhaps best known to them, there are those who support Mr Trump. I will not hazard a guess as to their reasons, although I am prepared to concede that they are certainly entitled to their opinions.

Nonetheless, his obsession with being perceived as the smartest and the most popular incumbent ever, as well as his seemingly facile ignorance of the basic principles of US constitutionalism that he swore to uphold less than a month ago, together with his propensity to speak in superlatives all mark him out as nothing less than…quixotic.

Indeed, Mr Trump’s relationship with matters legal so far has been less than auspicious. First, he chose to dismiss, as was his prerogative, the substantive Attorney General for demurring to a patently discriminatory embargo on certain individuals, even as his proposed replacement awaits Senate confirmation, thus leaving a gap in the governance architecture that would be constitutionally repugnant in most other jurisdictions. Second, he nominates a predictable replacement for Justice Scalia on the Supreme Court; one who, unsurprisingly, comes mouthing the same tired conservative claptrap about the Constitution having a settled meaning, as if time has stood still since the time of Jefferson and the others in the 18th century.

This jurisprudential perception is indeed instructive in the current context, for the original Constitutional text in the US regarded certain individuals, definable by a common characteristic, as being less than whole human beings. Too besides, it is at least passing strange that this so–called “right” meaning seems always to accord with conservative points of view, while those opinions that endorse such progressive values as the autonomy of women and others to guard their privacy are considered matters of regrettable and unconstitutional judicial activism.

The following piece is apposite:

Almost immediately after, Don Quixote runs into some merchants whom he challenges to admit that his lady, Dulcinea, is the most beautiful damsel in the world. Not sure where the situation is leading, they address him as “Sir Knight” but anger him by some facetious comments regarding Dulcinea’s beauty. On hearing these remarks, Don Quixote charges but unfortunately Rocinante slips and our knight ends up beaten by a muleteer. What might be construed as a setback for Don Quixote is easily explained: it was Rocinante’s fault.  But equally important (to him) is the fact that the merchants addressed Don Quixote in chivalric terms.

  10. Frankly this is all monarchical Trump, all the way. Trump sees himself as beyond reproach and infallible…the aura of a King.

The Republican congress will go along with this king because they want to release their eight years pent up legislative tension.

However, these are the SAME people who railed against the monarchical Obama and even as they foist their king in order to achieve their ends, they also will not destroy their republic.

So, let this king live as long as his whimsical narrative carries the day.

Surely there will be some scheming palace intrigue that will send this pretender home to the tower and likely it will be a ‘so called Judge’ who adjudicates those last days of King Donald.

  11. Next up, a to be confirmed labour secretary who employed an undocumented worker? Was it that he did not pay taxes for the person? Who cares!

  12. @David February 7, 2017 at 6:48 PM….LOLLL…. re ” …who employed an undocumented worker? Was it that he did not pay taxes for the person? Who cares!”

    You are being facetious right!

Isn’t Trump’s entire mantra about the US being for Americans and all illegals are persona non grata?

Did he not promise to drain the swamp of the Washington insider shenanigan games played?

This falls squarely in that game theory arena: one set of rules for the big boys and another set for the little people.

But if anyone can pull this off it surely is the indefatigable Trump.

These folk always say they did not know the person was illegal but it’s amusing that invariably the employer is a very savvy professional but yet submitted no paper work whatever re the employee’s employment status at the time and assumed amazingly they did not have to pay social security or any other taxes re that person’s employment.

And now in this case he is going to take over a cabinet post….at the labor dept. no less.

Of course other previous cabinet appointees bit the dust for the same thing…and too others didn’t.

So who cares indeed. All one pre-determined rigmarole anyhow. LOLL.

  13. Some are equating Trumpism to monarchical rule.

We are not there yet. It is too large a leap.

Even before Trumpism other systems, when compared, were difficult to distinguish in real terms.

Trump himself maybe merely trying for the neo-liberal 2 agenda, which Obama failed at. It certainly seems that way, though too early to state definitively.

Trumpism maybe a fleeting deviation, yet

More unlikely that an alternative even develops as a system in and of itself

We are unsure whether Bannon and the other functional idiots around Trump have the brain to conjure a systemic break.

If not, we certainly have the end of the world.

  19. What happened on the floor of the US Senate last night speaks to deeper or ingrained ‘Trumpism’ tendencies. Some would say default settings of the American system/s.

This transcends one man. Call it what you like. There is a much bigger problem here. These are the problems which made it possible for the emergence of Trump in the first place.

    There are millions like him.

So instead of maligning one man alone, it’s the system/s stupid!

This is where our fodder must be properly directed.

  21. Why would supposedly intelligent people fixate on one person and try to destroy him?

I think the answer may be that the system needs changing and he has it in him to change it!!

I think the reason why Trump attracts such hatred is because he will change the system … for better or worse.

It would appear as if the logical reason people so hate the man is because they have a vested interest in keeping the existing system.

… even although they are able to figure out the system needs changing.

I listened to the deliberations of the Court and can’t tell which way it will decide … suspect it will figure out some sort of compromise but who knows.

  22. Not sure if the Pachamama is speaking at 8:44 AM to the issue on the US Senate floor which I find absolutely ridiculous but I endorse that rhetoric on this issue.

….and that issue is Senator Warren being censored and silenced in floor debate because she violated a rule which forbids a senator from impugning the character of another.

The rule is rational and makes perfect sense when senators are debating AMONG themselves on any topic as it restricts ad hominem broadsides thus avoiding petty, personal tiffs and keeps the debate focused on the subject of record.

It makes absolutely NO SENSE when the debate is ABOUT a senator who is being vetted for a position away from the senate….

Of necessity the rule should be suspended automatically in circumstances like that.

As noted above these are the type of simple but confounding problems which created the fertile ground for the emergence of the populism sweeping the country .

The average person is totally confounded with how the elite finagle and finesse their wondrous life.

In a few weeks the senate Democrats will dissect in granular detail the life and career of a Supreme Court Judge-elect. They will prosecute this man in the most aggressive way possible.

Yet to simply refer to an old letter from Coretta Scott-King who protested Sen Sessions at an earlier career moment is too harsh a prosecution…these words violate the ‘holy chamber’ : “Mr. Sessions has used the awesome powers of his office in a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters. For this reprehensible conduct, he should not be rewarded”.

Sounds like an indictment of the actions in real estate of a landlord called D.J.Trump to me!

At least in Bim’s HofA the ladies and gents can cuss each other decorously.

  33. Here is Donald J. Trump, touting “America first” and he’s going to “make America great again and back bring US jobs.” However, he “criticized Nordstrom Inc for what he said was its unfair treatment of his daughter Ivanka after its decision to not purchase her clothing line for this upcoming season.”

And if you look closely at the photos of the shirt and trousers bearing Ivanka Trump’s name, you will see they were MADE in China.

Perhaps the Chinese are BETTER “shirt makers” and tailors than Americans.

Trump should add to his list: “Do as I say and not as I do.”

The judicial branch of the Barbados Government is routinely denigrated on BU .. Tales from the Court!!!

Come to think about it the judiciary is routinely denigrated by the CCJ so what the heck!!

I think you should be able to speak your mind about any branch of Government … after all, the individuals that comprise the branch work for you!!

Trump creates thousands of jobs and understands the duties owed by employees and employers.

People don’t speak out because they are frightened and ignorant of the power they possess…. again, Trump is just showing what is possible.

… and it is because he understands the concepts of responsibility and accountability….. most of us are just dumb or frightened.

Perhaps he is over doing it but he needs to show the millions who believe the ban is necessary that he will ” march into hell” on their account if it is necessary …..

… remember, he works for those millions and the others and just as the judicial branch is responsible to its employers, so too is the executive branch … and particularly Donald J. Trump.

But he understands that because it is bred into him and he has lived it all his life.

All he is saying to the Court is ….. just do it …. you are holding me up in delivering what millions sent me here to do and to whom I am responsible and accountable!!

Can you imagine if we had a judiciary and executive who understood these finer concepts!!

John….Barbados does not have a judicial branch of government, you are delusional, there is clearly a nonfunctional executive branch, an administrative branch made up of public servants, civil servants whatever you call them…..and a nonfunctional judiciary, government controlled but never updated from the 1600s to meet modern standards…..and the CCJ is well aware of this…hence the constant criticism

In contrast, the judical branch IS the 3rd arm of government in the US and unless the illiterate one is willing to suspend the present one and change the constitution to suit his mentally challenged state, he should not be criticizing it or cursing the judges….he should accept it.

As a matter of fact, if a country’s constitution does not benefit the majority, in this case Barbados’….and it does not….there is no functioning constitution on the island …..the people have to hold the foolish leaders they have been cursed with in the last 50 years accountable for this dliberate oversight. .

    http://ow.ly/LEyX308PN9Q

John you are talking pure rubbish….just like the illiterate one, you are cluesless to the function of the judicial branch of government, the constitution and reality…no use even trying to explain it to the simple minded. …..there will be no understanding, not even the consequences to the same judges if they were as uneducated….why do you think former AG Yates pulled back.

    http://ow.ly/hFjd308PP0E

John…speak for thyself…if most bajans bajans…read the majority blacks were to utilize ancestry.com…they would be able to trace their ancestry back thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years….life did not begin for black bajans in the 1600s or 1800s……although most are foolish enough to believe so and believe your nonsense, maybe that is when it began for you miniorites…limited knowledge is a curse.

Learn something, black people can trace their history and origins back thousands of years through DNA.

I have been hearing this for a long time, but the minority bajan whites on the island can do with some educating, they are indeed backward to the extreme.
